Dennis Miller: We're Living In Odd Times When Miss California Gets Tougher Questions Than the President
— Ace

But of course. She, like Joe the Plumber before her, needs to be "vetted."

Obama doesn't.

That quote was from O'Reilly five minutes ago; no link or vid.

Here's one of Obama's tough questions.

Speaking of enchanted...

Is that the gayest video I've ever posted? Au contraire. The New York Times "reporter's" enchanted question was the gayest. That song from Wicked is only the second gayest.

22 This dovetails nicely with Andrew Klavan's recent piece:

For many years, conservatives have been complaining about the left-wing bias of both the mainstream media and popular culture. The two are intimately connected because, over and above commercial success, the culture and the artists who create it are empowered by reviews, prestige and awards that the mainstream media bestow, facilitate and publicize.

But it’s now become clear that conservatives are wrong. The media are not biased against the right. They are openly hostile towards us. They are openly attempting to crush one point of view and elevate another. This is not a conspiracy. It is simply the result of a poisonous conformity, a climate of opinion which the MSM, populated almost exclusively by liberals, barely even realize they inhabit.

But in allowing themselves to become immersed in this climate, the bulk of the American media have now become the toadies of the state and the enemies of the people.

37 Another snippet from Klavan, because I think it is appropriate to the subject. Sorry  Ace, hope your ok with the long post.

So all right, now we know. The media are the enemies of the people and they are protecting the culture for the proponents of the state. And now that we do know, it’s time for us to fight back. By us, I mean artists, journalists, thinkers, foundations, investors—anyone who tells stories, makes music or pictures or reacts to them with criticism, ideas, money and praise.

We need to build a New American Culture, and turn our backs on the culture of the state. We need to stop according respect or credence to reviews and awards that are used as social engineering tools to force the culture into anti-American state worship. We need to build an infra-structure of funding, review attention and awards to give praise, purpose and prestige to those artists who stand outside the MSM’s climate of opinion.

Whereas I, Renaissance man that I am, still believe that a picture is worth a thousand words.  Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres understood that truth is seen and felt before it is understood; his "Odalisque" is like a caress. 141 But, sometimes I like the knobs fiddled with like the tuner on an old radio. Or licked like a dripping ice cream cone on a hot summer day.

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again.
For then the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.

Come, as thou cam'st a thousand times,
A messenger from radiant climes,
And smile on thy new world, and be
As kind to others as to me.

Or, as thou never cam'st in sooth,
Come now, and let me dream it truth.
And part my hair, and kiss my brow,
And say My love! why sufferest thou?

Come to me in my dreams, and then
By day I shall be well again.
For then the night will more than pay
The hopeless longing of the day.

152 The lyrics are pretty appropriate too. Nice call by Sean or his producer.

O Fortuna (Chorus) in Latin English translation

O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!

O Fortune,
like the moon
Stands constantly changing,
ever waxing
or waning;
hateful life
now oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.

Fate - monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
stand malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.

Fate, in health
and virtue,
is against me
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the string man,
everyone weep with me!

Hey, if quoting love poetry to comely lasses by the moonlight in order to get my hands on their boobs is wrong, then I don't wanna be right. All that crap I learned in college has to be good for something, dammit!

Take a hint from Molly Bloom, ladies:

"...I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes."

A taste of Britain's use of teh torture:

... All of these men had been held at Bad Nenndorf, a small, once-elegant spa resort near Hanover. Here, an organisation called the Combined Services Detailed Interrogation Centre (CSDIC) ran a secret prison following the British occupation of north-west Germany in 1945.

CSDIC, a division of the War Office, operated interrogation centres around the world, including one known as the London Cage, located in one of London's most exclusive neighbourhoods. Official documents discovered last month at the National Archives at Kew, south-west London, show that the London Cage was a secret torture centre where German prisoners who had been concealed from the Red Cross were beaten, deprived of sleep, and threatened with execution or with unnecessary surgery.

