Ezra Klein: The Constitution is Hard to Understand Because It's Old or Something
— Dave in Texas

It's old man.

Conservatives (thanks in large part to the Tea Party movement) have promoted awareness of the Constitution to the American people, natural rights, limited governmental power. Nora (accept the pudding! oh you will accept the pudding Nora) calls this "lip service". So the MFM must try to marginalize it. Klein must have skimmed over the part about "effective techniques" in the talking points memo, and instead chose the brainy approach, "nobody can understand what it means because it's "over 100 years old".

Really? That's it, it's inscrutable because it's over 100 years old? Thank goodness our betters are super-smart so they can tell us what it really means.

Here's something else that's more than 100 years old.

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself."

- James Madison, Federalist #51

Very difficult to understand, so old. The Constitution defines the role of government, and places constraints upon its power. I may have to read that again, there's lots of more than 100 year old words in it.

Memo to Ezra "the Constitution is Too Damn Old" Klein: before the new Republican members of the House of Representatives read the Constitution in the 112th Congress, they're going to swear an oath to uphold and defend it.

It's not a gimmick.

12 If you can read plain English you can understand the Constitution. That is why since the court decided it was solely its province to interpret the Constitution they should have been replaced by experts in the English language instead of stupid lawyers.

Liberals like to "think" it is hard to understand so that they can tell you that up is down and black is white and you just didn't understand how the framers intended those words to stretch like silly putty at a teeny bopper convention.

Well, we know that during the Cheney Regime, when Dave used his tongue to comb Bush's asshole hairs, getting rid of chunks of 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th,  14th amendments was OK, so long as Dave had Republican ass to lick. Funny, that.

33 Thing about "lip service" is that AT LEAST it is lip service - it acknowledges that there is something there even if you have to notionally recognize it. The Left does not even pay lip service to the Constitution. They OPENLY say stuff like the Constitution lets them do whatever they want, or that it fails because it is full of "negative liberties" and only protects people from the government or something quaint like that. And now morons (not the good kind) like Klein are perfectly cool with being young and hip and shrugging off that old decrepit thing like it was Compuserve chat or something.

45 I'm rather amazed at the recent openness with which the left is declaring the Constitution immaterial to them. There's this, the "you can't amend the Constitution if you respect it" line of BS, and more.

The thing is, if the Constitution is so immaterial to them, then what's the basis for the federal government having any authority? If the government is no longer regulated by the compact agreed upon, then it has violated that compact and is illegitimate. If you don't believe me, read the Declaration of Independence.

But I doubt the left would agree with that. I'm certain they would assert that the federal government is still legitimate. But on what basis? Certainly not on the consent of the governed, not if the federal government will no longer abide by the limits of the Constitution.

The only remaining basis is pure force. So the left has, bluntly, reduced the arguments for the legitimacy of their policies to "because we have the power to make you do it".

While clarity is nice, it can also be quite terrifying.

49 That's why liberals have erased the Constitution and our founding fathers from public school curriculum.  They want the people to be as ignorant of their own laws as possible so that the liberals can do whatever they want without those pesky restrictions on government power getting in their way.  Heaven forbid they should actually read the words that were written during our founding, they might actually understand it and realize everything the liberals are trying to do violates those principles that lead to this country's greatness.

65 Ah, well, you know - the English language itself is pretty far over the "hundred-year-old" event horizon, and nobody really understands that, either...

Other than most people who aren't Socialists, Liberals, Democraps (sorry about the repetition, there...), illegal immigrants from the South, those possessing less than ten or a dozen functioning brain cells (again with the repetition!...), and victims of mental infantile paralysis named Ezra Klein, that is.

(It seems, these days, almost any empty-headed doofus with a so-so haircut and a not-too-badly-fitting suit who can stare into a camera and speak two or more sentences without drooling unduly or stammering overmuch, is thereby endowed as a "political commentator" - li'l Ezzy's only virtue appears to be that he can marginally outdo Li'l Obambam at reading a teleprompter screen. That high-pitched whining-and-spinning sound you hear in the background is coming from the coffins of Chet Huntley and David Brinkley...)

Fortunately for those of us able to actually think about something useful beyond the next nonsensical self-serving pro-Liberal ten-second sound-bite, it's easy to recognize Ezra Klein (and similar inDUHviduals) as being substantially less (both chronologically and mentally) than 100 years old, and as being likewise very, very easy to understand. Also fortunately, very, very easy to ignore...

That's very unfortunate because the humanities, when taught well and incorporated into a well-rounded education, provide information to give you the insight to solve problems in a variety of settings.  Unfortunately that train left the station so goddamn long ago there's no hope of ever catching up to it.

Don't listen to this from the perspective of a logical mind.

They are rolling out a new strategy.  And their targets are ignorant people.  For example, 100 years was deliberately chosen rather than 200 or 230.  The latter wouldn't catch attention, but 100 will.  Klein knows full well the age of the Constitution.  For his targets, frankly, 25 years would have sufficed, but it also doesn't carry the impact of 100.  They probably poll tested the numbers.

That explains Ezra - he's Goofus from Goofus and Gallant.

Hang on - that was Highlights magazine not Weekly Reader.

93 First of all the Constitution is over two hundred years old and very clear especially when you combine it with the writings of the day to aid clarity.the fact is our government has becomea criminal organization hell bent upon deceiving and stealing from the American people. They go to washington to do us harm republicons and Democrats are nearly the same in terms of their actions they talk different only to trick their constituencies into supporting their treasonous misdeeds. Both the Democrats and repubs worked feverishly to hijack the Tea Party and force it under the Republican banner. So many idiots fell for the divide and conquer strategy. And the Israelis have swooped in to control the Tea Party. The Israelis have occupied and subverted our democracy even worse than Palestine. The Tea Party needs to open 9/11 and end its ties to the neocon Republicans. Go back to what it really is and end the criminal hijacking of america and stop the liberal conservative dems vs repub in fighting that keeps us from getting our country back from the criminals that have hijacked it.

Funny, I always figured that MSNBC would be the type of place that had unisex bathrooms, ala Ally McBeal.  Thanks for confirming it for me, C'ntessa!

115 I guess the Constitution is so difficult to understand because there are no insertions in the Articles and Amendments, such as, "Uh!", "Like, man!", "Er, ah.", Duh", "Ya know". Good grief!

117 I've decide to utilize my marginal bully pulpit in defense of what Ezra Klein was implying. He obviously was not clear enough, perhaps an analogy would do the trick: http://j.mp/gJrWOR

118 A perfect example of why the historic American people are turning away from main stream media in bewilderment and disgust. Ezra Klein represents the kind of front men our new hostile dual-citizen cultural Marxist Zionist "elite" prefer. It is encouraging to see the healthy contempt the American people are developing for his kind of "analysis".
