Interesting: Study Suggests That Liberals Tend To Avoid Thinking About The Negative, While Conservatives Focus on It
— Ace

The finding isn't screamingly biased, at least not to me, because here, I don't see that denialism is the "better" response when seeing something terrible.

But that seems to be the liberal psychology. Conservatives, if we have a flaw, and we don't, tend to dwell on the negative.

Winter's coming, you say? Bah.
Just more of your Jesus-talk.

Conducted by scientists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and published in the February 16 issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences, the study monitored the eye movements and skin conductance of participants from both sides of the political spectrum when shown the same series of images. Some of the images were benign, others less so. According to a press release from the university:

While liberals’ gazes tended to fall upon the pleasant images, such as a beach ball or a bunny rabbit, conservatives clearly focused on the negative images—of an open wound, a crashed car or a dirty toilet, for example.

This does seem to explain a large swath of conservative and liberal behavior. If a liberal proposes something dumb, like a guaranteed minimum income, conservatives immediately see that not only is that money being forcibly extracted from someone else (negative implication one), but that removing someone's motivation to be industrious at all will have pernicious effects down the line and lead to increased sloth, increased numbers of people getting handouts, increased need for wealth-extraction from the productive class, and ultimately a collapse of the whole system as the producers decide they'll stop producing, too, and just take their Government Check for Breathing (negative implication two).

Liberals seem to only get that one part about people having free money. You literally cannot get them to focus on the other things. They just glibly dismiss inevitable secondary effects ("You don't know that! You're not psychic!") and appeal to emotion ("I don't want to live in a world where a poor child doesn't have Starz On Demand").

This does reinforce some stereotypes, that conservatives tend to be worriers and planners and vigilance committee patrol people, whereas liberals tend to be Good Time Charlies. The old, "Who's gonna man that wall? You, Lieutenant Weinstein?"

Actually, this sounds to me like they're trying to dull the conclusion of a similar study from a couple of years ago.

They showed liberals and conservatives the same series of images, some good and some bad. (It sounds almost identical to the list here.) Conservatives had "happy" responses to the good images and "negative" responses to the bad ones (like fear, anger, or disgust). Liberals had the same "happy" responses to all images -- in fact, the same responses that sociopaths have. They simply had no negative reaction to negative situations.

This study sounds like they're trying to move the goal posts a little so that liberals aren't sociopaths, they just don't focus on the negative.

89 Conservatives, if we have a flaw, and we don't, tend to dwell on the negative.

-ace

Disagree that it can't be a flaw, since excessive pessimism can lead to an inability to see the options available, leading to a poorer choice than what might be optimal.

(Oh hey, wasn't meaning to, but that can translate to our presidential primary ... )

Aaaaand, I've just proven the article by focusing on the negative.   = P

Posted by: ConservativeMonster at February 29, 2012 08:57 AM (v3pYe)

90 maybe its becuase libtards are stage one thinkers who cant see the end result of their actions, and have an absurd outlook on the consequences of any of their actions, whereas conservatives see the negative becuase they are firmly rooted in reality
example, libtard: hey I want you and me to bungee jump off this bridge together for fun. it will be great, and we can talk about how awsome we are afterwards.

conservative: yes but I noticed this rope is frayed and untested for two individuals jumping together. we could get killed.
libtard: your too negative it will be fine!we would just land in the water.
conservative:  what water, I looked over the side of the bridge and its a dry riverbed. we will be smashed to a dead bloody pile of broken bones.
libtard: by the time we get their there will be water, you are so negative, how do you even come up with these negative thougts? your no fun.

This comes pretty close:

"The demand for presidential salvation hit its rhetorical nadir in the 1992 presidential debates, when a ponytailed social worker named Denton Walthall rose to ask Ross Perot, Bill Clinton, and President Bush the following question:

'The focus of my work as a domestic mediator is meeting the needs of the children that I work with, by way of their parents, and not the wants of their parents. And I ask the three of you, how can we, as symbolically the children of the future president, expect the two of you, the three of you to meet our needs, the needs in housing and in crime and you name it….'"

102 This is interesting, the one thing I cannot stand are people who are irrationally positive, pink bunnies and sunshine. It's not realistic. Nobody can be positive and fart rainbows 24 fucking 4 hours a day. So it's not the positivity that pisses me off, it's the fact that they are faking it half the fucking time.

If society only did what I and my fellow Poli-Sci majors from Harvard want, the country would be a utopia.

