Dick Durbin: We Don't Have the Votes to Pass This Phony Jobs Bill
— Dave in Texas

But, uh, we can work on it. In a month or so.

I suppose this is progress. Now not only does Obama have to worry about taking his message to the people to persuade them to embrace his agenda, he also has to worry about persuading the Democrat majority in the Senate. And get them to embrace it too.

Which they, uhm, aren't doing.

This is the thing that confuses me about bullshit legislative proposals that have no meaning except to act like you're doing something because you're tanking in the polls: Don't you need your party, who still hold a majority in the Senate, to kinda act like they'll go along with this? Wouldn't that be kind of a big deal? I mean, to look serious and all.

Hey, President Jobs. Durbin and Reid have been dragging their feet, hemming and hawing, futzing around for weeks while you went out there, did your road trips and speeches and town halls, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but they didn't do shit for you man. They ain't doin shit for you now. You've been yelling "pass this bill" at anyone who's within earshot. Including Senate Democrats, who were certainly within earshot.

They ain't passin your bill. You're favorability rating among Senate Democrats is down to like, 37%.

You mad, bro?

Watergate caused Nixon to resign.

We've been hearing/reading suggestions for weeks that a Primary challenge to Obama would fail or would be bad for the party.

How would they feel if Biden resigned.  (Remember how we got Ford?)

Then, let the nasty stuff come forward and 'allow' Obama to resign rather than face impeachment.

This assumes that Obama would go along.

We now have President <insert name here> who the party thought would have a chance in hell in 2012.

Please tell me I'm having nightmares.

Most of the projections I've seen put it around +4, so the Senate would flip to 53-45-2 (though of course Bernie Sanders is a very reliable Dem vote, and Lieberman is fairly reliable on domestic issues, so it would be closer to 53-47 in practice).

Even with another big wave, +10 is probably beyond even the rosiest of projections.

The Powerline boys predicted this back on September 16 when a Friday night press conference of 36 Senators -- R and D -- called on the super-duper committee to do some Reagan-style tax reform. The Democrat Senate is not going to vote on this POS before their recess. When they come back, it's going to be "Jobs bill? Obama? Obama who?" And that, my friends, is the end of his presidency.

Barack wants this dinner to be fun, and he really loves getting to know supporters like you. I hope you'll take him up on it before Friday's deadline. Will you donate $3 or more today and be entered to have dinner with Barack? These dinners mean a lot to Barack. They're a chance for him to talk with a few of the people who are driving the campaign -- and a chance for him to say thank you. So come prepared to tell your story, and say whatever's on your mind. Don't miss the opportunity to be there. Donate $3 today, before the September 30th deadline. Thanks, Michelle

Close, but Spiggy Agnew made it through the '72 elections, and didn't resign 'til (I think) '74. Then Ford was picked, and was the Veep when Nixon decided he had no "power base" left in Congress and hung it up.

There was speculation that Tricky Dick wanted to dump Agnew before the election, but that didn't happen.

I think McCain gets a bum rap. His lifetime ACU rating is 82.61, admittedly lower than an Arizona heir of Ronald Reagan should have, but not bad. And his 2009 rating was 96 and his 2010 rating was a perfect 100. He's opposed Obama when it's counted.

Posted by: Leo Ladenson at September 29, 2011 09:02 PM (mAm+G)

Bullshit; he opposed Obama in 2010 because he was running for re-election and knew that his constituents were tired of his crossing the aisle garbage.  If he saw any advantage (or no election disadvantage) in stabbing conservatives in the back, preferably in a high exposure setting, he'd have jumped on it faster than his fatassed daughter would a krispy kreme.

Who says the stuttering clusterf*** of a miserable failure is doing any such thing? If you look at the polls, the general public -- millions of flatliners -- thinks the Repubs in Congress are as culpable as the Dems, if not more so.

It's pore ol' Osama Obama who is being whipsawed.

I wouldn't be so sure we'll get the Senate next year, either. Even if the Traitor-in-Chief bags it or loses to a Repub, the government-owes-me-stuff-from-its-stash crowd will be voting hot and heavy to make sure the ol' mazooma keeps rolling their way.

Any improvement would be a friggin' miracle.

96 27 well, I'm not CAC, but as far as the Senate goes, it looks like this to me:
MT, VA, NE, MO, ND - looking good
WI, FL - also hopeful
WV, NM, OH - maybe
PA, MI - ????
and the only ones that R's are in any danger of losing are ME and MA
so I don't think it is out of the question to think that the R's will have 57-58 seats in the Senate

Posted by: chemjeff at September 29, 2011 08:44 PM (s7mIC)

I had to circle back to CJ's post earlier after making my > +4 comment.  Here's my take:

MT, VA, NE, MO, ND - looking good
WI, FL - also hopeful
WV, NM, OH - maybe
PA, MI - ????

