Fred Phelps Socked With $9 Million Punitive Damages; Freaks Out During CNN Interview
— Ace

Nine large in punitive damages, on top of the $2.9 in compensatory damages.

Must watch video here of the jerkoff arguing his case.

He says the case is all about the "freedom of speech which our soldiers are supposedly fighting for overseas."

Um, if screaming at a soldier's funeral that "God hates Fags" and "God Got his Vengeance" is free speech, I'm not sure I want it anymore.

1 I think if you looked up "asshole" in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of "Reverend" Phelps.

2 The warrior who sacrificed his life will inevitably be enjoying the fruits of that sacrifice in the halls of eternity.

Phelps I imagine will be having a little less of a pleasurable time when it comes time to weigh the scales of his life.

4 Actually, I'm okay with the fags.  It's Fred Phelps I hate.  Why do you think I keep hitting Kansas with tornadoes?  Gotta work on my aim some more.

What a POS.

Break 'em.  Bankrupt 'em.  Take their "church" compound in Kansas and put 'em out on the street-then seize their cardboard boxes.  Get a lien against any future earnings (I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure if that's legal).  Make 'em lose any tax exempt status.

Frankly there just isn't any limit to the degree to which I want to see Phelps and his gang of inbred litigators persecuted.

7 A slimy, disgusting, lower-than-dirt apostate.  This man has no clue what Christianity is, or what its about...he is so morally and spiritually broken that there's no way of fixing him, save hospitalization.

God bless this gentle soul's family -- and may his son rest in peace.  I don't mind telling you guys I wept when I saw him on TV discussing his son's story...what a beautiful love this father has for his son, just beautiful.

8 Disrupting funerals isn't harassment?  Isn't that a crime?

I'm always amused and delighted to see an asshole whine when people treat him like the asshole he is.

It's quite possible that Phelps may win at the Supreme Court level, but as a Policeman friend of mine used to say, "Maybe we can't put you to jail but we can sure take you for a ride downtown".

Hope Reverend (sic) Phelps has a nice long ride.

11 You know what would be cool...a lightning bolt right to the forehead of this jackass. That would be some real Old Testament shit and get my agnostic ass into Church within minutes.

12 Yo Fred,

Just in case you're still confused, this isn't another biblical "trial of your faith", its a fucking warning.

13 if screaming at a soldier's funeral that "God hates Fags" and "God Got his Vengeance" is free speech

Only when Democrats do it - otherwise it's "hate speech" by those Godbotherers...

Fred Phelps complaining about someone "running their mouth".

This irony meter is pretty much finished.

Posted by: Dave in Texas at October 31, 2007 06:30 PM (Gnn85)

15 If that's free speech I get to show up at Fred's place every day with the Village People, Erasure, and that raining men song cranked on a car stereo.  Er, maybe someone else could do it.   What a tool.  That's like saying my freedom of assembly includes putting a bag of shit on your porch.

16 Look at the picture linked in this post over at IMOA. (http://www.imao.us/archives/009045.html) It puts that filth phelps in the proper perspective.

Posted by: Dogstar at October 31, 2007 07:55 PM (FgxdU)

19 So if the Phelps clan makes its money from lawsuits and the assets of its members, and all their assets are seized, are they eligible for welfare after the forfeiture? If they're not eligible for public assistance, does that mean these guys are going to get jobs? I can only imagine how that would go.

Phelps: You mean I have to work alternate Sundays? GOD HATES YOU!!!. So, can I start Monday?

Interviewer: Thanks, we'll let you know.

Posted by: bonhomme at October 31, 2007 09:35 PM (ibK+d)

20 I think Phelps would do well to paste this part of the Bible back into his limited collection of verses:

Matthew 6:14-15 "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

Posted by: bonhomme at October 31, 2007 09:59 PM (ibK+d)

21 It is extremely vulgar for him to suggest that those who advocate the killing and enslavement of others do the will of God.

And this is how conservatives will be benchmarked. I'm surprised Reid and Pelosi haven't begun hearings yet.

What a malevolent maggot.

Posted by: electron john at November 01, 2007 01:18 AM (ZvbcI)

Even Reid and Pelosi aren't stupid enough to go down that road. Phelps is a Democrat. Al Gore has been to his house and received his support.

Not saying those guys are Phelps fans - they're not, but Phelps is someone they really can't use to slur Republicans

Posted by: jmc at November 01, 2007 02:46 AM (td7uJ)

24 jmc, you don't really think the MSM is going to be deterred by the facts? To them, Phelps is a "conservative", and anyone who, say, has reservations about gay marriage (like me) will be tarred with his brush. Using Phelps as the prototypical conservative is like using a barking-mad truther moonbat as the prototypical liberal; but that's how the game is played. You can take that to the bank.

25 From the Baltimore Sun article -

University of Maryland law professor Mark Graber said the size of award, which included $8 million
in punitive damages, could have a chilling effect on speech.

I love that whole "Chilling effect" thing.

Posted by: GrumpyUnk at November 01, 2007 04:23 AM (lgYoI)

26 So when does Code Pinko get a judgement against them for being disruptive? Also, you can add the wackos that shout down guest speakers at universities.

The only ones that will win this game are the lawyers.

I'd rather have seen someone open a can of whoopass on that jerk, instead of the lawsuit.

28 If they could ban protests outside of abortion clinics, they can certainly ban this sort.

Note:  (again) "Westboro Baptist Church" is simply what they call their insular cult.  They have no affiliation with any of the Baptist Conferences.  They make their living provoking responses and then suing.  Their membership consists almost entirely of Herr Douchebag's extended family.

Posted by: Mark at November 01, 2007 06:19 AM (8nB5X)

31 CNN will dutifuly report the latest noose hanging (hoax) but they give short shrift to this absolute piece of crap whose conduct clearly violates "intentional infliction of emotional distress," a civil wrong.

Posted by: Roach at November 01, 2007 06:59 AM (6ek5y)

32 Phred is going to have to marry John Edwards to get this judgement off his back.

Posted by: Mark at November 01, 2007 08:10 AM (Sth9k)

33 I hope Phelps is the only tenant in the Hell he proscribes for so many others. He created it, let him live there. Actually, I think he just one more sad case of "look at Me!" I wonder if he can find enough gullible fools to refill his coffers. If the rest of that universe is any indication, he probably can. Preying (praying for ?)the fears and hopes of the poorly raised (minds, not cash), is a multi-million dollar media money maker opportunity for religion draped predators.

34 I'm a big juicy atheist.  I despise Christianity.

And yet, if an angel with a flaming sword were to come to earth, directly in front of Phelps, and say, "Speak no more, abomination of nature!" before bisecting him into two scorched heaps of ex-retard, then I would convert immediately.
