ESPN's Subscriber Numbers Plummet for Second Straight Month
— Ace

They lost 550,000 subscribers in November, which follows October's losses of 629,000 subscribers. These numbers are per Nielsen. Though ESPN challenged Nielsen's numbers last month, Nielsen reviewed them but still found big losses for ESPN's subscriber numbers.

[T]he worst month in the history of ESPN has now been followed up by the second worst month in ESPN history. ESPN has now lost a jawdropping 1.176 million subscribers in the past two months.

Putting that into perspective, that means nearly 20,000 people a day are leaving ESPN for each of the past two months.

If that annual average subscriber loss continued, ESPN would lose over seven million subscribers in the next 12 months. And at an absolute minimum, these 1.176 million lost subscribers in the past two months will lead to a yearly loss in revenue of over $100 million.

According to Nielsen ESPN now has 88.4 million cable and satellite subscribers, a precipitous decline from well over 100 million subscribers just a few years ago

...

The rapid decline -- and apparent escalation -- in cable and satellite customers abandoning the bundle is the biggest story in sports, and there isn't a close second. That's why I've been writing about it for the past several years.

He goes on to analyze ESPN's business model. ESPN is set to pay $7.3 billion in broadcast rights to various sports organizations this year. This is all contractual; they can't get out of it. ESPN can afford to pay that amount only because they have huge subscriber base and they charge every single cable subscriber in America $7 per month (which, of course, you can almost never get out of paying).

The broadcast rights are ESPN's selling point, but also a huge cost. If ESPN makes less money, they're still on the hook for that massive rights cost. ESPN is still making a lot of money (just less of a lot of money), and will make money for the next five years, but if people keep cord-cutting and abandoning ESPN, at some point, ESPN just won't be able to pay such huge amounts for broadcast rights, which then undermines their whole raison d'etre: Who wants to watch a "sports channel" that doesn't broadcast big sports?

ESPN used to be like that, 30 years ago, featuring a lot of pro bowler league and other cheap-to-buy broadcast rights. In fact, it used to look a lot like "The Ocho." (If it's almost a sport, we've got it here). I can't see them going backwards back to that. Not while extorting $7 per month from every cable subscriber in America.

99 Remember the X-Games? Dumb kids sliding down hills on snow shovels? Good times, good times. Posted by: Boomer at November 30, 2016 11:21 AM (XoldI) Ha! I was discussing with Bander the other night that the X Games provide scientific proof that men's brains and women's brains are completely different. You see, a man looks at a snowmobile, looks at a ski slope and goes "Hey! I know! I'll take the snowmobile down the ski slope and do acrobatics in the air when I go flying off a mogul! What? How am I going to practice that? I'll build a ramp and a mud pit and take the snowmobile off the ramp and land in the mud! I mean OBVIOUSLY." A woman hears that and says "You are going to die." Mind you, I love the X Games, they're a ton of fun and, sure, sure, there are women who participate in them. But coming up with the events themselves? Yeah, that's a guy thing.

It's harder for us to avoid ESPN during college basketball season and impossible if we want to follow college baseball. (Most of that is on-line ESPN 3 until you get to the championship level.) Doesn't really matter, I suppose, since we have to pay for it with our Comcast package anyway.

105 If we're being intellectually honest, I think it's 90/10 in favor of people simply cutting the cord from cable in general. I think very little of it has to do with politics. --------- I would tend to agree, but I do think the political stuff is giving people a reason to completely cut it. Now they are not just cutting it because they don't watch it much, but they are making a statement. Sort of helps in that process.

106 With numbers like this, now you know why ESPN is buying the MLB streaming service. Why would ESPN buy MLB's streaming service? Simple, it is the company every goes to to manage their streaming services. NHL, HBO, and WWE all use MLB for their online streaming packages. HD quality streaming, VOD programming, DVR features on live programming, and the ability to watch home or away feeds. The cost? MLB and WWE are about $120 each a year, $10 a month. If colleges and the NFL went to packages like this, I would drop most of my cable package in a heartbeat. Sucks living in an area with mountains because we can't get our locals with a roof mounted antenna.

