For Years, Mainstream Media Ignored Republicans' Claims That Obamacare Would Force Policy Terminations and Took Obama's Promise At Face Value, Says MRC Politico
— Ace

Huh?

Since the Affordable Healthcare Act was introduced in 2009, Republicans have dismissed President Barack Obama’s oft-repeated promise that anyone who liked their insurance plan would be able to keep it.

But was anyone paying attention?

For years, the media turned a blind eye to conservatives’ insistent warnings, often taking the president’s promise for granted. But this week, as health insurance cancellation letters started showing up in Americans’ mailboxes and the website roll-out flopped, the GOP message finally broke into the mainstream.

On Monday, NBC News reported that at least half of the approximately 14 million Americans with individual insurance are set to have their health plans shutdown by insurers under Obamacare. On Wednesday, the story was featured on the front page of some of the nation’s leading newspapers and was the main talking point for Republican lawmakers during the congressional hearing with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

For Republicans, it’s been a long time in coming.

...

For the last few years, the RNC, top conservative think tanks, and several influential right-leaning bloggers have been trying to convince Americans that Obama’s claim about being able to keep your plan was wrong. A few news outlets also cautioned against the president’s promise. As early as June 2009, the Associated Press wrote that “no president could guarantee such a pledge.”

But for the most part, the mainstream media failed to aggressively pursue the story, taking Obama’s claim at face value without testing it against the facts.

49 This is why I have always wondered why the R's don't use this tactic:

Spell it out plainly, for all the LIVs and naysayers to see, and say, "this [insert consequence] is what will happen as a result of [insert Dem stupidity]."  Get unified and coordinate the message so that every R says it every time a microphone is in front of them.  THIS is what will happen when the Dems do THIS.  Lay out the consequences and when they come to fruition, maybe, just maybe people will start to wake up.

This needs to be a coordinated message.  But then again, we need a better batch of R's....

You mean reality intruded into the artificial media coverup bubble? Democrat monopoly on microphones is the problem here folks. "Printers are educated in the Belief, that when Men differ in Opinion, both sides ought equally to have the Advantage of being heard by the Public; and that when Truth and Error have fair Play, the former is always an overmatch for the latter: Hence [printers] cheerfully serve all contending Writers that pay them well, without regarding on which side they are of the Question in Dispute." --Benjamin Franklin--

By the way, Republicans are once again failing to capitalize on the fact that right up until the Shutdown and Debt Ceiling they took a stand against Obamacare because they knew it would hurt Americans.

They are allowing Democrats to once again seize and distort the messaging.

They haven't learned that people simply hating the other guys doesn't win elections.

There is zero consistency in the messaging.

It is early days for the ACA and we should reserve judgment about whether this legislation was just too big and complicated a mess to implement. But, surely, SOMEONE–maybe many people–should be fired for these opening pratfalls. And we should also be able to get some of our money back from the private contractors who failed to implement the exchanges.Notice that Joe Klein casts blame for the debacle, not on Obama's leadership, but his failure to fire somebody.Khan: Kirk? 174 A further update from single payer Ontario Canada. The government has actively restricted access to doctors for decades by limiting the number of patients any doctor gets paid to see, and restricting the number of med students allowed to graduate each year. All universities are public so they have total control. Yesterday another common procedure was been added to the restricted list. Less funding and longer wait times for cataract surgery, because vision is obviously wasted on old people.

"YES! Single payer!

Run by the very same fuck ups that 404Care is run by!"

Try to take single payer away from the Tea Party members who are on Medicare.

Medicare automatically pays all providers in less than 30 days (and most times much quicker than that) by design.  It is so there are no complaints from users that they are denied service because of slow payment.

Medicare administrators don't care that the fraud and abuse rate is well over 20% (just what they admit to and far below what it actually is).  It's not their money.  Just pay whatever it is because that's the easiest way.

How can you compete with that?

This is peanuts compared to the employer mandate, which will cost up to 70% of those with employer provided health care their policies. More money out of pocket, crappier coverage, and so expensive that they will not be able to afford to even go to the doctor.

As someone pointed out in the previous thread, it's not a matter of if Obamacare fails, it's a matter of when, and 'when' is probably not far off in the future. If people don't sign up in the numbers needed, premiums are going to skyrocket for those that did sign up, making it even more expensive, and forcing even more people out of the health care exchanges.

Lather, rinse, repeat until the whole thing collapses.

The GOP should not lift a finger to help the dems dig out of this mess.

Obama's taking heat for lying, but that doesn't mean we're winning.

This thing can go either way. People are pissed that coverage is going to cost more, so the democrats are going to come back with plan of single payer.

This solves the cost problem, because under single payer, someone else pays for you. Or the government just prints the money. No pain and everyone gets everything.

And the conservative plan?

(crickets)

Welcome to single payer.

233 The cure to healthcare insurance coverage is free markets and tort reform. Maybe a super-doctor-certification system so there aren't a lot of incompetents running around.

