What New Orleans was, but may never be again.

DSC001321.jpg
Used without Sobek's permission, but I'm feelin' like an outlaw.

Looking at Sobek's pictures, one understands how Anne Rice developed such a luscious writing style.

Me? I grew up in New Jersey. I can write about vampires in Bayonne. When they're not sucking blood they're riding the bus to scenic Atlantic City for some wicked nickle-slots at the Taj Majal.

Meanwhile... Dave from Garfield Ridge says maybe we should just give up New Orleans, and Andrea Harris calls him a pussy.

I like that. Pussy Dave From Pussy Garfield Pussy Ridge. I think I'll change it to that when I update the blogroll. Actually, it should get him some additional hits, and he'll like that, being the hit-craving man-whore he is.

It's a question being asked, though. Confederate Yankee notes that Diamond City was destroyed by flood in 1899, and rebuilt on a less precarious site.

It's Awful:

More Video... At CNN, of the damage, and the looters.

This is nice:

Deteriorating conditions in New Orleans will force authorities to evacuate the thousands of people at city shelters, including the Louisiana Superdome, where a policeman told CNN unrest was escalating.

The officer expressed concern that the situation could worsen overnight after three shootings, looting and a number of attempted carjackings during the afternoon.

As was observed by someone I'm too lazy to google, 10% of people are naturally and almost wholly good, and will do the right thing under any situation. 10% are naturally and almost wholly evil, and will do evil under any situation, even when it's really not even in their best interests.

80% have a situational morality, and will be good when civilization demands it, and enforces order, and will do evil when civlization permits it, or disintegrates due to chaos, whether natural or man-made.

Most rioters and looters fall into that 80%. They see the 10% who jump at the chance to destroy or steal, and notice that they suffer no consequences. So they too join in.

Order has to be restored quickly, and roughly if necessary, to bring such folks back into a state of orderliness.

1 My God. Thank goodness it skipped my aunt in Baton Rouge, but really. My GOD. Lootings and riots? This is the United fucking States of America. We're better than this.

2 Same thing happened after Andrew. It'll go on for a few weeks more at least.

The "fabric of society" is much thinner than most people realize when the shit really hits the fan.

The "you loot, we shoot" signs need to go up.

3 Ace, I appreciate the, uh, link, but I'll have to pass on the blogroll revision, thanks.

4 Mike notes:

"Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital.

Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility.

The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond."

A children's hospital. Jesus Christ.

Mike adds:

"I would love to see looters get shot dead on the spot. Fuck this shit. Lord of the Flies was a cautionary tale, not a fucking manual on how to live your useless lives. "

Indeed, as a certain guy we all know might say. In-fucking-deed.

10 Dave-- just blogroll Ace back as DUMBASS ACE. You are entirely right about not rebuilding New Orleans. For Crying out loud its six feet below sea level average elevation. What this nation needs is a DUMBASS law: anyone DUMBASS enough to build below sea level has to pay for the flood damage themselves with no government payment or insurance payments. P.S. I am very sorry for those caught in this disaster, but it would be foolish to rebuild on the same site and have this same catastrophe to deal with in the future.

11 I remember living in SoCal during the 1992 LA riots. I was listening to the radio on the way home from work, and just as I pulled into my driveway, Pres. Bush (41) gave a speech asking for calm and order. And I started crying as I sat in my car and listened, thinking: "This can't be America, and these can't be Americans."

America has, of course, always been about opportunity and freedom, but it used to be about destiny and vision as well. The left's unrelenting criticism has taken the vision of progress and achievement away from us and replaced it with a dream of equality and peace. A seductive dream, indeed, but in striving to achieve it they have focused our attention inward to an unhealthy, and now self-destructive extent.

It's hard to fault the opportunistic crimes of people who feel that not only there is no purpose to their individual existence, but no purpose to the existence of the nation or even mankind. The looters aren't stealing from fellow Americans who share the American dream, they're stealing from the mythical "man," the djinn the liberals conjured up as the foil to their dream.

