DoJ: Fast & Furious Was Definitely Not About Creating A Pretext For Increasing Gun Control
Elijah Cummings: Hey, Let's Expand Fast & Furious To Consider Increasing Gun Control

— Ace

Actually, tell a lie, I don't know if DoJ has expressly denied this theory. I'm not sure anyone has actually asked.

But either way, a program that deliberately put thousands of illegal arms into the hands of Mexican bandits and did not track those weapons, except via autopsy reports, is somehow morphing into a pretext for increasing gun control.

Hey, I've got a radical new gun control law: The ATF shall not deliberately put thousands of illegal arms into the hands of Mexican bandits and then not track them whatsoever except via autopsy reports.

Anyone up for that law?

Nah. Let's restrict guns generally. Actually cracking down on the specific parties responsible for the sale of these guns -- that would be the ATF -- is too direct a solution.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the leading Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released a report early Thursday titled “Outgunned,” that details how Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents say gun laws need to be tightened for them to fight organized crime along the U.S.-Mexico border.

hmm, wait. I see a pattern here.

1. Arm the bad guys.
2. Bad guys do violence.
3. Use the violence as a reason to get your gun laws passed.

...

1. Spend money.
2. Spend more money until everyone cries about the deficit.
3. Use the desire for deficit reduction as a reason to raise taxes, which is what you wanted in the first place.

We have to keep guns out of the hands of terrroooorrrriisssts! We need tighter regulations to keep terrorists from getting weapons! As if the terrorists are any more likely to be concerned with the tight restrictions on gun ownership than they were about the tight restrictions on hijacking aircraft! We must restrict plane ownership! We cannot allow planes to fall into the hands of terrorists!

This is what they teach you in public policy classes in college:  If you perceive a constituency that is "underserved", create a program to "serve" them.  If that screws something else up, then make another program to correct the screwup.  If that second program then screws something else up, then guess what?  You need a third program.

Clearly, we need a new department to oversee the operations of the BAFTE.  And maybe a new division of the BAFTE in charge of gun-running schemes.

41 If there are any memos or email floating aroudn where someone at Justice or the the ATF or the administration said that one of the silver linings of the program was that it might help with the gun-control debate (as a mitigating factor to the extra weapons circulating, unrestricted, in the US and Mexico) then that would be definite proof of one of the greatest offenses against America from inside the Executive branch, ever.  I cannot think of a single other incident that comes even close.  FDR's attempt to stack the Court was nothing compared to using Executive power to put the US in harm's way in order to push a political objective that violates the Constitution - to take Americans' individuals rights away from them directly.

They relegated who knows how many people to death so they could some obscure point.  There is no sensible argument for this program.  Even as a method to promote gun control, which is the most sensible of all of the idiot possibilities for this program, it is a huge stretch to think it would work.  Except for the rights under Fourth Amendment that we all enthusiastically relinquished, the Second Amendment has always been the line in the sand beyond which we were unwilling to go.  Their argument would have likely not succeeded even if they had made no bonehead mistakes.

74 I did a little investigating of the deal between Issa and Leahy that was made to allow Melson to testify to Issa's committee. Three nominees were to be confirmed, including James Cole as deputy attorney general. Well, who exactly is James Cole?

He is a recess appointment made by Dear Reader back in December. He is probably next in line for the AG spot (this is a guess). Here is a FoxNews quote about Mr. Cole:

The latter, James Cole, had been in limbo since he was nominated in May, though his name did clear the Senate Judiciary Committee over the summer. Republicans had questioned his past consulting work with bailed-out insurance giant AIG but had been particularly critical of his stance on prosecuting terror suspects.

That concern flared up again after Obama installed Cole on Wednesday. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, accused Cole of wanting to pursue terror suspects as a criminal matter in civilian courts. He cited a 2002 Legal Times column in which Cole called the Sept. 11 attacks "criminal acts of terrorism against a civilian population" -- like the Oklahoma City bombing.

Cole went on to write that the United States has faced "many forms of devastating crime," from the drug trade to organized crime to rape and child abuse. "The acts of Sept. 11 were horrible, but so are these other things," he wrote.

So if Holder winds up under the bus, this dude would wind up as at least acting AG for a while (again, I'm speculating here). Looks like the Progressives are planning ahead again.

82 I attend a college in Virginia that is located in a fairly crime-ridden community.  There have been burglaries, muggings, and even murders occurring at an even higher than average rate.  A few weeks ago, a student at this same college was murdered (he was shot on the front porch of his apartment).  It turns out that this student's uncle is Elijah Cummings.  He came down here last week and made a speech about gun control.  I understand his anger and frustration, but perhaps he should direct that anger towards the person who actually committed the crime and the city council that refuses to do anything about the recent uptick in violent crime.  It certainly couldn't hurt...

84 No, no, that just could never happen. Why our dear elite political class would never ever intentionally allow a stream of munitions to flow unhindered to Mexican crime syndicates to create bloodshed and death that would create the proof be used as moral cudgel to advance their disarmament agenda against the American  people. That was not a plan. It was just a lucky coincidence. All sarcasm aside, when even John Stewart can see this program as creating bloodshed for a political end what argument could possibly be offered as justification. Are we all just supposed to accept "Gee, didn't think that would happen!" or "That was not the intention of the program". Clearly the results of this program where pointed out and they where not only expected but desired.