As horrific as conditions were at the London Cage, Bad Nenndorf was far worse. Last week, Foreign Office files which have remained closed for almost 60 years were opened after a request by the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act. These papers, and others declassified earlier, lay bare the appalling suffering of many of the 372 men and 44 women who passed through the centre during the 22 months it operated before its closure in July 1947.

I spewed coke when I heard Miller do the Helen Thomas crack. That was great. How sad is it though, the toughest question came from that CBS radio dude, and Barry didn't even answer it? Gawd, what an useless waste of time! The president AND that shitty excuse for a presser. I can't wait to find out if that Fox show that they played instead of Barry had good ratings or not. Oh, BTW, how come no one posted that old "Some Enchanted Evening" song from South Pacific? Surely that was what was on the NYT's guy's Ipod right before he got to the WH to ask his question. 256

Off-topic, but I'm going to repost what I posted on the J-Pod thread, simply because I think my plan will work.

Are you ready to be even more pissed off?  Then read the Hot Air article about the NRSC getting ready to kneecap Toomey, by, get this, supporting Tom Ridge against him in the primary.  Orrin Hatch, the fucking weasel, makes a comment about how Toomey "can't win" and basically says "fuck you" or the Mormon equivalent.  Cornyn is more equivocal, but the fact is that he shouldn't be.  Toomey beat Specter fair and square.

Furthermore, Hatch is lying through his teeth about their reasons.  Toomey obviously can, and most likely will win against a Specter already on the ropes after a primary loss.  I know that Lieberman did win against Lamont, but there's a difference:  Lieberman was an honest man, who got dumped by an unhinged Democrat primary electorate, whereas Specter is a chickenshit who got the fuck out of dodge when things got tough.  A young, vibrant Toomey will wipe the floor with a 79-year-old Specter.

The real reason that these pieces of dogshit are contemplating such an evil backstab is simple:  they realize it could happen to them too.  Hatch would be particularly vulnerable, since he's basically a RINO in a hard-right state.  A Republican challenging Hatch, if he won, would be almost certain to win a Senate seat.  The same basically goes for Cornyn, if not quite to the same degree.

Basically, they are trying to throw the election to the Democrats in order to keep any Republican from ever making a primary challenge, ever again.

By the way, this is not the first time this has happened.  In 2006, the NRSC actually urged Democrats to register as Republicans in the RI primary to vote for leftist RINO Lincoln Chafee against moderate conservative Lachey.  The Democrats then proceeded to vote for the Democrat candidate against a victorious Chafee, who went down to defeat in the general election (not that it mattered much).  What the NRSC was actuallly doing--and which they have never admitted--was making sure that plenty of Democrat voters became interested in the election, in order to punish Lachey (whom they expected--wrongly--to win) for challenging one of Their People.

What can you do?

First, call Cornyn at 202-224-2934 and Hatch at 202-224-5251 while you are still pissed.  Make them piss their pants.

Second, I propose the Got Toomey's Back Pledge Fund.  Every member of the GTBPF will make the following pledge:

I pledge to contribute a significant amount of money [the amount will vary according to the individual] to the primary challenger of any Republican Senator who supports anyone other than Toomey for the US Senate seat from Pennsylvania.

In my case, I'll start with $50 for each challenger.  I'm not a rich man.  However, I will try to make it more.

Let's make this one go viral.

I was listening to the presser while cutting up an old friend.  I really liked that ash.  Stupid mindless borers.  A mere handful can kill a mature ash.  They eat the critical sap-carrying parts of the tree, but they girdle the thing instead of working on a patch or going vertical.  That's why I needed the beers.  What a fucking waste.  Where was I?  Oh yeah.

Operating a chainsaw while Obama speaks is about the most therapeutic thing you can do.

This is serious shit, people.  Think of it this way:  these people literally want us dead.  Dead people don't suck on blondes' and redheads' tits.

