Hmmm: Number of Young Voters Saying They'll "Definitely" Vote In This Election Plummets
— Ace

Su Abuela no es buena.

In 2008, 74% said they'd definitely vote. (Note this doesn't mean they did vote, but the first prerequisite to bothering to cast a vote is having a definite intent to vote.)

In 2012, Hope and Change dropped that number to 58%. Thanks, Obama!

But in 2016, in fell even further to 47%.

Note that this demographic despises Trump -- and would produce a lot of votes if they were animated to vote for Su Abuela.

But it seems they're not.

There's more interesting stuff in the link -- there is, in fact, a universe of non-college educated white voters who usually don't vote who could swamp Su Abuela at the polls if they turned out.

And some of these infrequent voters -- likely Trump voters, mostly -- are finally registering to vote.

But most aren't.

Trump's cheapskate/can't be bothered approach to registration and GOTV operations could wind up being his downfall.

Well, there are fifty nine things that could wind up being his downfall. But this seems to be the easiest to fix and thus the most difficult to excuse.

5 Young voters typically do not vote in numbers.  And they will not this time either.  Democrat turnout this year will be low.  But as I keep pumping that call, it will all depend on those 10 or 12 battleground States.  Blacks will not turnout for Scankles, but they sure as hell will vote 8 or 10 times when they do.

But I think there may be a bigger issue: People who have decided "I'm not voting for either," but now that election day is nearer, they can't figure out whether to stay home in protest or actually hold their noses and vote for one or the other. But this seems to be the easiest to fix and thus the most difficult to excuse. Yup. There really is no excuse for this. Oh oh oh! Yard sign updates! I am a huge fan of campaign ephemera and thus the majority of my interest in yard signs is due to being interested in design choices. The nicest ones and the most interesting ones around me are both for county commissioner. Different people running but both for county commissioner. That is meaningless except for the fact that people forget how important local elections are. Now that I think about it, this is the first Presidential campaign I've seen that is half as vicious as a school board race.

30 Call Trump a cheapskate, whatever. He has a huge opening to point out he's not taking hedge fund money, unlike Cankles. The RNC can and has registered quite a few new voters. Remember, people were talking Trump's non existent ground game to death in the primaries too. There is a reason: try to depress turnout by saying "yeah, he has no idea how to win."

41 FWIW, I recently moved and took the time to registger in my new place on my own. I have received NUMEROUS emails, calls, even texts from the RNC to make sure I'm registered to vote. They even provide a link to you to input your name and address and you instantly get back that you are registered. (In the case of my wife, she wasn't, but we quickly got her registered.) Sponge is right; it's the RNC's job, and if my experience is typical, they are doing it. Read Salena Zito's articles about the registration drives in upstate PA. It's happening; I don't know the source of these "stories" saying that it's not happening. NeverTrumpers should be GLAD that it's the RNC doing it, NOT the Trump campaign. Those same people will be encouraged to vote down ballot as well.

He certainly has people in his camp that should know this. Even Rove is a handy tool for advice. Newt? Anybody? He can't save money for ad campaigns without major GOTV funding in parallel. 115 Ace... with all due respect, the daily venomous screeds of reverse-blue collar snobbery directed at college-educated republicans is getting old. As though the only reason to mourn the candidacy of Donald Trump is because we're pretentious country clubbers offended that Rodney Dangerfield has just moved in. Trump would be fine if he could just set his own ego aside for 15 minutes, exercise a little humility, not get distracted by silly personal spats with non-entities, and - just once in a while - think before he opens his mouth. But he can't, 'cause he's Trump. Or he won't because he just doesn't think he should have to. It has NOTHING to do with some kind of false class snobbery. It's that he's an unserious clown who is shooting his own dick off and throwing away a winnable election against the most loathesome Democrat candidate in history. And yes, even with my lofty bachelors degree, I'm still voting for him. God, some of y'all are like a prom date who can't figure out why he's not getting any after he borrowed his dates' mother's steak knife to clean his toenails in the living room before the big dance*. There are things when running you just do because it makes an easier path to victory. Organization, maybe handing your twitter over to a campaign staff member so you can discuss what goes up before you post it is another. This is a winnable election against an awful candidate. I personally think being "close" is a poor showing - he should be up comfortably, but he can't stop getting stirred into the shit. There are easy outs for him in every manufactured attempt to drag him down, it shouldn't be too hard, especially for someone who people claim plays the media game well.

