Hillary's Emails Hosted on Same Server as Clinton Foundation Emails?
— Ace

I don't really know how this works so I'll just go "hmmm" after everything to seem like I'm Informed and Engaged.

HillaryÂ’s clintonemail.com server and the Foundation-run presidentclinton.com email server have exactly the same IP address, and the same SSL certificate (which an organization purchases for an email server to verify its trustworthiness).

mail.clintonemail.com and mail.presidentclinton.com both have an IP address of 64.94.172.146, according to an SSL Certificate Checker.

Hmmmm...

...

The fact that both of these email servers have the same IP address means that they were operating on the same network, and sharing physical space. A computer expert tells Breitbart News that the servers were probably operating on the same machine. It is also possible that they were operating on different machines on the same network, which still means that the machines would have to be close enough to exist in the same physical location.

...

Hmmmm....

People are speculating (not in that Breitbart article) that it seems possible that a hacker could hack a lower-security email account on the Clinton Foundation system and then use that exploit* to hack Hillary's email.

* I hear hackers using this word and always wanted to use it. I have no idea if anything I said makes sense.

5 In reference to the sidebar article about conservative judges going after the new deal - on of the key reasons for the failure of the right to stop the country's hard tack left in recent years is that conservative judges have utterly failed us by refusing to meet the left's fire with fire. If the left can invent rights to gay marriage and abortion, it would be trivial to argue that differing tax rates, for example, are unconstitutional. The 16th amendment gave the government the right to tax income, but it doesn't actually give them the rate to take *different* amounts from different people...

6 Well, that could be the case. Or both IPs could forward to somewhere else and the SSL certs could be on the primary domain. But yeah, occams razor would say they were probably running both email servers on the same network (and/or same box)

7 I'll believe the right people (read, the voters) care when Hillary is actually being cuffed and frog-marched out (and Obama with her).  I still think this is a tap on the shoulder from Iranian Rat Jarrett telling Sir Edmund to drop out.

What I DON'T understand is why Bill isn't making the Obama people suffer equally.  I refuse to believe the Chicago Thug-Machine has more juice than the Clinton Crime Syndicate.

25 Also suggests that the classified emails were on the same system/network that the Foundation stuff was on. Sounds like more people had access to the classified data than first thought. Which also makes it reasonable to conduct discovery against more systems, since they were tied.

26 Not necessarily. The external facing IP will be the same for any machine on that network. How would you distinguish one from another, or how would the gateway router know who to send it to? A NATp will let multiple servers call out, but each socket in is only going to one place.

I read the article, like many articles, it doesn't sound like they know an MX record from an A record for the web server. They don't have to point at the same address and if they are parking the domain A record somewhere it could be the same for both domains while the MX records point at separate servers.

Join your phone and desktop to your wifi then check your IP on both devices with a public IP checker. Both will show the same. Your router will assign them different local IPs (192.168.1.whatever usually for home networks), but to the internet they have the same IP. The device connected to the internet is your router, not your computer (if that makes sense)

37 Could have just been the central smtp filtering box, it's not even remotely uncommon to have hundreds if not 10's of thousands of MX records to point to the same ip for front line filtering\spam detection\routing, it doesn't mean that's where they are ultimately ending up being directed. Now that said, yes if you get something on that central filtering box you can sniff the traffic\messages even before the recipient knows they've "got mail". Also the Clinton's certainly didn't have a real enterprise setup, let alone one set up to take classified or sensitive info even remotely into account so the article is likely right.

38 Posted by: DanInMN at August 31, 2015 06:57 PM (15ZVX) Or they could be running everything through that IP for some other reason. Essentially running VPNs with one central data center with that public-facing IP being their gateway. They could be doing that for ease of management. Who knows?