Besides, I get a hard-on at the thought of final victory and putting all the Democrat leaders, and their RINO buttboys, against the wall in front of a firing squad.  Call me a sick fuck, but it's true.

Off topic, but:  "CSI" had Ed Asner appearing in character, as a poisonous fucking WWII Nazi masquerading as a pious Jew in NYC.

In real life, of course, Asner is both Jewish AND a fucking crypto-fascist.

Nicely dealt, Gary Sinese!!!

Also on the program was Cenozoic Age comedian Shelley Berman, as an Auschwitz survivor.

It's amazing how some guys seem to live forever.  Berman (born 1926) looks like a million bucks, while Asner (1929) looks like a bucket of shit left out in the sun too long.

Which he is.

I remember when Berman had a hit comedy "album"  in 19-fracking-59 .

Remember those, morons?   Comedy albums?  Remember 1959?

Of course you don't:  you were then all nothing more than gleams in the eyes of your grandparents' beatnik diploid sex cells, one of which said "Let's split".

Badda-bing.

Actually, that last post didn't come out quite as I intended...put it this way, I believe victory will be ours in the end, but only after a fight, and this excites me.

Anyway...you know, about authority figures:  I had a female boss once who was actually several years older than me, but wow, whatabod.  And yeah, I knew her rich hubby paid for her plastic surgery, but she still gave me a hard-on.  She always was a little on the strict side, and oddly enough, that turned me on even more.  (Of course she wasn't particularly strict with me, because I was one of her best employees).

So anyway, one day she and I were alone in the stockroom, and she bent over to pick up something.  I'd read Penthouse forum before, and I'd always thought it was bullshit, but then...

She got up and left the room.  Of course it was bullshit.  But at least I got to check out her ass.

Hopefully I'm not some masochist pussy.

Obama got asked the usual "minorities hardest hit" question.  I wonder when the answer is gonna be, "hey, I'm not gonna be the one to look a white family in the face and tell them to go to the back of the line because they have the wrong skin color."

Just wonderin' when the racism ends is all.

"Is there some quality that alerts you to the fact that a man is just a well-attired pansy, or do you just ignore that and go for the Frum type while dissing a hard-working man in his work clothes?"

Ken-

The pansy men are always soft-looking.  Blech.

I hate it when a man has soft hands (unless he's a surgeon).  A hard-working man in his work clothes can be as sexy as one in a tux, as long as he doesn't have chili stains on his wifebeater-covered beer gut.  I think we women love men in uniforms (military especially) because of the type of men that are drawn to those professions.  Fuck women's lib - most women want a man who can-and will- fight or kill to protect them.

My fav - Tom Selleck in Navy dress whites from Magnum, PI.

429 New conservative sellout writers theme:  Obama is a pragmatist in "socialist times" caused by Bush.  Hehehe -- Kathleen Parker:

After 100 days, I think I’ve figured it out. Obama is Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. (Muhammad Ali to the more recently born.) Always above the fray, he floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee.

First 100 days? Really? Has it only been that long?

Let me begin by saying, thank God, Allah, and Zeus that they’re over.

As a recovering obsessive-compulsive, the past 100 days have been a torture of quantification. How’s he doing SO far? Is he the change we’ve been waiting for? Is Barack Obama really a centrist, as so many (including I) had hoped? Or is he one of them dadgum fascist-Marxist-commie-Moozlems?!

Obama is who he said he is—a pragmatist. It just so happens that pragmatism under present circumstances demands/justifies/warrants what are rather socialist solutions. The president is in the unique position of being able to say with face straight and heart true: I’m not a lefty ideologue. It’s just that Republican leadership has left us in the sort of economic free fall that only Big Government can rescue.

435 "How about a spread sheet on who's had sex in the last day?"

Hell, that would mean everyone on this thread, in the last hour or three.

Martha,

Almost anyone in Canada, at least in Ontario, who's a guy and drinks beer, which is most of 'em, has a beer fridge on the back porch or in the garage.
Most midwesterners are kinda similar.  At least the ones living near Ontario, which includes northern Ohio, Northern Pennsylvania, Northern Indiana, most of Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.  Maybe it's them amazing Great Lakes.

