Guest Blogger in the LA Times: We Young Urban Voters Supported Obamacare, But No One Told Us We'd Be The Ones Paying For It
— Ace

Lot of that goin' 'round, huh?

I’m a healthy 34-year-old with a taxable income hovering right around the Obamacare subsidy level who, for the last several years, has purchased a relatively inexpensive catastrophic health insurance plan from Blue Shield....

Last month, however, I received a letter from my insurance company informing me that my plan was “no longer available” due to “new requirements for health coverage under the Affordable Care Act.” [M]y monthly premium is going to rise by nearly 43% to $214 a month.

My old plan was as bare-bones as they came, so I assumed that even though the new plan would cost more, my coverage would improve under Obamacare, at least marginally.

It did not.

Under my old plan, my maximum out-of-pocket expense was $4,900. Under the new plan, I’m on the hook for up to $6,350. Copays for my doctor visits will double. For urgent-care visits, they will quadruple. Though slightly cheaper plans exist if I decide to shop around on the exchange, I will lose my dental coverage should I switch.

Needless to say, I am not pleased.

Most young, middle-class Americans I know are happy that millions of previously uninsured people will receive free or heavily subsidized insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

We just didn’t realize that, unless we had health insurance at work, we’d be the ones paying for it.

Obamacare: Catastrophic policy coverage at comprehensive policy prices. Because that's Better Insurance, somehow.

Oh you get free birth control pills or something.

Wow, these are the most expensive free birth control pills I've ever seen.

This is hitting a lot of Republicans right now-- small business owners, independent contractors. People who understand they have to make their costs each month or they don't eat.

But it is interesting to note it's going to hit a lot of liberal freelance magazine writers and such -- people who write articles for a living.

Obama would love to ignore the Republican victims of his policies, but can he ignore the progressive chattering classes, too?

Below, a Fun Halloween Prank, and/or a Visual Metaphor for Obamacare:

Thanks to @slublog for the video, and thanks to Monty for the Doom-y LA Times piece.

Whoever decides to come to the US for medical care? (Because that is one of the top reasons for B-1/B-2 non immigrant visas. Are all of those unhealthy visitors going to get free care too?? What kills me is that these liberals who have managed to earn a good living don't realize that there is no such thing as FREE.  Who did they think was going to pay for the uninsured?   Pennies from heaven?

I relish in their distress.

The "elite" niece of Joe Biden had to go to criminal court this week to answer charges of resisting arrest and taking a swing at a police officer.  She was arrested for getting into a fight with a roommate over unpaid rent.  She told the arresting officers "Don't you know who I am?" and took a swing at one.

Once at the precint, she told an officer that she had use the restroom and then tried to escape.  As the officer tried to put her back in her cell, she clung onto the cell frame.

These are the young, urban, liberal douchbags in a  nutshell.

So basically you're saying that your concern for the poor stops at the point where it intersects your wallet?

Don't you dare to ever call conservatives "heartless" again.  We are the ones who have been paying these taxes and fees AND STILL giving to charities for years and years.

I intend to tell everyone I can that the only cure for this is that a different party (don't even mention the (R) brand) needs to take over the Senate and White House before it can be fixed. The Democrats caused this mess, some 'other' party needs to fix it.

105 And if this individual thinks employer-provided health insurance would save him from cost escalation, he's dreaming. Unless your company is desperate to keep you, or you're an exec who can dictate what coverage the company will provide and damn the cost, you will find yourself on the hook for higher copays, higher out-of-pocket, employers that previously covered spouses and children are expecting the employee to pony up. Now, mind you, I think something had to be done in terms of guaranteed-issue. Medicine has gotten to the point that you probably have something an insurer would consider a 'preexisting condition' just by virtue of making it to 55. Blood pressure a little high one time six years ago? Preexisting condition. Ever had a migraine headache? Preexisting condition. Plantar wart? Hemorrhoids? If you've ever seen a doctor for it, ever, an insurer will deny coverage for anything within six pages of it in the Merck book if you ever try to apply for new individual coverage. Something had to be done there. But Obamacare basically mandated that you will pay not just for your own coverage, and not just for risk-pooling (which is what INSURANCE is about) but for a lot of very predictable everyday expenses, and that's absurd.

A lot of them are just going to go clinically catatonic, retreating completely into their inner selves and losing all ability to engage with the outside world. Stunned bunnies sitting motionless.

There will probably be a few who will blossom and rise to the challenges of survival. The rest will be easy prey for the two-legged feral predators who always thrive in any societal collapse.

As hard as he has been hit financially he is still economically illiterate enough to think that it wouldn't still be coming out of his pocket if only the the magic business fairy would pay for it.