The cost of doctors, anesthesia, hospital stay, operating room and all the various sundry accompaniments has gotten and remains ridiculously steep. My son went for ACL tear knee surgery -- orthoscopic -- in 2003 and I expected to hear that the cost of day surgery was a managable, what, $7,500?   Nope. Everything totaled $35,000.  That was for day surgery, no overnight stay.

But it was the system and the insurance/medicaid/medicare game and the way it's played that helps to enable the price gouging.

Speaking of preparing for the worse  and  TV and hilarity ,  I was watching Doomsday Preppers  and they had a family that  lived in  Oregon that had the nicest compound you have seen and prepped to the max in supplies , ammo , water , etc.      In this episode they  were showing the father turning an older SUV into an armored vehicle.   During the filming,  a  rather large forest fire was noticed in the distance and appeared moving towards them.

You have never seen such a well prepared prepper familiy on paper  be the least prepared for an actual event.   They were running around with their heads cut off.   The mother and daughter were crying and consoling themselves and the father had no clue as to what to do.   They finally hitched up their trailer and bugged out.     The  wind and thus the fire  subsequently  switched directions and they authorities got it under control.    Now they know what they should have been prepping for.   Best laid plans and all.

Two year exclusion cap. Same as employer supplied insurance.

276 So, someone walks in with cancer and doesn't have insurance. The plan is to tell them there is a two year wait and go sit on the steps of the hospital and die. As you well know, insurance is not treatment, and vice versa, but that's not important to the argument which is; without an exclusion period, which is present in nearly all (possibly all) employer-based insurance, no one would buy catastrophic insurance until they needed it. So, if you are going to allow preexisting condition expenses to be paid from day one, you might as well go single payer, because there will be no such thing as private sector medical insurance anyway.

277 So, someone walks in with cancer and doesn't have insurance. The plan is to tell them there is a two year wait and go sit on the steps of the hospital and die.

In Canada, even if you have their single payer, there's still a two year wait and you die.

Perhaps you've forgotten the news story from a couple years ago about the Canadian who was diagnosed with a brain tumor that would kill him in 9mo, and was put on a 2 year waiting list for surgery.  He came here and had his surgery within weeks.

THAT is single payer.

The logic behind the plan is that rapidly exploding health costs are driven partly by over consumption of health-care services by Americans who have little skin in the game thanks to low co-pays and deductibles. The goal is to tax the most generous Cadillac plans to drive people toward plans that make them contribute more. 300 Jwest - deregulating the industry will do a lot to bring costs under control. Insurance is needed now because if you get really sick it's likely to be financially ruinous. Why wasn't this the case forty years ago? Added technology should push prices down as it has a deflationary impact. It doesn't. Why? Why does an Arizona hospital charge 60 grand for a dose of scorpion anti-venom that's a hundred bucks over the counter in Mexico? The medical industry is not a free market. If we made it so people would be shocked at how much it got better and cheaper.

"So you want the taxpayers to cover the big stuff. That's not the capitalism I think you're looking for. "

I'm putting forth a deal that I think democrats would be forced  to take.

In the catastrophic category, the vast majority is already single payer.  Most people requiring extensive treatment are over 65 and on Medicare.  The next biggest group is the poor being paid for by Medicaid.  After that, you've got the veterans being paid by the VA.

Way down on the list is people like  us.    On the rare occasion that working age people come to need the high dollar services in the catastrophic range, we now rely on private insurance.

If you only bought a catastrophic policy now (assuming you are under 65 and in reasonably good health), the policy would be very cheap.  That's because very few of us ever use the benefits.

What I'm suggesting is that we give up this tiny slice of the  market to gain a free market in everyday medical care.

Is that so hard to understand?

This is a free market.  People who can afford better medical care should be entitled to purchase it where and when they please.  Health care should not be exempt from capitalism.  Instead of careening down the road to socialism and bankruptcy, we should be supporting a market system that allows all to exercise their own health care choices.

310  " In the health savings accounts don't you usually have a catastrophic plan or a stop loss policy for that heart transplant Jwest wants to get."

That's correct.

With an HSA,  it is used for everyday, foreseeable expenses.  This includes checkups, minor illness, broken arm, etc.

Since almost everyone's HSA wouldn't have enough money to cover a catastrophic event, either a private catastrophic policy or a single payer plan is needed to supplement it.

The vast majority of people being treated now for catastrophic illness are being covered by government run, single payer - Medicare, Medicaid and VA.

A tiny percentage, those who get a severe illness early in life or those who are involved in an accident and under 65 use private insurance.

Posted by: jwest at October 31, 2013 06:35 AM (u2a4R)

Posted by: toby928 responds a hundred comments late at October 31, 2013 07:18 AM (QupBk)

315 We are stuck with the public wanting insurance coverage of pre-existing conditions. Obamacare completely hoses the private health insurance system to accomplish that. Here is the compromise for a post-Obamacare solution: extend Medicare to cover the health treatment of pre-existing conditions. The private healthcare market can go back to providing actual insurance, which will probably wind up being cheaper. These people are uninsurable, and there is no market solution, so there is a pretty decent argument to be made that extending the social safety net in that area. I don't like it either, but that is the best we might be able to achieve at this point with this electorate.