The back porch fridge is only for summer use.  The garage fridge is year 'round.

I also keep a couple watermelons in my beer fridge most weeks in the summer.  You can't get too much ice cold watermelon in the summer, and you don't want to take up valuable kitchen space with the beer.

Basement beer fridges work, too, if you party downstairs.

445 Speaking of hot men, this piece about Hugh Jackman made me laugh, then lust: "I work out imagining I'm Wolverine," he said. "Wolverine to me is the guy that when everybody else quits, that's where he begins. I think that's why people love him." But Hugh said the biggest change was in his diet. "I think we've wiped out entire gene pools of chickens," he said. "I know to any vegetarians out there, I really apologize. It's just so much tofu you can eat." The product of his work is evident on screen -- and at home. "At first [my wife] was like, 'Hugh, this is ridiculous, look at you,'" he said. "'I don't know who you are -- now get into bed,'" he continued, laughing. Luckiest. Woman. In. The. World. Cannot wait for Friday. Happy birthday to me! http://tinyurl.com/c4embs

My sister doesn't like him either, but I doubt if you'd want to be lumped with her.

I don't have a wild urge to do him, but I'd think he was handsome from a cold-blooded viewpoint.

Please tell me you don't like George "make fun of Charleton Heston after he gets Alzheimer's" "the Cowardly Pussy" Clooney, though.

Hmm, is this a large enough sampling to conclude that Brad Pitt is only attractive to liberal women or flat-chested women?

Let's face it, if you're a liberal woman and you want a masculine man, you're gonna have to settle for Janet Napolitano with a strap on.

499 Just for the non-believers, I dug up the questions that Bush was given on the pressers closest to his 100-day mark (Bush didn't have a Holy 100th Day of Celebration like St. TelePrompTer, as he was working on his 100th day at the Conference of the Americas).

Here are some of the questions from the press corp that we all know just luuuuuuuved them some GWB!  Check out these softballs!

Q: Mr. President, in the last few weeks you have rolled back health and safety and environmental measures proposed by the last administration, and other previous administrations. This has been widely interpreted as a payback time to your corporate donors. Are they more important than the American people's health and safety? And what else do you plan to repeal?

Q. Mr. President, why do you refuse to respect the wall between the church and state? And you know that the mixing of religion and government, for centuries, has led to slaughter. The very fact that our country has stood in good stead by having this separation -- why do you break it down?

Q. Sir, on the air strikes in Iraq, the Pentagon is now saying that most of the bombs used in those strikes missed their targets. Given that, what is now your assessment of how successful those strikes were, how much danger do the remaining installations that we missed in those strikes pose to our forces?

Q. Mr. President, go back to the controversies surrounding former President Clinton and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Are you at all concerned that these controversies are serving as a distraction for your administration's agenda? Are you concerned that further Congressional hearings will mean that lawmakers are spending more time on those matters than are working on your policies?

Q. You've talked a lot about areas of the budget that are going to increase: education, today you talked about Medicare, you talked before a little bit about defense. You haven't talked much about the areas where to come in with a budget that's going to be responsible you'll have to do some cuts.

Q. Mr. President, are you really going to let Republicans in Congress go home for the next recess without some kind of other shortterm relief? You know the Democrats are after you and the Vice President, saying you're a couple of former oil men protecting the industry. Would you at least support the Republican bill in the House which would ease some emission standards in California?

Q. Given what's going on with energy prices and the difficulties in the economy, can you assure the American people at the start of your term that they'll be better off at the end of it than they are today? And if they're not, should they blame you?