Posted by: ThisBeingMilt at August 31, 2015 02:01 PM (MbrzC)

40 If they were not running on the same machine, there is a major security problem given the certificate for both domains points to one IP. This could be a proxy server, but I seriously doubt it (and email headers would reveal this quickly - is this why Hillary printed emails rather than provide the actual email data?) Let's say we set up a mail proxy at the same IP for both domains, and have separate servers inside on the LAN. If we point the SSL cert to the proxy server so we get the same IP on both, then the proxy has to have the certs installed and decrypts the SSL there. This leaves the email unencrypted as it comes into the servers on the LAN. It's possible you could re-encrypt using private certs at that point, but that's just stupid and causes other security problems. The conclusion is that if these aren't the same server, then they seriously screwed up security and left email communications wide open for anyone who compromises anything on the inside of that LAN. Any competent APT (advanced persistent threat) actor from China, Iran, Russia, North Korea, etc. would have little trouble accomplishing that on the grade of technology these clowns were using. My assessment is that it's the same server. The email headers would give that away. Where the hell is the IG and the FBI in demanding the email owned by the State Department be handed over or Hillary be prosecuted for theft (and then everything else)? Printed copies are NOT the email intellectual property. She's destroyed header information and other meta-data that is State Department property. She was required by law to hand over their property, not metaphorically to take a picture of it and give them the picture.

41 OK let's allow the absurd notion that Hillary didn't *intend* to have classified info show up on her server. Even if there's no intent, doesn't gross negligence come into play? I don't buy that argument, and here's why: As SecState, you will receive classified info. It's a certainty. When Hilly set up her server as the only possible way to reach her via email, she guaranteed illegal receipt of classified info. There's no way around it. She had no legal and legitimate method to receive that info.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 31, 2015 06:57 PM (rwI+c) You can't distinguish one server from another from the internet. At a home level, your router does that for you. At the enterprise level, they'll either have a physical appliance or (less typical) a server that routes that data for you to different local IPs on the network.

Correction, the article does reference "mail.clintonemail.com" so they are at least trying to get the MX records. Their source, DNSHistory.org doesn't specify if that is actually the MX or not (at first glance, anyway.) It might be the Outlook Web Access entry (since it was confirmed that this is Exchange they were using.)

Posted by: DanInMN at August 31, 2015 02:02 PM (15ZVX)

44 I don't know why that would be the case. Any exchange admins on here able to decipher that? Posted by: mynewhandle at August 31, 2015 06:52 PM (AkOaV) It wouldn't IMO.... Its just a separate address space on the same server. Now both 'could' be pointed at a mail gateway, which would send the mail to separate servers... but why do what with the very small number of addresses we are talking about... Best SWAG? (scientific wild ass guess, as an MSCE who used to TEACH Exchange?)... Single server... multiple address spaces.. But putting other peoples email on there would not make it any LESS ... nor more... secure.... You'd still have to hack either her mail box, or the server itself (not hard) to get access to her mail... BUT... when you back up the server, you back up the entire Mail Store.... sooooo... that media most probably has both Clinton foundation stuff, AND State Dept. stuff on it...

That being said, we know Hillary was not following best practices with any of her IT shit, so who knows what they were doing.

51 Thats what I find so loathsome about the Clintons: back when Bill got his rocks off in the Oval Office and the Clinton machine went into spin mode to save his presidency, they tried to appeal to peoples respect for privacy. They faked outrage that anyone would dare intrude upon something as private as a persons sex-life, when in truth it was Clinton who dragged his sex-life into a place that is supposed to be one of the most public spaces in the country. The felons wife does something similar with her e-mails and even dares to reprimand Ed Henry because her "personal e-mails are personal", after she mixed up public and personal business herself. The Clintons embody King Louis XIV "l'etate c'est moi" perfectly: they are absolutists. There is in their eyes no distinction between Clinton business and public business and any appeal to that distinction, always in the name of privacy or personal space, is only a tool to control and limit the publics access to information from this huge mixed up mess.

And they have to be updated yearly, for a fee of course.

