In an Administration of Lying Incompetents, Jay Carney Manages to Distinguish Himself Yet Again
— Ace

Baghdad Bob just emailed me to say "This kid has chops."

Confronted with the newly-released emails in which White House National Defense Fixer Ben Rhodes stated the most important goal (following reassuring the public that the president was devoted to protecting the American people and fundraising in Las Vegas) was...

To underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.

...Jay Carney insists that that goal refers to the protests in Cairo, not Benghazi. Or, as Carney says, it was about "the overall environment in the Muslim world."

Of course, there's also this quote from the Talking Points Q & A:

Q: What's your response to the Independent story [they mean the UK newspaper the Independent -- ace] that says we have intelligence 48 hours in advance of the Benghazi attack that was ignored? Was this an intelligence failure?
We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent. The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the US consulate and subsequently its annex.

Karl points out that Carney has repeatedly insisted from the White House spokesman podium that these claims came from the CIA, not the White House.

I don't understand Carney's response to this. He only says, basically, this has all been answered before.

He has no answer as to why the White House held this email back.

The White House's claim has been (for eighteen long months of lies) that whatever misrepresentations entered the talking points, and whatever truths departed from them (such as evidence that this was an Al Qaeda attack, that there had been previous attacks, that there had been previous warnings, etc.), it had nothing to do with the White House, as other people, not anyone in the White House, constructed the talking points.

Now comes this email from Ben Rhodes telling Ambassador Rice to go out there and sell the Internet Video cover story and so what does Jay Carney do?

He claims the talking points weren't about Benghazi.

Exit Quote: "If you look at the document in question, it is not about Benghazi."

Second Exit Quote: "The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the US consulate and subsequently its annex."

Third Exit Quote: After a year and a half of vigorously insisting the White House had no input into these Talking Points -- that all information came from the CIA and FBI -- Carney now says "obviously" the White House had input into the Talking Points.

Fourth Exit Quote:

18 so the point is that Carney is full pf crap? This is news? "He only says, basically, this has all been answered before." Ah yes, the Clinton hide the decline trick: lie, and when you get caught and are asked again, say "we already answered that." There is this similarity, too: Clinton in 1992 said he would have the most ethical government in US history and didn't Obama say he would have the most open government in US history? Birds of a feather, you don't want to be right below them when the truth comes out.

45 Okay, one expects the White House to lie on this. One expects the White House spox to lie on this. Yes, that's a problem, but that's not really the biggest problem here. The biggest problem is that for 18 months the MFM pretended like they believed the WH- and even now when it's so blatantly proven that the WH was lying that the MFM *can't* cover it up- they're still pretending to take Jay Carney seriously. Reporters should be calling him a liar to his face. A truly non-partisan media would be.

99 "Imagine the following scenario. The end of civilization has occurred, zombies have taken over the Earth and all access to modern technology has ended. The few survivors suddenly need to know the value of pi and, being a mathematician, they turn to you. What do you do? According to a couple of Canadian mathematicians, the answer is to repeatedly fire a Mossberg 500 pump action shotgun at a square aluminum target about 20 meters away. Then imagine that the square is inscribed with an arc drawn between opposite corners that maps out a quarter circle. If the sides of the square are equal to 1, then the area of the quarter circle is pi/4. Next, count the number of pellet holes that fall inside the area of the quarter circle as well as the total number of holes. The ratio between these is an estimate of the ratio between the area of the quarter circle and the area of a square, or in other words pi/4. So multiplying this number by 4 will give you an estimate of pi. That's a process known as a Monte Carlo approximation and it is complicated by factors such as the distribution of the pellets not being random. But the mathematicians show how to handle these too. The result? According to this method, pi is 3.13, which is just 0.33 per cent off the true value. Handy if you find yourself in a post-apocalyptic world."

Let's get one thing straight:  President Obama will not be impeached no matter how illegal the act(s) he has committed, lies he has told, or how many people have or will die or suffer personal and/or professional ruin as the direct result of his decisions and directives.  That little hill of heaped corpses Obama has made can pile  up as high as a mountaintop and he will suffer no negative consequences, ever.  That's just the way it is and we all know why: because the first Black president cannot be seen as a cataclysmic failure, the most pernicious president since Buchanan, the most unqualified since Harding, the most incompetent since Carter.

This and the lack of a single positive accomplishment as Secretary of State will come up in debates if she does run.   No moderator can prevent that from happening.  Her only response will be that she flew a gazillion miles.