We used to look outward towards the future, but now we're feeding on our own intestines and arguing about who is getting the biggest portion.

12 It's hard to fault the opportunistic crimes of people who feel that not only there is no purpose to their individual existence, but no purpose to the existence of the nation or even mankind.

No, I'll fault them alright and throw their sorry asses in prison. They're fucking low lifes. Here's something that should cheer you up: After the riots most of the looters, at least in the Hollywood area, were snitched off by their neighbors and co-workers.

Posted by: at August 30, 2005 11:22 PM (Ehvu2)

13 No, I'll fault them alright and throw their sorry asses in prison.

That's the tactical solution, but strategically we need to cut the liberal rhetoric off at the root and reinstill some serious values and vision in the low-life sector. Otherwise we lose ground with every crisis. Note that in this case they're looting right in front of the police, with no consequences. Next time the police will be instructed to help them.

They did catch a lot of looters in the aftermath, but I think the northerly region (Hollywood) had better success than South Central down to Long Beach (where I lived).

14 I visited New Orleans on several occasions, starting with the World SF Convention in 1989. 100 degree heat and 100% humidity. We wondered how much more it would take before saw rain clouds forming at eye level.

Every vist was at a different time of year and the weather was always at best unpleasant. But we had a good time. I just couldn't image living there. When I first saw how the city sat in a basin beneath the levels of the river and the lake on each side, I realized this place could easily cease to be in my lifetime. My relatives on the East Coast would always assert that my native Southern California would be laid waste by earthquake but the worst of the California quakes in my four decades were far less devastating than what has happened in Louisiana.

They say the French Quarter may be largely spared but I suspect that if I'm ever there again it just won;t be the same.

The looting isn't that surprising when you consider what demographic comprises much of the group that stayed behind. While many of them are normal folks who merely lacked the means to flee in time, many of them are of that barbarian underclass always waiting for their moment to run wild.

Unfortunately, this is the nightmare version of the old joke about New Orleans. That they can't fight crime or disaster because they have NOPD and NOFD.

19 I haven't heard any news of my ex-girlfriend's death, but I can still hope, I guess. She's just north of Biloxi.

I went to Ole Miss, so New Orleans was at least a once-a-year thing. Mardi Gras four or five times, the D-Day Museum, random bar crawls, my first date with Candice after the Kosovo deployment. I hope it's rebuilt somehow, some way. Too much of me is in that town to lose it back to the bayou.

Now as for the looters, shoot them all then start on their political enablers.

Posted by: SGT Dan at August 31, 2005 03:15 AM (jCQ+I)

20 It should be standard police policy in NO that looters get an ass-full of rock salt from a shotgun at the very least. What the fuck is this, Lord of the Flies? An entire city is destroyed and these mouth-breathers' first impulse is to steal and shoot people. Unbelievable.

Posted by: UGAdawg at August 31, 2005 03:43 AM (alGm/)

21 Maybe i was the only one to notice this (i could bet that i wasn't though), but the majority of the looters were...well, black. The guys over at Stormfront must be masturbating over this. All of their most cherished stereotypes come to life. *sigh*

Petty revenge! I love it! (PS: how did you know what I was originally going to call my blog? BUt I decided to go for something less wordy.)

On a side note: Ace, we have moss-covered oak trees and stuff like that all over Florida (yes, we have some left after all the hurricanes -- they're tough trees), in fact all over the South. Mossy oaks aren't what make New Orleans unique -- it's the buildings and history and culture. Cities outside of New York do have those things.

27 If you read Wolcott's front page now, he's claiming that he "took down" his hurricane post. The link above still works though, so he didn't. I can't think of why he'd take it down - I mean, if he gets bummed when a hurricane "doesn't make landfall, or peters out into a puny Category One", shouldn't he be jerking off to the television footage right now, with a nice glass of wine and his "ocicats"?

