Hawaii $1.5M-O
— Slublog

How much does Obama's vacation cost?

Short answer - a lot.

Just consider these estimates on part of the costs of the latest Obama Hawaii trip:

* Mrs. Obama’s early flight to Hawaii: $63,000 (White House Dossier)

* Obama’s round trip flight to Hawaii: $1 million (GAO estimates)

* Housing in beachfront homes for Secret Service and Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800

* Costs for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for 24 staff) – excluding meals and other room costs

* Police overtime: $250,000 (2009 costs reported by Honolulu Police Department)

* Ambulance: $10,000 (City Spokesperson)

TOTAL COST: $1,474,200

The guys at HillBuzz show just how unprecedented this vacation is, compared to where other recent presidents spent their Christmas vacations. Most presidents chose to spend Christmas either at the White House or at Camp David, which is 70 miles away from D.C. Obama's choice of vacation spot is about 4,800 miles from Washington and his decision forces security and other staff to miss Christmas with their families. Other recent presidents showed more consideration for the needs of those who work for them. The Obamas...have not.

Their decision really should not be that surprising, since they haven't shown much consideration for how their vacations impact citizens in the past. Sure, millions of Americans may be out of work, and the economy is in the crapper, but this president won't allow such distractions to get in the way of his desire to spend time basking in the Hawaiian sun.

The worst aspect of this story? The same media that freaked out over a Republican president spending time at a ranch he owned free and clear are writing puff pieces about the current president's indulgences on our dime.

So, fellow wingnuts...how's the cake? Mine is a bit dry.

I bet you money that this vacation costs a lot more than $1.5 million.  The Obamas are sooo ghetto.  They are like f-ing Welfare Queens living large on the taxpayer dime.  I hate them both.

Color me pissed.

2 Oh, and remember how Oblowme said that he and Michelle were affected by the bad economy too?  I don't see them tightening their belts at all.  If anything, by the looks of Moochelle lately, her belt has had to have some extra holes put in.  The girl is looking FAT with an "F" not a "Ph".

6 For the record "let them eat cake" does not mean cake, as in delicious birthday type delicacies.

Cake, back in the day this term was used, meant the bread dough that fell to the bottom of the oven getting burnt rock hard over the course of the day.

11 Whenever these guys -- Obama and Clinton are most prominent -- talk about how rich they are, they're lying.

All of Obama's (and Clinton's) life he's been very comfortable but always around people much richer than himself.  Thomas Lifson talks about Obama's youth in Indonesia, where he would have been resentful of the children of American employees, whereas his stepdad wasn't paid all that much.

He returns to Hawaii to attend the fanciest of private schools.

He goes to private, exclusive Occidental.

He then goes to Columbia (and allegedly attends a class or two) with all of its Ivy pedigree.

I can't speak to his early community organizing but he left that quickly enough.

Harvard Law has all of the children of rich lawyers looking to be rich lawyers and it's just dripping with money.

He goes into politics and he has to hobnob with rich donors (not to mention Bill Ayers, the perfumed prince).

Now, he's trying to bum weekends in Italy from his rich "friends".  He's always been resentful and bitter.

I disagree. This man is a poor steward of taxpayer money.  He is a profligate spender in his personal life and in his job as President.  He also gets no censure from the media who was obsessed with GWB's vacation schedule and how much money he spent.  I recall the media going nuts before Jenna Bush got married as they speculated how she was going to have a huge State wedding while the economy was "in the toilet"--how could she justify that kind of spending?  (This is back in the days of 6% unemployment, too).  They had to eat crow as she had a simple wedding at her parents' home in Crawford TX.  She didn't have some huge extravaganza like Chelsea Clinton did who also didn't come under any criticism and who's wedding was feted by the MFM.

He is completely insensitive to the plight of the average American, and there is absolutely no outcry from the media.  It's disgusting.  It has nothing to do with ODS.

I don't expect Obama to to do a Carter and spend his post white house years hammering nails on Habitat for Humanity houses. I wonder if he can find a way to turn his continuous golfing and eating at fine restaurants into a charitable endeavor. Cause, you know, he has to keep up the myth that he cares about the poor.

Yes, which he has been doing from Hawaii.  I guess the media can just cream all over themselves as they discuss in sad, hushed tones about how hard it is for the President who not only came to Paradise late, but also how it's been a working vacation.  I'm sure they will pontificate on their panels that he is the hardest working president ever and how unprecedented it is that he is accomplishing so much while he is away.  He's so effective and such a hard worker, he, Michelle, and the girls all deserve to go to somewhere nice to get away from it all after they get back to D.C.  Perhaps Tahiti would be nice.