Tenant is lovely lovely man; too bad I'm not a big Who fan, though my friends are working hard on that. And have never understood the appeal of George Clooney. He is the diet version of Cary Grant; once you go Grant you never go back. And mmmm, Hugh Laurie. I think I'm attracted to the actors who look like they are actually intelligent offscreen; Alan Rickman is another fab example. The bleached-blonde actors who look like they have the brains of a pomeranian just don't do anything for me. And I have never, never understood the sex appeal of Obama. Guy looks like if he wouldn't critique your technique right after doing it, he would the next day to all his friends, and not care if you find out. Is a total egoist; you want that in the bedroom? On the subject of sexy, here's something really weird.

Tom Cruise is actually a sexual vampire who sucks the sex appeal out of sexy women.

Mimi Rogers:  heartbreakingly beautiful woman with huge boobs; married Tom Cruise and became an old lady.

Nicole Kidman:  sexy Australian hottie; married Tom Cruise and somehow ended up looking beautiful but empty.

Penelope Cruz:  went from looking like an ultrasexy Mexicana to looking like a fish.

Katy Holmes:  really hot young brunette; married Tom Cruise and, from what I've seen, looks much worse than before.

Even Demi Moore, who just starred in a movie with him, up until A Few Good Men, was the hottest woman in the world, and now looks like a female DI.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Kurt and Goldies son (I think that is their only child together) got interested in hockey, so they moved to colorado or something so he could play in leagues that are actually leagues, and he stayed interested in hockey, so, so that the boy could have every opportunity and the best training in something that he enjoys doing, they live in canada (they are still US citizens in. . .colorado or one of those other cold states and stuff)

Sounds trite, but I think that's a cool story, kinda like. . ..

And yet she's a raving beauty compared to Madonna Louise Ciccione, Penn's previous wife.

Also loved him in Rebecca. Why are real actors such an endangered species nowadays? Is a shame; someone should alert Peta to that; could do a campaign for Save the Actor Kittens or something.

Yeah, I know he turned out ot be a douchebag, but I was young. The Marlboro Man-verrrry sexxxxy. I love a man in a suit, tux, etc., but you can tell if it is a "man" in a suit, or a David Frum in a suit. The casterati type are easy for most wimmin to spot. At least Conservative wimmins. I can do w/o great looks or clothes for brains and raw sex appeal. Manly, not metrosexual faggyness. If a guy shaves his chest smoother than my legs, he's ghey. If he has a better mani than me, and I've just left the salon, he's ghey. If he stops to glance in every mirror he passes, he's ghey. It is o.k. for guys to have ugly feet, be hairy and not know how to match. Should be required.

The reason they thought she was hot was that every single move she made was deliberately sexual.  But the problem, of course, was that it was deliberate.  Anyone who actually took a good look at her could see that she had no sexual warmth, unlike, say, Marilyn Monroe.  She didn't come across as a fun but slutty girl who you'd enjoy banging; she came across as a cold-blooded whore who was playing you for money.

Put it this way:  if I ran into a really innocent-looking woman like, say, Lynda Carter, in a bar, I'd think, "She doesn't belong here.  I'd need a ring on her finger to score."

If I ran into Marilyn Monroe in a bar, I'd think, "Yes!!!!! I am going to nail this hot little slut!"

However, if I ran into Madonna into a bar, I'd think, "OK, which one of these guys is working with her in trying to rob me?"

Men come off as superficial, but we really aren't, it's the bravado of cowardice.  The baddest ass on the planet is affraid of a woman he is genuinely attracted to, so we make our choices, not just because your body fit's our profile, but because we like the woman, not just her body.

621 Joan, definately keep them natural. I was always small chested, up until about 10 yrs ago when I finally started putting on weight. I was so skinny I didn't have any of anything. Now that I have a pretty healthy set, I like the way they look, but the back aches suck. Also, I guess cause I came by mine later, they haven't started the sag, but I figure it's only a matter of time. I would love to lose 10 lbs, I'm not fat just way too curvy for 5'2. 633 along di butlers point, have a childhood friend (literally childhood, as in less than a year old, and we even have the pictures of our naked asses in the bathtub together, childhood friend kind of friend)  She was petite all the time she grew up, and then (well this is kinda a bad thing, by a lot) she had a "false pregnancy," I think it was called, but she swore she was a virgine, but there was something that triggered her body to freak out, and her parents thought she was pregnant, what it was the ovary syst stuff, that became an actuall cancer or something, and then here body went through hell for about a year, but when it was done, she still had a slim waiste but now she had GIGUNDOUS juggs.

