Media Snarking on Mike Pence's and Wife's Marital Rules
— Ace

The Vice President never dines alone with another woman, in order to avoid temptation or even the appearance of impropriety which could spark jealousy or mistrust in his wife. I assume his wife follows a similar rule.

This is a pretty strict rule, but a wise one; temptations will happen, jealousies will erupt, unless you're pretty careful about just never putting yourself in a situation that could cause such things.

Certainly there's nothing wrong with it -- and a lot that's right with it. The most effective way to avoid being burned by fire is to never play with fire.

But the media, which never found anything curious about the Obama's his-and-hers separate vacations, or the Clinton's his-and-hers separate sex lives, finds this all very strange, and has been snarking on it for 48 hours.

Here's one particularly diverse, inclusive, and multicultural love trumping hate tweet I got "Yes! When my husband attends alcohol parties with other women I can't stop doing Jesus whispers to make his privates explode." Hundreds of likes and retweets on that one, I had to finally mute it so it wouldn't keep showing up. That's who we're dealing with folks. These are the one who booed God and protect Sharia law. Which they kept bringing up, idiotically. Pence is following Sharia law, you see. By not going on dates with girls other than his wife.

162 I was raised with the teaching that married people do not dine alone with members of the opposite sex. The reason for that was so obvious that it didn't need spelled out. It's also employment law 101 that you are never ever alone with an employee, let alone a subordinate. If you must be alone for some reason, then you have an open door or, if the door must be closed, then you have the meeting in a room with windows where you can be seen. Again, the reasons for that are obvious. That this is somehow shocking says far more about the people who are shocked than it does the Pences. Story time! When I was working for the psychopaths, I was the Big Boss's protege. I was obviously a favored employee and I did get a few extra perks, like my own office and the better computer and a couple of extra vacation days. That's because I also had more responsibilities and put in more hours. That's how it works. However, there were people in my office who were jealous of me over that and thus could be very catty. I pretended like I didn't know what was going on but I was aware. There was a major trial and Big Boss was handling it and I ended up working with him until 10 or 11 at night for a few days. There was a nice restaurant right across the street and, as was common, Big Boss would have us head over to there for dinner and then back to the office. About a week into this, I got called into the office manager's office and she launched into a spiel about how there were deep concerns that my relationship with Big Boss was inappropriate. I demanded to know on what grounds and the reply was because he took me to dinner and it was very odd that we were working together at the office by ourselves so late. Very odd indeed and it looked bad and people in the office were talking. That's when I replied, in barely civil tones, that this was odd since, at my insistence, an expert or some other witness went to dinner with us and, again at my insistence, we never once worked alone and that if people in the office were talking they must not have been talking to the other people who were also working late. I made sure that we were never alone specifically to avoid people accusing me of sleeping my way to the top. Surely, she wasn't accusing me of that, right? Yeah, that was a fun conversation. So, yes, this whole never be alone/never eat with someone doesn't just work for men's benefit. It protects women as well.

When she proudly displayed this horror to me and asked me if I loved it, I was hard pressed to find a polite murmur. She actually said, "See, it's not dark in here anymore." No, darling, it's darker because that lovely paneling gleamed and reflected light, while that dirty looking dull matte gray absorbs it.

But seriously, while the original phrasing here is a little weird, most of it is common sense. I was taught both in the Army and in the corporate world to NEVER be alone with a female who was junior to me in rank or title behind a closed door. It's just not worth gambling your career on a false accusation (or a mistaken one), or allowing malicious third parties to start rumors that can harm you AND the other person.

194 Posted by: naturalfake at March 30, 2017 03:29 PM (NyJwR) I'm kind of torn on this one personally. On one hand, I've done plenty of one-on-one business lunches with female coworkers, employees, salespeople, etc. with zero shenanigans involved. I've always lived by the rule that if I can't trust someone completely (and visa versa), we shouldn't be together. On the other hand, the issue is more often gossip and wagging tongues from 3rd parties than it is trust or respect within a relationship. Equally at issue are the ridiculous HR liabilities. If I lived my life in the public eye, I would think a rule such as this would be a necessity due to 3rd party gossip and the the paparazzi media.

Now, it is not out of the realm of possibility that I will be having lunch/coffee with married women these days, because I have cultivated over the years several female "friendships" that never evolved into something else. I thoroughly enjoy the company, but I am quite clear about the lines with myself, and if need be, with the women. I can tell you though, back in the day, when I was "innocently" having a meal/drink with a woman, there was nothing innocent about my intent. Except to say, when I got friend zoned, I didn't mind it, because I would actually enjoy their company anyway.