72 dnshistory.org doesn't show any MX record history for mail.presidentclinton.com nor presidentclinton.com. It shows 2014 and newer history for clintonemail.com but nothing from the relevant time period. My guess is that MX records weren't cached for the time period in question. Nor does it have any indication that smtp.clintonemail.com or smtp.presidentclinton.com ever existed. In short, all they have are some A records which don't really tell us anything about mail flow. They might have been used for mail *retrieval* though.

Posted by: mynewhandle at August 31, 2015 02:11 PM (AkOaV)

75 They wouldn't. Every machine on the network will show the same IP address from the outside looking in. (if that makes sense) But not for the same port. Only one machine can be the port25 socket @ a given address. If that wasn't true you couldn't route anything with any predictability.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 31, 2015 02:12 PM (rwI+c)

76 It's not the router, it's the smtp host that's doing the filtering routing of the messages based on the message headers (and if spam filtering the content) and x-headers that's sitting behind it. Posted by: ThisBeingMilt at August 31, 2015 07:06 PM (MbrzC) IF this was Exchange.... as we've been told... I really really doubt there would be an SMTP host... it can be done.... but its a VERY expensive solution (you would need an entire extra couple of servers and exchange licenses for the extra boxes, which would be cost prohibitive for the very small number of mailboxes we are talking about)....

Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 31, 2015 07:12 PM (rwI+c) Oh, I get what you're saying. I must have misunderstood your original comment. Yes, that would be apparent from the metadata. The actual public facing IP address that hosted clintonmail.com doesn't tell us where the server was located though. but if we could see how the mail was routed then we'd know very quickly. Unfortunately the only emails that we know for sure exist were printed on paper before given to state, so no metadata there. Maybe the lawyers thumbdrive, although who knows

85 mynewhandle: You're confusing NAT, PAT and a few other protocols. Traffic headed outbound from your PC and phone, per your example, will be NATted and share the public IP. For the Clinton mail servers, its a totally separate situation. We have a session layer protocol (SSL) that has some specificity of a single IP, and application protocols like SMTP that have certain requirements. Having built load balancers and inbound proxies for a global financial processor, I've had to work with the trickery around SSL and multiple actual web servers behind. To accomplish this for the email servers, we'd have to do the following: SSL CERT: Points to a single IP for both domains. Either this is the same server, or its a load balancer/proxy/some device to receive the SSL session that is transmitting SMTP messages of email. This device gets a copy of both domain-name emails (presuming multiple mail servers behind). It negotiates SSL, but this becomes the endpoint for the public certificate as it resides on this device and cannot also reside inside. This means the emails now are unencrypted inside the proxy and the shared memory of the server has both domains in cleartext inside the OS. This device is now susceptible to leakage of the content if it is compromised and given it's on a public IP, this makes it a target. Now what happens when the proxy turns around and re-delivers the email to either the foundation server or the hillary server? Most likely, it would relay unencrypted, leaving the content unsecured on the LAN wire. It is possible a private certificate might have been used to re-SSL the message but this leaves us with a slew of security vulnerabilities. Remember how Lenova recently got embarrassed by the spyware software firm that did exactly this inside your Lenova laptop? You thought you had SSL from the remote web server to your browser, but this little spyware app did a man-in-the-middle attack on you and read all your content you thought was secure via SSL. So it is possible private certs were used on the interior but if someone is so stupid so as to shove a proxy upstream and park the SSL there, they don't know what they're doing and are likely to have screwed up the LAN side as well. Either way, if there was a private cert or the relay email from the proxy was in cleartext, it was vulnerable and placed in cleartext, co-mingled between both domains on the proxy. Another alternative is to have a missing third email server handling all of this for both domains (and maybe others), and then that server did a relay to the internal domains. I suspect this would be the most likely configuration. The Clintons probably had lots of special purpose domains and destroyed them like Tony Soprano gets rid of a gun when the "mission" is finished. We've heard references to "another server" and this would probably be it. Certs would have to park on this single IP as it's the public Internet mail transport endpoint, but then it forwards on into the specialized domain-specific mail servers. One could fire up virtual machines for each domain to containerize things and limit the risk from a law enforcement request to provide a server image. Its actually an interesting model in that it'd allow a lot of granular control over just what a server looks like. You can wipe, re-image, and release an empty server, or reset servers at any point, while not losing the configuration of the master server with the certificates, etc. If there is a missing server, I'd suspect the "mutual IP" and "shared IP certificates" just gave it away.