Red is what is going to happen.  MT and ND are in the "libertarian, but gimme them sweet subsidies" west, WI is a probable, but old habits die hard.  I like an R pickup, but it's early to guess that.  In WV, Manchin is fairly safe - he's "blue dogging" as hard as he can, and it's not entirely fertile R territory yet, plus they tend to elect senators for life out there.  NM is functionally blue statewide, but it's close, so we'll see.  OH is similar, but for different reasons - still very strong blue-collar union vote present.  Watch the statewide referendum on state employees' unions to see which way this will break.

PA and MI will make any conservative into Don Quixote.  I hope we get to mount a windmill or two above the fireplace next year, but voting is cultural, not just intellectual.  MI and PA are old-line dem strongholds, even with recent changes on the ground.  MI is more likely than PA, in my opinion.  PA is a damned tease every cycle, and there's never a happy ending.

There's your prediction, brought to you by yet another dorky scientist.

If he loses, he's a loser.  If he steps aside due to illness, he becomes an elder statesman to the party, and Dems will immediately start to rewrite history and claim that the campaign was turning in his favor.  It will be portrayed as a sacrifice for the good of the country.

Obama is a first class narcassist. If he loses, he will spend the rest of his life pulling a Jimmah Carter, meddling in things he has no business in, living in the Green Room at MSNBC and trying to convince us that America made a mistake in 2012.....probably because of racism/Bush's mess/the Supreme Court/Fox News/hurricanes/voters are busy on Tuesday.......................

So guaranteeing a (R-whomever) win is a sacrifice for the good of the country, as opposed to ekeing out a possible 50.1-49.9 victory?  Alex, I hope you are correct.  That's the kind of "we all have to make sacrifices" kind of sacrifice I can get waaaaaayyyy behind.

As far as history, it sure seems like Carter is the only one pushing any rewrites in his favor.  If the Won pulls this move, the dems will throw his thin-skinned ass down the old memory hole as fast as they can.

Yes, white Obama should work out great.

The purging of 2010 should pay off really well going forward - all the "moderate" democrats are unemployed and unimportant.  As far as national figures go, all they have left are the true believers, and neither right ("goddamn socialists"), left ("not socialist enough"), nor independent ("ooh, the Tardashians are on") could care about them any less.

I doubt he's even capable of harboring the thought that he might not win.

He could be 30 points down in the polls and he'd still be convinced that he'll be re-elected.  In his mind he's entitled to a second term, and can't imagine that someone as awesome as himself could possibly lose.

That's what I was pointing to in my first post.  Fire Biden (he resigns, for public consumption.).  Replace him with the Dem's new choosen one.  Bring Impeachment hearings against Obama.  Obama resigns to avoid Impeachment.  The Choosen one then becomes the Dem nominee in 2012.

All of the knife fighting takes place naming the new VP while Obama is still President.  If they're smart, it takes place before the public knows a new VP is even needed.   The MSM would fall all over themselves helping out on the messaging.

All of this assumes, of course, that Biden would be willing to retire.

210 Fuloydo, I don't think that you could slip a new VP under the radar - it's kind of a major event - something that only happend once before under Nixon (yeah they really want that comparison floating while Fast & Furious/Solyendra are still fresh).  Also, Obama can name all he wants, but it's the House of Representatives that approves - sort of a substitute mini-election.  If they slow-rolled it long enough and Obama were impeached or quit then it's Bohner who will take over.  Not a viable possibility for the dem brain-trust.

jewells, Here is what I hope is a simple embed instruction with added info about a handy site to shorten and store linkies. When I find a good link for something but can't use it right away, I "store" it in bitly.  You can make an account for yourself by going to www.bitly.com.  It's less hassle than tiny url.  Pixie doesn't like long links, so using a short one from the get-go is a good practice.

So let's say you see an article you want to save.  Go to the start of the address at the top of the page and type: bit.ly/

Move your cursor to the end of the address and hit "enter."  It will automatically take you to your bitly page and show you your compacted link. (Bitly will store all of your saved web addresses in chronological order.  Once you click on "copy," it will flash to tell you it's holding it in memory, waiting for you to use it.)

Now, back at the HQ, Type your witteh comment, underlining the words in your message you want used for the link by highlighting them.  Click on the (chain) link icon above and paste your link in the box in the top right.  Ignore all those other empty boxes.  Click on the "insert" box, and then "OK."

Once you click "post," your handy-dandy embedded link is shared with Moron Nation.
