BIDEN: I PROPOSE A GLOBAL TAX
— Ace

...on manufacturing.

Supposedly this helps America, he says. Because, see, it would create a global minimum tax, right? And then that helps America, which apparently is determined to have high taxes on business.

People who are not stupid recognize this as insane.

"We want to create (what's called) a global minimum tax, because American taxpayers shouldn't be providing a larger subsidy for investing abroad than investing at home," Biden said at a campaign event.

Ah yes, every new tax, and every news Global Tax Authority, is a big boon to the American taxpayer.

Your Mouth

Kinda just got away from me at the end there.

Gee, Maybe We Could Do Something About This Instead. On Sunday, Japan's cutting of the corporate tax rate to 38.8% becomes operative law.

On that day, we become the country with the world's highest corporate tax rates, at 39.2%.

So Biden's proposal is that we create a new One World Government-type body to levy higher taxes on the world.

And not cut our own taxes on the production of goods.

Because that's what the Republicans would want.

So we can't do that. No, that means we're going to put America, for the first time in its history, under a foreign body's control, and further, we'll actually be taking the lead in reducing world wealth.

Erg, how are we "paying a subsidy" for investing abroad?

Also how does he intend to enforce this anyway?  The UN can't stop people from genocide, enforcing a "Global Minimum tax" would be even harder.

Finally, Gov't picking winners and losers again, build up the high tech bubble now with stupid tax credits only to have it burst later.  How about we just lower them across the board?

Ace,

The problem is though that Biden is (in his own stupid way) touching upon various problems that we have to cope with.  Certain countries (China!) cheat.  So this sounds good to the voters (and the union thugs.)

Of course I'd rather solve the problem with more free market labor over here and perhaps some tariffs to boot, I'd have to really think about the bigger picture before I proposed anything specific.

A global tax is a stupid Rawlsian way to level the playing field in which everybody has to drop to the least advantages person's (or country's) level and sacrifice their advantages, rather than focusing on the least advantages strenghts to build them up.

There's a chance we're taking
We're taking our whole lives
It's true, we'll make a brighter day
Just you and me

Give them your heart
And you will see that someone cares
'Cause you know that they can't feed them all
Then I read the paper
And it said that children die
And it shows that soon can we work hard

We are the world, we are the children
We are the one to make a brighter day
So let's start giving
But there's a chance we're taking
We're taking our whole lives
It's true, we'll make a brighter day

I have to ask (and I would like to do an essay on this): Are we conservatives merely "Dying Gauls?" I am referring to the sculpture of the noble, dying warrior with a rope around his neck placed there by his conquerors, and breathing his last breath. Look it up. It's a marvelous work of art. I fear that we conservatives are a dying breed of true freedom lovers, but we are going to be overcome by forces beyond our ability to resist. Is it too late to bring the beast of global tyranny to heel? I read stuff like this coming from the likes of Joe Biden, and I wonder if I am, like the courageous Gaul, reacting to weapons of destruction that will claim my spirit before I even know they have been unleashed upon me. When my neighbor begs for the fetters of slavery and counts his capitulation as virtue, is there anywhere to turn except to face the enemy and die in one last rage of conscience?

291 Coincidentally, chances that they're planning to replace Biden on the ticket at the last minute went up today. It's not a bad "strategy," as it were, we can only hope it's too little, too late.

If Biden doesn't end up "accidentally" tripping out an    Air Force One    airlock between now and November, I'll eat my hat.

The man genuinely has no filter.  None.  I mean, this,     from just last night:

Vice President Joe Biden offered a frank assessment of his career in remarks at a Democratic fundraiser in Chicago Thursday night. According to a White House pool report, Biden, surrounded by the city’s movers and shakers, praised former Mayor Richard M. Daley and then said: “I never had an interest in being a mayor ’cause that’s a real job. You have to produce. That’s why I was able to be a senator for 36 years.”

*rubbing temples*   My brain.  It aches.

ChristyBlinky, you'd think if Obama really wanted to get elected he'd lock Biden in a closet until November.

As someone who wants to see Obama defeated, I would contribute massive amounts of cash to the DNC if they could guarantee my money only went towards Biden appearances. Ideally an open, unscripted forum.........or Harry Reid's Cowboy Poet Festival.