Congress needs to start jailing some people or this ignoring of the law will just continue. No one asked *why* emails that only discussed talking points were classified. When Carney insists that the talking points were about middle-east unrest in general, and not about Benghazi specifically, no one asks him why, then, everyone in the administration previously *insisted* that the video was the cause of Benghazi. No one asks him *why* if the talking points were not about Benghazi, then why was it classified. Etc., etc. Carney spends the entire time conflating and deflecting.

520 One of President Obama’s closest advisers doesn’t want to talk about her secret meetings with wealthy liberal donors this week. White House aide Valerie Jarrett attended this week’s meeting in Chicago of the Democracy Alliance of super rich, liberal donors. But when a reporter for Politico approached Jarrett at the conference and asked her if Democrats were being hypocritical by raising money from wealthy liberals while slamming conservative donors as part of their 2014 election strategy, the aide refused to talk. Ken Vogel of Politico wrote Wednesday: “Democratic attacks on the Koch brothers for secretive campaign spending have become a virtual plank in the party’s platform, but it turns out big-money liberals can be just as defensive when their own closed-door activities are put in the spotlight.” Vogel reported that, “Jarrett refused to make eye contact” when he approached her at the conference at the Ritz Carlton and attempted to ask her questions. 564 WHY were these allegedly meaningless emails classified then. Why were they never released to Congress? Anybody ask that? Posted by: Thunderb The emails were unclassified and then when the House asked for them they were reclassified. The WH was sued and had to release them under FOIA. Interestingly, a JW person said that Carney was CC'd on the cover story email. He wasn't just 'following orders', he was a principle in the cover-up. And yet he is the one answering questions for the press.

578 Reading a very interesting book by ex CIA security/polygraph agents titled "Spy the Lie" and Jay Carney has every "tell" in the book. Some of the ones not as intuitively obvious as others are attacking the questioner, and "referral" statements (in which Jay indulges quite a bit) e.g. "as I've mentioned in my prior briefings..." or "If you'd attended the Conference on Friday...") This last verbal tic of The Carney qualifies as both attacking the questioner and deceptive "referral" statement, and is basically his signature preface to any answer to a tough question. He also, often, displays "inappropriate" and "discordant" body language and emotional responses to the questions (e.g. inappropriately smiling/smirking to a serious question). There is no magic formula, but the guy is a walking case study in the tics and tactics of a LIAH! His boss is in another catagory. Probably too much of a narcissist/sociopath to fall into conventional markers of stress and evasion --but you knew that.

580 Ok it was an election year so it was ok by everyone in the media that Obama told lies about Obamacare (you can keep your doctor and your plan and your premiums will decrease) and now it's ok that there was an orchestrated lie about what happened in Benghazi. In other words, it really doesn't matter WHAT he said to get re-elected. It just had to get done, no matter what.

Pointless I know, but imagine - try to imagine - the unbelievable supernova of hysteria and outrage and 24/7 "coverage" if anything - anything - approaching this sort of disastrous incompetence with a body count accompanied by brazen lies and bizarre indefensible actions (perp-walking the video producer with the media there so that the Muslim world could see it on their "news") occurring in the Bush years.

And, of course, such hysteria and outrage would be perfectly appropriate.  This package of disaster and mendacity has no analogues I can think of in post-war US history (I'm thinking specific contained incidents, not big policies stretching over years).

But in the Bush years, we had nearly a 24/7 maelstrom of hysteria, outrage, and calumnies against the country and the leadership based on ..... absolutely nothing.

So effective was this tsunami of lies and distortion that a significant portion of the morons here - including some of the more substantive ones - actually swallowed this poison and can be seen regurgitating it here on occasion.

There is no hope.  Just a few weeks ago, while in my normal don't-discuss-any-public policy-topic-especially-those-in-which-I-actually-have-a-lifetime's-experience mode, at a dinner party, the host (a good guy, but a classic victim of the ocean of misinformation the American public square has become) broached Benghazi, to say something about the NYT article that claimed AQ was not involved.

(deep, kiloton-force facepalm) The article was debunked by the NYT itself within the month, of course, but in any case the point he made was not just obviously false, but irrelevant.  As if AQ involvement was a key matter.  But of course I had to mumble/deflect somehow, can't recall what I said.   To even attempt a rescue of this guy, by educating him on even the basics of the real world, as opposed to his make-believe NYT/NPR/pop culture world, is far beyond the scope our friendship.  And his wife is worse.
