Conservatives' Brains Big On Fear, Low On Courage, Study Says
— Ace

I didn't even see this one when I posted the other one. So here's more science.

A study at University College London in the UK has found that conservatives' brains have larger amygdalas than the brains of liberals. Amygdalas are responsible for fear and other "primitive" emotions. At the same time, conservatives' brains were also found to have a smaller anterior cingulate -- the part of the brain responsible for courage and optimism.

If the study is confirmed, it could give us the first medical explanation for why conservatives tend to be more receptive to threats of terrorism, for example, than liberals. And it may help to explain why conservatives like to plan based on the worst-case scenario, while liberals tend towards rosier outlooks.

Note how that last bit is put -- conservatives plan responsibly for the future, whereas liberals live for the moment and wind up living on others -- the ant and the grasshopper-- but rather than put it that way, they say that conservatives fear "worst-case scenarios" and liberals, eternal optimists, "tend towards rosier outlooks."

Oh, that stuff about "courage"? Um, yeah. Ask the troops.

Oh but I'm sure they are defining "courage" differently -- by "courage," they mean, in all likelihood, a willingness to sample other cultures. Not physical courage, of course.

Because, seriously? Yeah.

I Called It: This isn't 100% proof, but when I said they were probably using the word "courage" in the non-definitional manner of meaning "openness to new ideas"?

Yeah, based on this, I'm thinking that's the meaning of "courage" to a liberal.

The results, which will be published next year, back up a study that showed that some people were born with a "Liberal Gene" that makes people more likely to seek out less conventional political views.

The gene, a neurotransmitter in the brain called DRD4, could even be stimulated by the novelty value of radical opinions, claimed the researchers at the University of California.

If you're keeping track, socialism is now a 160 year old novelty of an idea.

9 I find it quiet hilarious that a group that vilifies religious so (liberals) they have this almost religious devotion to science. Now I'm not saying science is a bad thing, but it is run by humans, and, like religion, has all of our human flaws spun into it. So, perhaps all the 'self-serving' religious figures that they so despise don't have too little in common with the unabashedly biased researchers who publish studies like this.

45 So a little time on Wiki and what do I learn? Amygdalas aren't in charge of fear in general. They are in charge of learned emotions esp. learned fear: Fear that you have because the last time you identified the particular sensory pattern you're currently experiencing bad things happened.

Which attributes to "worst case planning" If you plan for the worst and the best happens, no harm done. If you plan for the best and the worst happens, well you are likely to be afraid (cautious) of the possibility of worst case scenarios in the future.

In hick land we have a special name for learned caution/fear that pushes you toward less risky action; Common sense.

So the spin here is substantial. Being able to get burned several times by a stove before your noggin manages to broadcast some caution around hot things is not an attribute one would normally be proud of.

anterior cingulate
I see nothing in the Wiki write up to suggest that it has anything to do with "courage" which I define as the ability to act despite fear of consequences. At best it may be described as a major regulator of "self confidence". Liberals full of "I think me can do anything"? That might be news somewhere.

But after all, if the headline says.

Conservatives more likely to be cautious when experience dictates situational risks.

Liberals more likely to believe they can accomplish anything regardless of situation or actual qualification.

Just doesn't sell the narrative.

231 Heinlein wrote a semi-autobiographical story about fear and courage. It involved a pulmonary TB treatment in use at the time that called for inflating the peritoneum. A new doctor was asked to perform this procedure on a group of military patients in a communal room.

The first two patients died right there in the room because it was done incorrectly. So a third patient hopped up on the table and said "I'm next." The reluctant doctor proceeded after much prodding, and the third patient died too.

Autopsies showed that, indeed, the first two patients died from embolisms but for the third patient they could find nothing wrong. Heinlein contended that the third patient died of fright.

Fear, and courage.

274 Some other study just showed a larger amygdala is correlated with a larger social network. So  big city liberals from small families with few close, tight familial ties would have smaller amygdalas than conservatives from large families or small towns where people know each other much better.

In general the larger a city you live in the larger, but shallower is your circle of friends and acquaintances.

Personally I bet this is a neural resource issue. You can know and care about  some people a lot, or know and care about a lot of people only somewhat. This is politicians are often described as semi-sociopaths by close acquaintances. You try keeping track of  thousands of key political players whose support you need and see how much time and mental energy you have left to bond with friends and family and learn details of their life.

