Media Blacks Out 9th Circuit Ruling That 2nd Amendment Applies to State and Local Government
— Ace

A huge ruling (even if it was, in fact, substantially prefigured by Heller), and the MSM doesn't even bother reporting on it.

This isn't merely bias. "Bias" doesn't really explain it, exactly, because it's not as if failing to report the ruling somehow makes it go away.

This instead reporters and editors failing to cover it simply because they find this particular news unpleasant, and would rather live in a world in which it were not the law (at least in the states patrolled by the 9th circuit).

And so, simply by refusing to concede the ruling happened, the cocoon their readers -- and themselves -- from the unpleasantness.

Reality-based community or community-based reality? You be the judge.

The Enchanted Media (TM) often knocks the blogosphere as catering to one particular viewpoint, and providing our readers only with stories they like, while avoiding those that might discomfit them.

And that rap is... true, to an extent.

But, as John Bender famously asked, "And what about you, Dad? NO, DAD -- WHAT ABOUT YOU?!!!"

Why would they report on this when there's plenty of opportunities to crow about the (non-existant) "gunshow loophole", repeating the (false) canard that Mexican gangs get most of their weapons from the US, and confusing the public about the difference between an automatic and semi-automatic firearm?

With pictures of  the specialists prominently displayed and related stories on CIA misconduct. Disgraceful and dangerous. It's the 2nd story now and it is sourced by current and former government officials. How does Obama's ass taste CIA?

32 Gun thread!

I just picked up some comparatively cheap 5.56mm from Midway USA -- 1000 rounds for about .40 per round. That's about .15 a round off of prices I've been seeing everywhere else. I'm still hunting around for some cheap .40S&W handgun ammo -- I bought a couple of boxes for target practice, but it's too damned expensive to shoot just for fun.

Got my new ACOG today too and mounted it on my AR. I plan to burn up a lot of 5.56mm this weekend getting it zeroed.

38 Just read the CIA thing myself.  I just read this disturbing tidbit:

"A federal judge in New York is currently considering whether or not to make public the written logs of the interrogation sessions.

The tapes were destroyed by the CIA, but the written logs still exist, although the CIA is fighting their release."

I see this as taking two paths: 1) We learn how much it helped, and what information was obtained, though this will likely be completely overrun by the other path, 2) the media has a field day blacking out the useful information and goes traipsing around with every opportunity where they didn't give in, talking about how brutal and evil the CIA, Darth Cheney, and the Evil Monkey Bushitler McHaliburton were.

Also, I note that the two guys are being claimed to be frauds with no torture experience.  I'd hate to say it but...well, if they weren't, how the hell did they get there in the first place?  There has to be some reason, so what is it?  But I know they'll be paraded around as frauds and 'vetted' accordingly by the media, like Ms. California, Joe the Plumber, and the AIG executives all have been.

This country is going to Hell, and I don't know what to do to stop it.

39 It's a calling.

Liberal: "But, Monty, how can you hunt those poor hobos?"

Monty: "Well, first of all, you have to remember to bring enough gun. Nothing smaller than a .270, and I prefer a .308 or .300H&H magnum, depending on how big the bum is. You have to remember that these guys may be drunks, drug addicts, and crazy people; but they're surprisingly big and fast. I prefer a rifle to a pistol because you often have to get them at weird angles and from a distance: say when they're grubbing through a trash-can or something. Then, you have to get a quality taxidermy man to work on the carcass -- those trophies you seen my living room were done by Howie Schluckman. He's the best in the business."

Liberal: (Anguished silence.)

Monty: Oh, you mean "how can I hunt hobos" as in "isn't it a shame that I hunt hobos", not "what is your method for hunting hobos". You really need to be more specific with this kind of thing.

Liberal: You're disgusting!

Monty: Yeah, yeah. You gotta do what makes you happy. Want some hobo jerky? I made it myself!

40 I just picked up some comparatively cheap 5.56mm from Midway USA -- 1000 rounds for about .40 per round.

Damn you. I'm living on beans & rice while we get our new business up & running so no new ammo for me.

