Michael Bloomberg: Why Yes, I'm Banning The Sale of Soda In Any Container 16 Ounces or Larger
— Ace

What else could he do? After all, he is a parent with eight million children.

Eight million children incapable of deciding what they'll eat or drink.

So of course he must tell them what to eat and drink. With a Lesson called "The Law."

“Obesity is a nationwide problem, and all over the United States, public health officials are wringing their hands saying, ‘Oh, this is terrible,’ ” Mr. Bloomberg said in an interview on Wednesday in City Hall’s sprawling Governor’s Room.

“New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something,” he said. “I think that’s what the public wants the mayor to do.”

The New York Times thinks It's About Time (TM).

The measures have led to occasional derision of the mayor as Nanny Bloomberg, by those who view the restrictions as infringements on personal freedom. But many of the measures adopted in New York have become models for other cities, including restrictions on smoking and trans fats, as well as the use of graphic advertising to combat smoking and soda consumption, and the demand that chain restaurants post calorie contents next to prices.

You know, we shouldn't call them "liberal" any longer. Liberal has a meaning.

They were once liberal. Now they are simply authoritarian socialists.

3 I was tellin' a self-professed ultra-liberal that this was what happens when government decides that it's payin' for your health care. He thought it was absurd.

I'm not sure I'm going to bother tellin' him, "I told you so."

But it's tempting.

How can Bloomberg unilaterally impose this restriction? Isn't there a City Council that has to vote on his meshugena proposals?

Mayor Nutter tried to enact a soda tax in Philadelphia, was opposed by storekeepers, the beverage lobby and just plain folk. It suffered a slow painful death, deservedly. What's the process in NYC, can Bloomie just wave his hand and issue mayoral proclamations?

18 I am not overweight. If it's laudable for Sandra Fluk to have the "right" to have us purchase her contraceptives (let's not even mention the health risks of indiscriminate sex), why shouldn't I be able to buy a mega size soda if I want to? Even if I were severely overweight it's no one's business. Once they start regulating slutty behavior on the parent of both sexes then they can talk to me about food. Gah. I'm so glad I don't live in NYC.

I've thought of Totalitarian and Fascist and Statist and Leftist but those are either unweildy or just not descriptive enough for the vast number of sleepwalkers out there who determine our elections.   But I do like Authoritarians. Because it is completely descriptive and I think many people can relate to the term. Especially people that had authoritarian fathers. Authoritarians make you want to rebel. Just like many kids rebel against their parents. Well these statist fuckers are just that - authoritarian control freaks just laying down the law on everyone else. Like George Will said 'Liberals don't mind what you do, as long as its compulsory', or words to that effect.   Authoritarian. I like it. I'm using it from now on.

There would a test and bureaucracy like the DMV and there would be restrictions on the license to limit other things like salt and fat.
If you weighed more than the license reports you would be issued a warning and refused anything other than water, boiled chicken and raw vegetables. Another infraction and you would be fined. Too many and you would be prosecuted and jailed.

120 "The measures have led to occasional derision of the mayor as Nanny Bloomberg, by those who view the restrictions as infringements on personal freedom. But many of the measures adopted in New York have become models for other cities, including restrictions on smoking and trans fats, as well as the use of graphic advertising to combat smoking and soda consumption, and the demand that chain restaurants post calorie contents next to prices."

The second sentence is presenting as a rejoinder to the first, but it's not. It has nothing to do with the concern raised in the first. This is the way the NYT usually pushes its narrative; not by offering substantive replies to critics of progressive social programs, but rather red-herrings intended to flatter the self-important sensibilities of their audience.

For all the huffing and puffing at Tepid Air (and, sadly, here), NYC has the restrictions that porcine shitstain of a mayor wants, and they'll go along with 'em. Same way people listen to all the self-righteous bilge Ms Dog-Eater spews, and then obey. Ditto for Bark Obama, his own self, who has proven that he gets what he wants.

Absent some major event that awakens the sleeping multitudes, the liberals are winning, and winning big. We piss and moan about their rules and regulations and, as Law-abiding Citizens, we live with their marching orders.

158 The thing about New York is that it's influence goes beyond it's borders.

Because of rent control, the rents 60 miles away are higher than they should be. Partly due to the New Yorkers fleeing the city and partly due to New York landlords buying property out of state.