True story. When I was in law school, I was taking a legal philosophy class as an elective. We were discussing what would be the basis for a legal and political system should we be creating one from scratch. I started off with "Well, when I get my island". My professor actually put his head on his desk and said "I am going to regret asking this, but what do you mean when you get your island?" Me "When I get my island over which I am Queen of all of course." Him "Oh naturally and how do you plan to rule?" Me "By whim, naturally."  Him "At least you're honest."

Ended up with an A in that class. Good times, good times.

104 Focusing on the negatives has some positive results, sure, but it also has some negative results. People on the right are perpetually pessimistic and eeyorish, which makes it very hard for them to maintain their morale. It's not hard to see why, over the long run, we lose and the left wins. Today, Rasmussen once again shows Romney leading the president, but I assume that some other hack poll will come out later today showing the president up--and we'll take as indicative of the general trend.

110 I don't know about this study. It doesn't take into count the power of tribal enthusiasm and self-denial in joining a collective.

For instance, some tribal dogma on the left predicts "happiness" at being "right." Therefore they are conditioned to believe they are "happy" when they may or not actually be happy. The same thing applies to being smart. Leftists may or may not be smart, but they all "know" they are smart because they are "right."

My would use this study as a control group and have another set respond to the same pictures only tell them George W. Bush chose the photos.

It's all cocktail party science.

Nobody checks the stats, nobody understands the stats.

George Lucas goes on Oprah and basically said that his awful movie was shunned by Hollywood because of racism.  And Oprah (who I can't believe is so unaware of herself as to not know what Lucas was doing) agreed with the idea uncritically and encouraged everybody to go out and see the movie and line Lucas' pockets.

"Treasury gave [GM] (and its owners, including the UAW) $18 billion more in assets." Thus a Democratic Administration gave "a massive tax benefit to one of the party's biggest supporters." The other problem is that the move put Ford and GM's other competitors at a disadvantage, as bailouts always do.

196 you know, there's something else to this: You can afford to ignore the negative if you assume *someone else will fix that.* This is the difference between parents and small children. If a kid breaks a window, his mind is off it quickly, except for the lecture he endures. Then he moves on. It's actually the parent who devotes mind-space to the broken window and winds up fixing it.

Look at how modern day collectivists label themselves and their movement:

Liberal - there is nothing liberal about them
Progressive - that's the biggest oxymoron in modern politics
Lean Forward - into the past to re-animate a dead idea?

It's all the Newspeak, the PC, the whole cultural Marxist claptrap. I gives them them the outward structure of self-denial.

241 Hey Amishdude, do you think the rep of mathematicians took a hit because of Hermain Cain's terrible campaign?

Well, first, he isn't a mathematician inasmuch as he never published an original result.  He got a master's in mathematics.  So it was an achievement in problem-solving as opposed to intellectual work.

Second, the problem with a mathematician in politics is that the mathematician has no interest in details which is exactly Cain's main flaw.  To the mathematician, lesser people (physicists, biologists, engineers) focus on details.  The mathematician processes information in order to achieve the greatest abstraction and broadest applicability.

I.e., I know how supply and demand works, I really don't need to know how bond rates effect unemployment.

257 Winter's coming, you say? Bah. Just more of your Jesus-talk. That caption goes nicely with ConservativeMonster's comment on an earlier thread. ****************************** Here's my beef as a socon with your description of #3. Morality is legislated right now, with or without socons. When the gov't says it's okay to murder your unborn baby, that's a moral judgement. When the gov't says it's not okay to murder your unborn baby, that's also a moral judgement. The SoCon position may be a legislated morality, but the non-SoCon position is too. The question is not IF the gov't legislates/pushes morality. The question is WHOSE morality will the gov't legislate? (And yes, as a secular society, that morality should not just be what I like as a Christian, but sometimes what is Good is not Popular) What the Socons are looking for is to push back liberal/leftist morality legislation that has been continuously advanced over the past decades. Those who tell SoCons to shut up are endorsing the status quo of liberal/leftist morality as protected and enforced by law. From a socon perspective, you're surrendering to the liberal agenda, you've only set it up so that it blows up after you're dead and gone. Do you seriously think that "fiscally liberal" legislation that penalizes hard workers and gives welfare to deadbeats has no moral component to it? Posted by: ConservativeMonster at February 29, 2012 12:59 PM (v3pYe) ********************************* Now here is how Democrats win. They've turned the word "morality" into a dirty word. It's always a War of Semantics with them. That is why the word abortion has morphed into-"Pro-Choice".

