Evening Open Thread + Goofing on LATimes Staffers and Their Empty Threat To Quit
— Ace

It occurred to me -- what exactly is the job market like for a Los Angeles crime beat reporter outside of the city of Los Angeles? One can change cities, of course, and reporters do, but they'd be leaving a lot of their rolodex behind.

Anyway, it just seems like Alec Baldwin's famous and multiple threats to leave the United States for France.

Oh, and here's something. Now out-and-proud Jason Collins was engaged to a woman until 2009.

She says she had "no idea" he was gay.

Even worse -- like the rest of America, she had no idea he was a professional basketball player.

Maybe J Collins is making it up.  He's a no-talent on a nowhere team that nobody talked about before today.  Now the POTUS has him on the phone, the Wizards can't get rid of him, because *phobia, and he's a "historic first".

Via AP at HA,   If he  [Collins]  ends up unsigned then technically he’ll have come out after playing his last game, which complicates the “first gay active player in a major sport” narrative. The league won’t want to forfeit that claim to fame, and it really won’t want people thinking that Collins wasn’t signed because he’s gay.

90 Gunmaker Sturm Ruger Credits Dems Gun Control Efforts With Pushing Sales To Record High… Well done, Democrats. (Reuters) – Gunmaker Sturm Ruger & Co Inc reported record quarterly sales after fears of new gun controls spurred demand, and the company said it was scouting for a third factory to boost production. Shares of the company rose about 8 percent in extended trade. Sales jumped about 39 percent to $155.9 million in the first quarter from a year earlier. It rose 10 percent from the fourth quarter. Gun demand has been boosted in part by attempts to ban the sale of certain high capacity rifles and ammunition in the wake of the shootings at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in December. “Strong demand from consumers, coupled with the current political climate, resulted in unprecedented levels of orders from retailers to distributors …,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

It's amazing how alike most of the spectators looked.  Gray hair, short and tight haircuts, mid-50's to 60's, shorts and t-shirt, no makeup, overweight, very forgettable faces.

96 I think part of the problem is two things. One is the idea that deep feelings almost automatically means sexual feelings I mean if he's straight until 2009 maybe he just confused a deep feeling of intimacy with guys with being gay. it seems natural that one would have a deep level of intimacy with people you practice a game with every day. It's kind of like men in war to a lesser extent. They might develop a deep bond with other men having the same experiences but that doesn't mean they want to jump in the sack with them. However, the whole culture is so sexualized that if you feel love towards someone who is not your spouse or your child that automatically means sex and that you must act on your feelings. Does this make sense? The other is that maybe the ball player wants someone who wants to have specific sexual practices that he never got enough of with his girfriend. I am not trying to get into an argument about whether people are born gay. I think some are and some aren't and sexual attraction can run the gamut. I just think the sexualizationn of culture is a huge problem in more ways than one. It's like the garbage of insisting that say Emily Dickinson was lesbian gay or that Abraham Lincoln was. Why?. Becxause she wrote passionate sounding letters to her sister in law? Gee, many women did that in the Victorian era and nobody assumed they were gay. Just ardent. And Abe lLincoln-supposedly he slept in a bed with another man. Well, gee, up through the 1800's many families sometimes slept together because they wasn't the same expectation of individual space and privacy that we have in the 20th and 20th century. if you were a single man who went to a hotel in the 1800's you might get stuck in a bed with someone you had never met. Does that mean the people were gay? No And anyway, the man who suggested Abe was gay said that he had no real proof. He did it to further the gay right agenda.

“I’m startled,” says Dean Cheng, a research fellow and veteran China-watcher at the Heritage Foundation. “Is this risky? Well, since the satellite was openly contracted, they [the Chinese] know who is using which transponders. And I suspect they’re making a copy of all of it.”

Even if the data passing over the Apstar-7 is encrypted, the coded traffic could be used to give Chinese cryptanalysts valuable clues about how the American military obfuscates its information. “This is giving it to them in a nice, neat little package. I think there is a potential security concern.”

And even if the Chinese don’t intercept the data, there’s always the danger of them suddenly deciding to block service to the American military

I said, "You're right! I have a PDP-8, and sure enough, it's got a burned out front panel light. So you're calling to walk me through how to replace that, right?"

Uh, no, not right.

Needless to say, not what they were expecting or wanting.

Eventually he tried to get me to log into a website url that he provided so that I could download the file that I supposedly needed to fix all of the problems that he was so helpfully identifying for me. Or in other words, I suspect that it's all a plan to get the user to load a trojan into their own machine. My lady tried to get me to allow a remote connection so they could help me clean up my computer. You've got to be a Pentagon military officer to fall for shit like this.

