Flashback: In 2004, Al Franken, Who Would Later Be Elected Senator With No Media Outrage, Body-Slammed (For Real) a Protester at a Howard Dean Rally
— Ace

The progressives didn't defend Franken's body-slamming of a peaceable man for a simple reason: They didn't have to. The media never brought it up.

Strange that behavior that is not only non-objectionable for a progressive but also not even worth remark is a Five Alarm Fire of moral panic when a conservative does it.

Ann Althouse has some interesting thoughts on masculinity and the urge to dominate. She asks -- I think; I don't want to misinterpret her -- if that leftwing Guardian reporter's actions are not a "toxic masculinity" driven form of attempted dominance, but using the script preferred by weaker men.

Note that that wouldn't really change the legal or ethical calculus here, I don't think -- even though weaker people might have the same drive to dominate as stronger people, and may employ different techniques of achieving it, that doesn't change the fact that violence is strictly forbidden, and for good reason.

I do think it's an interesting insight nevertheless.

Thanks to Evil Blogger Lady (@MsELB.

Corrected: It happened in 2004, not 2000. One's memory begins to slip as one reaches the early middle age of 29.

19 Althouse asks a pretty good point here "How hard would the body slam need to be before you'd prefer to get charged with a crime?" The need to utterly expunge violence from culture is going too far. I don't like gangs roaming the streets or shoot-outs, but a bout of fists when someone goes too far probably should come back in vogue. She's also right when she says "But narrating the audio, dropping it on line, going to the police, and taking names for litigation purposes is also a form of dominance." It is. Its violence at a feminine level, rather than masculine. Its using other people's strength and authority to punish someone rather than your own.

44 So Hillary was wearing her dark blue sunglasses again yesterday at the Memorial Day parade -- even though it was overcast, chilly, and intermittently raining at the parade. There was some talk last fall (after Hillary's collapse on a day she was wearing those same blue glasses at the 9/11 ceremony) that those are anti-seizure glasses, but of course, Hillary's defenders said that was not true. But it does make one curious about why Hillary would be wearing those dark blue glasses on an overcast, rainy day in NY. They're obviously not being used for sun protection, so what other kind of eye protection does Hillary need? (Other than covered mirrors, of course).

That one wasn't a "body slam," it was a fall to the ground while struggling over the mic or phone.

They don't even like football players to "body slam" even in full equipment.

187 Didn't the homo WaPo reporter tell Michelle Fields that Lebowski "threw you down" and we spent weeks arguing over it only to have video surface of Lebowski gently grabbing her arm to pull her away from Trump since she wasn't supposed to be there? Isn't there an old journalist rule that the reporter isn't supposed to be part of the story? Perhaps the problem today is that the media makes itself part of the story. The leaker problem is part of that because the reporter repeating the leak is serving as the judge of the veracity of the leak. Instead he is supposed to provide information to the reader to allow the reader to corroborate the story.

191 There's also the urge to be dominated (or at least follow) - it's in our DNA and culture. Only 15% of US men are over six feet tall yet about 60% of male CEO's are over six feet and the percentage of male managers over six feet tall is much higher than 15%. The book "Blink" and many other sources discuss this bias toward tall (generally bigger) men. Most Presidents and a large number of Senators over the past 50 years have been/are over six feet tall.

210 I work to stay out of physical confrontations, always have since my teen years.  I'm sure some people have taken this to mean I'm averse in some way to that kind of thing, and I suppose so in that I acknowledge that it usually leads to nothing good.
BUT the real reason I don't let myself go there is what I know about myself, and that is once I get intentionally hit, there is a switch in me that flips and I don't stop.  I don't like it, so I make sure and stay away from it.

Probably the last fight I was in was some stupid bar fight in college that ended up in a parking lot, and I ended up paired with someone way bigger than me. (I'm 6'2, so this guy was BIG) As he was about to really get me, I got him in a bear hug to protect my face, and we went down to the ground, him on top.  I knew I was in trouble, luckily (for me) I got ahold of a good fist-sized rock and just beat the back of his head with it til his blood started to drip on my face.  By then he was ready to let go, and I had regained enough sense that I knew it was best to get to my car and get out of there pronto.

that's where these things go, that's when I learned to stay out of situations where they might happen.

231 Australian Morons foiled a convenience store robbery and got the whole thing on video. Two Morons, two robbers. One Moron was recording a video of the other trying to fix a busted flip-flop, when they realized that a car had pulled up and the two men in the car had put masks over their faces. So the flip-flop Moron ran up to the car, pulled out the ignition key, and threw it down a grate. The robbers freaked out when they couldn't drive away and ran off on foot. The video went viral, and the Morons were interviewed on an Australian TV show. A show host asked the Morons if they work out. "The only gym I go to is Jim Beam," James answered with a nod to the Kentucky whiskey. A police spokesman also had a great comment on this: "This incident was resolved without injuries, but we would urge members of the public contact police rather than confront offenders," he said. "Taking the keys from the ignition would have been enough to slow the offenders down, jumping in the car was not needed. "Police are specially trained to respond to these situations, they have tasers, capsicum spray and guns. "A gentleman with a busted thong just doesn't have the same capabilities." http://bit.ly/2rS24zZ http://bit.ly/2sb34wt

236 In 2012, Obama's Justice Department pursued an investigation into the source behind New York Times reporter David Sanger's story about the Stuxnet computer virus's use against the Iranian nuclear program.