How would you know?  The last 3 GOP Presidents have vacationed at their own places or Camp David.  I don't remember Ford or Nixon doing anything even approaching this.  No Republican (even the Vichy) would have been stupid enough to close down Broadway because of a personal "date night".  That was beyond insane, and it was offensive that anyone would even try to justify that, especially with something so stupid as "he promised her a date."  That buzzing of lower Manhattan would have led to investigations, with full support from the right to find out what dumbshits were involved.

No, this is something that our buddies just don't do.  If they did, we would be even more pissed off at them than we are at the Indonesian.

Of course, if any other President had gone around the world calling the US a piece of shit they would have been run out of office long, long ago, as such traitors should be.

56 So James, if you are still here, another thing I resent about the Obamas is them lecturing me about my health and what kind of foods I should be stuffing in my piehole.  The meddling FLATUS--First Lady Against The United States or First Large Ass of The United States, (you choose) has made it her personal mission to go on an anti-obesity campaign to save our nations children from their fat selves.  Well look and see what they ate for dinner last night (as per a friendly Hawaiian newspaper):

Last night, Barack and Michelle Obama, Obama's sister and her husband and a half dozen friends dined at one of the President's favorite restaurants in Hawaii, Alan Wong's on King Street.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Obama has adventurous tastes, says Wong, and always orders the multicourse chef's menuMichelle, who usually eats lighter, joined him last night.  On the menu: A trio of appetizers: Wong's seafood cake, a tomato with li hing mui dressing and Wong's famous "soup and sandwich," a two-color Big Island tomato soup and foie gras grilled cheese sandwich. Lobster lasagna. Ginger-crusted onaga.  The President's favorite entree, soy-braised shortribs.  And his favorite dessert, "The Coconut," coconut ice cream covered with dark chocolate, in a shape that looks exactly like half a coconut, served with a colorful array of tropical fruits.

Ordinarily, I could give a rat's ass what the President and his family eat.  When they are lecturing and hectoring me and regulating what I can eat, then I question their hypocrisy.  Oh, and foie gras was temporarily banned in Chicago for 2 years until resteraunts fought it.

57 "BINGO!  I'm sure that's part of it, clearing airspace could be part of it, security, security, security.  He is POTUS of the greatest Superpower (for now anyways). "

Well, yes. I expect and am comfortable paying quite a bit for security for POTUS in general. It just didn't occur to me that whatever security we're using ran that high. FLOTUS cost $63k for her flight. That was more the number I was expecting to hear, and I have no complaints about a number like that for her flight (the "just because I wanted to leave early" part sure, the actual cost of it not so much). That sounds along the lines of "expensive private jet rate" or "Fill up AF1 with secret service and take off" type costs, which there's really no way to get around anyway. The rate for Barack's flight just dumbfounded me as to how you could even rack up that high of a cost in the first place. It's a "full on, ground all flights within 500 miles and send a jet escort with him the whole way" type cost. That just blew me away and made me wonder what SOP was for POTUS flying around, and if they did something abnormal this time that made it more expensive.

They think no one notices these things.

I don't think they think about it for the most part, Eman.  I think it's virtually a reflex action, almost animal.  "Working memory overload" is a term of art and just a pet theory when applied here.  (It's typically used to explain things like the Monty Hall problem.)  But I thought of it watching Christ Christie dressing down one of those teachers.  In one breath, it was all about the money money money.  In the next breath, she was in it for the love.  No awareness of the contradiction.  With one set of thoughts, she was locked into one viewpoint; with another set, it was like she was another person (and that other person who was talking about money, well, she was just gone--never existed).

For some of them, yeah, they're deliberately duplicitous.  For most, no.  They can't hold the two points of view in their heads at once and reconcile them.

Posted by: rdbrewer at December 30, 2010 09:01 PM (Ue7xZ)

65 Anyway, Eman, notice how often they do it.  It is and it will always be an evergreen argument for us.  Because we're railing against an unavoidable part of their nature.

That's it. My new pet name for our beloved Jug-Eared Marxist is Msr. Creosote.

I used to take some solace in that. The problem is he has always outsourced that "infrastructure" work to someone else. Obama himself is a lazy-assed slacker voting present on contentious issues that might really display just how Progressive (Marxist) he is. He's done it his whole life. He politics off a teleprompter someone else's rhetoric. When done he plays golf, basketball, and whatnot while cooling down with a burger, fries, and ice cream. Meanwhile, the Valerie Jarretts, David Axelrods, David Plouffes, Rahm Emmanuels, Nancy Pelosis, and Harry Reids do all the dirty work of actual legislation, astroturfing, and advising for czars.

Barack Antoinette remains the vessel he always was only now he and Michelle run a bottomless tab.