=======
Right.

The advertising contracts are not long-term.

They can only charge what they do for the ads if they can show they have the viewers to justify it.

And the cable nets will use that club of lost viewers to renegotiate their remittance rates. So, that'll drop.

And I blame ESPN/Disney for all the ads in football now. Before they bought MNF, the games rarely went to commercial after a kick or a punt. They paid so much and, to pay for it, they stuffed even more commercials in.

And everyone followed suit.

Now, you see more commercials than actual football.

196 Isn't ESPN responsible for NASCAR going full gay? Playoffs. In car racing. Playoffs. Posted by: garrett at November 30, 2016 11:25 AM (MQZBa Uh, no. That would be Nascar itself. When the year end champion was winning without ever having to win a race, and simply racked up points, they had to do something to change it. So they went to the "Chase". Most Nascar fans like the new format. You can have someone who has done well throughout the year, but it comes down to single elimination for the championship during the last ten races. Meaning you have to race to win, not just place in points. Much better racing. Nascar has many other problems, none of which will be solved easily or without great pain. IMO, the season is way too long, some of the tracks such as Michigan have to have additional car design or track design changes, multi car team owners should be prohibited, IMO, and ticket prices are exhorbitant for the average fan.

198 I even tried to ditch ESPN entirely and get MLB.tv, but you know what? You can only get it if you've already got a cable subscription to "the sports networks" and even then you might be subject to blackouts! Posted by: pookysgirl Um what? That is just flatly wrong. The entire point of MLB.tv is that you can stream the games without any kind of cable/satellite subscription. There is absolutely no need for a cable subscription to "the sports networks" in order to buy the MLB.tv premium package. Now. That being said, there are all kinds of blackout restrictions if you live in a local tv area for a MLB team and if you are trying to dump cable and go to MLB.tv instead, nope, you are SOL. So that may be what you mean. But other than that, no. Hell, MLB.tv is probably the most cost effective streaming subscription. Every out of market game for every team for $110 a year. If you go single team, it's $85 a year. That's, what, just over 50 cents a game for single team? That's the model that I think live sports will end up using. Want baseball? MLB.tv. Like tennis? Tennis Channel Plus. NBA? League Pass. NHL? Center Ice. NFL? Sunday Ticket. Soccer? Move to Europe. Do that and a la carte programming and let people pay for what they want.

But it seems like the present crew in those industries would rather double down on stupid than back off and give up on the leftist politics. Do the SJWs scare them that much or are they True Believers themselves?
--

Ah, you're confusing people who rely on logic vs. people who rely on emotion.

In many wasys, these supposed business people are no different from college SJWs and islamic jihadis.

"I'm RIGHT!" they scream.

When people don't agree, emotion based people don't listen to the arguments from the other side. They scream more.

"I'M 100% RIGHT AND YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG," they scream in a much louder voice.

If you don't agree, they'll just keep screaming until you do.

Or until they get fired from their cushy university teaching job, or blow themselves up because their god alan told them to. No difference really.

So yes, they are True Believers.

The rise in “subprime” car loan delinquencies is a “significant concern”, according to researchers at the New York Federal Reserve, which point out how the market continues to grow even as the number of borrowers in arrears is rising. In an article on the NY Fed’s Liberty Street Economics blog, two of the central bank’s researchers explore the latest quarterly report on US household debt, and pull out some worrying trends. The auto loan market is growing strongly, reaching $1.135tn in the third quarter, and 2016 looks like it will be the strongest since at least 1999, when the Fed’s data begins. Most of the loans are made to highly creditworthy borrowers, those with an Equifax credit score of 760 or above. But the pile of loans for “subprime” borrowers, with scores below 620, has climbed sharply in recent years, after understandably slumping in the wake of the financial crisis. The subprime car loan market surpassed its pre-crisis peak last year, and has grown to about $275bn 2016,

