Democrats Oout Of Touch? Nah! - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Perhaps I've miscalculated, but are they claiming that those making minimum wage are spending $300 per month on a used car payment?

What planet are they on?

For more, check them out on Twitter.

Yeah, if they're talking annually. I get $18.5K gross (9.25 * 40 * 50) per annum and a net of $1,233/month take home.

If that's your budget, a $300 car payment is an interesting priority. And a heck of a nice used car.

51 Five questions: Under whose policies will the minimum wage lose two percent of its value?

Why will the minimum wage lose two percent of its value?

This tweet seems to suggest that private ownership of a vehicle is either the only safe, or at least safest, way to commute. What about the wonders of public transportation?

Commuting by way of privately owned vehicles dramatically increases emissions. Why do the Democrats hate Mother Earth so much? Seems to me saving all of humanity is one great reason not to raise the minimum wage.

Why have a wage at all? What about pursuing our dreams through the miracle of Funemployment?

52 Posted by: Frumious Bandersnatch at April 30, 2014 01:14 PM (JtwS4) FFS, my wife's car payment is only $279/month for what was (at the time) a new Corolla with the extended warranty. Granted we spread the payments out over 60 months, which perhaps someone who is "subprime" couldn't do. Although I'll say this "Cash for Clunkers" really upset the cheap car market. Having said that, in 2k7 when I bought the mighty Chevy Aveo, I picked up a used with 10k miles on it car for just about 10k. Now I had to have my dad cosign on the loan (later I refinanced and took him off, it's been paid off for a year or two now) but my payments even then were still only about $190/month. And as things go, a 10k used car is on the higher end of the "non-luxury" market. (I bought it because I wanted something with low miles and preferably the balance of the factory warranty on it, unsurprisingly I had to use that warranty once or twice )

II of all, no, it's not that those making minimum wage are spending $300 per month on a used car. It's that those making minimum wage should be able to afford a nice (read upper end Toyota) new car every two years. What? Do you hate the poor or something?

66 I really wonder what the f* they are thinking. I bought my first 2-3 cars for around $300 TOTAL. As others have pointed out, they ruined the used car market for the items I used to drive. Even taking into account inflation, my typical car would have cost around $800-$1000.

Posted by: Lizzy at May 01, 2014 06:35 AM (8zTpe)

69 Federal minimum wage is presently $7.25 per hour. I suppose, in all fairness, I should also take into consideration that, at $15k per year, if even one child is involved, then they don't have to spend that 15k a year on housing or food. If you have free or reduced-rate housing, and food stamps, and Medicaid, and the rest of your earnings are yours to do with as you see fit, then perhaps a car payment/insurance/maintenance/gas isn't out of the question.

82 I have a theory, and also an insecure need for people to comment on my theories, so if you'll give this one a minute of your time, I'd appreciate it.

You remember how torture became a Hollywood theme for a few brief years toward the end of Boosh, and it was no accident...?

Well, I've noticed a lot of imagery (way more than ever before) coming out of Hollywood lately of people being blinded, and having very bad things done to their eyes. It's even making a star appearance on a significant number of posters.

Now... if you understand anything at all about l*bs, it's that they like to egg and prod and gloat and point and laugh, especially behind people's backs. Given this fact, I think they're specifically greenlighting and putting out stories laden with this imagery because they are laughing at what they're currently getting over on everybody.

What do you think?

105 -

The way the "bad credit" car dealers work is, they find out how much money you make (you give them copies of your paycheck stubs), they tell you how much you can afford to pay (having a down payment helps, but it's not necessary).

So let's say they decide you can afford $300 a month. They will make you sign over direct withdrawal from your checking accoung, twice a month at $150.

Then they will show you the cars on their lot you can buy. These are not nice cars. Not even close. You don't worry about your interest rate, you don't worry about paying your other bills, you get to keep the car as long as those $150 withdrawals from your account continue to not bounce.

If they do, they take the car back. And sell it to the next schmuck who shows up on their lot.

Case in point- my oldest brother got a degree in Radio & TV Broadcasting JUST AS the RTV boom of the late 80s died. Whoops. But I guess I should flesh out my comment by saying- If your *plan* is to support yourself or a family on an FTE minimum-wage income, You're doing it wrong. People who don't plan that can sometimes get caught (usually temporarily) in that trap, but those people aren't calling for an increase in the minimum wage- they're looking for a way to get a better job.

But it certainly would give the poor an incentive to keep inflation under control, wouldn't it?

It hasn't hit just yet (soon...) but O'Care appears that it will cost me over $18K/year over what I pay now. When that comes, I will be selling some cars.

Fuck these fucking fucks in their fucking fuckholes.

PS: I've never worked for minimum wage except for about 3 months at 19 when I first hired on at a corporate outfit--'cause I had and have a work history of 1) showing up when I was fucking scheduled to, 2) doing the fucking job I was hired to do, 3) doing any other job I'm asked to do while there.

