Dutch to Prosecute Geert Wilders?
— Ace

Submit or die.

More [Gabe]: A couple of things about this. First, I can't find any other reports that Dutch prosecutors are planning to take legal action against Wilder except for the report Nice Deb links, a Russian news service. So don't get bent out of shape until it actually happens. In other accounts of the Dutch Foreign Minister's comments, it appears he said that diplomats inquired whether Wilders would be prosecuted for violating hate speech laws and that the prosecutors office hadn't decided yet.

The Dutch government has condemned the violent acts depicted in the film, but also rejected Wilder's interpretation of Islam. But there is no indication that Wilder has run afoul of any criminal laws. Some parts of the Islamic world are calling for him to be prosecuted for "paying tribute to terrorism", allegedly a crime in the Netherlands.

It's possible that the news agency was confused about another lawsuit in the works against Wilders this one by the Danish Union of Journalists. Wilders used without permission images of one of the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that led to all the rioting and carrying on two years ago. But it sounds like that lawsuit has already been dropped:

Wilders' spokeswoman Daphne Rozenboom said in an e-mail that Wilders would replace the cartoon and make other minor edits. She could not give details on how Wilders would change a film that has been dispersed widely over the Internet and downloaded millions of times since its release late Thursday.

In Denmark, Westergaard [the cartoonist] said he was happy with Wilders' decision and believed the lawsuit would be dropped.

He added that Wilders might have won his permission to use the cartoon if he had asked.

No word on when the re-edited version will be released.

UPDATE and BUMP [Gabe]: Cartoonist Kurt Westergaard has drawn a political cartoon of Geert Wilders in support of freedom of expression. It uses elements of the cartoon that Wilders appropriated for his film.

3 So, when does Wilders get to threaten his government's officials with beheadings, riots, and chaos for not allowing his film? What's that? He doesn't? Well, that hardly seems fair.

I can't stand when reporters write crap like this:

The cartoon caused riots throughout the world after demonstrators attacked Danish embassies and other buildings with perceived links to the West. More than 100 people died in the violence.

Excuse me? A cartoon CAUSED riots? No, psycho-nutjobs were the cause the riots. It's like saying a women caused a rape because she wore a short skirt.

It makes it sound like the nutjobs were justified - I'm sure we'll read more and more about how Fitna CAUSED all kinds of bad behavior such as death threats, violent protests, etc. The MSM uses this bullshit Cauce-Effect link all the time. It annoys me.

12 More than 100 people died in the violence.

What kind of mentality is that...riot and burn and kill over a fucking drawing?

I had no idea that many people died.

They need to start an animated series involving Mohamed just so militiant muslims get comfortable with the cartoon format.  They act like they have never seen a cartoon before.

Reminds me of  The Jerk..."He hates these cans!"

13 Bet Wilders was all too happy to have an excuse for a re-release of the film. He's gonna get twice the attention.

Posted by: Jahiliyya at March 31, 2008 12:06 PM (dk6hw)

14 "Omar Bakri, the Libyan-based radical Muslim cleric who is barred from Britain, did not think the film was very offensive. "On the contrary, if we leave out the first images and the sound of the page being torn, it could be a film by the [Islamist] Mujahideen," he said."

Posted by: urthshu at March 31, 2008 12:37 PM (bFqDX)

15 He added that Wilders might have won his permission to use the cartoon if he had asked.

Then just give it to him, jackass, instead of playing this game.

16 Sounds like the Dutch don't wanna prosecute but, by saying that no decision has been made yet, they hope to let the whole thing wither rather than explode.

Allahpundit says:

"but Radio Netherlands quotes the Dutch foreign minister as saying prosecutors are looking into it and the last line of this DPA report agrees. Scum:"

The Dutch prosecutor’s office is preparing to take legal action against the maker of an ‘anti-Koran’ film in an attempt to ease tensions over the film’s release, the Dutch foreign minister said on Monday…

Although moderate Islamic groups have said the film is “nothing new” and have made appeals for Muslims to “react calmly and within the law,” the prospect of a backlash in the Islamic world remains a distinct possibility.