117 BB Wolf @86: Exchange is a product. SMTP is a protocol. I also suspect Exchange was being used at some level from what I've seen, but the Exchange server is speaking SMTP when its receiving emails from the Internet inbound. Also, SMTP isn't expensive per an earlier comment. In fact, it can be far cheaper than Exchange with the Microsoft licensing. Fire up a CentOS or Ubuntu virtual server at Backspace or Atlantic.net, configure up a SMTP server, and for $20/month you've got a mail server. Buy some certs, configure them, etc. Anyway, when I mentioned SMTP, I was referring to the mail protocol that is being spoken between mail servers (e.g. when Huma's husband emailed her from anthony@penisselfie.com and sent huma@hillaryswench.com a reminder that they need to have another social appearance to keep up the "marriage" scheme), it went over SMTP between mail.penisselfie.com and hillaryswench.com

Which is not really useful information. I mean, it might be, but not necessarily. And if all we're seeing is the public IPs, then that tells us nothing about whats sitting behind those routers / web appliances. Point is, it wasn't under the control of the CO company at the time. As far as I can tell. So we don't know who configured this server, to what level of proficiency, and what their orders were. 137 MS Exchange is designed to host different domains at the same IP.  This proves that her SecState mailbox was on a server administrated by the Clinton Foundation.  It's less likely they were on different servers at a location with a shared external WAN IP but possible.  Either way they're at least in the same building.

I can think of only one way the servers could be in different locations (VPN) but even then the mail would be routed through the Foundation's IP whcih is just as bad.

141 @106 Jack Straw: If the certs point to the same IP, that isn't a router. That's something unencrypting the SSL tunnel between endpoints; either a load balancer or a mail server. Plus as another poster has mentioned, both have SMTP inbound on the same port - PAT can't differentiate. It has to go to something speaking SMTP to figure out which domain its going to. It really sounds like the missing email server - a relay server that was fronting the server instances. What a nice way to be able to destroy an instance when you need to, wiping it, and handing over nothing, while retaining full control over the email operations. If I was going to run a criminal enterprise foundation and take hundreds of millions from gulf states to overthrow Libya, Syria, Egypt (attempt), Tunisia, I'd make sure I had a configuration like this one.

145 Spook @ 27: "no wonder the best we could get from Iran was an assfucking. They got dirt on all the political class." Now that's an interesting notion. That would explain a lot. I would imagine that Obama might have just decided to turn the entire Middle East over to Iran, to let them be the region's strong man, so that we can then ignore it. It fits in with his apparent "anti-Zionism" and the mullahs share the same attitude toward the US as Obama. But Obama at his core is a non-ideological Chicago pol; he wouldn't give a plum like this to Iran unless he was getting something, or unless they had something on him. So yeah, I'm buying this. The Iranians blackmailed him into this great deal of his.

146 Posted by: Multitude at August 31, 2015 07:25 PM (c7WnJ) but to retrieve said email from the server... you also have to have POP and IMAP set up.... its not just SMTP. 'Could' you make it work on separate servers? Sure... but as far as the company was concerned, there was no reason to do so... they thought this was a simple contract for a hosting email for a business... not for the government.

