Colorado Democrat Ed Perlmutter: Damn, the Aurora Theater Massacre Makes Me Stoked About ObamaCare
— Ace

Without ObamaCare, the survivors wouldn't have received any treatment, it turns out.

PERLMUTTER: Affordable Care Act is in place. The Supreme Court approved its terms a couple, three weeks ago. And it will do some things that, in my opinion needed to be done. It will stop the discrimination against people with prior illnesses or injuries, or say some of the folks who were shot in the theater, they would be uninsurable now that they’ve had that wound, but under the affordable care act they can’t be discriminated against starting in 2014.

Apparently you can't ever get insurance if you've literally ever been sick or ever had a wound.

The headline joke ("Damn...") is a go-to joke from Hot Air. I figure it's Allah's, but I don't know.

This is the second time that Rep. Perlmutter has used the events in Colorado to push a political agenda. On July 22nd, just days after the shooting, Perlmutter appeared on CBS’s Face the Nation. After Bob Schieffer brought up the issue of gun control to him, Perlmutter initially played lip service to the idea that now wasn’t the time right before he launched into a tirade about the need to reinstitute the assault weapons ban:

Posted by: Uncledave at July 31, 2012 06:37 AM (nJ32z)

24 At a certain level this sort of reminds me of when the ACLU flipped its lid over arrestees being Tasered by cops as opposed to being shot to death. The ACLU was worried that without fatal gunshots it would be more difficult to prove police brutality. Seriously. Now we have an airheaded liberal Democrat (I know, redundant) who's got tingles running up and down his legs because gunshot victims two years from now won't be able to have certain treatments excluded for preexisting conditions, despite the obvious facts that emergency treatment still in any event would be available and that various coverages that exclude preexisting conditions do so only for chronic conditions and illnesses, not for acute traumas. Leftism is a mental disorder.

25 When you're a democrat, you say stupid things.
When you say stupid things, you get on TV.
When you get on TV, you become rich and famous.
When you become rich and famous, you spend your money on hookers & blow.
When you spend your money on hookers and blow, you get health problems.
When you get health problems, you seek medical care.
When you seek medical care, you are denied because your stupidity is a pre-existing condition.
When your medical care is denied for a pre-existing condition, you die.
Don't die. Support ObamaCare.

Okay okay, hang on.   Let me run this past y'all.   Tell me if I have my    regressive thought process right.

1)    According to our Preezy and his fellow regressives,      babies are equivalent to a case of genital herpes in that they are an unwanted nuisance that    can be    "caught" via casual sex.

2)   Therefore, babies are a    similar to a      pre-existing condition that would preclude one from obtaining insurance.

3)  Everybody was, at one point in their history, an unborn baby.

4)      Therefore, nobody is eligible for     health insurance because everybody was, once upon a time, a pre-existing condition.

Does that sound about right?

79 Speaking of gunshot wounds, we had a homeowner shoot and critically wound a burglar here yesterday. What is interesting about it is that a few months ago we had a whole batch of this type of thing which was covered extensively in the media, with them touting the number of people buying guns for self defense etc. Now, there's barely a peep about this event. My suspicion is that after the Aurora massacre provided an opportunity for libs to once again push gun control, any news about guns being used in a positive way has been embargoed for certain media organizations.

121 "Apparently you can't ever get [health] insurance if you've literally ever been sick or ever had a wound." Not to defend Perlmutter, PPACA, or guaranteed-issue, but yes Ace, it is difficult to get individual health insurance if you have pre-existing conditions. The big insurers won't talk to you if you've had even pissy-little health problems in the past; they won't let you in the door to even try to negotiate, say, a higher premium. The agents will literally *laugh* at you when you apply. I hate Obamacare as much as you do, Ace, and I don't know nor advocate any particular solution to this problem, but please don't deny the plain fact that individual health insurance is hard to get with pre-existing conditions. Try it yourself sometime and find out.

129 "You totally missed the whole point." Ace's point was that Perlmutter is an opportunistic jerk, right? We all agree on that. Perhaps Ace meant to write "Apparently you can't ever get health care if ..." instead of "Apparently you can't ever get insurance if ..." That would have been accurate sarcasm, considering how Dems always dishonestly conflate "health care" with "insurance." But what Ace actually wrote fails as sarcasm, because it really is difficult to get individual health insurance with pre-existing conditions (which I assume would include GSWs with complications.) Try it some time.

