49 Well that was quite thread last night on Robin thicke and his music video. Ace writes very wel and is very amusing. I think it's good to have posts on other topics than politics sometimes. It's a welcome relief and Lord knows Ace knows far more about modern pop culture than I do and yes, the constant compllaining here can get a bit much. However, I wonder whether Ace is not only tired from people who don't know and don't want to know. (and I admit I read the article but didn't wish to view the music video). But alo because he writes thoughtful stuff all day everyday? His fatigue also sounds like bloggers fatigue. Please continue to write on al kinds of things, Ace. The conservative/libertarian blogosphere really Ned's your great talent and the leftists would like nothing better for you to get burnt out and give up. If you need to appoint people to write posts or just put open threads just do it and take some time out for a vacation and whatever you do for fun. We care about you, man!

50 You probably saw that Cameron has backed down from dropping bombs on Syria. I happen to think it was public pressure and many poll research groups who forced him down, not his leadership or integrity--pah! Nevertheless, it's interesting--and sad--that the UK voice of the People can still sway and change the PM's stance, whilst in America Barry just keeps on polishing his Nobel cup while Pelosi, et. al continue to bleat total nonsense that has nothing to do with the crap they were spewing against Bush. Nobody here wants to be involved with Syria. Nobody.

54 Cameron came a cropper in Parliament because he is a weak man who allowed himself to be drawn into the Obama failure web.  Thus he joins a long list of people and companies who have been destroyed by Obama's Reverse Midas Touch.

I knew Cameron was doomed when I saw Obama dragging him around to basketball games like a mascot.  Those papers hit the British press and I am dead certain a LOT of Brits didn't like it.  It showed Cameron to be totally in control of Obama and an unserious person.

Meanwhile,  a lot of Tories did NOT like Cameron's position on gay marriage,  and a lot of Labor people (who draw voters from traditional African and Muslim immigrants) did not like it either.

A whole bunch of people were waiting to put a knife in Cameron,  and Obama gave them the excuse by asking for Britain's help on this foolish Syria mess.

I have no sympathy for Cameron at all.

That's possibly true in AL, where for a long time the sheriffs could keep the difference between what they were allotted per prisoner to feed them and what they actually spent.

But in NYC, it costs $175k per year per prisoner according to a recent article. In that case, EBT is much cheaper.

79 VIA, as far as I know, there are no direct federal/legal correlations with min wage and military pay. 90 "VIA, as far as I know, there are no direct federal/legal correlations with min wage and military pay."

Your and my upfront understanding are the same.
But as you said with the domino effect....
I am guessing that if starting pay is on par with, or close to minimum wage, it will effect recruiting efforts.

For example, current E-1 starting wages are around 18k a year, or equivalent
to a 40 hour work week rate of $9.00 an hour.

Comparing that to the current  $7.25 minimum wage, and setting all other benefits aside for the purpose of discussion, there is a clear monetary difference

Not trying to imply that the military work week is 40 hours long,

But for a young kid, the mental calculations of a $15.00 an hour minimum wage ($30k a year at 40 hr week) vs Military at $18K per year just might cause issues.

96 Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at August 31, 2013 08:19 AM (fPk8z) I don't think that the progs want to encourage young people to entertain the thought of a military career. Every action they (JEF and DoD) have taken seems to me to provide mental, financial, survival (RoE), and personal hardship to the troops, but darn few reasons to stay in. Far better that young people don't swear an Oath to the Constitution and understand responsibility, but get a free OBAMAphone and a refillable EBT card instead.

According to their annual report, which I get because I am a stockholder, it came out of shareholder funds and not ratepayer funds which  would be illegal.

So IOW, I helped pay for it.   Needless to say when I voted my shares instead of the normal "vote for recommended" I voted against.  I hope thousands of others did the same.  But I suspect they were not paying attention to this shit.  And besides, the institutional investors are the ones who really control the vote.

101 #96  I got to thinking about how Charlie Rangel keeps pushing for a draft.

At first I thought it was because he was so anti-war that he thought a draft would stop most from happening.

Now I think it isn't that.

They want a draft (including women) so they can decide who gets to go to college and who gets turned into cannon fodder.  It will keep a lot of people with children from speaking up,  because you wouldn't want your kids put on The List.

It also would allow them to draft doctors.  Because emergency shortage.

