Limbaugh: 'Republican Party Wants a New Base'
— rdbrewer

Embed fixed. I had the wrong one up.

Fantastic interview with Greta Van Susteren.

The Republican leadership isn't conservative. . . . [Conservatives] constitute a threat to the way Washington views the country. And I don't think it's so much conservative versus liberal, although it is; it's Washington versus the rest of the country.

It's a must-see interview. He talks about Detroit, poverty, the fact that the Democrat party needs a permanent underclass, immigration and more.

Below the fold is the first of several parts. Follow the links for the rest.

1 I've been a critic of Rush for quite a while because I think the internet has taken away a lot of his usefulness and, frankly, I think he's gotten a bit lazy with his success as far as attention to detail; but he's bang spot on with this.

2 Well, it's true. The GOP in Washington has this idea that they are our bosses and we need to obey them. They don't understand how the relationship Is supposed to work. Someone prominent needs to step up and call for a new party.

8 I heard a few minutes of Rush's show yesterday and he was talking about this interview. I kept thinking he sounded like he was about to call for a third party but I never heard him actually say it. I wonder if he's leaning that way. Probably not, but I wonder.

35 So it comes down to what's easier and more likely to actually work:

Option A - Start from scratch with a brand new party.

Option B - Hostile takeover of the Republican Party, complete with purges, banishment, public humiliations, etc.

Pick your poison.

43 #37  They get their big money from those 100 donors.  The mailings to us are a way to make us feel like we are not mainstream.

I have ranted to RNC callers for more times than I can count.  I have asked to be taken off all call lists.  I have told them they are not defending us,  and that they lied to me during the last campaign (they did).

Now I am getting the "past due" mailings.  I have been a Republican since 1980 and am just so frustrated and disheartened than I cannot work up any interest in who even gets the presidential nomination.

So,  "Put not your trust in princes" is a Bible verse I keep in mind.  I am devoting my time to helping my family and my church.

50 He's right. I think the establishment Republicans are ashamed and embarrassed by the evangelicals, fiscal conservatives, Tea Partiers, and libertarians who make up a sizable chunk of their base and are trying instead to appeal to the mythical "moderate voters" out there. Not that they don't want the aforementioned groups to still vote for them, but they sure as hell aren't interested in pandering to them(quite the opposite in some cases like with amnesty).

The irony is that the GOP will wind up with the worst of both worlds. So-called moderates will be nowhere to be found since most voters are partisans even they refuse to admit it to pollsters. And the base will grow disenchanted and stay home. Say what you will about how awful the Democrats are at running the country, but they at least understand that in order to win national elections, you better appeal to your base first and foremost.

56 GOP is doing what the Tory's did in the UK. Posted by: steevy This is exactly correct, and for the same reason. Bringing in a bunch of immigrants to change the demographics is only part of the story. Philosophically, they GAVE UP. They (the Tories) admitted to themselves that they did not have competing ideas for Labor's Socialism and Statism. They are now just different flavors of the same shit. And that is where the Republican "leadership" is going, because those with the levers and deep pockets of the party (Richard Nixon used to call them the Eastern Establishment, e.g., Nelson Rockefeller). This struggle has been going on for decades, when the Republicans were lost in the wilderness during the FDR years. This is the clearest sign of moral and philosophical surrender by the "Republicans". Then the money follows. Winning for the sake of "winning" is meaningless because there is not a qualitative or quantitative difference between the parties. Either we fix the party (unlikely at this point), or start a real third party. And this is all proceeding as Obama and the Democrats intended: The creation of a One Party State.

I've gotten at least two "Past Due!" notices from the RNC in the last six months.   I send them back covered in     insulting graffiti.   Fuckers can sit and spin for   all I care.      Since when do I have to pay fucking DUES    for the  "honor"   of voting Pubbie, for chrissakes?

But it   pisses me off because I KNOW -- KNOW -- that there are elderly people out there who are getting these notices and honestly think, "Oh no!  What'd I forget to pay?"  and sending off money FOR NO REASON AT ALL.     It's disgusting.