The human brain has some serious limitations. And we all  have to make choices on how to spend our limited resources.

293 So what you're saying is that they're defining "courage" as "stupid enough to touch the hot iron a second (and third, and fourth) time?"

Consider me a coward.

Well the issue is two pronged. What they refer to as "fear" that conservatives have is really "learned fear" that exists due to experience of a similar situation.

What they refer to as "Courage" has nothing to do with the fortitude to continue a course of action despite knowledge of likely negative consequence, and is really the just belief that one can succeed, or self confidence.

Lets go with an example.
Take it in a gun fight. Say I have quick draw champion and who finds himself in a real gun battle with a duffer. Now if that champion knows that he can put 3 shots into the head of Mr. Duffer before Duffer can clear leather, is Champion brave or courageous in doing so? Hardly. Self confidence is different than bravery or courage.

Now lets say that Duffer is ultra-pelosi grade liberal. He is just teaming with self confidence and believes he can win. Is he being brave by taking on Champion? No. No courage is required if one believes they can succeed. And the rational person would say the failure to identify when one is unlikely to win, especially when dire consequences are involved, is stupidity not bravery.

On the other hand if Duffer is conservative. He is more likely to believe that he will lose and will get shot and is likely to be very afraid of it. If he is still standing there, what can we conclude? First his reason for being there must be very serious, second, he is one brave SOB.

So here we can see where the weapons grade stupid "I'm on track to keep my speakership" comes from. Along with the sincere belief that Obama care would help them in the polls not hurt. It's not bravery. It's a lack of the better sense to be scared.

The reality of negative consequence that the real world lives in, just does not exist for them. Either in the before hand when the rational can deduce low probability of success, nor in the afterhand, when experience should remind them of negative consequences. It is no wonder they try to remove consequence from real life with their myriad of "programs" meant to "help". In their world consequence for action just does not exist, leaving the only factor in determination of life being random events or "luck" and we don't want people to do with less because of bad "luck" do we?

313
Unlike conservatism, which by definition seeks to conserve, to preserve the very structure our Founding Fathers provided in which individual liberty could flourish, liberalism seeks to take everybody under a controlling, supposedly benevolent government, and provide not individual liberty, but a society in which all needs are met somehow – at the cost of personal independence.

I have dear friends, even close family, who are liberals. They're good and caring people, and they really desire to see America erase poverty, inequality, prejudice and ignorance. They earnestly believe Big Government can do all that, if we'll just institute enough benevolent regulations and programs and bureaucracies. We can create heaven on earth. And they want us to do it.

Thus motivated, they always support political candidates and ballot measures that promise to do all those things. And when confronted with all the evidence that Big Government is ineffective, bloated, eventually unfair and disorganized, they look for candidates who promise they can do it better.

With utmost respect for liberal people I love dearly, I believe they've been infected with a virus. They honestly don't know it, and will deny it to my face, but I can see they don't trust the Constitution and the sparse but sinewy structure it created, the liberty for individuals and localities to address their own problems – without looking to the federal government for all solutions. They've become utterly convinced a centralized, hugely tax-funded government can, and should, solve all our human problems.

The liberal virus, I believe, gains entrance through the I's. Not the eyes, but the I's. The afflicted liberal proclaims "I think ...," "I want ...," "I'd rather ...," instead of asking "What does the Constitution say?" or "What does the Bible say?" as did our Founding Fathers.

In Hollywood, we've seen and heard this virus spread almost unchecked. Nobody wants to be told they can't, or shouldn't, do anything. Morality? Tradition? Decency? Religion? Â… Outmoded concepts, not relevant. "Why can't we give the public what it wants? Who makes the rules? I'll do what I want, say whatever I please. Leave me alone. I just made 30 million, didn't I?"

An atheist in San Francisco declares "I don't like the words 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance. I don't care what you 300 million other Americans want. I don't like it ... take 'em out!" And the 9th Circuit Court agrees!

And now a fledgling president says, to an angry citizenry, 85 percent of which doesn't want a universal health-care plan, "Don't bet against me. I promise you I'll get this plan passed by year's end." What you want? As the Constitution provides? No! What I want, what I think you need, and what you should pay $1.1 trillion for!