Obama does damage to everything he touches. And to what others do on his behalf.

75 Also, Kevin at Hillbuzz did a listing back on the 22nd of where past presidents have spent their vacays. Don't know how accurate it is but here is his rundown: Reagan: White House all 8 years Bush#1: Camp David all 4 years Clintons: Hilton Head SC (which he says they got reamed for and didn't do again), White House 6 years, and Sarajevo with the troops Dubya: Camp David all 8 years Obamas: Hawaii both years http://tinyurl.com/24vxzsk And it's been said, but in the presidency you serve, you are not served. They're living like freaking royalty and telling the rest of us to suck it up as they beat up businesses and take our savings and give them to campaign donors, and just generally screw up everything else.

Shit, with all the crap they pull EVERY DAY don't we have something to slap on the bench for these jackholes? Or do they really keep it coming so fast and furious we never even have time to detail the charges before the next scandal?

Congress needs to start de-funding the agencies (EPA, FCC) Obama is trying to use to get around the law. We might not make it if we don't hit back hard on that topic.

89 So Clinton maintains he caught flack for going to Hilton Head eh? A little search finds two articles on his trip, one from CNN and one from the LAT.

CNN fluffs him for the Hilton Head trip and gives him some small grief over taking money from "Asian-Americans" illegally (except they do not say that.)  We now know that the money came from the Chinese commies and it was a swap for missile technology.

The LAT is NOTHING but fluff.

92 What is interesting, well, sort of, is that whereas the zany media portrayed and contrasted  GW as a poor, little rich boy, and Obama supposedly as a man of the people, the truth of the matter is that GW was a humble, man of the people, and Obama is a pompous, lazy, useless and decadent dilletante and just another slimy, ordinary street hustler, whose extremely irresponsible, oftentimes bizarre and sleazy behavior has, in my opinion, only served to reinforce the often perceived stereotype rightly or wrongly attributed to some black people. What a shallow, obtuse and clueless putz. What an embarrassment to good, decent black people. What an empty suit ..., and what a huge disappointment to some of us.

100 I read (admittedly in a comments section, IIRC, and not from a 'news' report) that the One and the rest of the family are also flying back separately just like their twin trips to Hawaii. Well, at least Bo isn't getting a third flight back just for him.

I also seem to recall reading that Bo wasn't quarantined or was let in without having completed all his rabies shots or the like--kind of the reverse of the Yes, Prime Minister where the French are trying to screw the British over language precedence in the Chunnel trains by giving a Trojan Horse gift of a dog to H.M. the Queen knowing that British law demands a long quarantine time (Britain is rabies free and intends staying that way) with the French hoping to manufacture a diplomatic incident over "rejecting" the French dog to gain French-first on signs in all the trains as a concession for the insult of not allowing the gift dog in immediately.

At least the beaches were covered in shit so they didn't get that fun out of their trip.

All right... by the cut of your suit, you went to Oxford or wherever. Naturally you think human beings dress like that. Which means that you were at that school by the grace of someone else's charity: hence that chip on your shoulder. And since you're first thought about me ran to "orphan," that's what I'd say you are.

Here's mine:

All right... by the crease in your pants, you went to Harvard or wherever. Naturally you think human beings dress like that. But you wear it with such disdain, my guess is you didn't come from money, and your school friends never let you forget it. Which means that you were at that school by the grace of someone else's charity: hence that chip on your shoulder. And since you're first thought about me ran to "fatherless," that's what I'd say you are.

Damn.

However, would it surprise you at all if Obama were to one day burst out with something like this?

The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

I feel sorry for all the security people.  Obama insists on borrowing a house with a beach view.  So all the Secret Service and SEALs are having ulcers thinking about a lone nutjob paddling a rubber boat ashore to take a stab at being famous.  Plus being dragged almost 5,000 miles from home during holiday season, while Obama has his family there they do not.  Meanwhile PACFLT probably has an ABM configured Aegis cruiser on alert in case North Korea takes another stab at launching another missile at Hawai'i.

But that is all Obama thinks about is what is good for him.  Never about how his actings impact anyone else.

So Obama has banned cameras on the beach and the media reports that there can be no more pictures of him with his shirt off.

121 A big part of the cost of the travel is that wherever POTUS goes they pack up all the armored/assault vehicles and other shit it takes to protect him, like even a Marine One helicopter. They stuff it all into C-17s for the trip. Also, I don't know if they still do it, but they used to take along a hardened 747 with analog controls as backup too, in case of nuke or EMP attack.

So yeah, its real expensive for any POTUS to travel. I thought is was telling that the previous presidents spent Christmas in or near DC for the staff's benefit, but not this current one.