84 I remember several years ago someone in the conservative blogosphere (do we even call it that anymore) commented upon how it always seemed that American politics are always 12 years behind British politics.

We seem to be repeating the Labour/Tories back stab of the British public again with another mass amnesty to import a new voting base for both parties (of course the majority will still go to the Democrats/Labour, but that's by design).

88 SMOD is going to hit. Doom is coming. The collapse is inevitable. Everybody knows this. One possible outcome is a federalism of necessity as people abandon a couple of Maslow levels as they are forced to deal with levels they've never had to worry about in their lives. Most if not all of the things that the political class arrogated to the federal government over the last hundred years will devolve into state, local, or individual responsibilities. The more likely outcome is that democratic totalitarianism (tyranny of the majority) will let fly and finish stomping rule of law into the dust. Producers will have to STFU and keep on trucking as their savings are confiscated and their earnings are devalued by inflation because "I won" said so. Takers will not likewise be forced to accept that their take-home redistribution will not buy as much as it used to. Instead, they will be told that they cannot have nice things because the meanass producers are holding out on them. The GOPers selling out are betting on the latter. That looks like the safer bet at this point. The only hope I can see is to accept that our immediate tomorrows will be worse than the yesterdays still pretty fresh in our memories. Once you let yesterday go, you can objectively compare possible tomorrows against one another.

In fact, there are no politicians who even dare to explain it; the days of a Ronald Reagan are over. (It still mystifies me why no one in the GOP emulates Reagan today--he won!) He also is the best analyst around. He originated the Limbaught Theorem, which I hope lots of new people hear about.

My liberal relatives BTW can't understand why TFG doesn't speak out against the rot in black precincts as opposed to the Trayvon case or why he's for amnesty.  *face palm*

The tea party has already been established, all it would take is for a Senator like Ted Cruz to renounce membership in the Republican party and become an exclusively tea party. It can be done. Then start taking over the leadership of your local organization. Our libertarian block did just that in L.A. County in Jan 2013. If we were a state we'd be the 10th largest delegation. And I want know who the fuck at the RNC is manning the phones, opening the solicitation letters.

I'm pretty sure it goes like this, at least so far as the solicitation letters go:

*Intern gets mail*

*Intern opens mail*

*Intern looks for check, money order, or credit card information*

*If    none of these things are present,   intern     trashes letter*

Repeat ad infinitum.

As for the phone calls, I suspect the staffers who receive them have been coached to say   conciliatory things, but on the other end of the line they're doing one of two things:

A) Rolling their eyes and thinking, "I don't get paid enough for this shit" (and they're right); or

B) Making exaggerrated wanking motions.

Disgusting.

160 it is not republican vs democrat any longer, it is Washington vs the rest of the country, exactly what the founders were afraid of, so many problems, who gets to vote for their raises, who votes for their time off,  who get's paid to vote, kickbacks to support this or that, the whole country agreed DC was broken and Obama's promises to fix is what got him elected but again he was full of shit, and the American people ate it up! The media is corrupt aiding and abetting the president to continue the lies and covering for him. We need term limits and a 3rd party. We need Americans to come together and hold all politicians accountable no matter what side they are on!

[ i ] for italics

[ b ] for bold

[ s ] for strikethrough

something I've wondered: why do conservatives allow the GOP to define the party/position? Are there more of (fill in your favorite pejorative for Democrat who is on the R ticket here) than (fill in your favorite term for true conservative)? Is it all about money and control of the 'high' positions in the party?

Shouldn't this be a more selective system? Isn't the Republican party supposed to represent us, the registered (or formerly registered) members?

Prebius should be out after the debacle of 2012. Don't enough hold that point of view or just the wrong type of 'us'? Likewise Rove, and anyone else who tanked the election. They didn't produce results, why should I give them another chance?

Likewise for the elected representatives: McCain is an example of who should be dis-invited to the party, since he's not exactly expressing core conservative values.

Rather than going 3rd party shouldn't an effort be made to truly clean up the Republican party or is the name/brand too damaged?