Now, I do understand that a 3% raise on $7.25 per hour still does not put you into the money, but after a year in a minimum wage job such as fast food, you've outlasted most of the others and SHOULD be in a position to pursue a promotion, and THAT will definitely pay more than minimum wage. It would probably pay closer to the $10.10 that they are now pushing. Which is what really pisses me off. All of those who have worked their asses off to earn more than minimum wage will have all their hard-earned gains wiped out in one fell swoop.

239 How many people make minimum wage who are I think your number (3%) may be too high ------ More relevant would be how many people that a federal minimum would apply to make less than $10.10 an hour. That covers a significant percent of the retail employees, I suspect, and (in the south) many distribution employees. A lot of these positions begin around $9 and $10/hour.

Kids These Days do not have part time jobs because Cassidy and Khole and Kennedy and Walsh are too busy being involved in school clubs and volunteer projects and pumping up that application for college so that they can get into the very very best school they can and those admissions officers?

I tread into dangerous waters taking slight issue with Your Highness....

I think it's more the reality that you have quite a few illegal aliens crowding the low/no skill job markets. They work all day for peanuts, and they'll probably stick around...unlike a teenager where you'll get a couple of summers out of them before they move on.

Honestly, I am adamant all of my kids get jobs, but the way the job market is, it's going to be very tough for them to find jobs at McDonald's or whatever.

I take your point about college admissions officers looking more favorably on bullshit extracurriculars. I guess in my case by the time I was applying for college I was already managing a night shift at McDonald's, and since I was going for a business degree that helped more than running track or something.

All businesses that employ these union members ( including the Gov ) will hemorrhage money since budgets account for the hourly rate in the current final year.

Anyway, I found one I liked, it was a good price, and I went in to talk to the finance manager. I was preapproved for a loan, but thought I'd see what they offered. The payment was good, APR was good all that good stuff but WHAT'S THIS?!? A $5,000 fee for loan processing? WTH? So I called USAA right there in front of the Finance Manager and asked them if they'd ever heard of such a thing. They had not. When I got off the phone with them, the Finance Manager had the nerve to ask me if he gave me a better APR if I'd go through them. I asked if the $5,000 fee still applied. Yes, it did. No, I didn't go through them.

I think busses are the best mass-transport solution right now because train tracks are impossible to lay anymore due to Enviro lawsuits. Well, shit, nobody is even going to pay to advertise their $500 and $999 hoopties in an expensive publication or website, are they. Nobody seems to know how to shop for a cheap used car anymore. Look on Craigslist, or simply cruise the residential streets and look for dusty cars with a "for sale" sign in the window. Then be prepared to dicker on the deal. And have enough cash in your pocket to be able to close on the spot.

Trouble is, these idiots are demanding low-miles, near-new cars, and then whining because the payments eat them alive. Look, if you are on minimum wage, a 3 year-old Toyota ain't what you need. But a 15 year old Cavalier will get your a$$ from point A to point B.

Basically what that means is if you don't need a huge plan, you pay more per unit as it were.

379 Well, I'm in the used car business, and I can tell you that before Cash for Clunkers, it was easy to sell $1000-$2000 used cars to working people who paid cash. The cars were obviously not the best, but most of them worked well enough--some of them very well (although they weren't the best looking). Yes, many of them were older and had high mileage, but what do you expect for $1500? We have a cash and carry business, but everyone asks if we have buy-here/pay here. We don't but it tells me that people are begging to go into hock to buy a slightly newer, slightly better -looking car, and yes $300 a month is very possible. When you are poor, the appearance of the car you drive becomes more important to you than it does to a wealthy person. Yes, they are willing to pay through the nose....

The problem with public transport buses is that the President didn't mention them in his State of the Union address.

So while it's sexy to talk about trains and light rail, and throw billions and billions of dollars at the false promises of high speed public transport, buses do all the heavy lifting (literally) in many places around the country, and will continue to do so as long as there are people who can't afford cars (or we all get jetpacks, whichever comes first).

I believe you are correct. We get to work, turn off our engines and go work all day. Buses, etc. run all day long. There may be other factors that contribute, like how bus engines run, etc. but I don't know enough about it to have any kind of authority on the topic.

Megan McArdle had an article years ago pointing out that same issue with light rail. You had to run the trains even if they were empty, which used about the same amount of fuel.

A guy I work with got one of those POS, a few months later there was something wrong with the gas tank (a check valve not working right?) that caused to to backfeed whenever you filled it. He pretty much had to dribble gas into the car to avoid it. When he took it to the dealership, after checking and seeing so many people complaining about the problem, they said that nobody had complained about that problem. He went home and printed off the 50+ pagesof complaints, and it still took forever for them to fix it correctly. Eventually they had a recall.

398 393 Well, I'm in the used car business, and I can tell you that before Cash for Clunkers, it was easy to sell $1000-$2000 used cars to working people who paid cash.

And then they call her and complain about the monthly bill and the interest rate. Since apparently they just want the car and don't read any of the loan documents. . .