157 this was all I could find on the RNC GOTV, from a month ago or so

"to give you a number: The number of house meetings that we've done cycle-to-date is 4,018. And our average attendance at these house parties is 15. So that's 60,270 that have attended an actual house meeting and learned how to help organize their turf. Aside: Carr's team provided numbers on the size of its staff: "In the 11 battleground states there are 3,861 paid staff and trained organizers. Across 33 states there are more than 6,000 paid staff and trained organizers."
http://tinyurl.com/z5lcfv5

They redesigned themselves toward a "community organizer" type setup, fewer offices.  I don't know if those are good numbers ... but the RNC and Priebus run it ... no idea what part Trump is supposed to be playing, other than running his own campaign and directing people to Priebus.

190 This "few young people are inspired to vote" statistic is very interesting because it completely undermines the rationale for the Left's endless pushing of slanted polls. Let me explain. The presumption that "Everyone wants to be on the winning wide" underlies 3/4 of what the Left does on a daily basis -- trying to present themselves, and their narrative, and their candidates, as "winning" and "dominant" and "popular" and "in the lead." They think that if the general public accepts this as fact, then the general public will jump on board "because that's what everyone is doing." But there's actually no proof that this assumption about mass psychology is true. It's just a theory that every strategist operates by without really questioning whether or not it's a valid theory. It's almost impossible test in the real world, because history only happens once, and you can't rewind it and say, "OK, not let's see what would have happened in 2016 if we HADN'T pimped Hillary's inflated poll numbers." Opposing this assumption is a different theory, one that I ascribe to -- the "Complacency Theory." Which, as its title reveals, goes like this: Most people are unenthused and indifferent to politics and current events. They only get involved if they think their presence is necessary or would make a difference. So if you said to the average person, "A terrifying neo-Hitler is running for president -- but don't worry, he's getting crushed in the polls, so he has no real chance of winning," then that would DECREASE the likelihood that the person would vote against the neo-Hitler -- because the voter will just assume that the threat is "taken care of" and his participation is irrelevant. But if you said, "A terrifying neo-Hitler is running for president -- and OMG he's ahead in the polls and without your vote a disaster could happen!", then that is what would inspire the otherwise-disengaged voter to go to the ballot box. But Team Democrat is always pursuing to first option -- portraying trump as a doomed loser. And if yo combine that strategy with this high-level-of-disengagement among younger voters, the Dems are actually shooting themselves in the foot and depressing their own base whenever they hype Hillary inflated poll numbers (whether or not the polls are even accurate).

216 Actually, voter registration is THE primary function of parties. Spent a chunk of my early 20s sitting in malls and going door to door to get folks to register. It's thankless, hard work that needs planning and resources but good local organizations get it done. Intelligent candidates help raise and spend money, ask their volunteers to help and ensure the party gets off it's behind and does it, but it really is a party function. Now, should Trump should have capitalized on the fact non-voters want to vote for him, and forced the GOP to target these folks? Of course. That's why having a self involved narcissist as your candidate sucks. I actually am sort of expecting some portion of this "never voter" crowd, who don't understand they have to register, to just show up election day and get furious and complain "the system is rigged" if they aren't allowed to vote. Will the Dems support same day voting if it's these non-college educated whites who start using it? (Haha, rhetorical question.)

And I'm from New Yawk, which means I'm very passionate. Passionate about this country and it's people--people who I love. I'm passionate about helping people become the best they can be; passionate about making America better. Passionate about making America Stronger; Passionate about making America Great again....." Or something like this. Answer the charge that he says dumb things sometimes by turning it into a positive by saying he's passionate. It might make him seem REAL. Something Hillary can never be. I don't know.

244 Preibus laid out his plans for GOTV to Trump at the convention. Trump liked it and agreed to it, that's why Priebus is still chairman. The money bomb in July raised $80M, half went to the RNC for GOTV. Posted by: Make America Great Again That's encouraging, I guess Trump has certain skills, but running an organization like a campaign is not one of them in my opinion. I loathe the Bush family and Karl Rove, but he did for the most part do an excellent job with campaigns. If you had a guy like that in Trump's corner, I think you would see the polls swamped with new voters.

249 Let it burn, he said. As the comedian Will Rogers said, "The whole country is with him. If he burned down the Capitol, we would cheer and say, 'well we at least got a fire started anyhow.'" Shlaes, Amity. The Forgotten Man (p. 150). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition. Trump? Hillary? Obama? No, Rogers was talking about FDR.