Luckily, I have components on hand for about 1000 5.56 reloads, so I don't feel so bad.

44 IllTemperedCur:

I have hopes that the whole "ammo scare" is passing. For awhile there there was simply no 5.56mm to be had anywhere, regardless of price. Even that cheap-ass Wolf steelcase stuff was hard to find. But in the last week or so everyone seems to be getting new batches of the stuff, and prices are coming down.

Handgun ammo is still hard to get, though, and expensive even when you can find it.

The range manager was telling me the other day that even our little gun club has seen its membership almost double since Bammer took office. And this is in the People's Republic of Minnesota.

53 Guys going into WalMart first thing in the morning and buying every box of 9mm WWB so they can double their price on GunBroker.

In a way, I'm torn: on one hand, I think it's probably wise to stockpile a bit of ammo for contingencies. On the other, ammo's not that hard to get, and lots of the douchebags buying it up aren't even going to shoot it. (I'm praying for the day that prices for ammo crash and these shitbirds are stuck with a garage full of ammo they can't use and can't sell.)

I guess it just depends on how close you think the Apocalypse is. A Democrat White House and a Democrat-controlled congress has put the skeer in a lot of gun-owning folks, Heller notwithstanding. I think that's why handgun ammo is harder to find than rifle ammo.

A thread that I can bore people with my gun story, excellent!

My current deer rifle is a hand built 30-40 caliber single shot rifle. I have taken 3 deer with it to date. That, in itself isn't special. What is special is that I built the rifle myself, from drawings. I cut the Black walnut tree and dragged it out of the woods, and cut a slab I carved the stock from. I taught myself to checker and checkered the stock myself. I bought a combination mill/lathe machine tool and machined the receiver from hardened and tempered 4140 alloy. I made the internal parts from 4140 and O-1 tool steel which I then austempered in my forge. I bought a bbl. blank and contour turned it, chambered it, threaded it and then installed it in the receiver with wrenches I made myself. I made the special tools and fixtures I needed to machine all the little parts. I then blued the rifle in a steel tank I made myself with the slow rust process. I was given a 70's era weaver scope which I sent off to Weaver scope repair service in El Paso to recondition. I then mounted the scope with Leopold rings on mounts I modified from a Ruger #1. The whole rifle finished up at 6 pounds ready to fire. It shoots 1 1/2" groups with factory loads or my handloads at 100 yards. My investment in time was 800 hours +. The design of the weapon is called De Haas Vault Lock # 2 (I modified it to suit my design likes, for instance the original did not have a free floating bbl. Mine does) Muzzle vel. with 150 grain bullets is 2700 fps.

I think this qualifies me as an especially sick redneck.

@59: except the liberals here are closet socialists

Closet socialists?...in Toronto?  They have a real bona-fide communist party down there in southern Ontario....then there's the NDP which are also communists but they try to hide it behind the word 'Democratic' in 'New Democratic Party'.  Then of course we have the Liberals who got dragged into communism in the 70's and haven't been back since.  The only thing that's saving us is cuz there are so many commie parties warring for power that it helps cancel some of it out.

Another lefty deceipt which we need to always point out is that socialist and communist are the same thing...they are always hiding behind semantics.   They say it's not at all the same thing and poo poo it but it is.  The Soviets were the 'Union of Soviet Socialist Republics'...that tells it all right there.  Stalin killed how many of his own people?...12 million?...something like that?

'Socialist' doesn't sound that bad to a kid.

The problem with ignoring court rulings by the press is - ignoring doesn't make it go away.  It is there.  And I am sure it will be a 'big surprise' to various people when it is cited.

Wishing does not make it so, nor does wishing make it not so.  It is.  That is the hallmark of the adult world - your and my druthers are not important compared to what is.  Unicorns and rainbows are optional.

72 68 It was pure luck.. I wandered into a local toy store and my eye was drawn to it immediately as it stood out next to the other evil black rifles... yes love at first sight. I just got my first shipment of 20 round magazines and ammo today and it will be out on the range hopefully within the next several days.