147 Posted by: Multitude at August 31, 2015 07:30 PM (c7WnJ) That set up makes more sense to me. And in that case, Hillarys server could be *physically* located anywhere and secure VPN in to the foundations network. Again, most likely both servers shared a box or at least a physical location (or, gulp, were both running from the same exchange server)... but we can't say that for sure, I don't think, with what we know. For all we know, one / both of the servers are actually hosted remotely somewhere and the clintons never had a physical server until they outsourced Hillarys emails to CO for whatever reason.

150 76 - It's not expense (even remotely) to have simple smtp host process crap first and forward to which ever exch box is serving the destination domain, a shitty old box in the corner will do (or small VM sitting on some other system), it doesn't have to have anything to do with Exchange (which yes I know well), just needs to speak smtp. If you're UBS, yes you need an expensive fully redundant system, if your Clinton not so much. -- "But not for the same port. Only one machine can be the port25 socket @ a given address. If that wasn't true you couldn't route anything with any predictability. Posted by: Grump928(C) at August 31, 2015 07:12 PM (rwI+c)" Not really true in the context we're discussing yes but here you talking about sender -> SomeClintonIP:25 -> some smtp host fowarding based on destination -> You have no idea. I used run a systems that had thousands of domains pointed at the same mx records. That frontline "intake" smtp system then passed on the messages post filtering to any number of dozens of other actual mail servers within the enterprise (Exchange and others), or for that matter outside of it. Again the Clintons probably didn't have such a setup but this article isn't proof of anything. Stop making me sound like I'm defending a Clinton!

What a nice way to be able to destroy an instance when you need to, wiping it, and handing over nothing, while retaining full control over the email operations. That sounds nefarious. And very likely considering we are talking about the Clintons. Bottom line is these servers are way more closely connected than the Clintons ever wanted to admit and it stinks of corruption.

153 It makes sense for a government official to have a separate private email account for non-governmental business. It even makes sense to have your own private secure server to run your email through at that level of government and running a multi-billion dollar foundation. The problem is she used it to handle official government business, send and receive classified data, and keep things off the record from the people she's accountable to. Remember the story a few years back that the State Department under Hillary was running black ops, without any authorization or legal power? Guess what handled all the email and info for those....

181 So here's my Clinton Crime Syndicate network design: VMWare Server license, Server hardware from Dell. Guest virtual server instance #1: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (based on the vintage of this project). Exchange Server. Running at 24.187.234.187. Certificates registered and domains configured for clintonemail.com, and presidentclinton.com. This becomes the email-gateway handler and control point for the various email schemes. Guest virtual server instance #2: clintonemail.com Exchange / Windows 2003 host. Uses VMWare NT on a private virtual network to relay from server #1 to this instance. No need to worry about private certificates since this private LAN between servers is inside the private cloud, right? (Actually, any compromised server inside the vmware architecture can spy on the virtual wire) Guest virtual server instance #3: presidentclinton.com Exchange/Windows 2003. Also on a vmware guest instance, receiving relayed emails from server #1. Benefits? You can burn the bridge at any time. You can snapshot images, duplicate them, and manipulate what content is in them. Need a wiped image? No problem. Restore from the initial install. Get a FBI subpoena for the server? Hand over an already prepared empty vmware image with the server software and configuration but no content, and no worries about log files revealing something you missed. Incidentally, that 24.187.234.187 was associated with a web server and mail server hosting service (e.g. virtual server) offered by Optimum Online, a virtual services provider. It really looks like someone was playing a game of "guess which can" with us.

211 @153 Christopher Taylor The black ops reference is appropriate and I think should suggest to us to stop thinking she and her partners of the crime syndicate were stupid rookies. We're being thrown evidence of servers in bathrooms, at hosting providers in Colorado that are empty images, in their garage, in hosting companies in Chappaqua, etc. It's nonsense. Someone's had fun creating lots of false trails for folks to chase. I highly doubt they had rookies on this. The people she was working with and taking money from (e.g. Qatar, UAE, Oman, etc.) are very competent at IT security and they would check. Having worked with some in the past, you have to remember that they operate in authoritarian countries where the Internet is heavily monitored. These people are extremely competent security professionals because they go after dissidents while also concealing the tracks of their corrupt leaders. Qatar's cyber security spooks aren't about to let their leadership send emails to the Clintons without the assurance things were tight. Of course, there are just things that don't get put in emails - like commitments to donations in exchange for black ops wars to overthrow Libya, kill Qaddafi, and leave a oil production threat in total chaos. Hillary's a much more competent player who's a hell of a lot more evil than we give her credit for.