</mindless rambling; thanks for letting me waste your e-paper>

174 Re Third Parties.  The reason that it would be easier to retake the Republican party than to create a new party is that in each state, the two party rule has been institutionalized in such things as poll watching, campaign finance and ethics, etc.  Laws governing campaigns give all sorts of benefits for major parties while hurting minor parties.
Generally, third parties get what crumbs they can get because of quiet sponsorship and financing by a major party.  Thus, Dems support Libertarian interests because they believe that it will hurt the GOP.  Likewise, the Repubs quietly support parties such as the Green Party because they believe that it will take votes from the Dems.

Read Robert Heinlein's Take Back Your Government for pointers on how to retake your local party apparatus.  If the Paulists can do so, then conservatives can too.  The key mistake to avoid that the Paulists have made is that not to push things that are non-starters that scare the chickens.  Unless there is a crisis, conservatives must play the long game just like the progressives have done.  People generally vote their economic interests and seek to avoid losses in such.  Thus, for the long run so you will need to persuade a majority that conservative policies will help them benefit. It took 100 years of progressivism to get us to this place, it might take a generation or two to fix it at the least.
Assuming SMOD of some sort doesn't arrive then all bets are off.  The chances for some sort of Mussolini winning/seizing office become quite good.  I think someone like Chris Christie could quite possibly view themself like Il Duce.

176 A third party dilutes the opposition to the Democrats. What the Republican base needs to do is "hang a few admirals to encourage the rest", and maybe more than a few. The primaries are the only legal gallows we have, so we need to use them! #1: McCain #2: Graham...

Posted by: Ray Van Dune at July 31, 2013 07:31 AM (qIFL7)

177 Option A - Start from scratch with a brand new party.

Option B - Hostile takeover of the Republican Party, complete with purges, banishment, public humiliations, etc.

I don't think B is doable.  They are entrenched the top.  The idle rich get up at 10:00 am, an hour before welfare recipients, to go a brunch meeting at the club.  So they can plan the next $5000 a plate fund raiser.  Don't know about yuz-guys, but I can't spring for that party.  They proably spend more for the party than they raise, but it's expedience.  Look what they did to Col. West.

Posted by: Paladin at July 31, 2013 07:35 AM (QGbEp)

178 The dominant party is the Washingtons. The emerging party is the rest of us. The issue is the current federal structure compels Democrats to worhsip centralize power and compels Republicans to accept it. The result: Washington is fully represented in Washington. The rest of us, not so much. But one thing to think about. Why did the IRS feel so threatened by the Tea Party? You now, to pull such a risky stunt, well is pretty risky. It's fucking felonious for shits sake. You would not target the Tea Party unless you felt they were a clear and present danger. Well, the IRS is right. The Tea Party is that big of a threat. My point is this, we get a few good spokesmen like Rush Nd something to trigger an outburst, and all of the Washington bullshit could be over quickly. And the rest of us could go back to making money.

I want to be part of a new party's base.

The Libertarians have a shaky foreign policy stance that has kept this military man out of there but...I am starting to think that they might be the ticket.

Where is the Tea Party? Why can't they be a choice on my ballot free and independent of the Republicans?

Posted by: sgmstv at July 31, 2013 07:54 AM (crTpS)

180

To those who say that a Third Party just dilutes the Republican vote...who cares?

Look at what the Republicans have given up over the years. It is death by dribbles. They get villianized by Democrats for Issue A, they refuse to budge in Issue A because thier base hates Issue A for awhile, then the perceived villiany for opposition to Issue A becomes Issue A and the former Issue A becomes Issue B.

Then, since Issue A is now Republican Villiany they decide to solve the new Issue A by conceding on Issue B.

So who really cares if we split the vote? All that does is let the damage happen more quickly instead of the slow death we suffer now.

They fought a good fight against Obamacare but only because the emerging Tea Party forced it. Look at Amnesty...Amnesty is an Issue B for them now. Issue A is not looking racist. For me, Issue A is still Amnesty. I need that party.

The only reason they stand behind the 2nd Amendment is because failing to would birth a 3rd party almost instantly.
