The Dems say they made an offer of $20B, which the Rs deny. A story is also circulating that a budget deal was almost made last week to the tune of $35B in cuts but it didn't go over well with many conservatives in the House.* Regardless of what happened, the fact remains that neither side is getting what they want, so there very well could be a shutdown on the 8th due to internal fighting in both camps and neither party wanting to cede ground to the other. Then again, this could all just be noise.

Dean is right. Not because a shutdown is actually a bad thing to do, which it isn't.

Dean knows it will benefit the Democrats politically because they know how to exploit a shutdown and spin it into something terrible. Dean also knows who the opposition is. Dean knows the Republicans won't/can't properly explain what a shutdown really means to the American People.

Since the conflict began, a squadron of 18 RAF Typhoon pilots has enforced the Libya no-fly zone from an air base in southern Italy. However, a shortage of qualified fighter pilots means the RAF may not have enough to replace all of them when the squadron has to rotate in a few weeks.

The situation is so serious that the RAF has halted the teaching of trainee Typhoon pilots so instructors can be drafted on to the front line, according to air force sources. The handful of pilots used for air shows will also be withdrawn from displays this summer.

The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. Some Dem leaders in the House and in the Senate have already said that it's the Tea Parties fault, and they're pointing to this Tea Party rally in DC next week that is aimed at getting the full bill + riders.

99 Look, if we want to try to rein in the media--and fat chance with the current state of things, but if you really feel like trying--I can think of two options.

1.)  Get serious with enforcing laws about political donations.  Call what they've been doing donation of services, or in-kind or whatever it's called.  Watch the feathers fly.

2.)  Break up the big media groups.  Classifying them as an illegal cartel might work--and given how they 'negotiate' with cable and satellite providers, price fixing allegations have a pretty fair chance of sticking.  Go back to the old rules concerning limits on ownership in local markets.  (I know, normally regulating a market should be the last thing we want, but there is a place where things get this badly out of whack--and with consequences this dire.)

Beyond that, I got nothing.  And frankly, good luck trying either of these two.

100 Breaking, semi-OT: Media Matters has just sprung its "guerrilla war," on NPR's All Things Considered. As it turns out, during the Joe The Plumber affair, now-DC Fox Bureau Chief Bill Sammon said that Obama's "share the wealth" line sounded a lot like socialism, and that would be "red meat" to most conservatives.

That's it, but reported in NPR's trademark hushed concerned tone, like they'd just dropped a flaming deuce in the formal-ball punchbowl. This, they seem to feel, changes everything. Hey hey, ho ho.

101 Schumer is going to have to live with riots incited by his rhetoric if he's not careful. Someone should follow him with a microphone every day.

The template, as evidenced in Greece, Wisconsin, and London is that the entitlement loafers intend to make this a long, expensive, messy two or three years. Schumer should be held accountable for his role in it, just as should Michael "Fried Jelly Doughnut" Moore.

In 1964 LBJ and the Dems wanted to pass the Civil Rights legislation.  Goldwater was almost alone among Republicans (there were southern Dems who were with him) saying "you can't do this, not because we don't want equality for all our citizens, but because we're the federal government, and we don't have the Constitutional right to do so!"

The Dems said "it's what JFK wanted," and Goldwater was being extreme.  It didn't matter that it was wrong, as long as you could sell it to the morons who don't know any better.

It's not all because the media works so hard to mute them; they do a lot of it to themselves. Maybe they have to use some ridicule sometimes, and stop using the language prescribed by the Democrats. Stop referring to tax cuts and start hammering home the fact that it's our money in the first place, for one thing.

Not for nothing, a few years ago, I went on a run through lower Manhattan near the courts.  I happened past Schumer, who was in front of a podium bloviating to a crowd of gathered reporters about a court case, which wouldn't have been so strange except, if memory serves, it was a Sunday. Meaning, there probably had been no decision yet and they were getting his well-informed opinion "in the can" on something that probably hadn't even happened yet.  I yelled out "Asshole!" but not loud enough to make a stir.

My mouth breathing union in-law was at my house earlier and he said that he wouldn't be surprised if death threats went out to Gov. Walker and Gov. Kasich.

After I gained my composure I asked why.  He said that especially in Walker's case he ignored the rule of law.  He didn't debate the issue, he just changed the rules.