It is awkward though because I read a forum about a female farm equipment sales rep and how a bunch of the wives were upset that she would go out on the tractor with the husband to talk about stuff and it was just the two of them and they were raised that you just didn't do that. She wasn't doing anything improper but there was no practical way for her to be sure there were witnesses. Sometimes the work needs to be done and you can't meet at the kitchen table. What about then? Hell, take my office. There's three of us. If me or the other co-worker is out for some reason, it's only the Boss and the other person. 260 I'll add one more thing to my thoughts on this. When I was in a relationship, I liked having dinner with my girlfriend. There was no obligation or mistrust about it. It was simply something I liked to do. There were times when I'd have business dinners but, even then, it was nice to include girlfriends/ spouses. Granted, few people enjoy being a third wheel at a business dinner and, if it was going to be a group of business associates, this might be further awkward for a spouse/ significant other. That said, I can easily see the basis of such a rule being, "I keep my work during business hours and dinner time for my SO and myself", particularly for people who have business obligations that routinely suck up 23 of 24 hours of the day.

Once, though, a very attractive female undergrad showed up dressed to the nines (dinner dress, heels, the works; most unusual for a college student) entered my office and closed the door behind her. It turned out to be totally innocuous, but I was really relieved when she left. I was single then, untenured, and working way too many hours to have a social life. I think I recall reading an interview with him many many years ago, in which he had said that he'd seen too many good men destroyed by scandal, rightfully or not.  He and Ruth tried to put in place guidelines that would help them to remain faithful and to protect his ministry from even a hint of scandal.  I believe he succeeded.  I don't ever remember hearing anything disparaging about Billy Graham.

Posted by: Only GOP girl in PDX at March 30, 2017 04:04 PM (3aBcq) That if your company has a policy that your sales people will travel together and have lunches and dinners together then I want to be hired by the firm that's going to get very very very rich indeed from the sexual harassment lawsuits that will be coming. Because they will be coming, no pun intended. Sending two employees off to travel together, particularly of opposite sexes, is a nightmare waiting to happen. Now, I do agree that business lunches carry a very different connotation than a dinner. Lunches are for a more limited time frame and, generally, are in more casual places. But dinner? That is after work and is the start of private engagements. If I were the client, I would not be best pleased to have a sales person, no matter the gender, suggest dinner. That's pushing a boundary. Golf is in public but I would not feel comfortable doing a business golf twosome, even with a client. Especially with a client. Hell, if I were a female sales rep and my boss demanded that I take a male client off on a private social outing I would feel like I was being pimped out. As I noted previously, sales is difficult because there are some lines blurred on business and social. But this notion that business lives must include social events on a one on one basis with someone else strikes me as an area absolutely ripe for abuse. And litigation. Tasty, tasty, tasty litigation. *ponders* I'm thinking a nice high five, low six figure retainer would be good.

402 Media screams (yet again) "I LIVE IN A BUBBLE!"

403 Is it not the intention of every company to treat their customers equally? Is it not discrimination against the female boss that the male employee will not travel with her (ride in a car, have lunch, dinner) I am in the transportation business and have traveled with male superiors as well as employees for 20+ years with no problem or harassment. I am not saying men haven't "tried", it's about how you handle it as a professional. I fully believe that if you have this policy in your life and you cannot treat customers equally you should not be in the position.

404 Posted by: Only GOP girl in PDX at March 30, 2017 04:04 PM (3aBcq) Scenario A: People traveling on business tend to be separate by default unless there is a concerted effort to book seats next to each other and stuff them in double bed rooms, regardless of gender of the people involved. If I'm traveling on business, the hours are usually a lot longer and I look for every excuse for time alone I can get. Scenario B: If not people are not going with Scenario A, even if everyone is the same gender, they are out fucking off together on the company dime. So, you get a bunch of drunks padding the expense account or sexual harassment suits, accidentally pregnant girls returning from training meetings, etc. Yes, there are exceptions but most companies have non fraternization polices for a reason.

407 Is it not the intention of every company to treat their customers equally? Is it not discrimination against the female boss that the male employee will not travel with her (ride in a car, have lunch, dinner) ======================== Look. The genders have been WEAPONIZED. As a man, I will not even talk to a new hire, male or female, until they have been here for at least 3 months. IF they are crazy then usually its divulged by that time. I will then proceed cautiously by saying "good morning" or things of that nature. Be aware that anyone, male or female, in authority is subject to a an awful risk by being alone with any subordinate. Especially the idiots coming out of college these days. That's what they have made of the world. Trust is dead.

409 Marital fidelity is so alien a concept to these media operatives that they think there's something sinister about it.

410 You know what, eff-them. Sticks and stones and all that. Ignore them, they'll go away. The only person whose opinion Mike Pence needs to worry about, in this context, is his wife's.

411 Well, it's not just them protecting themselves from temptation. This also makes it harder for the left to successfully accuse them of anything. Remember how they said McCain did something with someone (don't recall details) just because they were seen together?

412 I've never believed anything K Rove has said why should I believe him now? As for as "read what the liberals are saying"; what the Republicans are saying is disgusting enough why should I want to read their crap? Oh, and Rosalind had a ring in Jimmy's nose she did.

413 "278 Funny how none of these media chuckle-heads had anything to say to Ta-Nehisi Coates when he admitted to following the EXACT same rules with his wife back in 2012." That's because Ta-Nehisi has a retarded name.