This virus is powerful. It so changes the rational thought of its victims that they'll ride roughshod over the citizenry's wishes. But we're seeing the even more powerful antidote – the lymphocytes, the white corpuscles we call ordinary Americans, who are confronting the blistered spokesmen for the unwanted, socialistic takeover under way. At polling places and gatherings all over this country, they're rushing in to create an environment in which the virus cannot prevail.

Fellow morons, "Be not overcome with evil – but overcome evil with good."

Courage.

329 one of the constant criticism the left throw against the right is that they're driven by fear and they cite terrorism as an example. Thats ridiculous. Everyone have fears, left or right. Conservatives fear islamists because they're are violent leftists. Leftist view them as allies. If Christians were going around killing leftists, leftists will show the exact fears that the right show

331 Courage is helping incite a riot in Harlem outside Freddies Fashion Mart that killed 8 people. (Including a black security guard who was called a  "cracker lover" and a race traitor)

It took even more courage to call the Jewish owner of that store (Fred Harari) a "white interloper".

332 I think "real courage" is hard to define, but you'd be pretty damned hard-pressed to come up with a version that supports wasting taxpayers funds every few years publishing so-called studies that twist words so they can vilify people you dislike because of their politics.

That's just dickish, cowardly assholery right there, and every one of those motherfuckers should be fired and banned from public employment.

334 Oh, well, at least it's the Brits on this one, for variety's sake. I'm sure the U Cal system was tired of carrying the "Conservatism Is A Mental Illness" interdisciplinary project all by their lonesome.

Incoherence. If we suddenly have the "first scientific explanation" for why conservatives are more "receptive" to (i.e., afraid of) the threat of terrorism, please explain in what part of the brian resides the will to fight them? How many little lefties from Berkeley enlisted after 9/11? Oh, but I guess they were amygdala-advantaged enough not to be "receptive" to threats of terrorism, including not being receptive to Islamic proclivities to mutilate genitals of young women, behead journalists, blow up busloads of innocent people, hang homosexuals, use donkeys and dogs as mobile bombs and impose or try to impose vicious theocracy everywhere they cart their miserable carcasses. Must be nice having an amygdala that lets you not be "receptive" to anything that might call for some kind of moral or physical response.

The fuc*ing Left -- they never stop coming at you, and from every angle. Why would they? They own every angle. Science, art, media, academic, political. Owned and despoiled and exploited to advance their agenda. It never stops. As Horowitz says, it never stops because at least some slice of every new generation of young people is susceptible to their lies and conceits.

336 About that courage and troops thing: It's not that we're more brave -- in fact, we do ridiculous things to avoid getting hurt. But when it comes down to it, we have a job to do. And that job has to get done, no matter who or what is shooting at you. Because if you don't do your job, your buddy is a dead man. It has very little to do with brave, and everything to do with the fact that your brother is downrange, and you've got to do everything you can to bring him back alive. Just my two cents, anyway.

337 sounds rather fascist to me. didn't they claim that the juices were inferior based upon "science"? sounds like the liberal fascists are heading down a similar path, and demonizing conservatives.

someone should look for the totalitarian gene. i think it would be easy guess which side of the political spectrum possesses that particular one.

341 The size of the amygdala is strongly linked to social connectiveness as well. People with a larger amygdala tend to have better relationships and larger social networks. Hmmmmm . . . Interesting how THAT got left out of this report.

I'm not sure how they managed to find enough conservatives to do a study on since  there aren't more than a handful of conservatives in Britain, even in the Conservative Party and no sane conservative would permit the University College in London anywhere near their brain.

@ 350

Ted,

"These UK guys sound like Nazi scientists describing the physiological inferiority of Jews in the 1930s."

Make no mistake about it! The Hardcore Leftist Elites that are behind the scenes, pulling the strings have that exact agenda in mind. Any method that can use "Science" to control behavior and lead to Eugenics, so that they can have their 1000 Year Reich, they have pursued, and they aren't gonna stop until they get what they want. If you have spare time research the Psycology field in America's Universities, and learn about the black-balling that is going on...all based on fullfilling political agendas. Same thing is happending in the Climate Sciences as well.

"Agree with them....Or your Out!"......it's that simple!