212 If the GOP and Trey Gowdy are serious they need to arrest Huma. As someone who merely works for a non-profit that gets funded by the government I have to sign a no conflict of interest statement every year so I'm sure a state dept employee does also. Huma was clearly violating that -- so arrest her ass and lean on her until the FBI is at minimum forced to swoop her up themselves. If Hillary is too big to touch fine but these 4 simultaneous jobs at once aides need to be fair game. Otherwise it is yet another example of how the rule of law only applies to white folks in flyover country and in the beltway rule of law only applies to non Democrats. They can only get away with that when most of us voluntarily comply and I"m sure I'm not alone in getting tired of paying double or more for auto and health insurance to cover the costs. If I am living in a lawless country then why am I still following the laws?

216 199 - Yes. Not forensically though without downtime, assuming same server to be resused. Otherwise yes it's a simple mailbox move to another system and decom the old one and wipe the drives a few times. It's really not that hard, little time consuming though. 196 190 - really? 217 Well, since we're already in the weeds here, what about private certificates. In the company that I just retired from, in order to send sensitive information to the DoD, we had to use private certificates issued to the person. DoD was using CAC cards and we were using certs issued by Verisign. In order to exchange an encrypted e-mail, you had to exchange signed (adding your individual certificate to the e-mail) and save that contact information. In addition, you also had to have the Root and Intermediate Root certificate saved in your certificate store. Only after jumping through all these hoops could you hope to send/receive encrypted e-mail. This is different than sending on a classified network.

Incidentally, where is the BES (Blackberry Exchange Services) server? We know Hillary used Blackberries that were not issued by State. In order to get email to a Blackberry from a company Exchange server, you need a BES server, right? Was that another VM? Or another actual machine? I expect if the FBI is actually investigating this, they know about BES servers (they do quite well from my experience). But our news media hasn't gotten around to this question yet. Mail doesn't just go from Exchange to a Blackberry without a little help. Hey media... there's some more servers out there you haven't caught onto yet.

254 There's an element of Gell-Mann Amnesia here, in that most people don't know enough about IP addresses or mail servers or networks to know whether assertions made even make sense. Without *substantial* missing information, that statements that the same IP means they're on the same server, or that "hacking" an e-mail account on a server gives you access to others are just not operative. This is a massive problem with tech and science news, in that generally there's not enough information in an article to know whether a claim even makes sense. The number of deals between the State Department and Clinton Foundation donors makes sense, however.

262 LGoPs and BB Wolf... the printed emails are a huge problem, aren't they? Hillary was required by law to return State property. Not facsimiles of it, photocopies of it, printouts of what it looked like without the actual property and its meta-data. The actual email content was State intellectual property. At a former workplace, we had an employee forwarding emails to personal email and conducting sexual harassment crimes involving parties in the workplace. The work-related emails were the company's property and the private email hosting firm was forced to provide it, allowing the firm to prosecute. The meta-data was instrumental in some of the claims. Hillary took that without legal authorization and never returned it. Where is the most basic of charges - theft of intellectual property? Oh right, I'm sure the Department of Justice is waiting to charge her for treason and is skipping the little stuff we know she's guilty of. But back to your points, you're right. That is the smoking gun of a major cover-up: she gave print-outs of emails, not email data. The two are legally, critically, not at all the same.