One of the worst aspects of socialism is the cost shifting.  No one has any idea what things actually cost or is who is paying for them.  Therefore it is impossible to make rational decisions.  That is why socialist economies always end up piling one absurdity upon another... kind of like subsidizing tobacco farmers while taxing the end user.

113 so, I have always wondered about the german jews during the hitler administration. I have always wondered about the frog in the water element of existing in germany under the hitler administration as a german jew, when was it apparent that it was time to get out? was there a time that it was to early to blow out and leave you wealth behind? was there a goldilocks moment when it was just right to leave? before it was too late to leave was there a moment it apeared as if it was too late to leave? in retrospect it seems, to me anyway, that the smart money was to get going as soon as the hitler administration approved of having you and your stuff labeled with yellow patches and your stuff being broken. hindsight is always better than what is available when you are in the moment, in the melee. some people must have though "hey, when this nonsense blows over we are going to be in a great position" or maybe even "well we have to be able to reach some sort of accomodation with the hitler admnistration, they have to have a number, they are not entirely unreasonable, let's make a deal." I am not sure I would have selected the right time to leave, heck I am in nyc and I should probably have headed out of here undr Bush, however, I am certain that the only smart thing to do was to leave hitler's germany as soon as was possible and everyone who delayed made a mistake;even if it was understandable. Anywayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy, for insurance companies and media sorts who happen by the hq, I would suggest you are wise to abandon the obama administration as soon as possible. do not rely upon their assurances and do not assume a deal may be struck, your only hope is to abandon all hope of accomodation, embrace the truth, and scream it to anyone who will listen.

Google tapped to fix Obamacare - time hack 31 October. Can Google fix it before December 15? Jumping off from ace's earlier point, the main problem with all these left-wing bureaucrats and magazine writers is that they don't understand that there are some jobs you can't just bullshit your way through.

They think that because they've spent their careers advancing through nepotism, affirmative action, inside connections, ass kissing, finger pointing and credit grabbing that this is how EVERYTHING works.

Well, it doesn't. Try bullshitting your way through heart surgery. Or an engineering project. Or building a road.

There are some jobs where your ass is on the line every single time. You fuck up, you get fired. Not only that, you may tank your credibility so badly in your industry that you can't get re-hired.

But these dicks don't understand that. Because all they do is lie, cheat, and steal their way through life.

There were Jews who supported Hitler n the early days.  In part, this was because the Wiemar Republic was pretty much a complete failure and the country was falling apart and partly because no one, including the Jews, could believe that the Nazis could be that crazy evil.   I think that is some of what were seeing here. I don't think the young liberal Obots were capable of believing that Barky would just lie to them like that.  That's why we are seeing this shock and outrage when the cold, wet blanket of truth hits them in the face.

I worry also about what will come next.  If Barky fails as bad as it appears that he will fail, what political group will seize control, particularly given that the GOP has shown themselves to be essentially worthless?  I do not think it impossible that a true right wing dictatorship could seize control once our money is valueless, jobs a thing of the past, and hunger across the land.

@155  I think that is some of what were seeing here. I don't think the young liberal Obots were capable of believing that Barky would just lie to them like that. That's why we are seeing this shock and outrage when the cold, wet blanket of truth hits them in the face.

In fact, the opposite is more likely to be true. You negotiate with the hospital. Together they find a way for you to pay something. They don't want to charge you more than you can handle, lest you discharge the debt altogether in bankruptcy. (But I agree that this is not a good way to go if you have kids or assets to protect. )

183 The Internal Revenue Service shared highly confidential tax information of several Tea Party groups in the IRS scandal with the Federal Election Commission, a clear violation of federal law, according to newly obtained emails.

The public watchdog group Judicial Watch told Secrets Thursday that it was former scandal boss Lois Lerner who shared the information on groups including the American Future Fund and the American Issues Project.

The emails obtained by Judicial Watch show that the IRS, which was considering the tax status of the groups, gave the FEC the tax returns of the groups, including income, expenditures and staff pay. The emails also revealed the exact wording of the prying political questions the IRS wanted the groups to reveal, such as their goals and the requests for brochures and ads.

This story has been kicking around in my head for quite some time now:

In the early 1800s, an English nobleman was travelling through the back country of Kentucky.  It was getting late in the day and he needed a place to sleep for nite when he saw a farmer tilling the fields along the path/road.  He called out to the farmer, asking where the farmer's master was.  The farmer looked at the nobleman and responded "I reckon that SOB ain't been born yet".

Today's young urban 'elite' disagreed with that sentiment, and are now learning the cost.

