Good News: Ratings for "Meet the Press" are Low and NBC Is Thinking About Canning David Gregory
Bad News: "Morning Joe" Scarborough and Mika Brezezezzzz Are Pitching Themselves As Replacements

— Ace

The Good Lord giveth, and then he taketh your breath away.

Fearless NBC News boss Deborah Turness is turning her attention to her troubled Sunday talk show, “Meet the Press” — asking staff to write a mission statement and explain what works and what doesn’t, The Post has learned.

...

With “Meet the Press” slipping in the ratings, WME’s Ari Emanuel has been making a serious pitch for his clients, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, co-hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” to take over, several sources said.

Oh, but they're not the only two possibilities. NBC is really thinking outside the box as far as hosts.

...

Turness could find a cure for the show’s blues by raiding ABC News’ “Good Morning America” host, George Stephanopoulos, whose contract expires in January, some TV insiders said.

...

The network has seen “Meet the Press” rack up some of the worst ratings in decades in recent months, though network insiders claim that both CBS and ABC engage in unfair ratings measures to boost their numbers.

Thanks to DrewM.

Secondly, what the hell is this, some bullshit corporate retreat?  The only times I've been asked to contribute a mission/vision statement have been a bullshit office "bonding" activities that are supposed to make us work as a cohesive group.  All   anyone ever does is write the most mind-numbing pap    they can think of that SOUNDS like what the boss wants to hear.  Lots of "synergy" and "growth" and "expanding to new horizons" and shit like that.

161 The chocolate-chip cookie celebrated its seventy-fifth birthday this year. Unlike the anonymous inventors of such American staples as the hot dog, the grilled-cheese sandwich, and the milkshake, the creator of the chocolate-chip cookie has always been known to us. Ruth Wakefield, who ran the popular Toll House restaurant in Whitman, Massachusetts, with her husband, Kenneth, from 1930 to 1967, brought the Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie into being in the late nineteen-thirties. The recipe, which has been tweaked over the ensuing decades, made its first appearance in print in the 1938 edition of Wakefield’s “Tried and True” cookbook. Created as an accompaniment to ice cream, the chocolate-chip cookie quickly became so celebrated that Marjorie Husted (a.k.a. Betty Crocker) featured it on her radio program. On March 20, 1939, Wakefield gave Nestlé the right to use her cookie recipe and the Toll House name. In a bargain that rivals Peter Minuit’s purchase of Manhattan, the price was a dollar—a dollar that Wakefield later said she never received (though she was reportedly given free chocolate for life and was also paid by Nestlé for work as a consultant).

196 This is why I disagree with Zombie's take on MSNBC, that it is an intentional clown show targeting conservatives. All of NBC is hopelessly liberal and their idea of fixing a problem is to substitute one liberal host with another. If you are going to stay left leaning at least give someone like Jake Tapper who has an occasional rational thought and seems to have at least one ball a try.

204 All kidding aside, nobody trusts the press anymore. They get lower ratings then just about anyone else in the public eye.

People don't trust them because the reporting is predictable and most often takes a liberal slant. If anything has exposed their dishonesty its been the Obama presidency.

I honestly don't know how you fix that. It is really analogous to moving the deck chairs on the Titanic. In the end it doesn't change the result.

Almost above everyone else, I blame the press for our almost total collapse and ruin as a nation. If they would have honestly scrutinized candidates and issues in pursuit of the truth, we would be a much different nation today.

260 @245: "He can interview Jooz and berate them for being evil blood-suckers." Didn't you hear? All public mockery of Pajama Boy is both misogynistic and anti-semitic. You asked for a miracle? I give you Dr. Jay Michaelson. From mediaite.com: “How could such a milquetoast political campaign attract so much vitriol?” Michaelson, a prolific author and religious studies educator who has taught at such prestigious institutions as New York University, Boston University, and Yale University, asked in the Jewish opinion journal, Forward. After asking this pointed question, Michaelson did not take long to answer it. He noted that “pajama boy” is, in reality, Ethan Krupp. Krupp is an Organizing for Action volunteer, a self-described “liberal f***,” and, above all, Jewish. Indeed, Krupp is “semiotically Jewish,” Michaelson wrote. “Even stereotypically so.” “In fact, Pajama Boy stands at a centuries-old nexus of anti-Semitism and misogyny,” he continued. “The Jew is the Other is the Effeminate is the Liberal. He is the urbanite, the parasite, the usurer, the lawyer. His effeminacy corrupts the Volk or the Heartland or the real American values. He wouldn’t know how to drive a pick-up truck if it was on cruise control. And he definitely votes for Obama.” “Whether or not the Pajama-Boy bashers are unconsciously anti-Semitic or not, I don’t know,” Michaelson charitably concludes. “That fascistic outlook has long been a part of far-right conservatism.”

Hah, I forgot that part.  Why does the Obama administration hate Jews?  (Just to be clear, they really do).

282 276 So, apparently according to the author of this particular bit of brilliance, Jewish men are effeminate. And we're the anti-Semites. Got it. You could tell that the moment he said (in essence) "Oh, he even looks like a Jew." Because that's the (unstated) premise. Everyone who made fun of PajamaBoy did so based on the fact he looked Jewish. But we're the bigots. --- I'll note that paragon of "progressive" thought SNL once did a fake gameshow during the late 80s called "Jew - Not A Jew".

288 Back to the original story: In all likelihood, David Gregory will be stuck as MTP host until the ship has sunk, and resting on the ocean floor. NBC has no where else to put him. I doubt he'd take a daily MSNBC show 'cause that'd be a huge step down; a reverse Chuck Todd sorta demotion. Maybe the Today show? But then he becomes a Willie Geist clone. The NBC News mothership doesn't need him, and they're looking to cut staff, not hire failed Sunday talk show hosts. He's stuck without a chair as soon as the music stops.

I thought it was overall a good movie too. Honestly the biggest thing that would have improved the movie is if they had kept the orcs as actors in costume instead of CG.

YES!   Gah.   That was one of the things that was so great about the LotR trilogy -- there was the perfect balance of CGI to prosthetics.  I know that CGi is probably cheaper in the long run, but it's just so OBVIOUS, and it really detracts from the overall story.   When Thranduil and legolas were interrogating that one captured orc, I was so glad that it was an actor in costume, not just some guy in a CGI suit.

Also, they didn't need to make Legolas's eyes look so elvish.  His regular old eyes were just fine.

334 Jake Tapper is so obviously the only rational choice for a Sunday morning show host that it frankly boggles my mind that he's been passed over again and again for the gig.  Remember: they gave the This Week job on ABC to Christiane Amanpour, a noted non-American who had never previously reported on DC politics and clearly didn't even fully understand U.S. political culture, over Tapper.  I have no way of really knowing, but it sure seems to me that it spurred his departure for CNN.  (Where he, not coincidentally, is currently hosting the only fucking show on the entire network that's worth checking out on a regular basis.)

I can only assume that the reason he was passed over was because he ruffled too many feathers by being the only friggin' non-Fox journo in White House press room to actually pose tough questions to Obama and his spokesman.  (It certainly isn't because he's disliked personally, at least from what I've heard secondhand -- haven't met the guy, but by all reports he's a chill dude.)

Maybe Meet the Press will do the smart thing and poach Tapper away from CNN, though they'll have to pay out the nose for the privilege.  On the downside, this would mean I might have to actually start watching NBC again, even if only for one show.