They have two incredible kids.  Both are successful in their businesses.

I love them both, but the husband just sets my "gaydar" to pinging every time I'm around him.  I've kinda grown used to it.

If she's happy, I'm happy for her.

There's a downside to living on a Golf Course...

Some friends bought a house on a Golf Course, and learned:

• Broken windows from golf balls can be a regular thing.

• No privacy fences allowed...so that golfers can have access to your back yard.

• If they didn't mow their lawns 'on time'...a lawn crew would be dispatched to do it for them and they would be billed for it.

So, it's a good idea to get a current copy of the Bylaws before you buy.

I suspect that's the book that my uncle read.  He mentioned having read one that claimed Fuchida played up his own role during the war during his post-war interviews.

I think my favorite revisionist item, though, is the addition to Prange's revised "At Dawn We Slept", where he states that he didn't put anything about the "Roosevelt Knew!" conspiracy theory in his book because all of the evidence supporting it was so flat out silly.

@216 There was a really good book calledOperation Mincemeat that tells the story. A must read if you like that sort of thing. I also think James Bond's Ian Fleming was involved in the planning of this deception.

--------------------

iirc, there was also a book written about it called, "The Man Who Never Was".

Haven't read it, though, so I can't report if it's any good.

Know someone who retired to a farming area about an hour or two from all the major cities.  They love it.  Bought a large house for cheap, at least by coast standards.  Fixing it up and renting out the extra rooms for B&B and keeping pretty fully booked. And trying their hand at small farming.

Bisexuality in females skews the stats, I think.   How many "lipstick lesbians" are exclusively hot for women?

Because there's a bit of a difference between a woman who is willing to be in a relationship with either a man or another woman, and a woman who is repelled by men and only wants another woman.

But don't forget - all of us California residents are ungrateful wretches who aren't willing to pay for our government -the proof being how Prop 13 kept property taxes from rising through the roof.

Sure, CA is worse than ID. Hell, CA is worse than everywhere. To me, 6% is still quite high, especially compared to 0% right across the border in the deep blue state of Washington.

WA has 0% income tax 9% sales tax. Montana has a pretty high income tax, but no sales tax. Oregon too, no sales tax pretty high income tax. Wyoming has no income tax. Yet somehow Idaho in in the middle of all these states and has a 6% sales tax and a 6% income tax. Not sure how that happened.

314 The house will not be visible from the road. You must travel on a gravel road for about a fifth of a mile through woods, which will then open up to a cleared plot with a ranch style home. In the back will be a stocked pond, a garden, a chicken coop, and a 25 yd pistol and 300 yd rifle range.

327 Junior.  I know.  Silly isn't it.  The whole chain of 'Roosevelt Knew' is so tenuous it's not really funny.  Roosevelt and the US Navy were busy with their 'Short of War' stance in regards to the U-boats.  Thus Roosevelt and the Arcadia Conference was focused on the events in Europe.  Asia and Japan were a distraction to him.

But according to these arm chair experts we get Roosevelt manipulating Japan.  How can he manipulate Japan?  Because the US was reading Purple, the Japanese diplomatic traffic.  So Roosevelt, knowing Americans would not willingly get into a war, used his inner knowledge of Purple to put Japan into a corner where it had to attack the US.  This ignores facts like FDR being denied access at times to Purple because of careless leaks inside the White House.

Or "East Wind Rain" message.  That still gets trotted out.  The mysterious message some radio hams claim to have heard even though every transmit key in First Air Fleet had been secured.

But the one they always latch onto when all else fails is when FDR was asked what would the US do about worsening relations with Japan.  And he frankly said the US would have to be attacked.  Its an immediate Point A to Point Z 'ah ha he knew!' jump to a preconceived conclusion that ignores things like oh the US Constitution and the political reality FDR was facing - extension of the one year call-up only passing by one vote.  Isolationism ran strong in the US, heck Charles Lindburgh was one of those who opposed US involvement.

342 NASA is paying $424 million more to Russia to get U.S. astronauts into space, and the agency's leader is blaming Congress for the extra expense. NASA announced its latest contract with the Russian Space Agency on Tuesday. The $424 million represents flights to and from the International Space Station aboard Russian Soyuz spacecraft, as well as training, for six astronauts in 2016 and the first half of 2017. That's $70.6 million per seat -- well above the previous price tag of about $65 million. Russia currently provides the only means of getting people to and from the space station, and its ticket prices have soared with each new contract. yeah lets depend on the Ruskies to get us into space and on the Chicoms to handle our Military communications. I mean what could possibly go wrong? And people think Roosevelt sold us out?

