Flashback: In 2008, The New York Times Claimed Obama's Admitted Drug Use Was Probably Exaggerated For Effect
— Ace

Nice piece from Slate, of all places.

Factually, I mean. Let's just say I think the blogger here is a tad crabbed in what conclusions he's willing to draw; the words "Gee, sure seems like the New York Times was presenting its best spin on its product!" don't cross his lips.

Still, he got the fact of it. We can add in our own conclusions.

Here's the New York Times, quoting a passage from Obama's own book, describing how he's about to shoot up... heroin.

Yes, heroin. (As everyone on the right is now saying: My God, how did we not read this book?)

“Junkie. Pothead. That’s where I’d been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man,” he penned in the memoir.

…

Mr. Obama describes a scene in that period where, in the meat freezer of a deli, he watched someone named Micky — “my potential initiator” — pull out “the needle and the tubing,” apparently to shoot up heroin. Alarmed, Mr. Obama wrote that he imagined how an air bubble could kill him.

Well, a presidential candidate who smokes pot, did "a little blow," and was one plunge away from shooting up heroin.

That's somethin'.

But the Times didn't think so.

The Times spun this to readers who might be a little alarmed by the Junkie President, to reassure him, "Don't sweat it, he's just lying. He lies a lot."

Mr. Obama’s account of his younger self and drugs, though, significantly differs from the recollections of others who do not recall his drug use. That could suggest he was so private about his usage that few people were aware of it, that the memories of those who knew him decades ago are fuzzy or rosier out of a desire to protect him, or that he added some writerly touches in his memoir to make the challenges he overcame seem more dramatic.

In more than three dozen interviews, friends, classmates and mentors from his high school and Occidental recalled Mr. Obama as being grounded, motivated and poised, someone who did not appear to be grappling with any drug problems and seemed to dabble only with marijuana.

Except... he says he did "a little blow."

That's one witness, right? The man himself writing his first autobiography?!

But the Times talked to three dozen "friends" and classmates, and they weren't willing to rat on him, so they actually claimed he was lying in his book.

I guess they never spoke to the old Choom Gang, huh?

Who the hell did they speak to? Bill Ayers?

Is the Times now willing to correct this article?

27 As for the Times coverage, Richard Stevenson, political editor of The
New York Times, emailed: “Since the very first stirrings of the 2008
campaign, The Times has exhaustively and aggressively covered nearly
every aspect of Barack Obama’s story. To suggest that we’ve pulled our
punches or tilted coverage in his favor or against his opponents just is
not supported by the facts.…

So why did it take 4 years to find out about the "Choom Gang" and that Obama thanked his drug dealer in his yearbook ? Which drugs did he use ?

We still have no idea what his college transcripts look like.

34 Can someone help me understand what a "would-be black man" is? I always took "would-be" to indicate something that would have happened had it not been thwarted, like a "would-be killer" in a book or movie stopped at the last moment by the hero/heroin. In this context, "would-be black man" makes not a damn bit of sense.

I guess it's valuable to document the more egregious examples and it certainly motivates me to continue to work to see them frustrated on election day. But sometimes, it's just all so....tiresome. One wonders if they ever, for one second, ask themselves, "would we cover it this way if this were a Republican?" I can't imagine they have. Might result in painful insights into their own perfidy and double dealing from a position of responsibility as journalists.

Eh, that depends.  I've started looking at "race" (used losely here) as more of a culture thing.  So a "would-be black man" is someone who would dive straight into what we consider largely "Black culture" (broadly speaking, more accurately it would likely be called "gang culture" or "urban black culture" but based on the context, Obama is using shorthand.)

Racist as it may sound (and it's not that's the oddity of it because it's not, it's a cultural critique.)  The most successful African-Americans I know (and I know some quite successful ones, and a few who are closer to my age but on their way towards being wildly successful, if attending a top 10 Med school is an indication) tend to eschew  the aspects of this culture.  The dress nicely, speak better English than I do and work there asses off.  I could give a long list of people I know who are white, took the exact opposite approach are worse off by yards.

Random questions about no one in particular…

If a relatively young person of small stature spends 17 years in prison (6205 days), what would a reasonable estimate be of how many times he was pounded in the ass versus how many blowjobs he had to give?  Are there statistics or national averages for this type of calculation?

Are there social websites dedicated to convicts who want to keep up with their “prison bitches” after they are released?