I asked him if he knew the law was discussed before the Left left, and he said yes, but that doesn't give him any right to do what he did.  I asked if he knew the Left left.  He said yes, but Walker should have waited until they came back to debate the bill.

So, I went for a different approach.  I asked him if he knew there were death threats against the lawmakers.  He said it doesn't surprise him.  I asked if he is now agreeing with me that his fucking side is a bunch of thugs.  He said he thinks they need to be.

If Republicans don't behave as if we're in a crisis, no one will take notice.

For instance, the $14T debt, and the death threats in WI. If the Republicans don't make hay out of these serious issues the people will remain ignorant (other than the info fed to them by the Left).

182 Hate to say it, but this stupid drama is playing out the same as it did before.

After 1994, there was a big debate over whether to renew Mexico's Most Favored Nation Trade status. Given their refusal at the time to make any efforts at enforcing drug laws (which has only gotten worse), the easy answer was no. Beat them up, get some reforms, give it back later.
But, Billy and the Dems said we had to for the poor, starving children.
And the GOP folded.
I've never forgotten that. Right then and there, I knew the GOP was going to get rolled again and again. They caved on an issue that 90% of Americans didn't care about, didn't know about, and would never have heard about again. And yet, they caved. For nothing.

Now: They are rolling over on the easy shit again, but they're gonna tell you this new line in the sand is the last line. For sure this time.

But don't start calling me names because you can't win an argument.  All they would have to say is, 'Shit.  Well, I didn't know that.  Let me look into what you said.' That way, there isn't a 'winner'.

But no.  They pull out the insults, name calling, etc.

They'd have better luck whipping out their dick & flinging it on the table. At least then I could say, 'Well, with a short stick like that, your ignorance is to be expected.'

Then we could all laugh.

When I worked in the cage at a Las Vegas casino, I had to sign for over $10 million in cash and chips at the beginning of every shift.  I was totally responsible for it.  When I tell people here in OK about that experience, they marvel at what it would be like to be surrounded by $10 million in cash.  What happened was something I never expected would happen.  Money became just a product, like produce is to a grocer.  No more no less.

I think the same thing happens to congress people when they are constantly dealing with hundreds of billions of dollars on a daily basis.  It becomes just another addendum to the job.  They shift it around like so much paperwork on their desks, not really realizing the enormity of the amounts.

I'm saying this not as an excuse for their irresponsible fiscal behaviour.  At the end of every shift I had to account for every bit of that $10 million to within $3.  With congress, we, the people, haven't been demanding close responsibility for all that cash for almost five decades if not longer.  No wonder much of it is being stolen.

210 So Shmuck Schumer was caught on a call plotting strategy against the GOP, huh? Anyone else remember the two-week long "scandal" back in 1995 when an old couple (Dem party activists it turns out) justs happened to come along a private cell phone conversation between Speaker Newt & then-Leader Boehner when driving along in said couple's mobile home? The conversation was taped & passed along (illegally) to a Dem Congressman, who then released contents to the media. Of course the big "scandal" was not Grammy & Grampy listening in on a private conversation, taping it, then passing it along to a Dem Congressman in hopes of causing the GOP leadership mischief, but the "outrage" of the GOP plotting strategy (nothing illegal in their plans) during the '95 gov't shutdown. Not holding my breath that the lamestream media will find & report similar outrage over Dem leadership plotting what phrases to use against the GOP in order to gain advantage. I should live so long.

184 If the Repubs don't take a stand on the budget this year, you better be planting a BIIG garden.  (Stocking up on canning equipment, ammo and reloading supplies might not be a bad idea either).

I foresee several problems RE the budget:

(1) It's a consensus document, which means it has to please appropriators. However, appropriators must stay bought to keep selling the party line.

(2) After 4mos., the leadership finally agreed to address entitlements. Ever since, the moderate and liberal Rs have been sending messages through their lackeys that indicate they're "concerned". They will run at the first sign of trouble.

(3) With the exception of Hensarling, the top 5 in the leadership don't have much of a backbone and are in politics for themselves.

(4) Then you have individuals like Rep. Jordan, who have a small clique of lawmakers who they find pure enough. They will spend more time attacking their own side than in supporting even modest efforts to reform programs within mandatory spending.