Then they fired Curt Schilling. And then they went full-retard SJW, didn't reign-in any of the apologists for JEF or any of the folks who called-out #45's supporters as KKK (AHEMkornheiserAHEM) and I've not watched them since. Don't miss it. Disney is either going to start enforcing some message discipline at ESPN or, as I sadly suspect, will themselves be outed as The Problem and not The Solution. 287 How does ESPNs decline compare in relation to other channels in similar cable tier bundles? I mean, you can't just stop subscribing to ESPN. It is usually part of a tier that includes other garbage. So not sure that this is an entire damning of the channel itself. The advent of cord cutting isn't just about people going all protesty. It is also about the fact that the economy still sucks and things like cable tv are the first to get nipped. That nipping is even easier with cable because it is something that you don't have to entirely get rid of but can just tier down.

The Bank of England confirmed on Twitter that the notes contain "a trace of a substance known as tallow" - a rendered form of animal fat, processed from suet, which is sometimes used in soaps and candles. An online petition against the notes has been getting attention Wednesday. The petition says the use of tallow is "unacceptable to millions of vegans, vegetarians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others in the U.K."

While its true, the government can't strip natural born citizens of their citizenship, Americans can voluntarily give up their citizenship. All Congress has to do is pass a law stating that it recognizes that anyone who burns the American flag is voluntarily surrendering their citizenship and all rights and privileges thereof.

367 But here's the sober reality. Most of the network that runs the day to day operations really don't give a shit about how many conservatives are pissed off and viewers that are leaving. It's the same with newspapers and basically every form of tv media in this country. 415 MLB.TV is the only reason to have cable. Baseball tonight back in the 1990's and early 2000's was a must watch. MLB.TV took all their talent and added more. Made it a fun channel to watch. They made Baseball Tonight look like amateurs and borning. That model should be followed by others to destroy ESPN. The NCAA could create their own channel, but they won't because the Administrations make so much money from ESPN. ESPN is turning NCAA sports and the NFL into the Toxic corrupt Pro Boxing, which killed that sport.

416 Oh if you're looking for curling, it's on NBC Sports. Yes, that's a separate channel. Yes, they show curling. Yes, I watch it unironically. Can you imagine how well a "center-right" sports network would do if a media company went with that? Almost like Roger Ailes with Fox News when it first started out? It would dwarf ESPN over night. Posted by: Maritime at November 30, 2016 12:12 PM (g9iYn) You mean FS1 and FS2? I assume, I should say, because even though I watch more sports than the next nine or ten Hordelings combined, I don't watch any of the talking head shows. I watch specific games or events. I care not at all if it's on ESPN or FS1 or Big Ten or SEC or Tennis Channel or NBC Sports Channel or whatever. It's literally meaningless to me who the provider is that carries it.

450 But here's the sober reality.

Most of the network that runs the day to day operations really don't give a shit about how many conservatives are pissed off and viewers that are leaving.

It's the same with newspapers and basically every form of tv media in this country.

Their left-wing ideals and being part of the "cool club" are far more important to these people than making shareholders happy.

So this type of slant will be par for the course for a long time.

My strategy is at the very least, stop the government from going out of their way to protect these companies. Ending bundling is an easy start.

I have always thought that your box sends some kind of signal back, in order to verify what channels you are paying for.  So, they should also be able to tell what channel you watching throughout the day.  Why would they still be paying Nielsen at all?

I have the bottom of list package.  If they offered everything Ala-cart, they would get a lot more money out of me.

"Good morning, National Football League; this is Roger Goodell speaking."

"Roger, hi, this is John D. Skipper, CEO over at ESPN.  Hey, we've got a money problem here, a big one."

"Yeah, tell me about it, John.  We're losing fans faster than Kristen Stewart over here."

"Well, you know what?  If you'd rein in that Colin Kaepernick clown of yours, maybe people would come back to the NFL, and we'd both start making money again."