Lather, rinse, repeat by a couple million people and the businesses that kissed Obama's ass might just wake the hell up. And the economy *is* going to tank unless Obama goes before John Roberts on bended knee and begs him to reconsider. If you've ever experienced that power of taxpayers with a couple hundred extra in their wallets (which I have) it's not a hefty mental exercise to imagine just the opposite.

If you've ever seen a doctor for it, ever, an insurer will deny coverage for anything within six pages of it in the Merck book if you ever try to apply for new individual coverage. Something had to be done there. Bullshit. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. This is Obama scars tactics stuff. I've been an insurance agent for decades and what you're saying just inst true.

I own a small software business that I started in 1991.  Today I have 10 highly paid programmers/engineers who have recieved health insurance fully paid by me as well as 50% of dependents premium.  It is one of the better policies but over the years I have had to increase the deductable while I limit the employees to $1k, the rest I get to pay.  Now comes the bad parts.

My premium increases 2010 +20%, 2011 +17% and 2012 +25%.  Jan 2013 gave some relief as it was ONLY +13%.  I got a letter last week that my premimums would increase by +40%-+50%.  I called and asked which and the answer "we are not sure yet but it can be even more".

I am faced with a major problem in that I either push everyone into the exhanges (ok for me since I am on Medicare) or I have to terminate an employee.  So if I do my civic duty and protect my people then I have to release one or I just dump onto the exchanges.  Since I am under 50 people I don't think (hopefully) I have to pay a TAX if I do cancel the policy.  But I will most likely loose my best people since they are highly skilled and won't have a problem getting an equivilent job.

250 We have to shout this loud and clear. This is hurting real people, and not the rich that the Democrats told everyone was going to pay for all the goodies. Not everyone is in the individual market out of choice, but because they can't get a full-time job or have a job where the employer won't offer coverage.  My employer-based coverage has gone up 33% the last two years, and we lost coverage through the spouse's workplace because he was considered a contract worker and the company dropped benefits for them. All of this was in the past 2 years and directly a result of ACA. And the employer mandate hasn't even hit yet!!  People who are scraping by are going to be under water, losing insurance if they had it before, and then getting docked by the IRS for not complying.

Thanks for the "help," assholes.

The word "affordable" should have been a tell. That's a silly marketing word, like "three easy payments!"  But somehow the country's been under a spell where a lot of people simply refused to see the writing on the wall.  Somehow, it was going to all be okay, and everyone would get the gold at the end of the rainbow. Whatever faith I had in our electorate has evaporated faster than the steam on Obama's teleprompter.

252 Leftism is, in large part, the upper classes asserting their "thoroughly-Undivine" right to rule, and the lower classes (including the Middle Class) asserting their desire to be ruled. The upper classes do so by empathizing their (allegedly) superior intellect, as well as their (allegedly) superior moral character. They then postulate a zero-sum, distributionistic reality, in which the size of the pie is always constant, and all of life is an attempt to allocate as much of that pie to oneself and one's collective as possible. Therein lie the seeds of the class struggle(s), and the ensuing milieu which allows the upper classes to ensure their power by playing the kyrocratic game much better than the Middle Class (which follows, since they're much better positioned to do so, the game is their own idea, and they are in fact smarter than the Middle Class as a conglomerate). For the Middle Class to accept too many of these premises, is therefore folly, especially as most of them are in fact, thoroughly fallacious.

279 If the economy were in fact a zero sum game, Leftism would not be as detrimental as it is. For one, society's "general level of wealth and prosperity" would remain constant. However, since this model is erroneous, Leftism always leads to a general deterioration of the general standard of living of any society to which it is applied, especially in the long term. This is part of what makes Leftism thoroughly malevolent (and intentionally so, as this outcome is an empirically-established given).

293 Camp’s panel, nonetheless, has pieced together the NOM case and tells NRO that an IRS agent working in the Exempt Organizations Division — the same division that, until May, was under the direction of Lois Lerner, who retired under duress last month — leaked NOM’s Schedule B to Matthew Meisel, a former employee of Bain & Company, the management consultancy where former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney worked in the 1970s and 1980s and where he served as interim CEO in the early 1990s. Between his stints there, Romney founded the private-equity firm Bain Capital in 1984. After he obtained NOM’s donor list from the IRS employee, the committee says, Meisel then turned it over to the Human Rights Campaign. Neither Meisel nor the Human Rights Campaign returned calls seeking comment.

I followed the link.  Sebilius's testimony (which is quoted in the article) only mentions "under 30".  Based on that, and the lack of anything countering it in the WJS article at the link, it appears that the lack of required maternity coverage applies to everyone under 30, and not just women.  Obvious on the face of it, but definitely something that I wouldn't have put past the administration...