Hey Holder and Obama, THIS is your "justice for Trayvon" -- own it, and stop it. Wilmington, Delaware Kosciuszko Park in Wilmington (Hedgeville Community) A gang of about 11 teenagers (est. age up to 17 yr) gang raped two young adult women (24, 32) just after 6:45 pm, TH. Suspects remain on the loose. The report is colored blind, though all giving an opinion for the news are not 'white'. “The new criminal we’re seeing, they’re bold, they’re brazen, and they have a total disregard for life,” said Maria Cabrera, city councilwoman-at-large in Wilmington. “Who told you that it was ok to mistreat women to this magnitude? And what do you need from society so that you can make better choices,” said Wilmington Councilwoman Sherry Dorsey-Walker, whose district includes the park. [Contrast the black councilwoman's "tell us what society owes you in order for you to make better choices" to a mere citizen's response, a mature black American Male:] Baseer Powell, who had come to walk through the park, “I’m surprised this happened, but its on these kids’ parents to raise them right.” [The CBS Philly editor doesn't distinguish between "its" possessive and "it's" conjunction. Blame the typical university journalism degree for ignorant speech patterns, vocabulary/grammar.]

I had a fantastic English literature teacher when I was in high school.  He was an ex-Marine with a crew cut who loved the poetry and prose of England.

Oneof his teaching tricks was to make us argue with him, he taking on the personna of whatever period we were studying (Cavalier poets, Romantic poets, Puritans, medeival,  etc.) to make us more fully understand their point of view.

He also got attention by doing a very loud kick to his oak desk.  I think he took karate or something.  It wasloud and scary and got everyone to shut up real quick!  LOL!

126 109, 116 FOX doesn't erase the description. CBS does. How can the public assist in locating suspects with no description beyond gender and ages ranging from 11-17? It was a gang. Gangs hang out together. It's easier to locate a gang clump than a solitary individual needle in a haystack. When all suspects are on the loose, and no on in or living next to the park heard anything, it's pretty pathetic when the police response amounts to begging the rapists to turn themselves in. If the POTUS and AG and corrupt Congress critters remain on the loose, why would a brazen, bold young male rapist or gang of thugs without regard for life turn himself/themselves in; because the police asked nicely? THAT could answer what the black council woman (at large) was petitioning from the rapists, "tell us what society needs to do for you to help you make better decisions." Like gangs prefer prison to the streets. Fresh meat. To be abused rather than to abuse. In her dreams.

Looking back, I see there was a school voucher thread yesterday afternoon while I was away.

Skimming through the comments, I found things like:

"The trouble with poor school districts is that they are..  poor.  i.e., they have little money."

This person was obviously speaking at the time about inner-city areas in the context of having rich liberals who oppose vouchers  move in.

Because I've always hoped and dreamed about having the republican party someday become the "smart party", comments like this hurt.

Inner city school districts are the richest school districts in the country.  Cities like Baltimore, D.C., LA, Detroit and New York spend the equivalent of what it cost to attend Sidwell Friends.

So, when arguing the failing schools with liberals or with fellow conservatives, please, please stop making the mistake of saying that these districts don't have enough money.

Fuck.

135 Letter sent this day: "Dear Sir, In reading Student Paper X this week, I see the school has a chap floating about wishing to one day add "Service Learning" honors to diplomas, for students who went out and did "entrepreneurial work" with non-profits. One can tell much from what one chooses to honor, and not honor. Now, about this "service learning" thing: one of my first thoughts was that even in the days of de facto mandatory Christian ethos, "Missionary Work" was never put on diplomas. Second, my firm guess is that your little chap trying to do this would initially reject any idea of honoring a student doing military reserve work, because that's not what *he* thinks is needing to be honored. Third, the fact is that just as in the old days people needed land to have any chance at all, today they need jobs. Providing such is thus honorable work, and probably of far more *practical* benefit than the vast majority of non-profits. I therefore offer you a counter-proposal, that if School X ever goes through with this, that my recommendation is that you call it exactly what it will be: the "I properly conformed to certain trendy opinions" designation. I thank you for your time. "

"consensual sexual activity between teachers and students should not be criminalized"

We could call it " Droit du seigneur". After all, we know that kids are going to have sex, and we can't stop it. We know that people are going to smoke pot, and we can't stop it. We know drivers are going to violate the highway speed limits and we can't stop it. So we should just make it legal.

In the case of teachers having sex with their students we could just call it 'sex education'. In fact, it should be required, as a final exam, to see to it that the student has learned their lessons. It's only natural, it's common sense, it's fair, and Christians should just grow up and shut up about it and stop trying to force their religion on the rest of us.

We know drivers are going to violate the highway speed limits and we can't stop it. So we should just make it legal. : One Man Wrecking Crew ____ Heh, peripheral to your good point, let's not lump everything together, eh? Adult pot-, beer-, fap-, etc-use alone is not fundamentally transgressive, while dangerous driving presents an immediate threat to others. Now, non-marital sex... it's complicated.