That's not the best example, maybe the better one is, I had a tall slim girlfriend who was hot, but she had fake boobs, and everytime we had sex, she would remind me of the fact I told her that "It's not just the look, they actually look good, but I can feel that they are fake."

She would lay that on me everytime.

Sorry for the yappy stuff, I just hate HATE HATE DESPISE, WANT TO HUNT DOWN AND KILL! the men who have made women so self conscious about themselves that we have promoted a culture of self mutilation in order to satisfy the visual desires of pigs like Heffner, and men who think of themselves as property owners, manipulating a woman into being something other than what she is.

But I don't think that's what you were looking for. * I love men in uniform because I can be pretty sure that guy loves the things I love ( and he's generally pretty handy to have around as well as interesting) And finally, I think that was quite possibly the best video to pair with that clip of the WH press whores. 666 The right had better get its plans together on how to create it own "15 pt. advantage" to the MSM, schools, etc. My suggestions: 1. No withholding tax. Taxes due before election date. Show the price tag to the voters. 2. School choice. Castrate the union. 3. All tax credits (including to corporations) must be called "public subsidy" from now on, and cannot be considered "tax cuts" but an increase in subsidy. I am sure there are some other ideas...

that would be the best thing, but it would be regressive to those many who pay no taxes or get subsidies in the form of the EITC. no way you could ever sell this to the public.

We don't have a tax problem. We have a spending problem. But it's damn hard to convince people that they have to pay eventually. Shit, that's how we got the housing bubble...

683 a lot of folks , especially low wage earning women filing head of household receive the earned income tax credit, they not only have no fed income tax liability, but they get a subsidy, a transfer of wealth in the form of that credit.

684 "That would be the best thing, but it would be regressive to those many who pay no taxes or get subsidies in the form of the EITC. no way you could ever sell this to the public." No it would not, because there is the personal deduction which can easily create a "negative income tax" for the extremely poor - this is Milton Friedman's idea. Not to mention that many countries now have this kind of tax, from HK to Russia. There may be a very good opportunity coming up if we get stagnation for some serious economic reforms and this should be one of them.

685 XbradTC, That's why I suggest the elimination of withholding taxes and moving tax day to within one week of elections. Pay your taxes and then vote. Otherwise there is a disconnect with the price we pay and the product we get.

that would work, the standard ded would have to be very high but that would work if u received a credit for the "negative" tax liability up to a ceiling. might also work to have that and 3 different rates with no itemized deductions or any credits

687 Yes we have a serious spending problem but we also have a serious tax problem.  There are some cities where a nurse and a cop make over $250 grand together with overtime and they are by no means wealthy.  Yet, in those same cities the truly wealthy pay less tax.  It is very inequitable.  A lot of people, when you ask them, are embarassed not to pay any tax, they want to pay something, they want to contribute, if only a little, it is a pride thing.

@153: I'll see your O Fortuna and raise you a Confederate war prayer:

"Oh, God of Battles, once again,
With banner, trump, and drum,
And garments in the wine-press dyed,
To give Thee thanks, we come.

No goats or bullocks garlanded,
Unto Thine altars go;
With brothers' blood, by brothers shed,
Our glad libations flow,

From pest-house and from dungeon foul,
Where, maimed and torn, they die,
From gory trench and charnal house,
Where, heap on heap they lie.

In every groan that yields a soul,
Each shriek a heart that rends,
With every breath of tainted air,
Our homage, Lord, ascends.