In any event, the point about the absurdity of requiring maternity coverage for some, but not for women in that age bracket, still applies in full.

How long until these "Someone else will pay for it." children start cheering for Obama to just take some from that pile? Posted by: bonhomme at October 31, 2013 05:24 PM (sByIH) This is already happening. - During Shutdown Theater, several private businesses were closed. - Local, state and Federal governments seize land every day, and not just via (Constitutional but twisted) eminent domain. Lots of places are intentionally hiking property taxes, creating zoning laws, or a ton of other things to drive out some people or businesses, then waiving tax requirements to attract others. - The federal patent office is completely unchecked and has no oversight. Further, courts have been notorious in recent years for selectively failing to uphold patent violation suits. - There have been a slew of selectively applied taxes, regulations, fines, and audits of "unfavored" or honey pot industries. None of this, of course, ever gets reported on. I was the lucky recipient of one of these audits recently (since I worked in the evil oil industry) and was told to pay a penalty for a violation that they refused to define.. My choice was pay up or shut down while appealing the decision that they refused to put in writing to a federal court. I gave them reams of legal precedents that were contrary to their findings and more reams of documentation of industries that were in violation of their finding, but were never audited or charged. It changed nothing.

Docs hooked me up to every electrical device in a 10 state region, I'm pretty sure one of the attachments said "Hoover Dam" on the duct tape.

So they run me for like 4 hours.  Run.  Me.  I was forrest gump "I'm ruuuning jennny!"

It reached a point where I was just wrecked and I turned to the doctor and said "when does this 'test' end?"  He said, no shit, "If you're not dead yet, now, you're good."

Welcome to govt health care.

326 The primary (nonegocentric) advantage of the Free Market (aside from Freedom, which the average proletarian has difficulty comprehending and/or contemplating, and therefore finds uninteresting) is that the Free Market can (and does) increase the size of the "general pie," and therefore more people can have more pie without having to resort to redistributionism and other thoroughly destructive activities. This, combined with a Theistic "Will to Charity" (and therefore voluntary redistribution toward the truly deserving, as part of a more general, but private, program of voluntary social assistance and betterment) can lead to a state of affairs much superior to that postulated and desired by Marxism/kyrocracy.

340 In a shocking blow against critics of racial profiling and a win for Mayor Bloomberg, a federal appeals court has halted the stop and frisk reforms ordered by a judge who ruled that aspects of the controversial policing policy were unconstitutional. The bombshell decree handed down Thursday by a three-judge panel delays the reforms, as requested by the city, until the appeals process is complete. The Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals panel also unexpectedly yanked Manhattan Federal Court Judge Shira Scheindlin off the case, slamming statements she made in court and to the media as impartial and improper. It was Scheindlin who in August ruled against the NYPD and mandated the stop and frisk reforms, including an independent monitor for the NYPD. The city almost immediately appealed the ruling and later requested a stay. The initial lawsuit was brought by Hispanic and black New Yorkers who said they were racially profiled by cops who stopped them on the street. It's really not that hard.  And meds are available outside the system. pretty easily found.  But don't go cowboy on meds, that takes a little research.  You don't mix n match that shit unless you want your liver to explode.

More bipartisan, more able to subtly slide into single payer, would not have had these probs. Obama is so incompetent his plan is just blowing up in his, and his supporter's, faces. 375 There appears to be yet another coming problem for Obamacare.

A small business owner I know told me today that he has about a dozen employees who now have coverage through his company.  He has been repeatedly telling them that they need to look into a new health plan for themselves because he can't afford to bear the increased costs for the new Obamacare plans.

Despite his repeated warnings, memos, distributed copies of newspaper articles, bulleting board posting and personal conversations, not a single one of these people have stirred themselves to check this out.  Apparently, they all  believe that the employer-paid gravy train couldn't possibly stop.  They are wrong.

I wonder how many other clueless people in the US are going to wait until the last minute and then be horrified when the hammer drops?

I'd say the young 34 year old free lance writer deserves a free "T.S." chit--you elected that moronic sumbitch, and now you can live with the consequences.

Don 't cry on my shoulder; if you had taken Econ 101  in college--instead of African American studies or something like that, you would have been able to figure out for yourself that the Lightworker's magical promises did not comport with economic reality.  But you made your choice(s) and now reality has come to bite you in the backside.  T.S.

I've got a 40 something daughter who's covered by an employer provided health plan--for a little company with half a dozen employees.  She believes Obozocare won't effect her health insurance.  After all, it's not an individual policy.  But when the owner---who is also a very close friend of my daughter--starts seeing what group health will cost in a year, all bets are off.

And of course my daughter voted for Obozo.