Posted by: Nice Deb at March 31, 2008 01:38 PM (vGyLr)

18 Sorry, that should have been a blockquote starting with , "The Dutch".

Posted by: Nice Deb at March 31, 2008 01:39 PM (vGyLr)

Keep your panties dry, boys, the Dutch ain't prosecuting Wilders.  The linked story says only that the foreign minister promised a roomful of ambassadors of Muslim countries that they'd look into whether any laws were broken.  Another Radio Netherlands story yesterday which I quoted in a different thread stated the official Dutch position, "this isn't inciting hate, it's only hurting feelings".

I read the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung just now, and there are Fitna stories but no rumors of prosecution.  And I just read what I could of the Dutch Algemeene Dageblatt, which looks German enough that I can make out a lot of it, and likewise there's not suggestion of prosecuting Wilders.

He's gonna take out the Danish cartoon which, frankly, was an appropriation of copyrighted material.  Basta.

Ok, it looks like we are approaching a certain intellectual "critical mass" here and I am curious to see the reaction/cognitive gymnastics of the freedom-of speech-loving left, on why this obviously political statement should be censored (through govt. action) or banned, by the web-ocracy.

An old canard, that I still find relevant, goes something like "if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for everything". What I absolutely cannot fathom, is that the viral Islamofascism sweeping Europe is EXACTLY the thing the left was built to stop. Fascism, Theocracy, sufferage, censorship, death penalty, forced marriage..etc.

So why in God's name won't they demand and end to this?? Obviously, it would mean Bush was right, in insisting on stopping it, but it seems so shortsighted by the left, to be perfectly suicidal, virtually AND actually. Are they really that dumb?

Well, on the one hand, i'm not sure why Westergaard would make such a stink about Wilder's incorporation of his cartoon (althought, it is of course his intellectual property, and some people are titchier about that than others.)

On the other, Westergaard's cartoon of Wilders is oddly touching, I think.

I get a kind of sad, nostalgiac sense that here we see two peers, thorny and flawed, who in recognition of the desparate quality of the historical moment, find common ground through their creative faculties.

Wow. How beta is that?

But seriously, it's nice to see some indication of solidarity... Westergaard's little cartoon of Wilders, because of its triteness, its sense of having been drawn on the back of a napkin, makes it that much more... not powerful.. but stirring, somehow.

It gives one the sense that even in dark times of censorship and repression, one can still write on the back of a napkin, a few rough strokes and marks... that there can be a site of resistance in such trite, throwaway moments.

Why is everyone looking at me like that?

Fascism, Theocracy, sufferage, censorship, death penalty, forced marriage..etc. Yes, I agree, it is terrible how we make women suffrage. But why do you think the "left" was built to stop these things? it is what they want, except they expect to be the ones at controls, the heads of government and theocracy. The rest of us are morons, and thus too stupid to live our lives, so the blessed leadership will...lead "hope" and "change".

35 The double standard is everywhere. Wilders gets prosecuted, while the protesters carry signs calling for his death. Is that not a hate crime? Obama goes to a church that basically hates white people, but people of color cannot be racist. the list goes on and on. Now we can see why every reality show has an angry Black Guy. I watch on Sports Center while the comentators excuse bad behavior of Black athletes because as a White person, they don't have the gravitas to comment on it. I really do not believe that the Black community really believes it. When everything is excused, what is the reason to excel. During my lifetime, I have watched as waves of immigrants, Koreans, Indians, and others, make their fortune through the Black community. Most cities have ethnic enclaves where people go to shop and eat in the resturants, Name the nationality and you can usually find a safe place in the community to eat or shop. Now, show me the city where you can go to a Black community in the evening for shopping or eating.  One thing good to come out of this is now people know that hate is being preached in some churches. I wonder if the Southern Poverty Law Center is going to start to monitor them? Everyone wants to be respected, but respect is one of those things that you have to give to get.

37 In case anyone cares, the writing on Wilder's "turban" in Westergaard's cartoon says, "Qur'an majeed", which means "the noble Qur'an". The writing was likely taken from a South Asian or Persian or other non-Arab source as the Arabs are wont to use the definite article, which doesn't exist in most other non-Arabic Muslim languages (such as Urdu, Persian, Turkish, Pashto).