We thank Thee for the sabre's gash,
The cannon's havoc wild;
We bless Thee for the widow's tears,
The want that starves her child!

We give Thee praise that Thou hast lit
The torch and fanned the flame;
That lust and rapine hunt their prey,
Kind Father, in Thy name!

That, for the songs of idle joy
False angels sang of yore,
Thou sendest War on earth - ill-will
To men for evermore!

We know that wisdom, truth and right
To us and ours are given;
That Thou hast clothed us with the wrath,
To do the work of Heaven.

We know that plains and cities waste
Are pleasant in Thine eyes -
Thou lov'st a hearthstone desolate,
Thou lov'st a mourner's cries.

Let not our weakness fall below
The measure of Thy will
And while the press has wine to bleed,
Oh, tread it with us still!

Teach us to hate - as Jesus taught
Fond fools, of yore, to love;
Give us Thy vengeance as our own,
Thy pity, hide above!

Teach us to turn, with reeking hands,
The pages of Thy Word,
And learn the blessed curses there,
On them that sheathe the sword.

Where'er we tread may deserts spring,
'Til none are left to slay;
And when the last red drop is shed,
We'll kneel again - and pray!"

Posted by: drjohn at April 30, 2009 05:19 AM (Rfj7X)

745 teej:

You know, I really hate "top 10" lists. There really is no such thing. There is probably a "top 1000" -- that is, culturally foundational books that are essential to understanding how we came to be where we are. The Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the Christian Bible (probably the King James Version, since that's what the Founders had), etc. And lists differ whether you're talking fiction, history, poetry, whatever.

I think every American should read both Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn (and probably The Scarlet Letter, though I'm less fond of that book). They are foundational works of American fiction.  I'd also simply assume that most people have read Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm; that they've read at least one Shakespeare tragedy (my preference is Othello, but I'm weird that way -- Julius Caesar is the common choice). And being a libertarian in sensibility, I would highly recommend Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead (I'm not all that fond of Atlas Shrugged as a novel). I'd highly recommend reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress.

I also argue that at least some exposure to poetry is essential. I am a fan of Matthew Arnold and Wallace Stevens, but my favorite poet (perhaps inevitably) is Walt Whitman. Leaves of Grass is another of those things I thing every American should read. T. S. Eliot and Theodore Roethke are good modern poets. And there are some epic poems and sagas that fall into the "foundational document" category: Seamus Heaney did a splendid translation of Beowulf several years ago; and Robert Fagles did really muscular and robust translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey.

And this is just literature. The field of non-fiction -- history, philosophy, biography, etc. -- is vast, and there are so many important books that I can't even list them here.

Is it a lot of reading? Yes. But remember that the point is to read for content and comprehension, and for enjoyment. If you approach the reading of books in the same way a workman approaches the building of a wall, you're not going to get much out of it. It requires effort and time, certainly, but it pays off splendidly.

Good starting list, Monty.

Othello's my favorite, too.  Iago's stuck with me way more than I would ever admit (except online to the entire world, like now).

F451 was great.  Even better than 1984, in my opinion.

James Joyce was neat to read, too.  Never read Ulysses, but my HS English teacher pulled about six of her students to read Portrait of the Artist on our own, as a group report thing for almost an entire semester.  Fascinating to me at the time.

I'm with you on Scarlet Letter.  Meh.  The writing style failed to draw me in.  Kinda like Pride & Prejudice.  I was a total bookworm as a kid, and P&P was the first book I ever started that never got finished.

I've always been a fan of quoting William Butler Yeats when it came to wooing teh wimmenz.

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

751 reason:

I never was a fan of the usual "Romantic" poets (Keats, Byron, etc.). I was always more of a John Donne guy myself. Samuel Coleridge Taylor, Cowper, those guys. They could write a good love poem, but not smarmy junk -- their poetry had balls. In fact, that's why my favorite of Shakespeare's sonnets is #130 ("My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun") -- only Willy the Shake could take such shots at his ladylove and still get by on it.