130 but under the affordable care act they can’t be discriminated against starting in 2014.

I'm so sick of this.  This needs to be dealt with by republicans/conservatives.

If you have a pre-existing condition that costs more than your yearly premiums, you are not purchasing "insurance" against some future possible risk.  You are asking a company to allow you to pay them say $10,000 a year and in return they will pay out $100,000 a year in coverage.

How is it discrimination for a company to say "no, I don't think I like that deal"?  Why would any company agree to a deal where you pay them $10,000 and they pay you (or pay someone else on your behalf) $100,000?

That's asinine.  The idea of insurance is that there is a risk that is covered by the insurance.  In the case of a pre-existing condition and health-care - there is no "risk", the condition and cost is known.  Therefore you are not purchasing "insurance", but seeking to make someone else pay for your care.

Now, health insurance is a weird form of insurance, in that every policy knows its going to pay out for routine care - regular check-ups, dr's visits and the like.  But the thing that health insurance is truly covering is the risk of someone getting a condition that will require significant amounts of money for care.  Put another way, my plan costs about $10k a year.  My prescriptions and dr's visits do not cost the carrier anywhere near that amount.  but if I got cancer next year, the treatments would likely be significantly higher.  So, I could save say $7k a year by not buying insurance and instead paying for prescriptions and dr's visits out of pocket.  But, if I got the cancer, I would be screwed.  There's the risk I am insuring.  And the Insurance company is spreading it around and betting only 1 in 20 individuals in the plan get a significant illness and thus they will pay out less overall then they take in.

Which is why it should be unconstitutional to require companies to cover pre-existing conditions - as it is involuntary servitude.  There is no business bargain there - you are simply demanding that they pay for someone else's health care.

It does suck that pre-existing conditions, particularly those you are born with, would not get covered - but it is perfectly reasonable and rational decision on the part of insurance carriers.

131 If you have a "pre-existing condition" you can always do what a former co-worker did. He was an independent contractor. His wife got M.S.  He hired on as a permanent worker so he could get group insurance with the company.

Posted by: Vic at July 31, 2012 08:23 AM (YdQQY)

132 Monkeytoe is exactly right describing why guaranteed-issue can't work. What cheeses me off about health insurance is that insurers won't even negotiate with applicants over coverage. In my case, I have chronic Condition X, which is easily and cheaply managed, and I don't need nor want ANY coverage for Condition X; I'm happy to pay that out-of-pocket. However, I DO want catastrophic coverage for OTHER possibilities like heart attack, cancer, etc., but because I have Condition X, the door is COMPLETELY closed to me. The insurers will not even entertain the perfectly reasonable negotiation of premiums and coverage limits; it's easier for them to just give a blanket NO to people like me. I don't know of, nor advocate, any particular solution to this problem. But the problem does exist. I can't be the only self-employed moron here who knows the problem exists.

134 "If you have a "pre-existing condition" you can always do what a former co-worker did. He was an independent contractor ... He hired on as a permanent worker" All I have to do is switch from contractor to full-time salaried employee to get health insurance? Wow, that's so easy! I can *always* do that! Because there are so many full-time salaried and insured job positions out there for the taking! Ha ha ha ha ha! This is 2012, not 1962. Those kinds of jobs are scarce now. I HAD that kind of job until 1993. I just turned 58 yrs old. I'll never find a job like that again.

135 #130

It's not a bug, it's a feature. This system is intended to fail. The goal is to rendered things so broken as to make a full government takeover acceptable to a majority of voters.

The backers of Obamacare haven't been remotely coy about this. They've all said the ultimate goal is something in between the Canadian and UK systems.

The insurers have gotten behind this on the basis that they will cash in big time before the collapse. You can be that all of the execs are carefully calculating when to schedule their retirements or line up new jobs in another business.

Why can't our congresscritters get up to speed on HIPPA?

HIPPA, an existing federal law (since the 1990s no less) already prohibits insurers from imposing pre-existing conditions on employees (it only applies to employer provided health insurance), so long as the employee can show creditable coverage. This was a trade off to prevent folks from only signing up for insurance once they got sick.

Why in heavens name would any insurer cover a pre-existing condition if given a choice. It's insurance, not healthcare. You and your doctor provides for your healthcare.

You buy insurance before you wreck your car, not after.