Take note of the color of cars the next time you are out and about. Bad as that avocado green was, what we have now is black, or white, or some variation on gray. Few cars are vivid colors.

173 141. Hrothgar, "Taking back" what I haven't relinquished. What I do know is that it is up to each person, the choices they make, to accept the consequences that follow. 'Taking back' the culture would be how a usurper would put it, no? That would be like "taking back" inalienable rights, which can NOT be revoked or relinquished, by very definition. Ah, and there it is. Revisionism. The ultimate profanity, Deceit v. the Word. But again. There has always existed "group think" or gang mentality. So long as there are those who think outside of the main, there is yet free thought, and the ability to read and consider meanings, symbols, motivations, and to RESEARCH the urtext without the "deconstruction" of origination. And of the body/group that would choose to impose hell over life, every time? "What more can we/society give you to help you make better decisions?" The Constitution/Bill of Rights: citizen responsibility and equality under the law, SELF DISCIPLINE or punitive rectitude. Trickle down justice: top down accountability. "I inherited corruption" not an excuse. Cain didn't "inherit" the right to kill his brother. Justice, and the CA license plate "Just Ice" driving the LA freeways. (Joni Mitchell)

Were they the white faced hornets? They're real bastards -- the pain from their sting seems to last the longest. Last time I got zapped by one it was still burning like hell 20 minutes later.

I can only imagine what getting stung by 40 of them at once would feel like.

And speaking of pain, Dad is awake and still in bad pain so his problem must not be from cramps. I'm terrified he might have cracked a hip from flopping into bed during a transfer. It's on the same side of his body as his arthritic arm, so there's also the possibility his arthritis has attacked a different joint.

I called his home health care provider one of their nurses will eventually pay a visit.

I can't help but worry about those people who come to the food pantry.  Some of them walk several miles to get there.  Others have very ill spouses or parents that they care for.  Many of them will say "well,  I don't need that this time."  I have taken to reminding them winter is coming and that they should take the full amount allowed in order to stock up on a few items in casewe have very bad weather.

It is amazing how few people know that affirmative action (not "Equal Opportunity," but actual Affirmative Action) in hiring is the de facto law of the land because of the share of jobs that belong to employers covered by the OFCCP. The irony? For the federal government, it's not so much. Instead of debilitating fines and having the DoJ crawl around in their pants if the numbers don't add up, federal agencies just have to submit weakass, often incomplete reports to department-level offices populated by people with advanced degrees in some "*-studies" "discipline" who probably couldn't pass a fourth-grade arithmetic test.

But regardless of Obama's motivations (which are NEVER to secure our Constitutional Republic, and never to secure protection of our citizenry against tyranny, never protecting our inalienable rights), there is no logic for the United States Government/Military to conduct war against the Syrian people, not even against Assad who has not declared war on the USA and has not sent the Syrian Army to bomb or invade the USA. Chemical weapons. Napalm. Agent Orange. Nuclear Arms. Missiles. Bombs. IED. Bullets. Canon shell. Shrapnel. Whatever means to the end. War. "Crossing the Red Line" is Interventionist Warfare. Another series of "red line" crossings? Our government propaganda drew with the policy to wage "War On [fill in the blank]" alcohol, hemp, crime, poverty, injustice, population explosion, terror... Each "war on" red line only led to the next cross-over into authoritarianism, sold with the "best of" propaganda intentions, most recently via "compassionate conservatism" to "win the hearts and minds of the enemy". Same line as the Wilmington, Delaware council woman at large, "Tell us what more we/society/USA can do for you in order to help you" be you. /Lead a horse to water; that's as far as it goes. In 168 BC, a Roman Consul named Gaius Popillius Laenas drew a circular line in the sand around King Antiochus IV of the Seleucid Empire (decline/division subsequent to Alexander the Great, Hellenistic Babylon), then said, "Before you cross this circle I want you to give me a reply for the Roman Senate" – implying that Rome would declare war if the King stepped out of the circle without committing to leave Egypt immediately. Weighing his options, Antiochus wisely decided to withdraw. Only then did Popillius agree to shake hands with him. Would that Obama actually studied while a student. He certainly had access to the best libraries. Rather, this Potus exemplifies what education amounts to when the point is to fit in with the excellence of fraud. As per Syria? "Syria Is Not Libya" John A. Tirpak, The Air Force Magazine, Apr 2013 issue. Don't.Go.There.

But I'll defer to Cornel West on this one. He has tenure at an Ivy League school and I don't. And if anyone was going to get extra bling just for showing up it'd be Sharpton

50k for a masters degree? (including the BA I assume)

Good freaking lord, my PhD only cost me $27k in debt.  And since I took 2 years in between to work, I had already paid off some of the original number meaning I owe less than that.

