Lesbian Superhero Takes Gotham
— Ace

The times gets all gushy about efforts to introduce new Hispanic, Chinese, black, and gay characters into the comics.

Because we're so nostalgic for Super Samurai, Apache Chief, and Black Vulcan.

Kind of annoying is the introduction of a lesbian "Batwoman." First of all-- aren't lesbians already super-heroes of a sort? Second of all -- DC, in particular, periodically promises us they will stop with the 40's and 50's era nonsense of just making new Bat-characters and Super-characters. In the eighties, they got rid of Supergirl, for example, and promised us that was the end of the Superman knock-offs; from now on, there would be no Super-dogs, Super-monkeys, Superboys, Superwomans, etc.; Kal El would be the Last and Only Son of Krypton.

That held for about three months, then Superboy and Supergirl came back.

It's kind of lame to just have a new Batman, only this time, she's a chick. And a "buxom, lipstick lesbian socialite." Okay, admittedly, that last part has potential, but come on, you know they're not going to have any fun with this. As most gay characters are portrayed, she'll be about as sexually adventurous as a 88-year-old Oklahoma deacon.

Another effort to link old and new characters centers on Kathy Kane, the gay Batwoman who will appear in costume for the first time in a July issue of "52." Batwoman was introduced in 1956, but she was one of several, often silly additions to the Bat family, including Ace the Bat-Hound (1955), Bat-Mite (1959) and Bat-Girl (1961). In her latest incarnation, Batwoman is a wealthy, buxom lipstick lesbian who has a history with Renee Montoya, an ex-police detective who has a starring role in "52."

What really bothers me, though, is that DC is introducing a team of ten Chinese superheroes. And when I say "Chinese," I don't mean "Chinese-American." Nor do I mean Taiwanese. I mean Red Chinese, and furthermore, directly controlled by the Chinese communist government.

And they don't seem to be bad guys, from the NYT's description. No, they're heroes-- who just happen to fight for Truth, Justice, and the Great Leap Forward.

Check out the "Socialist Red Guardsman," for example.

I am less bothered by the multi-culti crap than I am by the multinationalist stuff. The Chinese government can be described in different ways -- strategic competitor, rival, enemy biding its time -- but it cannot be described as an ally. And yet DC Comics has decided, it seems, to propagandize on their behalf.

Liberals often criticize corporations for not having the interests of the American people in mind... and they are, often, right. They have their own interests in mind, which is the way of the world.

But I'm becoming a bit more liberal in my view of corporations, as I see DC Comics attempting to help the Chinese government by giving them their own super-team, and Google censoring on behalf of the Chinese government, etc.

Of course, I realize that liberals probably defend these actions. They don't mind when corporations act against America's best interests, so long as they're acting in one of America's enemies' best interests.

I can't wait until DC unveils the "New Jihadis," a super-team of radicalized Muslims who gain their powers from an unshakable belief in Allah and who have all sorts of neat powers, like being able to blow up civilians without remorse. Hey, it's an underserved segment of the market; might as well try to make a buck there too, huh?

PS, DC is kind of tone-deaf as regards its Chinese super-team. One character, "Mother of Champions," gives birth to a "litter" of 25 super-warriors every three days. Another character, "Seven Deadly Brothers," can split into seven different fighters.

Odd, isn't it, that two of the Chinese teams' members have the power of superpopulating, eh? Why no character named "One in a Billion"?

Might as well call the team "The Yellow Hordes" and be done with it.

Thanks to Kent.

2 This is kind of the same effect as the 60s when they had monkeys and all the members of the family as superheroes, krypto the dog and all. Now it's every member of the PC family! The lesbian, the cripple, the black woman, the illegal immigrant Weback Man! And it's just as silly because its contrived. This isn't story-driven, its ideology-driven.

4 In 2003 I think, DC had a justice league or some such, that had the DC heroes in Iraq, not fighting jihadi's, but rather had Superman proclaiming "this is an illegal war."

DC sucks, I liked batman and nightwing, oh, and okay, green lantern for a bit, but in general the editors and artists have no respect for the characters that they give voice too.

Marvel has always had a respect for the characters, and the "worlds" in which they lived, though I think Darkhorse had some of the best comics on the planet.

5 So how exactly does the 'Mother of Champions' get around China's one child per family law? Does she have secret anti-forced-abortion powers? A depleted uranium cervix, perhaps?