Heinz Co. had a tomato-processing factory in Egypt. ....You know, John Kerry's wife's Heinz Co.?

Last year, when things got crazy in Egypt because of that wonderful 'Arab Spring'.....the 200 or so employees of that Heinz factory in Egypt, were evac'd out of there....courtesy of US taxpayers.

I think Biden has a good idea on this and if I was President, I would impose a global tax on manufacturing immediately.

However…

My tax would be on all manufacturing in every country except the U.S. and might better be described as a “tribute” or “letting us wet our beaks”.  Why would every other country’s manufacturing base pay us this money?  Well, we would need to take the attitude that since we pay for the world’s strongest military, we’re simply charging for the protection we offer.

302....If they were American citizens, the embassy would have helped them even if it wasn't an American Corp.

Right. That's how it starts, isn't it? .....We put in an Embassy somewhere. Then, here come the US Corporations, feeling like it is 'safe' to put in a factory and take advantage of all that cheap labor. .....Because they know that the US military will come to  their  aid, if 'shit gets real'.

Then, for logistics purposes....we have to have a base nearby. ....And on and on it goes.

I know I am starting to sound like a Libertarian here. ....But we're broke, dammit. ....And I don't see things getting any better here, as long as it is so damn expensive to create jobs here.

If Corporations were too afraid to invest their capital in these third world shitholes.....then, perhaps they would see the wisdom in bringing their manufacturing back home.

Wheatie, the primary reason that business locates either offshore or in a foreign country is because THAT is the only way they can continue to do business. Can't tax and regulate them into oblivion and expect to see them prosper.

Not even going to post the solution, it's a no brainer.

OK, what’s wrong with this picture: Erskine Bowles (liberal), Alan Simpson (RINO), and Charlie Rose  (uber-liberal) are sitting together discussing the economy and the debt and MAKING SENSE!! This is so WRONG I’m convinced I’ve fallen asleep on the couch and am having a nightmare. So I get up, hit the record button and go to bed.

After my morning caffeine and nicotine I decide to replay last night’s terror and bring some semblance of sanity to my little world. WRONG !! They’re still saying the same things and those things still make sense. What are they saying you ask? Try this:

1)      The primary threat to America is the uncontrolled debt.

2)      The primary driver of debt is entitlements – primarily health care entitlements and Obamacare is  not just not a cure-all it is the disease run rampant

3)      More revenue is not the answer. Neither is cutting the size of government nor revamping entitlement programs. All of these things are necessary – beginning with trashing the tax code.

4)      Limited (and very modest) tax increases combined with the removal of cumbersome, unfair, and unnecessary tax avoidance laws would solve the revenue issue (I listened with jaw agape while all agreed that most of the ‘special’ laws had been passed so that some one or several politicians could get re-elected.)

5)      Tort reform of malpractice and product liability (pharmaceutical) laws combined with reducing medicare/caid burdens, tighter enforcement of fraud, and restricting benefits to deny or substantially reduce their availability  to drug/alcohol/nicotine/food addicts and others who choose an at risk life-style.

6)      Social security retirement raised to 68, no cost-of-living increases for government employees retiring early (including congress-critters), make Social Security pay for itself by increasing tax and reducing benefits, and reducing the bureaucratic burdens on businesses.

And all of that was just for starters. So ….. now I’m going to have to go read the damned Simpson/Bowles report. Up until now I’d done my best to ignore it because I just KNEW nothing they might produce would make sense.

It might be time to look up recipes for crow

308....Irongrampa.

I agree. ....But you left out the Unions in that lethal equation of  'why jobs leave'.

I would suggest, as a way of offering a solution....that a National Right to Work Law be passed  + eliminate the Minimum Wage entirely + Lower Corp Rate to 10%. ....But then, what are the chances of that happening?

Under the present conditions, nil. If and when the relationship between labor and management ceases to be an adversarial one, then improvement can happen.

Ayn Rand touched on something in Atlas Shrugged--the premise of "rational self interest" being the guiding principle of business.  Of, course, this is intended to be practiced in a legal, moral and ethical manner--which shouldn't even need to be a caveat.  It cannot work any other way.