298 I know that I complain a lot about the American people not caring about scandals like these - particularly if they're Democrat scandals. But I wonder if I am right? I personally can't actually reach out and touch more than a handful of people - those that live around me and have contact with me. And I know that many of them are as upset as me. I get my information from the TV, just like everyone else. And if the TV doesn't show outrage, then it seems like there is none. Hence my sense of isolation and doom.
And of course then I realize that the TV - at least the information gathering part - is controlled overwhelmingly by leftist's and Democrat sympathizers. And their philosophy is the same as the tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it. If they don't talk about it, it isn't happening.
I'll bet there are a lot more out there that are outraged but they have no voice. Because CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, the NYT, WaPo and all the rest have taken their voice away.
And that is a crime. And that is treason.

313 @279 BB Wolf: When you think of what she made government property in that case, it's mind boggling. We know she used a personal Blackberry, which requires BES Servers, relays through Blackberry as I understand it in order to relay to their devices, and per the sharing of IP with different domains, that relay server (proxy, mail gateway, whatever it was) - it's all contaminated. Im really eager to hear what is learned of the production of these header-free fusion reports. As I understand it, someone like Huma had access to the interior mail system, summarized reports with top secret, secret, etc. data, and then wrote up emails without any of the headers using that intelligence - fusing the intelligence into a briefing and sending it over unsecured channels. It seems that has to be how this stuff got out, no? Of course, we know that Obama will pardon Hillary, Huma, whomever before any charges are filed - just as Bill Clinton pardoned CIA director John Deutsch for his violations.

At least one of the "young hotties" on staff at Epstein Island avers that she arrived on the island on employment terms which were knowingly false and described no sexual contact, and that once there, she was (a) forcibly prevented from leaving, and (b) physically compelled without her consent to "service" Epstein's guests.

Imagine if a Republican presidential hopeful were married to a spouse who had made repeated trips to Epstein Island. It would be at the top of every news cycle for months on end. Blaring wartime type, above the fold headlines in every edition of every newspaper.

May sound counter-intuitive but that was my family's experience with grandma. They were outstanding.Grandma's last moments were with her three grandkids (parents passed) gathered 'round her bed and oldest sister reading psalms to her as she breathed her last. It was as positive as it could have been.

Mom, God bless her, fought every day long after her passing was a foregone conclusion and died with only one of us, asleep, in the hospital room and hooked up to all manner of machines.

If I have a choice, I want to go like grandma.

I love hospice folks.

392 My theory: We all know Hillary set up her private server so she could solicit donations to her slush fund foundation in exchange for diplomatic favors. What if - knowing it would be easily hacked, in fact setting this entire system up for the explicit purpose of it being "hacked" - what if she also sold US intelligence secrets in exchange for donations. The "oops! We were hacked!" line gives her plausible deniability, and we all know how fine the Clintons like to cut their lines.

474 Why all the debate over the level of security this server(s) did or did not have? Nothing Microsoft sells is secure. How did the Office of Personnel get hacked? Microsoft servers. How did the IRS get hacked? Microsoft. etc. In fact, if Hillary had any brains she would say, "Hey, whether the Exchange server is in the data center at Foggy Bottom or in my barn, any hacker worth his pay could hack it. So what difference does it make?"

479 Greetings from behind enemy lines. Well taking a well earned break from posting over at Space Battles (a bastion of leftwing loonyness).

You can literally start to feel the nerves coming apart over there. The Left is failing around the world and here in the US and many of them are not taking it well at all. Add in this email thing and some of the mods over there are getting downright grumpy. I find myself amused however I think that prudence suggests that I hold back on poking them with sticks until Trump is safely in the lead over the Hildabeast.

Then it will be time to gloat and taunt them with Happy Pro Trump threads.