7 I see this move by DC as typical of a corporation.
Corporations cater to their customers.

In this case, the customers are young people who read comics. And those people tend to be, by and large, losers. Geeks, nerd, loners, dorks, misfits, weirdos. Whatever you want to call them, that's what most are -- losers. DC needs to keep up with the times. Today's losers are no the same as yesterday's losers.

The losers of today are less interested in the classic fight of good vs. evil, and more interested in the "freak" who had to "deal" with the "normal" people. Today's losers are looking for rebels who do not battle evil people, but they battle society's stifling and repressive demand for conformity.

Have you seen the cartoon series, Teen Titans? Those poor kids battle their inner-demons and society more than they battle bad guys. X-Men is another example of the hero for losers. The characters in X are mutants, outcasts. The losers can identify with them.

9 Back in the 1950's the Keyfavther Hearings claimed that Batman and Robin were GAY characters. Even Seanbaby on his site rips apart the homoerotic imagery of the superfriends cartoons. Like Kairo raiding Green Lantern's ASS. I AM NOT MAKING THAT UP either.

10 They've run out of ideas.

They've gone through every color they know, every animal they know, every occupation they know, every ethnic group they know.

Now they're working on "lifestyles".

Next, cartoon heros based on old 60s sitcoms. It's all they've got left.

31 In this PC world, putting "minorities" into comics requires walking a veeeery delicate line. The characters tend to be such outsized characters, they verge on charicatures, which gets dangerously close to stereotypes, which is a major sin now. "Why is Bat-African-American so muscular? Are you saying blacks are only good for sports?" Or the opposite, "Why is Green-Black-Lantern less athletic than the other heros? You must fear a strong black man!" Trying to make the PC police happy is a fool's errand.

after all kids who read books for entertainment are considered losers in middle and highschool. Kids who get A's and take part in extra curricular activities are treated as losers. Kids who continue participation in non proffitable sports during the summer are considered losers.

You bitch about immigrants overflowing from their countries and filling the void you leave in yours, as if it could go any other way. And you look down smugly on the homosexuals, as if there's no question whether your own gonads are living up to their potential.

43 Hi all,

Posted by Ace:

DC, in particular, periodically promises us they will stop with the 40's and 50's era nonsense of just making new Bat-characters and Super-characters.
As I understand it, this was really done mostly for the purposes of getting copyright on anything with "Super-" or "Bat-" in the name, to make it harder for other companies to do knockoffs or parodies.

Back in the days when the occasional non-moonbat writer could get a title at DC, a villain team called Jihad was a major enemy in the Suicide Squad book; they were super-powered Middle Eastern terrorists with ties to the fictional nation of "Qurac". In a move that nowadays seems more than a little ironic, most of the Jihad were killed by a nuclear suicide bomber - disgraced Suicide Squad leader Col. Rick Flagg infiltrated their headquarters and set off a recovered prototype Nazi nuke.

DC has long been infested with drooling leftist morons. So the super-enforcers for the Chinese politburo are heroic - what a shocker. DC's only overtly patriotic-themed American super-team was the Force of July. Officially government-backed, with high security clearances and broad discretion in their actions. They were, of course, introduced as villains in the pages of The Outsiders. This was back in the early- to mid-'80's. Plus ça change...

Marvel, incidentally, seems also to be dipping its toes into political waters with its upcoming Civil War crossover event. It involves a registration act similar to those that have popped up in the X-titles, but for all superhumans, not just mutants. Writers and editors involved have supposedly had episodes of typical MSM-type liberal bias in their titles, but the presence of high-profile heroes on both sides of the divide gives some hope that this won't descend yet again into the all-too-common unanswered leftist harangues.

Manga can be divided into various sub-genres. The "huge eyes and hair like artichokes" is only dominant in the "for kiddies" manga. The more adult stuff is very realistic. Much more then Marvel and DC comics for example.

47 I think comics are more associated with losers because the fans are getting older and older. When the average comic fan was 10 years old or so, there was nothing loser-like about reading a comic book, so simple good vs. evil sufficed. Now that the average comics fan is 30 years old (including myself), you have a lot more misfits in the fanbase that have a persecution complex and a general bitterness toward life's perceived unfairness...a lot of who happen to be liberals.

Superwomyn realizes the masculine bankruptcy of all violence and thus subdues her foes through discussion, communication, and the free exchange of ideas: her "Vagina of Endless Monologues" talks enemies into submission: they must save every round or be affected as though under the influence of a "feeblemind" spell.

68 Didn't the Suicide Squad get some help from Hayoth--the Israeli superteam? Anyone seen them since the 80s?