250 Let me run this by you. What if at the next debate Trump breaks character like I saw Gleason do once on The Honeymooners, looks directly at the camera and says something along the lines of "Look. A lot has been written about me being bombastic and saying things in the heat of the moment, and that's true. But I'm not a polished politician used to speaking the usual politician blather. Posted by: JoeF. at September 30, 2016 04:01 PM (AIf5d) good I would go with, right at the start: "Hillary will probably try to throw mud at me again during this debate, because that is all she's got. She can't run on her record or her ideas. So expect it. Rather than respond, I will continue to talk to you, the American people, of what really matters to you..." and does what he says he will do ignore the moderators ignore Illary. Speak to the voters.

252 Then if the RNC is handling the GOTV (and judging from the mail I get they are) why would Trump try to duplicate that? Posted by: *Mikey NTH - M.A.G.A. Because a GOTV effort is usually better than no GOTV effort. I still remember Trump after losing Iowa saying he didn't know what a ground game even was. I can excuse Trump for being an outsider, but at some point he needs to learn the mechanics of elections. He's not getting a do over after November.

253 "theres another video over at YouTube that seems to show a lighted screen on the top of her podium.... not his... which goes off right after the debate ends."
DonQ

yeah that is certainly unexplained, and Lou Dobbs asked about it.  Rush brought it up the other day too, but didn't get into it.

They removed something that seemed important, a larger sized device, not just notes, and a later guy cleans out maybe just water bottles or something else.  But the old guy was secretive, and Bill and Hill were "in on it", whispers going around ... seemed they definitely wanted to secret that device out.

And the light bar on her podium turned off by some remote person.  iirc Trump's podium didn't have that.  Could easily have been for a scrolling script, to prompt on what to bring up.  Or just a light for notes, but why have it turn off via remote?

258 Posted by: Maritime at September 30, 2016 04:09 PM (HLUPe) Okay - that sailed right past me. If there is already a party GOTV effort set up and running, why would a campaign try to duplicate that effort? You would be competing for the same volunteers and contacting the same people. It would be wasting resources.

Posted by: *Mikey NTH - M.A.G.A. Lace Helicopter Wigs are at The Outrage Outlet! at September 30, 2016 11:12 AM (hLRSq)

259 Trump will send you to the state Repub party, which is the middle man. Trump handed over his donor list and volunteer list to the RNC. The operative I talk to says people are coming out all over the place. The only hick up I see is the county party level, maybe that's just my area.

260 Remember all the money Romney spent on his GOTV plan? Man those people turned out, or something! The Democrats on the other hand GOTV by using spiritualists...maybe Trump should try the method.

263 "Trump's microphone issues appear only to have affected the sound in the Hofstra University debate hall, however, and not the record-setting audience watching at home."

That can be true if and only if there were separate mics for the in house and TV audience. If  there was only one mic and the mic was the problem, then if one was affected, both would be.

264 190 But Team Democrat is always pursuing to first option -- portraying trump as a doomed loser. And if yo combine that strategy with this high-level-of-disengagement among younger voters, the Dems are actually shooting themselves in the foot and depressing their own base whenever they hype Hillary inflated poll numbers (whether or not the polls are even accurate). Posted by: zombie at September 30, 2016 03:54 PM (jBuUi) Actually, I'm worried about something else: If the polls all show Trump losing and he wins, the Democrats can start screaming "stolen election". And the BLM crowd can take it to the streets. Projection is what the Left does, after all.

266 On the microphone thing, initially I was listening in the car and it was very annoying. Trump would speak for a little while without taking a breath, and then inhale. The inhale was amplified and sounded horrible. No sniffles or anything that I could tell. When I got home and watched the rest on TV, it wasn't as pronounced and I thought maybe it sounded like sniffles. Bottom line, yeah, they dorked him.

268 Yep since Trump won the nomination and I resigned myself to voting for him (or more precisely, against Hillary) his insistence on trying to win on the cheap has been the most infuriating thing about him. The guy could liquidate 10% of his net worth and have a state of the art GOTV apparatus but he's a fucking miser.

270 @217 A bunch of states have same day registration. Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Washington DC. So in those states, people can show up to vote and register the same day. There's also provisional ballots available as well. I don't know what "the right kind of GOTV" looks like to the people criticizing. It's voting. Trump is guaranteed about 55m votes, maybe the 60ish million of Romney and McCain. The rest are not going to be that hard to get. Dem crossovers, independents who vote frequently in local elections, but skipped the last Presidential election or two, new voters. There's a lot of voters who already know how to get to where the voting place is that Trump can gain through campaigning. Trump isn't trying to corral a pool of inner city "voters" via urban machines. It's not really the same at all.