They never understand that folks do react to stuff over a certain threshold.

That's why Shumer et al are so concerned about taxpayers renouncing their citizenship. BTW wasn't that where Britain was about 50 years ago? All the rich rockers renouncing their citizenship so they could keep some of their money as Britain had like a 90% tax on certain incomes?

According to Daddy Bloomberg he doesn't need City Council approval since it's just a "regulation" and not a "law".

It's much like how the EPA has a bazillion "regulations" that can result in jail time if you violate them, but weren't passed by Congress.

*****

There isn't anyone ANYONE who orders a cheeseburger and thinks it's healthy for them. And, as far as salad goes, ANYTHING with some greenery around it can be called a salad.

I once ordered a steak salad at a local diner. The menu said it came with fries, and I thought it odd, but planned to give them to my dining partner. When the salad arrived, the french fries were IN THE SALAD.

So, all a restaurant has to do is place the 32 oz glass of coke on a serving platter with some arugula arranged around it.

Problem solved.

Also, since DOMA is dead, I have to ask: since the next step is forcing states  to recognize homosexual marriages performed in other states, will the gay marriage performing states then be forced to recognize the carry permits of the states they forced into accepting their gay marriages?  It seems like opposite sides of the same coin.

Sometimes I will like two entrees, and if I notice one is 1,000 calories and the other is 1,800 that helps me decide. Its also very easy for a restaurant to go on calorie counter dot com and put in their recipe and get a per portion calorie count. I would support this less if the state had a special way of calculating it and demanded lab tests, etc. I'm sure they do.

302 Oddly, when Bloomberg pushed the salt issue, it came out that he likes a lot of salt on everything, including pizza. When the press questioned him on this seeming contradiction, the response was that this was an issue between him and his doctor. But he won't let it be an issue between you and your doctor.

Really, if they wanted to crack down on the "epidemic" of obesity, they would limit beer, wine and other liquor consumption, but Bloomy isn't going to pass anything that would impinge on his or his wealthy neighbors rights to have more than 2 glasses of wine with dinner at fancy restaurant. A 5 oz. glass of wine is around 90 calories. 2 glasses is 180 calories. More calories than the size of soda he is trying to ban. But you will never see that happen, it would infringe on his lifestyle and that is verboten.

There is a strong element of screw the franchise restaurants which serve typically those in the lower economic spectrum. That these are often the often healthiest (depending on choice of food) and cleanest places they have easy access to, one strongly suspects there is an element of paternalistic racism to this proposal as well.

312 It's so cruel.  Our forefathers were educated men.  They read Plato, More, Hobbes, Locke, and Montesquieu.  They understood the tyrannies and the methods to avoid them.  They fashioned a government to withstand the shit.

Obama, like FDR, tries to bully the judicial branch.  Congress grants legislative authority to the executive branch (e.g. EPA)

Especially with the current "leadership" in the House and Senate.

The weeping boner has back tracked on everything that got the Republicans back in control of the House. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G.

First Obama then the House then the Senate.

Phew it's going to be an uphill slog but it can be done. It MUST be done. The only choice is to capitulate.

344 Our current Cold Civil War is in the main based on creeping totalitarianism under the guise of socialism, the fairness strawman and the concept that Big Government knows better than you do. I wrote a trio of posts entitled "The Roots of Our Cold Civil War" (as well as parts 2 and 3). The intro post is at http://tinyurl.com/6vqczdc. Nanny State-ism is but a stepping stone to complete totalitarianism where every aspect of our lives are decided by the Central Scrutinizer ...

345 'Really, if they wanted to crack down on the "epidemic" of obesity, they would limit beer, wine and other liquor consumption, but Bloomy isn't going to pass anything that would impinge on his or his wealthy neighbors rights ...' I disagree. Carbs are what make most people fat. Wine and beer have some carbs, but distilled spirits have none. White bread, white flour pasta, potatoes, and sugary treats (inc. soda) are the main culprits. However, I don't think the govt. should ban them. Let people make their own choices, for better or worse.

-Ace of Spades

Best take I've heard in a month. "Authoritarian Socialists" should be the label we start using broadly and widely through Twitter and other channels, as relates to mandating nanny-state laws. It's more descriptive of what they are doing, and fits more appropriately with a good reading of Bastiat's "The Law".

Put that bullet in your guns. Excellent, Ace.