435 More than 60 New Jersey high school seniors were arrested early Thursday after they allegedly broke into their school for a class prank overnight, urinating in the hallways, flipping desks and greasing door handles, police say. Police responded to a burglary alarm at Teaneck High School shortly before 2:30 a.m. When they arrived, several students tried to run away but officers found dozens of teens still there, some hiding, and significant damage throughout the school, according to Teaneck Police Sgt. John Garland. Garland said officers found balloons throughout the building, flipped desks, petroleum jelly on doorknobs and urine in the hallways. Police also watched some of the alleged criminal activity on the closed-circuit security system as it was happening. "I've been a police officer 19 years, and this is the craziest thing I've ever seen," Garland said. All White Jewish kids I am sure??????? And if ya know Teaneck, ya know what I am talking about

Posted by: zombie at May 01, 2014 07:48 AM (mizYg)

457 SOMEBODY miscalculated. $7.25x 160 hrs = $1160 x .02 = $23.20. If that's "most of a used car payment", then somebody is paying $40/mo for a used car, i.e., less than they're paying in gas. So where do I go to get that deal?

459 I don't get how this ad is a positive for the Dims. It seems to me they're saying, "Our policies will eat up a big chunk of what you earn, so much so that you won't be able to afford a car." How is that supposed to be a plus??? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at May 01, 2014 12:46 PM (StbAf)

This makes sense to them.

461 470 380 TSA Gropers looking out for terrorists pic.twitter.com/t46N1aEt2D Posted by: kbdabear That photo was "debunked," in that a. It's not the TSA, nor at an airport, and b. It's been slightly photoshopped. Real story: She was a "booth babe" model at a car show and she was searched by the security guards trying to get into the convention. Also, she is skinny, and her hips were photoshopped to be larger, to make her silicon books more believable looking. So, the photo is "real"-ish, but it has nothing to do with TSA or airport security. Google if you don't believe me. Posted by: zombie at May 01, 2014 12:47 PM (mizYg) Whatever. I'd hit it.

463 Still- gov't mandate = bad.

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at May 01, 2014 11:58 AM (PYAXX)

Rear-view mirrors? government mandate

Turn signals? government mandate

Safety glass? government mandate

Seat belts? government mandate

I am not opposed to having government mandate auto safety features that are BOTH cheap and effective, and rear vision cameras are certainly effective, and now becoming cheap. We tend to lose sight of the fact that many of the safety features we take for granted as standard equipment, did not become such until mandated by government.

468 200, mandates like side curtain airbags and other things have caused larger rear corner pillars. This creates larger blind spots. Rear-camera mandates are partially about that. So one mandate causes a problem, in addition to increasing costs, and the solution is a new mandate that also increases costs more! The goal of course is the "boil the frog slowly" technique to get us all to live in apartment towers in downtown big cities where we can use mass transit and won't NEED cars...because nobody can afford 'em.

469 I know they have that rep, but my 6 yr old VW Eos is cherry. Never had a problem. Posted by: Y-not at May 01, 2014 12:53 PM (zDsvJ) 10 years and still fine. Only time I had a problem was when Bambi ran into me.

470 And I'll award a one year Platinum Level subscription to AoSHQ to the first Moron who knows where the gas cap is located on that car. Posted by: BackwardsBoy, who did not vote for this shit at May 01, 2014 12:30 PM (0HooB) IIRC, there's a door in the fin over the left tail light that swings open for the gas cap The 58 Caddy had it directly under the tail light and I believe the 58 Chevy did too. You lifted the left tail light to get to the gas cap

472 "Minimum wage is projected to lose 2% of it's value in 2014" Forget the $300/ month car payment (for unsafe transportation? Really?). So, Democrats are finally admitting to 2% inflation/ decline in purchasing power? ... And this justifies an 36% increase in minimum wage? Fucking Common Core Math is something, huh?

Posted by: Damiano at May 01, 2014 08:08 AM (j0wOO)

473 If inflation is going to cost minimum wage workers $300/year Then won't raising the cost of labor also raise the cost of goods and services, leaving them short a larger sized car payment?

300 a month on a USED car?? God,I can't believe these people get to vote...

I didn't spend that much on my car new and I wasn't making minimum wage at the time either.

477 Aren't these the same fucking assholes who upped the cost of used cars with their idiotic Cash for Clunkers debacle?

Posted by: whatever at May 01, 2014 09:31 AM (Wf0EB)

478 You are wrong on your calculation. 7.25/hr * 52 * 40 = 15k. 2% of 15k is 300 *a YEAR*. So it's not $300/month, but $25/month.

HOWEVER, the graphic is still misleading. How is $25/month "most" of a used car payment? If we're talking a 5 year loan, that's $1500. You got someone to finance that?

Posted by: Steven S. at May 01, 2014 09:49 AM (ZAxe5)

479 Hmm, I went to Kelly Blue Book and looked at what $5,000 could buy and what the payments would be. There were a total of 6 sedans in my area(which is laden with car dealers). The prize out of those 6 choices was a 2000 Ford ZX2 Escort with 35,000 miles. A five year payment plan at 1.99%(loan quote from Kelly) had a payment of $94.63, with a total cost for the vehicle of $5,636.