You could be more of a man dancing on ATC's strap-on than bflagrante delicto popping a baby-cap in that Georgetown claimant. Retain more personal integrity, too, and I for one would feel less "used." It's the lube.

And that's even without the island.

Here's an example for you...my libtard brother outright REFUSES to believe that the story about the Muslim judge in PA is true*. Since the media is pretty much embargo-ing the story, he won't take any other source as proof.  It's another vast right-wing conspiracy to discredit Muslims and justify our "absurd" anti-Sharia laws.

It's sad and sick.

274 274 My guess is that conservatives are happier _because_ they plan for the worst (and thus aren't _constantly_ slapped up alongside the head by what should have been forseeable consequences). Posted by: Polliwog at February 29, 2012 02:21 PM (zmm1+) . Exactly. When someone calls me a pessimist, I reply that I am merely positioning myself to be pleasantly surprized by any possible upside. Posted by: Vashta Nerada at February 29, 2012 02:36 PM (NJs1e) I think it is also because conservatives see their unhappiness as their own doing. There are things that I am unhappy about, but all of the things that I am unhappy about, especially the biggest ones, are my fault. I made the choices and I am able and responsible for fixing them. none of them are someone else's fault, responsibility, or in their power to correct.

285 Wow.... ontherocks listened to it. Not to be super negative but I think the plan is too fully socialize medicine. The Democrat argument will be-that it doesn't make sense for the government to essentially run two systems and the military gets dumped into the "charitable"-( those "idiots" who didn't plan and insure pile)-or we all get dumped into a Canadian like system. Not too get too negative but that might be the ultimate goal. Looks like they are setting up the environment for that argument.

I think liberals subscribe to the logical fallacy of appealing to the consequences of a belief, aka wishful thinking (of either polarity). Their policy proposals must work, otherwise bad things will happen. Therefore they will work. That sort of thing.

Hey, world famous atheist Richard Dawkins can't prove God doesn't exist.  Not that that's then going to cause him to reexamine any of his other assumptions mind you....

...and at least he has a first-rate mind.  So I don't hold out any hope that any lib, confronted by any evidence whatsoever, will ever reexamine his/her beliefs.

It's baked into the cake.  To backtrack would be a denial of self.  Somehow though, a lot of conservatives came to the fold after examining their liberal beliefs and finding them wanting.

Therefore I postulate that those who are still liberals are simply so weak-willed they cannot stand anything which challenges their beliefs.

Makes about as much sense as the shit they're shoveling these days.

Oh Lord, how I've faced this one for years...

I call the conservative view of life 'pragmatic'.  It's not negative, but rather it's a view that takes both the positive and negative implications into play before making a decision.  Oftentimes, people will say that you are "not a team player" or that you have a "negative attitude" when in reality you are simply trying to make sure that everyone has as much information as possible in front of them before making a decision.

So color me conservative.

Posted by: Uncle Jefe at February 29, 2012 02:02 PM (+3fAP)

310 As the study suggests, liberals avert their eyes from hard truths and uncomfortable realities.  Meanwhile, they see all of the negatives, no matter how miniscule, in things like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

Conservatives tend to confront the truths that liberals avoid, while celebrating the beauty and genius of our founding fathers.

Conservatives, otherwise known as rational beings, prepare for the future.  Liberals get high and assume the government will take care of it.

Posted by: Great Reagan's Ghost at February 29, 2012 04:48 PM (dHdwB)

311 Of course a liberal that studiously avoids unpleasantness like the bloody wound image of the test is going to get testy when life doesn't exclusively provide bunnies and beach balls. They relish happiness, but their vision of it is of a state so purified and perpetual that almost any worldly version of happiness pales in comparison. And that makes them pissed. Whereas the conservative generally accepts that the world is unfair, and moreover understands that it's logistically impossible for it to be perfectly "fair". And therefore not repeatedly irritated by the demonstrations of its shortcomings.

Posted by: sistrum at February 29, 2012 08:10 PM (AyryN)

You could say the same thing about Mittwits.  Of course, it depends on how you define "Conservative".

And I look forward to reading the begging for "actual" Conservative votes from Romniacs, much like the grasshopper begged at the ant's door.

The best strategy for "actual" Conservatives at this point is to get as many elected to Congress as the Obama Justice Department allows.  The WH is already lost to Obaromney.

Posted by: Born Free at February 29, 2012 11:36 PM (cnH1l)