The "He lies a lot." theme is something that has been said could really resonate with women, for whom having the important men in their lives lying to them can be a bit of a sore spot, to say the least. There's ample video and audio of Obama himself, to prove his constant lies beyond a shadow of a doubt.

But will THIS Republican campaign commit suicide, just as the last on did, by being afraid of being called "racist" with every criticism they might throw at their competition? Maybe Romney's smarter than that. If he's got anything going for him, above all else, it appears to be competence.

Going back to yesterday's topic...

Women look at Obama and see a...

WAITAMINUTE, now

Sarah Palin said it better 4 years ago than I can: "My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of "personal discovery." This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer."

Women see a navel gazer when they look at Obama; a contemplative do-nothing; a delta male.

Mitt Romney is the diametric opposite of Barack Obama. And women (and men) can see it plain as day.

I'm glad someone agrees! Yeah the problem is when people try to calle it into "Race" rather than "culture" it can't be critiqued (which I think is the goal actually, because then "Victim is me!").  They aren't entirely inseperable, but I'd say they mostly are. (I allow for the fact that some people may treat you better/worse because of your race and that does have an effect, but largely it can be overcome. It's more of a distraction in this context, so don't beat me up about "how much" or "why."  It's miniscule, but I'll accept reasonable arguments for it.)  I find it remarkely stupid that when I say "Black urban culture has severe problems like X, Y, Z" (which FWIW are often problems and culture adopted by white urbanites) I get called "racist."  So I reset: "Young Urban Culture..." RACIST! since I guess cities are only black people?  Yeah, stupid.

I like to say "I'm not a racist, I'm an economic elitist."

Was it Rev. Al or Jesse J. who made the quote about looking behind him, seeing a white mean and feeling relieved?  Because I tend to look behind myself, and look at clothing.  If you're in a suite, I don't care if you're White, black, red, or blue, I feel much more releaved then if you're dressed like Snoop Dogg.

In the context of the book–which the story of how a fucked-in-the-head white guy with an effectively imaginary African father and a few delusions learned to falsely pass for an American black man—it makes perfect sense.

That really is what it's about. Face-value, no-analysis, what-it-fucking-says ABOUT. You guys really should have read it.

It's a fascinating pile of crap. The stories in it are all ridiculously fake, but they're also perfectly revealing, because Obama's not smart enough to invent an "Obama" character who doesn't reveal the real Obama. Even "Obama" can't resist bragging—and his favorite way to brag is by showing real insight into the author.

I think Barky already  knows  that he is a total fraud, CharlieB.

So his biggest fear must surely be...that he will be exposed. ....And exposed in such a big way, that there is no way for him to wriggle out of it or spin it away.

Which is why my most fervent hope, is that he will  finally  be  vetted and exposed  for  the  fraud  that  he is......and becomes a  huge  embarrassment  for  the  Dems.

224 Flashback to Carter era policies and a threat to Navy combat readiness...

This from The Heritage Foundation:

The year was 1979. America’s military had emerged from the Vietnam War earlier in the decade and was now facing sizable and significant budget cuts.Capt. Tom Shanahan, commanding officer of the USS Canisteo, had just returned from the Mediterranean Sea and was now leading an overhaul of his fleet supply ship. Over the course of 10 months, the crew assigned to the Canisteo gradually disappeared, relocated by the Navy to other assignments. Those personnel cuts eventually left Shanahan with so few men that he couldn’t take his ship to sea.
“Little by little, they stripped us of a lot of the people we had, key people,” Shanahan recounted recently. “By the time we were ready to get underway from the shipyard and go back to Norfolk, we didn’t have enough people. We didn’t have enough people in any of the departments, but mainly we didn’t have enough people in the engine room.”

Shanahan took the bold step of refusing to certify his ship as seaworthy He warned his superiors long before his readiness reports. Yet when he deemed his warship not ready for combat, it came as a surprise to many in the military.

227 "In more than three dozen interviews, friends, classmates and mentors from his high school and Occidental recalled Mr. Obama as being grounded, motivated and poised, someone who did not appear to be grappling with any drug problems and seemed to dabble only with marijuana."

Of course they couldn't find anybody to support it: they've all seen how the FBI, the IRS, Homeland Security, and a gazillion Op-Research guys will climb all over you and up your asshole if you utter anything negative about NOTUS (Narcissist Of The US).

"Classmate": well, he was three years ahead of me, I think I saw him one time sitting on a bench smoking a cigarette. NYT: did you ever see him doing heroin? "Classmate": Lord no, I didn't hang with that crowd NYT (making note): no one saw Obama doing heroin