That investigation, spearheaded by current Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, found that former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff James Cartwright, who had been dubbed "Obama's General," was behind the leak and later lied to the FBI about it. Obama pardoned Cartwright earlier this year.

315 Word is that Trump made it clear to Merkel that he was going to have the US pull out of the Paris Accord, which was a planned-for gelding of the US on the way to Globalization. Do foreigners like Merkel really believe that "climate change" is the biggest problem faced by humanity? Hilarity will certainly ensue!

(3) Her friend lied to the ACT UP guy because he didn't want to hurt his feelings any more than they already were.

366 352 I just watched the video of John Sununu destroying Alison Camerota on CNN. I'm still wiping tears from my eyes. He made her look like a braying jackass. She was so dumbfounded she actually couldn't speak. Comedy gold. Posted by: Marcus T at May 30, 2017 03:37 PM (xWT2T) ---------- It was a thing of beauty. Pro tip from Sununu to R's: Don't buy into the false narrative and call out the press.

368 The Left are masters at "taking one for the team" -- doing some awful thing in order to goad an over-reaction from their enemies, so the other lefties can then use the over-reaction as a tool to destroy the power structure. That's what this Guardian reporter did -- he intentionally trespassed, intentionally menaced, intentionally tried to enrage, intentionally broke all sorts of rules and laws concerning decent behavior, for the very reason of trying to goad the Republican into pushing back. The Guardian reporter went in there hoping to get bodyslammed or punched - - in fact, that was the ONLY reason he went into that off-limits room without permission. he was trying to create a scandal out of thin air. And -- as always - it worked. This is the exact strategy that the left has been utilizing since the '60s in regards to police, with ever-escalating use of it in recent years: trying to goad the police into an over-reaction, so that the mob can then scream "Police violence!" They do it at nearly every protest nowadays. Big city cops are mostly trained to "not react," so the strategy is getting less and less effective in big cites, but provincial cops are still naive and still fall for it. It does take a certain kind of masochistic "bravery" of a sort to voluntarily try to get oneself injured "for the cause," but it's not as "brave" as it seems because the lefties know that their opponents aren't going to go Full Attack on them. Also, the leftists are very good at "soccer injuries" - i.e. over-reacting to make a thrust from a police-baton or a Republican pushing a reporter away seem like a huge violent assault.

376 Re the Paris accord. I don't want Trump to pull out of it. I wan him to submit it to the senate as a treaty and watch senators scurry for cover. It would probably go down 90-10. Posted by: WisRich at May 30, 2017 03:37 PM (hdpay) Yeah, I guess we're still not fully resolved to address reality as it is, and are still at times living as if the Republican Party of 2017 is the same as the Republican Party of, say, pre-2010. It's not. I wouldn't put it past them to approve this thing, because they either A. Believe in Globull Warmening b.s, or B. Want to stick it to Trump, or C. Both.

382 Historical aside: Old-time bareknuckled boxers were allowed to pick up and then slam/throw their opponents to the ground--which was ground--hard dirt with maybe sawdust--and not canvas. It was the boxers themselves who demanded this practice be disallowed because so many fighters were being seriously hurt and permanently crippled. Audiences loved it. What happened to that reporter was not a body slam.

Posted by: troyriser at May 30, 2017 11:08 AM (Fw5cQ)

383 "War is not the answer..." I'm afraid that sometimes it is. For example, if the question is, "what term describes two nations vying for control of each other's territory via open combat?" the best answer would be "War." War is often the answer. It really depends upon the question.

384 Zombie, the problem is many of us don't give two fucks anymore. They are gonna set us up and lie and hit us and expect no response anyway, so worrying about their trap is past the grave whistling. No more. No fuckng more. 385 And by the way: does anyone who voted for Trump care about the MSM and their "outrage" anymore? I mean, anyone at all? The media has become Wrongway Peachfuzz to most of us. If they say Up, we say Down. That is, if we even read or listen to them. I go to huge lengths to not even click on links to most of them. The faster they go out of business, the better. Speaking of which, any guess as to whether a true conservative/libertarian outlet will replace Murdoch's joke "news" network?

Posted by: RobM1981 at May 30, 2017 11:12 AM (VVBN7)

386 Right on RobM1981. I didn't vote for Trump (didn't vote for POTUS at all, being a Masshole and all it didn't matter) and I don't listen to nor care about the MSM outrage of the minute. Not least of which because we most often learn that the outrage is based on falsehoods. Very much analogous to the 'boy who cried wolf' story: they keep telling me stuff that turns out not to be true or it is sourced from someone anonymous or such. See: the outrage story about the Portland murderer, blaming Trump's 'rhetoric', and the subsequently reported truth that he was a Bernie/Stein supporter. And they still want to blame Trump for this mentally ill dirtbag's actions. As we say in Beantown: fuck you, you fucking fuck.

387 Dems cowed Republicans into not criticizing Obama for fear of being called racists. This extended to not criticizing his naive and incompetent decision making, including setting the mideast on fire. Any criticism was likened to calling for a lynching. Notice a lack of reciprocity? Every conservative and Republican needs to understand this is the way the left always works. You can't reason or negotiate with these people. You can't treat them kindly in the misbegotten belief that they will in turn treat you with respect. They only have one attitude toward their political opponents--contempt.