Ultimately, they will spend more time engaging in a circular firing squad than they will in actually trying to accomplish something.

That's something I get really mad about. It doesn't take serious intelligence to learn how to operate the AV equipment. That's why all of us A/V nerds got to spend "valuable class time" *outside* of class fooling around with school equipment, while the "smart" kids had to endure sitting quietly. If Glenn Reynolds can learn (after many tries, I might add) to produce a decent podcast, why can't more folks on the right learn to operate a simple video camera and/or audio device? Clearly being smart is not a *total* hindrance to decent production values.

The website called "the right scoop" puts up lots of video (much of it crappy, but worth enduring). Imagine how much broader an audience could be reached if you could embed decent audio/video of folks like Paul Ryan discussing the deficit.

Instead we are lucky as hell to get shaky-cam, garble-fest audio, all by way of cellphones. Meanwhile the leftists seem to know how to use cameras, and produce propaganda in huge volumes.

That's my rant, and I'm sticking to it. Carry on.

244 Heh . .

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Consumer 10 on Tuesday helped a man finally get an apology from a major radio company, after receiving a shocking and offensive letter from a customer service representative.

Aaron Kulwicki admits that he lost his patience during a recent phone call to Sirius XM Satellite Radio to discuss a billing dispute, Consumer 10's Kurt Ludlow reported.

"We got into somewhat of a heated conversation and certainly raised the voices," Kulwicki said.

He got so angry, he canceled his Sirius service.

About two weeks later, he received a letter that was addressed to Aaron, but his last name had been changed to a series of offensive and derogatory words.

His name was changed in a way that was so offensive, 10TV News is not reporting it.

Sumi stopped short of saying the law was not already in effect. She says she will take more testimony on that issue.

The Legislative Reference Bureau posted the law on a legislative website Friday, leading Gov. Scott WalkerÂ’s administration to declare the law was in effect."

314 Sometimes you get a soundbite from a lawmaker.  In every case, it's cut in such a way as to make the Democrat sound angelic and the Republican sound like Satan.

So if you're a conservative lawmaker, how do you get around this?

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at March 29, 2011 05:57 PM (UO6+e)

Hire some fucking ex-military guys to develop a war fighting strategy for them. Because this is a fucking war and for the Democrats it always has been. Problem is the stupid ass republicans can't seem to understand this and are regularly surprised when they get their asses handed to them. They don't seem to understand that the only reason that the Democrats don't actually cut their throats is because it isn't yet legal to do this. These ex-military guys can then develop communications strategies to use in a hostile environment. The number one, first priority is to speak with one voice. Develop a message and repeat it. Every time any Republican gets a microphone shoved in his face he/she repeats the message because repetition is everything. The media will try to diffuse it or mute it or omit it but if everyone is disciplined the message will get through. And label democrats as extremists every chance you get. It works for them, it'll work for us - especially because when we say it - it's true. Like Maximus said in Gladiator "If we work together, if we stay together, We Survive. We Stay Alive".

Just some thoughts....

Excellent ideas and I wish they would use them. Too bad they regard this as a university debate over policy. Also a shame that internal disagreement keeps hampering efforts to reduce spending. If the conservative Republicans in the House could actually agree on how to best achieve their goals, they might actually get somewhere.

CSPAN re-playing a presser about Schumer's remarks. The entire leadership team is there. Cantor says that Reid has left himself in a place where he can either cut spending or raise taxes, and Reid won't commit to either. McCarthy says Reid and Schumer are placing politics before people and that the Senate Dems can't choose their leader.

Hensarling made the point about the deficit and debt being extreme.

What constitutes doing, by your definition? If we're going to measure by how much they've accomplished between both houses of Congress in getting bills passes, they are sadly lacking. We have members twisting themselves into pretzels about how they voted on certain bills; not to mention numerous symbolic votes, i.e. fiscal hawk John Campbell's refusal to vote against H.R. 839. His excuse will likely be that the bill was not good enough or some such nonsense.

Getting massive subsidies while earning record profits? NO? Then Gee, the government, and the mainstream media that spews the current "line" to keep YOU "in line" does not serve you. So maybe we all ought take the red pill, wake up, and realize it is time to establish a government "of the people, by the people and FOR the people". And btw, contrary to current law, Corporations are NOT PEOPLE.