And Frankly, I probably over borrowed for the PhD, but since it was subsidized Stafford's in no interest deferment, I held on to some of the money because it was a crazy time with job switching (and I didn't know how much tuition I'd owe, because I was on employee tuition remission, and if I didn't work enough hours, the tuition would have come due immediately.)

I actually think some of the extra money became a down payment for the house.

And I've been employed as a GA for the last 3 years even after the full time job ended.  So I could have paid off a bigger chunk of that debt if I wanted (but we put the money to other uses.)

Bush ordered our military into Iraq, I feared that our finest most valiant patriotic youth would be destroyed in that destructive course, suffering the loss of spirit beyond the drive to survive at all costs. As if Bush's suicidal "Karzai" Rules of Engagement weren't enough disruption to awaken Americans to what we allow inflicted upon our troops by our own politicians, with or without Congressional consent. Perpetual Redeployment. The suicide rate is there for us to witness. Whatever our national armory consisted of during/after Reagan's massive build up, it has been used and reused and is at the point where the depletion via usage is NOT being replaced. Our interventionism from Republican AND Democrat neoconservative never-ending and never-limited wars has placed the USA exactly where the USSR was when it went bankrupt and disbanded. Too big to fail only favors the global corporations at the cost of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness around the world.

310 The second law of thermodynamics does not prohibit evolution in an improbability-rich non-equilibrium Universe. To pretend otherwise is as unwise as was persecuting Galileo, based on dogma that turned out to be incompatible with reality. I'll attempt to explain the gist of the matter. In essence the second law says closed systems decay from less probable to more probable configurations. But it doesn't apply to local parts that are not closed. Consider, for example, a bathtub full of water with a plug hole. A most improbable situation. How can water be at a level that it could fall down from? It can't happen. But let's just suppose it did. Pull the plug. Out of the raw laws of physics, that bathtub full of water and the rotating planet beneath it will create a somewhat persistent structure, a vortex! The less organized has temporarily become more organized, fueled by a larger movement of improbable high water to probable low water. The universe as a whole seems to have started out in an astonishingly improbable configuration, with matter evenly distributed. It's been falling together, running downhill, ever since. Moving from a less probable to a more probable state. But local conditions, sometimes, allow the existing improbability to be concentrated, like the angular momentum of the bathwater gets concentrated to produce the vortex, and temporarily create more organized from less organized structures. To quote Samuel Morse, "What hath God wrought?"

If Ace would just give up a little control of this place, he could end up with Emily, the 21 year old supermodel brunette in the Thicke video.

Ads for booze, cigarettes and condoms don't mind if people say "fuck" in the comments section.  An easy to use Amazon portal would bring in money that Althouse could only dream of.  It's easy to imagine merchandise from the AoSHQ store taking off in Duck Dynasty fashion.

The thing is, Emily would even believe, in her own mind, that Ace was attractive and desirable.  Of course, this would just be a side effect of the success and money, but for a while, she would actually believe it.  So it would be true.  Kind of.

So, Ace would have Emily and we, the commenters, would have a functioning website with ampersands, bolding, italics, gifs and other such advanced shit.

The angels would sing and the world would be a happy place.

344 We say Congress has "the power of the purse."

But does it really?

Obama has the IRS, who collects the money, and the Treasury Deptartment, which holds the money.  All Congress does is say where it should go then via budgets, continuing resolutions, and legislation.

All Obama has to do is cut out the middle man (Congress) and he can fund pretty much anything he likes.

I think Congress will find it has a lot less power than it thinks if it crosses Obama.

*****

Why not?  As long as entropy in the universe as a whole increases, the 2nd Law isn't violated.

Example.  I built my own house.  Took a random pile of bricks, and created order out of them (a nice house).  But entropy in the universe as a whole still increased.

Why?

Because the decreased in entropy in creating the house was offset by a larger increase in entropy due to all the food that was digested in order to power my muscles that moved the bricks.

Hence, entropy as a whole increased.

360 Dean Koontz from Deeply Odd: "I sensed that opening this door would be as stupid as seeking the source of gas fumes in a dark basement by striking a match. Intuition is the highest form of knowledge. What we learn from others can be mistaught by those not a fraction as knowledgeable as they pretend or by those who are propagandists with agendas. We are born with intuition, however, which includes the natural law, a sense of right and wrong. A lot of people rebel so continually against natural law that not only does that part of their intuition atrophy but also every other aspect of it. They strike the match, open the door, give their money to an investment adviser named Slick, and trust that if they are really nice to the thug with the switchblade, he'll be nice to them." obama's foreign policy and our liberal progressive fellow citizens' thought processes when voting, in a nutshell