Look at this post from Michael Moore. First is the irony of Moore criticising Bush for eating cake. What's wrong, asshole? Jealous? Wanted a bit of cake yourself?

Note there's not ONE FREAKING LINK to any sort of aid organization. Check any conservative blog and you'll find those links. The liberals, though, are too busy whining about global warming, the war in Iraq and just being all-around jackasses.

40 No guys. See, it's Bush's fault that our troops are dedicated over sea's and aren't here to help with disaster recovery and martial law. If the troops were here instead of fighting in an unjust invasion, the mess would already be cleaned up and there'd be no looting.

Speaking of which, stealing is stealing. Those ripping off jewelry stores and the like are scum. But I have a harder time judging those taking clothes, food, and water. Seems to me that if I were poor, my home was gone and there was no help in sight, I would have to figure out a way to survive. Unless you have family coming to help or that you can get to, scavenging might be the only alternative.

49 Phinn ... who hate blacks and jews ...

WTF?

Anon, here's a little something just for you:

Question:

What is the reaction of a narcissist likely to be when confronted with your text?

Answer:

It takes a major life crisis to force the narcissist to face up to his False Self: a painful breakdown of a close (symbiotic) relationship, a failure (in business, in a career, in the pursuit of a goal), the death of a parent, imprisonment, or a disease.

Under normal circumstances, the narcissist denies that he is one (denial defence mechanism) and reacts with rage to any hint at being so diagnosed. The narcissist employs a host of intricate and interwoven defence mechanisms: rationalisation, intellectualisation, projection, projective identification, splitting, suppression and denial (to name but a few) – to sweep his narcissism under the psychological carpet.

When at risk of getting in touch with the reality of being mentally disturbed (and, as a result, with his emotions) – the narcissist displays the whole spectrum of emotional reactions usually associated with bereavement. At first he denies the facts, ignores them and distorts them to fit an alternative, coherent, non-narcissistic, interpretation.

Then, he becomes enraged.

Read it for yourself.

58 I'm not sure narcissist is a fair description. I mean, that diagnosis seems sort of self-fulfilling. I'd get pretty annoyed my own bad (narcissistic?) self if someone jumped to a diagnosis of me based on the odd comment or two. I think "out-of-control lunatic" would probably be the more accurate diagnosis for someone who goes from 0 to 95 after someone calls him on his stupid Bush bashing.

60 No, you've got it backwards. Only something like the threat of imprisonment will cause a narcissist to break down his false self.

So, no, I expect this encounter to have absolutely zero long-term effect on Anon. As far as I can tell, he's average and ordinary in every way. Textbook. Commonplace.

He's been manipulated by the media. He's a victim of Left-wing propaganda. He probably thinks very highly of himself by being an anti-Bush Republican (he was probably an anti-Clinton Democrat back in the day), but doesn't realize that his supreme self-absorbtion is not what makes him intelligent and independent -- on the contrary, it makes him highly susceptible to the kind of programming in which the Left specializes.

62 What REALLY ticks me off about the looters is the FACT that is any of them get in a bind because of the flooding, then rescue workers have to place their lives in danger to save these CREEPS. I say, weight them down with all that booty and let 'em drown.

Female parts-name-calling or not, Dave has a point. Rebuilding New Orleans back where it was would be foolish...unless our savvy engineers could come up with a waterproof city. This is NOT the same thing as rebuilding after other disasters because you're not talking about rebuilding using technology that could change the outcome next time. California, for example, doesn't compare because we have the ability to build structures that can withstand earthquakes. Do we have the ability to make levees and pumps that can withstand what Katrina delivered? And if so, would it be worth the extreme costs to build and maintain such a formidable undertaking?

It NEVER made sense to build a city below sea level, especially in the possible path of a hurricane (which distinguishes NO from Denmark and other below-sea-level locations). And it doesn't make sense to rebuild it in the same way and at the same location...especially knowing that the lands were sinking and will continue to sink. This exact scenario of a hurricane taking out New Orleans has existed as a possibility for years, and now it's happened. I imagine that NO WILL get rebuilt, but it should be built farther up the Mississippi in an area that isn't prone to being flooded as much as a below-sea-level area is.

