Leftwing "Wonks" Shocked Again to Learn Basic Things
— Ace

I would propose a simple definition of "expert:" One who is not surprised or even stunned to learn the basics of his claimed field of expertise.

By this definition, the left has a serious lack of experts.

I might add to the definition of "expert:" One who is interested in a subject matter and motivated to learn as much about it as possible, even if such fresh learning might cut against his base partisan impulses.

I'm afraid the left is studded with "experts" who fail this prong of the definition, as well:

See Sean Davis' piece for leftist "wonks" claiming that the argument in Halbig couldn't possibly be accurate, or else it would prove them (those who supposedly follow this subject in all its details) to be "idiots."

And of course -- we know that couldn't possibly be true.

Don't we?

Oh: The below video recapitulates Jon Gruber's meanderings.

You have to devote a crap ton of time and energy, and sacrifice in other areas of your life to become an "expert" in anything.

It's tedious, time consuming, and can be harmful.

62 "and yet these retards kick our ass." Well, the right hasn't been losing to tightly reasoned factual argumentation anyway. The losses have been to a series of sales pitches that would embarrass the sleaziest of used car salesmen. "Your health insurance premiums will go down by $2500 a year, and if you like your policy, you can keep your policy, and if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor!" A series of gaudy promises which anyone with a lick of common sense knew at the moment they were voiced would not and could not be kept. However, most of the electorate lack even that lick. They had to figure it out the hard way. Now, though, after those voters being repeatedly bludgeoned by the reality of those promises having been shown to be hollow, with more bludgeonings yet to come (the Fuse On The Employer Mandate Bomb called to say "Ssssssssssssss"), there is a window to win with a new message.

From personal experience (and some introspection) most arrogance seems to be rooted in fear. Even the high-flying surgeon, brilliant and arrogant, is afraid of failure, underneath. People who claim to be experts, and aren't, are afraid that their ignorance will be exposed.

Genuine experts have, as noted (#31, caliban), a humility rooted in a fearless realization that they could be wrong, or ignorant, or whatever. A genuine expert is still a learner.

The arrogant "expert" is impervious to learning.

A series of gaudy promises which anyone with a lick of common sense knew at the moment they were voiced would not and could not be kept.

143 The problem with 'experts' is that that more often than not, they aren't. As Reagan is often quoted as saying, "...much of what they know is wrong." Richard Feynman once said that it is the job of physicists to prove experts wrong. Many people become 'experts' simply because they have never been challenged and confronted. It is amusing that the stoogy duo on Mythbusters solemnly refer to themselves as experts, and yet they are in fact clownish buffoons, blundering from one doomed experiment to another. Little surprised I was that they appeared with Obama at one point. Anyone who has spent time engaged in liability litigation quickly learns that it possible to produce (buy) an 'expert' that will say anything. I understand Ace's description, and it is valid, it just doesn't occur very often, and almost never among the self-declared. I cannot count the times that I have witnessed someone engaged in a task and questioned the methodology only to be told, "I've been doing this for twenty years, and it it's always worked (I'm an expert!). When I hear that, I mentally add, "..., yeah, and it will work, until it doesn't". As a parting shot, I'll simply say, Bill Nye, The Science Guy, Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Happened to mention this at a party a few days later, in a crowd of urban Democrats, who all chimed up "Oh, that's so simple, we've been doing it for a long time, just ...." yadayadayada. Did the download, plugged in the camera, all seems OK; but since this was a critical business discussion, I wanted to run a test before showtime. Ya know, out of all of those longtime Skype users, not one could help me out, presenting a bunch of lameass excuses just like we hear daily from DC: "Don't actually have it installed right now", "Our dog are the cable", "Oh, that's on my other laptop". IOW, not one of them was an actual Skype user, they just wanted to sound hip and smarter-than-me. Interview went off fine, but now we have a little private joke when we hear another "expert" spouting off: "Another Skype user". *cue Nelson Muntz* Democrats, lying in your face, 24/365.

177 I have two master's degrees, being probably too ADD and having too much self-esteem to put up with a Ph.D. program. I went to a state university in the vasty vastness of the American Outback (the part that is remote even from Flyover Country). I snicker--or sometimes openly laugh at--people who misguidedly try to impress me with the weighty information that they went to an Ivy. In much the same way that, when I worked at a university, I quickly learned that the professors who insisted that you call them by their first names were generally good people and eminently worthy of respect, whereas on the other hand the ones who insisted that you (a mere staff member )refer to them as "Doctor" were clueless dumbfucks, not worth a piss in a snowbank.

What sealed the deal for me was that when the climate change guy spoke, he said pretty much the following: "Since it's overwhelmingly clear that my side of the argument is correct, I'm not even going to make an argument. Instead, I'll spend my portion of the debate showing you the frightening consequences of climate change." That settled it for me right then and there that this is nothing buy bullying snake oil.

I have to admit I was buying the theory at first.  Carbon Dioxide release was increasing radiative capture thereby slowly increasing temperature?   Sure, makes a sort of sense.

Then I saw a chart which demonstrated the spectral absorption characteristics of Oxygen, Nitrogen, C02, CH4, and vaporous H20.

H20 vapor was by far the strongest component of the system and most abundant.  If the theory was correct, the H20 vapor should have killed us a billion years ago.  The planet ought to be an 800 degree hell hole, but it isn't.

Water vapor starts as a positive feedback effect, but when it reaches a sufficient level in the atmosphere it flips, and becomes a negative feedback effect.   (i.e. Self Regulating.)

That chart told me immediately that the C02 theory was full of shit.  Water is the dominant effect.

228 It's worse than simple intellectual laziness. It's deliberate dishonesty given gravitas under the guise of "expertise". They know what the cult wants and that policy wise it's really hard to get with an honest appraisal. They're the opposite of what they claim. Their job is to muddy the waters, to confuse the general public in order to advance the cause. Are some sloppy and disinterested? Sure, but that's the least of their faults. That they're deliberate propagandists for a political ideology is far more important and windows into just what kind of people they are.

Bader's early family life was not well.  Older brother would pinch off bits of Douglas' face when Douglas was a baby.  Then left in England.  Then WWI and Bader's father killed.  Mother married a parson and Douglas got packed off to relatives because he was a problem child.  While with relatives he started to kill cats but he found rugby and then later the RAF.