A few of us were advance party riding in an AF KC-10 headed up to Eielson AFB for a big live fire exercise on the AF impact areas. We were just piggybacking on their scheduled flight, and to pass the time, the crew had a great time showing us all kinds of cool stuff in the bird, including the refueling boom operator's station. Anyway, when we passed McKinley/Denali, they announced it and had us all cycle through the cockpit to check out the view......and circled the mountain to ensure that we all had a good, long look. Always wondered if that long circle got the crew into trouble (about 10 minutes, if memory serves).

This was all hashed out hours ago, FWIW. Occams Razor says same server, but sharing a public IP address means nothing. There could be no servers at that physical location, everything could be set up with VPN or "in the cloud" (remote hosting) or set up using gateways or... I mean, really the possibilities are endless. However, the MX records (what we can see at least without the digital metadata from the actual emails) seem to indicate either a single server, or at the very least one server used to relay the mail to two different servers, which, again, can be located literally anywhere on the planet with an internet connection.

We can reasonably deduce those SSL certs were specifically for email (hence the "mail." sub-domains they are associated with).  The fact the their email certificates for both domains used the same IP then both certs were installed to hardware inside the same network.

Throw all the "best practices" out and think "if I were a corrupt politician, how would I obscure my written record of corruption in the most obtuse, ridiculous, difficult to understand way?" Think Rose Law firm Billing records, which were missing for years then showed up in a closet at the white house 2 days after the statute of limitations ran out on them. Most people would say "no one would ever store incriminating documents in a closet in the white house, that makes no sense." Well, it's the Clintons. Their minds work differently. All that being said, you're probably right and it's probably no more complicated then the foundations IT guy piggybacked hillarys server on his existing set up. But who knows?

Outer perimeter is the ISP, the NOC (network operations center), their system of firewall protections to restrict the type of traffic and commands that even reach the server the email system is hosted on.
Then that server itself has an operating system that must be kept up to day to patch frequently uncovered security defects.
The Web hosting services on it must be kept secure.
Then the email server program itself must be maintained, to keep it secure.
That also includes the underlying database core tech, typically SQL.

All those layers have to be kept secure.  Because behind them sits nothing but block of text in a database.

Multiple logical 'post offices' can be run on an email server, each with many internal departments or personal mailboxes, generally limited only by the total capacity of the logical hard drive the connected database resides upon.  There are other practical limits to the total size and complexity, but the overall front-end structures are similar be it 2 email accounts or 20,000.  in the latter you'd configure several servers, usually on a logical order by company departments or geographical regions and typically the server is placed on the same physical network as the people whose mailboxes are in it.
Excepting web-based email systems.
And that also introduces other security risks related to the browser being utilized, etc.

565 As a reasonably tech-savvy, but definitely non "IT" guy I've been thinking about the thumb drive aspect of the issue and I'm hoping one of the many smarter-than-me folks can help clarify: in order to put the emails ON the thumb drive(s), they needed to be connected to a machine that contained electronic versions of the emails to make the transfer. This raises a few issues and questions: 1. Do servers have USB ports (probably a dumb question)? Even if they do, I think it's safe to assume that neither Hillary nor the lawyer have the expertise to have made the transfer to the drives from the server itself, but regardless of that... 2. Can you print FROM the server directly or is it more likely the case that the emails (again, in whatever electronic form) were transported to a standalone PC for review and printing? In either of these cases it would seem to be the case that there should be some likelihood of having a copy of the actual data on either that PC or within the storage media of the printer used... What's more the government has not only the opportunity, but the DUTY to seize any such devices in order to secure the classified materials contained therein as part of containing this spill. Am I missing something? I mean, this stuff didn't just start shooting out of the printer through osmosis... Thoughts?

566 That must have made it easier for the illegal foreign donations to be shifted to the Foundation. Actually it makes sense to put everything together the bank accounts are probably connected as well... just keep the graft coming. My question is, why would we think Hillary was even Secretary of State? How much did Bill do and she take credit for? Isn't it sexist for a wife to depend on her husband so much she can't even use the government accounts, she has to have him keep track of stuff or her? An independent woman Hillary is not.