But, Nature may have made it impossible for New Orleans to get rebuilt where it was. We'll have to see.

Later,
bbeck

Interestig in your last post you continue on this narcissit rant but DO NOT IN ANYWAY SHAPE OR FORM ADDRESS WHAT I SAID REGARDING YOUR FABRICATING MY VIEWS.

I leave you all to your cozy aligned views with no dissent sick of ppl like phinn..prefer a board where I can Bash Bush and have a response that shows why his view is supported instead of being called an unsympathetic person.

IM OUT OF HERE AND PHINN GOOD DAY AND A BIG FUCK TO YOU!

64 Anon, stop it...really. You're killing me over here.

Egad, that's some funny stuff.

65 Andrea, sweetheart, you misunderstand. I'm not talking about *t-shirts* but these.

Yup, Ace had his t-shirts, I have my banana hammocks.

Cheers,

66 Don't you sort of imagine anon, signing off, falling backward in his chair, like John Belushi in those old SNL news rants?

67 Yeah, phinn was totally off. No way in hell would we think that you want to make this thread all about you. Don't know how he got THAT idea.

Anyhoo.

Anybody see an update on the children's hospital that was being broken into by looters? Are the kids OK?

68 Whether faced with imprisonment or merely threatened with imprisonment, I assure you, I *will* cry and cry hard. That hardly makes me narcisstic.

New Orleans is going to be okay. They will dry out and rebuild. Better levees and better pump stations. Enough of the doom and gloom.

69 I know, Slu. As though we'd spend our time carefully crafting point-by-point rebuttals to anonymous Sheehan-grade anti-Bush spew.

But, seriously, Anon (I know you're reading this 'cause you can't help but come back and check to see if you got some kind of angry reaction), seek professional help. We love you, Buddy.

70 Oh, so that's what Dave at Garfield Ridge
looks like. Why would you have "garfield.com" and not "pussy"?

Posted by: at August 31, 2005 06:22 AM (Ehvu2)

71 I can't believe the insensitivity of you guys trying to crush anon's dissent. You all would probably try to silence him for screaming anti-Bush tirades at a funereal too. Bastards, the lot of you.

I almost can't look at the pictures of Katrina's wake anymore. I feel bad for the people who have lost loved ones and those that have lost everything that they own. New Orleans will be rebuilt, just too much history not too. Not to be crass, but I wonder where the Saints will be playing the next couple of months.

72 Ace, permission retroactively granted. Sorry about what that does to your outlaw status.

73 #1: If a family is hungry or thirsty and there are stores with store owners guarding them, here's a radical idea: how about go up peacefully to the store owners and ask them for some help instead of trying to kill them and take their stuff? You know, be civilized? I know, we've only had 5,000 or so years of this whole "civilization" thing, but really, I think it could be useful.

#2: I hope the bastards who are stealing TVs, DVD players, and other superfluous shit find out that consumer electronics don't make good flotation devices.

76 The looters are such dumb bastards that as they empty NO and Biloxi out and send the ones who stayed to the Astrodome or such, I have no doubt many will show up at the bus with a garbage bag full of Nikes or jewelry items. They should search all the people leaving for booty and do it under Gov't emergency law so they can be sent on to some barbed wire brutal conditions enclosure where the rest of the looting animals are kept. And kept there in squalor under military law so the flocks of ACLU lawyers now headed down from NYC can't intervene and spring them.

I agree with Dave. Rebuilding NO when it is already 8-12 feet below sea level and sinking another 3 feet every year and with no science that would assure it wouldn't completely reflood the next Cat 4 or 5 Hurricane - would be profoundly stupid and a waste of 20-30 billion dollars. Adding that it is time to roll back the influence of wealthy developers that put million dollar homes on barrier islands or along hurrican bediviled shorelines confident that the taxpayers in the rest of the country will bleed and bleed again to make the reckless dwellers on unsuitable land whole again. So too with Californians that expect people whose houses are sited in prudent areas will pay for the swank houses that burn or slide down the steep hills of loose soil and creosote brush they are built on.