I figure it will reach out and touch the hobo's that don't get drawn in close by my plastic bait bag filled with aluminum cans...

Monty @ 70

Thanks. Huge amount of work. The best part is when someone notices the rifle on my shoulder (during hunting season) and says "what kinda rifle is that maddogg"? Then I get to tell the whole story again.

I have written your name prominently in my "catastrophe book", and will call on  you if and when the zombie apocalypse is upon us. I have a feeling that a competent gunsmith will be in high demand.

Maddogg, is that like a drop block, or what?  Did you have a how-to guide, or just a diagram to trial and error from?  Quite a feat, regardless!

78 Another one of my cool finds recently was a couple of brand-new Magpul 20-round AR mags for about twenty bucks apiece. I've been hunting for some Magpul mags forever -- another one of those pieces of gear that's gotten very hard to find recently. (I never much cared for the 30-round AR mags, and the 20-round mags match the 20-round ammo boxes.)

It is a falling block design. The dimensions on the drawings were general, rather than precise. The designer said it was deliberate because many people can't do high precision work and would be intimidated by precision tolerances.  BS, says I. I drew the entire thing up and laid it out on AutoCad, dimensioned to +/-.001 " and then made most of the parts from my own drawings. I am a Mechanical Engineer and work with .0001" tolerances daily, so close tolerance drawings are a comfort to me, not something to fear.

The guidebook I worked from features several other designs as well, and is available from Brownells Gunsmith Supply. The book is called "Mr. Single Shot's book of rifle plans." by Frank and Mark De Haas.I would also recommend "Building a Single Shot, Falling Block Rifle Action" By Walter Mueller, as it gives a lot of information and ideas on machining techniques and tooling.

80 Nothing lower than a journalist. Not even a politician. I figure 10% of lawyers are decent, honest folk. Maybe 6% of politicians. Maybe 2% of journalists as far as I can tell.

Maybe if they stopped CONSTANTLY LYING I might not hate the bastards so much, but that doesn't seem likely.

Did I mention that reporters are scum? I think I may have.

81 Maddogg,
Thanks for the info. I get my Dad's Brownell catalogs every time he gets a new one. I'll look for those books.  My brother in law has milling equipment, but I think your project is way above my current abilities. Never want to run out of projects though!

82 ITC, are you having any problem finding brass for handguns?  I had a hell of a time finding extra 45 ACP brass. Finally got some at a gun show.  Bullets and primers seem fairly available, but high.

Even though I've only been reloading for about a year, I've been saving/collecting brass for awhile. There's a public shooting area in the coastal mountains here, and one of the trails that I hike summits about 1/4 mile down the road. I'd always stop and do a brass run there, as well as when I went there to shoot. I picked up damned near anything, even stuff like .357SIG or .45GAP, which I have no intention of ever shooting. Pick up everything, any caliber. You can always trade for what you need.

Check your local scrap metal dealer as well. There's a scrap dealer in Oxnard that I used to deal with for work several years ago. He had several 55 gal drums full of military .45ACP brass, most likely from the local Navy base. I'm still kicking myself

Funny brass story: The last time I took my AR to a formal range this summer, I was nearly alone on the firing line. Just another guy and his 7 yr old daughter shooting a .22. She saw me picking up my brass and reboxing it, so during cease fires she started running around picking up brass and bringing it over to me, while her Dad was at the bench laughing. She must have picked up 100-150 rounds of 5.56 brass for me.

84 This is no surprise that the MSM is ignoring this.  The MSM got barry elected and has and will provide cover for him.  The MSM is a subsidiary of the dim party.  They chose sides when clintonev got in and haven't looked back.  There is a bright side to this.  They are propping up pols that are increasingly marxists.  Marxists will not tolerate dissent.  MSM's profits are decreasing or going away.  More "journalists" are being layed off.  More papers are going out of business.  They are in a death spiral because more and more people are using less of the product.  They are tired of being insulted and lied to.  Why pay for that?  Their constitutional duty is to be the nation's watchdog, not a lapdog for one party.  The death spiral continues.