"Really, John?  How would fans coming back to the NFL help you?  It's not like you actually pay attention to NFL.  Do you have plans to become a sports channel again?  I mean, besides whining about concussions?"

"Oh, fvck you, Roger, just fvck you.  You're letting your protesters drive away exactly the kind of people who care about your sport.  Don't you know anything about demographics?"

"Yeah, whatever.  Hey, can you make this quick? Inside the NFL comes on in three minutes.  Oh, you wouldn't know that, I'm sorry; that's not on your network, is it?"

Ive started using Cascade Fryer Boil Out. Its the old Cascade formula with phosphates. My dishes are clean again. Posted by: fixerupper at November 30, 2016 12:36 PM (8XRCm) I just buy the phosphate and add it to the Cascade, I will have to try Cascade Fryer Boil Out.

562 Go to Home Depot and pick up some TSP (trisodium phosphate). Painters use it to degrease surfaces before painting them. Just tip in a bit along with dishwasher detergent, and voila! It's like a time machine back to a saner time, at least as far as dishwashing goes. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara Great minds think alike, I do the same thing and have a small box of TSP under the sink I mix in. Only takes a tiny amount.

But then again, these rules are written by appliance makers. Why its almost as if big business likes big government.

567 Go to Home Depot and pick up some TSP (trisodium phosphate). Painters use it to degrease surfaces before painting them. Make sure that it really contains trisodium phosphate (Na3PO4). I've seen some instances where they still use the TSP name but the chemical is NOT TSP.

569 ESPN is dumb if it's going to allow its on air talent to air their (uniformly leftist) political beliefs to a captive audience who is tuning in to see football or basketball. I think they may be just trying to hang on to a certain section of sports fans while they see single-sport networks take away their customers. Black blackity black lives black hands up don't shoot blackity I can't breathe BLM blackity, football.

I have a friend who always got pissed off at the "John 3:16" signs at football games; he complained that people didn't come to the game to get religion.

I told him he should demand equal time.  I invited him to come to my church and hold up a sign at the back of the congregation that said "Alabama 52 - USC 6" during the sermon.

581 531 Netflix blocks VPNs ..EBOD Netflix Posted by: Mortimer, Finish Her! at November 30, 2016 12:38 PM (W8WOQt There is a service available that bypasses this and they constantly work to stay ahead of Netflix. I can't remember the name but I'll describe it. For 40 bucks a year, it is a platform that takes every single TV and movie Netflix offers across the globe into one platform to browse and watch with identical Netflix platform. Search for ways to bypass Netflix VPN on the internet and it should pop right up as the best way to get around that problem.

588 To the surprise of no-one I'm sure, BBC Sport is Full SJW. Their website is about 35% sports, 65% SJW activism. And everything is shot through with an undercurrent of social justice framing. It's been a very noticeable, if gradual, change and it only looks like going further in the same direction. It's like the front page of Yahoo... all the inane crap a LIV can handle.

There's no way to unbundle the BBC from the TV you pay for. You're supposed, by law, to pay for a 'TV licence' every year; the money goes to the BBC. Total anachronism. People go to jail for not paying. I don't pay. #fuckthebbc

590 586- also, it's actually very interesting what happened in 1972. Like 1920, it was an election in which an entire group of people who previously couldn't vote were added to the rolls, women in 1920, yutes in 1972 (also true to a certain extent in 1964 and 1968 in parts of the south)....both of those years were landslides for Republicans.

591 Is this because people are leaving ESPN specifically, or people cancelling cable altogether. I know folks that only keep their cable because of the sports channels. 594 ESPN is owned by ABC and Disney.  ABC is how they got their rights to NBA and NFL games.  If ESPN falls in revenue, they will just switch the broadcasts to ABC.

You can get cable without ESPN, but they tend to be more basic broadcast only, or broadcast plus a few channels.  For example, I can get USA, AMC, CSPAN, Disney, CNN, FoxNews, Cartoon, Showtime, Food, HGTV, and some more in a basic package.