If NO is to be rebuilt, it should be tourist hotels and attractions built above grade, just the French Quarter enclosed by an improved surrounding Levee, and the commercial port. With all the slums and tract housing that cannot be saved from the next major hurricane relocated out of NO by eminent domain onto higher ground elsewhere.

Posted by: Cedarford at August 31, 2005 07:46 AM (6krEN)

77 Err, that's 3 more feet every decade...but that's still bad enough. It becomes a safety issue once most of the houses would be completely submerged in minutes from any major Levee failure (not just Hurricanes - terrorists, big ship smacking one open) and no escape exists to higher ground. Many houses there are only 15 -18 feet high.

Posted by: Cedarford at August 31, 2005 07:55 AM (6krEN)

78 It's official...the hurricane was Bush's fault.

After all, St. Cindy says so:

Well, George and I are leaving Crawford today. George is finished playing golf and telling his fables in San Diego , so he will be heading to Louisiana to see the devastation that his environmental policies and his killing policies have caused. Recovery would be easier and much quicker if almost ½ of the three states involved National Guard were not in Iraq. All of the National Guard's equipment is in Iraq also. Plus, with the 2 billion dollars a week that the private contractors are siphoning from our treasury, how are we going to pay for helping our own citizens in Louisiana , Mississippi, and Alabama? And, should I dare say "global warming?" and be branded as a "conspiracy theorist" on top of everything else the reich-wingers say about me.

"Reich-wingers?"

I have no words.

81 Hi All,

Why are such people as Anon, well, anonymous (I did look up the domain, but it seems to be that of a url squatter)? The word pussy has been cast about recklessly (I know that I am at Ace's place, so allowances must be made ), but Anon seems to earn it. I have never been a Republican, but I am a conservative. I am also not a liar, but can Anon say the same? Maybe pussy isn't quite the correctly descriptive word for this person, but puerile might work. The word troll also comes to mind. I long for the days when you could actually have a reasonable argument with liberals.

82 Welcome, Mike,

You'll find that Ace's site has a unique charm, as well as a great group of commenters. But for some strange reason, it has the worst trolls. I mean, bottom of the barrel. They tend to show up only once or twice, long enough to spit out some canned talking points, get pwn3d within minutes, and never come back.

Except Cedarford. That neanderthal, Nazi motherfucker hangs around like a bad case of jock itch.

85 Hi Phinn,

I believe that I have even commented to you before. I respect your opinion highly (well at least so far ). I suppose that you will not see this. It is unusual that I would chance upon your post. There might be some serious money for someone to write software which keeps track of such stuff. I am just saying.

I have read Ace much longer than I have had the balls to post anything. I even wrote Ace recently (it was complimentary, I swear! ). I basically said that Lileks and Gnat can't be my only refuge when I need a respite from the political battles, and Ace is the place after Allah retired apparently. It is not really that I am a wimp, but lefties generally bore me to tears. It is obvious that they do have talking points as you say, and almost always drop the ball after they have exhausted them. They do not seem to be able to be embarrassed. On the Right (the Left has not ruined this word yet, but you just wait--right will be wrong! ) side of the blogosphere, people respond to criticism sensibly. I have even corrected some bloggers myself, and almost all respond with thanks. I sent an e-mail to Laura Ingraham (and I hope that her cancer woes will improve) after some apparent ignorance about the word loth or loath. Apparently I was not exactly alone. I did not hear back from her, but I did not expect to. Her staff beat her mercilessly the next day about her learning a new word (she assumed that the old goof senator Byrd meant the word loathe). I found it sort of humorous that her staff felt that they could beat her up after they obviously did not correct her at the time. Thanks for covering my six, you assholes! I would have had them beaten, but that is just me.