Pretty bold on the part of Bosch, given that a huge amount of their energy comes from French Nukes. They are very pleased to have spent billions on solar...., of course it stops working between  3 or 4 in the afternoon, and doesn't come back until 10 the next morning. In toto, and after HUGE investment, they get something like 3% of the power from solar. Of course Merkle has shut down all nukes in Germany, just in case there is a tsunami in Frankfort. 384 Colorado Alex, well I could have mentioned how Lindburgh spoke before the American Bund in support of Germany.  But was trying to keep the post brief.

But I shall rant and prattle on.  Another factor holding FDR's hand was the lack of preparedness of US military forces.  The August 1941 war games in Louisiana showed how far the US Army still had to go since both armies used a lot of simulated, made of lumber, artillery and simulated tanks.  US Navy was not much better, the plans were in place for mass production but nothing had been built yet.  USS Hornet had just commissioned month before Pearl Harbor but the first of the mass produced carriers USS Essex would not see Pacific waters until 1943.  The Fletcher class DDs and Atlanta class AA cruisers would reach the Pacific in time to participate in the slugging matches around Guadalcanal.  It was such a near run thing that by November 1942, the US Navy had exactly three aircraft carriers - Saratoga, Ranger, and Enterprise.  USAAC later USAAF was still small and expanding.  It was also hobbled with obsolete types, when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor they accidentally did the US a favor by wiping out all the P-36s and P-40Cs on the ground.

This is what I get for disappearing for an hour.

The Horde is so smart that no obscure reference or pop culture tidbit involving a hot chick who likes to be with other chicks will be missed

388 He just cannot fathom wanting another man, just doesn't compute. Needless to say, he has no trouble understanding lesbians, lol, church or no church, because women are so sexy that how could even other women resist them! Posted by: Tammy al-Thor at April 30, 2013 09:16 PM (PkYpQ) One day, we'll need to get together at a MeetUp. Thor sounds like he and I would get along just fine.

389 290 "Generally speaking, I think very few women are truly lesbians. I think a lot more are bisexual and for a variety of reasons end up preferring to have relationships with women. On the other hand, my guess is that there are very few bisexual men. Instead they tend to be either gay or straight."

I always considered homosexuality with guys to be like the 19th century people used to do with black. If you willingly, in good state of mind, have some sort of sexual act with another guy even just once, you're gay.

Remember: Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford, and Elton John all banged girls at various times in their lives.

Girls are in three categories: straight, lesbian, or attention whore/college experimentation period

391 Charleston is a great place, lived there during Hurricane Hugo time ('89 or '90?) and my folks have lived there ever since - so I'm there for a couple weeks each year. Lots of good restaurants and - although it took longer to catch on there than in my hometown in OH - a very nice local, craft beer scene. Lots of progtards, but that's true of pretty much any city

More importantly, ObamaCare is designed to fail and crash the system when it does. Never let a crisis go to waste, and sometimes you need to give the crisis a little help to get going.

The goal is complete nationalization ala the UK NHS, Liverpool Pathway and all. The more damage ObamaCare does more it will please him ever after.

393 The one stupid thing that occurred to me today was that there were probably people somewhere crying when the Collins story came out.  Really?  I had a PTSD moment of the people at work who were crying and bawling as they were watching the 2009 inauguration on company time...

They do. Microsoft has funded and contributed personnel to bringing down several botnets, among other forms of going on the offensive. I don't know how much they're spending on the effort annually but I bet they have accountants who've worked out how to write off much of the expenditure. Plus it's valuable experience for the security guys, so part of it probably gets listed as training expenses.

MS, Google, and other companies also contribute to white hat hacking events and contests to add some fun and incentive to finding that next big vulnerability. It's an arms race.

396 "Jewells, do they still have that restaurant on top of Sandia peak? I used to take all my visiting peeps up the "ski-lift" thingy to go there. Decent food and spectacular views of the vally."

Totally not Jewells, but I was up there a week ago and yes the restaurant/bar is there. 18 degrees! Cold beer inside though.
Nice golf at Paa-ko Ridge.

A controversial read: Robert Stinnett's _Day of Deceit_.

I learned a few things.

400 Was talking to someone in Los Angeles who is in real estate. She said that suddenly all the stars want to dump their million dollar mansions. I told her I find that hard to believe and she said "well the tonight show is moving to New York so it's just a matter of time before Hollywood is not the place to find work". We then talked about how there a pockets of tech all over the country now, not just in silicon valley. I wonder if she was telling the truth.

402 If I was a Koch brother, I'd buy the LAT and hire the sorority cunt-punter to be the new editor-in-chief. Her first assignment would be to write one of her buck-the-fuck-up, morale-boosting memos that she excels at.
