Chuck Hagel, Bumbling Lightweight (Who Might Also Hate Jews)
— Ace

Later on today, there will be video from Hagel's hearings. Right now as I type this Lindsey Graham is brutalizing him ( on CSPAN, the main one).

As this will be recapped in an hour or three, I won't bother now.

Brit Hume made a simple but deadly observation about Hagel's performance -- "he's just not very bright."

And he's not. While the media is intensely interested in the intellectual capacity of any Republican (unless that Republican is obviously intelligent, in which case they don't mention IQ at all), they never discuss the intelligence of the dimmer-bulb Democrats or Republicans like Hagel, who can be counted as allies.

Hagel's dumb. He's just not smart enough to be Secretary of Defense. Our troops deserve a bright man who understands complex systems and has the intellectual curiosity to discover what he doesn't know. Not a bumbling dummy whose deepest thoughts are about the "Jewish lobby."

Brief Clip: Alas this is just a short one. But this basic sort of thing went on for ten minutes. It's a cumulative thing. Seeing someone stumble and bumble for 90 seconds is no big deal; but ten minutes of stumbling and bumbling looks dumb.

Longer Clip:

NBC pulled their live feed from the webpage during Grahm's questioning.  It was still visable on the front page as happening, but you got "This event has ended" when you clicked it (when clearly it hasn't.)

Crazy edits, not covering the Menendez scandle (although writing an article that he paid the doctor back?!) and now this?  It's like a trifecta week for them.

10 For anyone who missed it, Graham pulled one of the greatest setups ever. As one commenter mentioned below, a rope-a-dope.

15 Do you really think that Obama gives a shit whether Hagel can understand complex systems?

It's the optics of a Republican nominee, and Hagel's expected blind obedience to Obama's anti-Western behavior.

And if Hagel isn't confirmed, Obama will use it as an example of Republican intransigence.

18 He's really a lot more like Obama than I thought. It's almost uncanny.

I am just curious. Will Someone ask Hagel if he will continue to pursue the effective Obama policies that have kept Al Qaeda on the "run", secured North Africa, effectively wound down the war in Afghanistan, established democracy in the Middle East and cemented bonds with our closest allies?

57 Hagel being dumb is a feature, not a bug. Obama and the Democrats need to corrupt the armed forces. They're too competent and making the rest of them look bad. The need more inefficient green power, more "conferences" with lavish entertainment budgets, more hookers, more graft, nepotism, and cronies, more weapon systems that are so dumb they make your high school science fair look brilliant. It's all about lowering expectations so people can't remember when America used to be the best. How else can losers like that keep getting re-elected?

Does this mean he’s been critical of the “Jewish Lobby” in private? Very reassuring. Then, he tried to replace his use of “intimidation” in the original statement (“The Jewish Lobby intimidates a lot of people up here”) with “influence.” Good to know.

356 Chuck Hagel stumbled Thursday during questioning on Iran, inadvertently saying the Obama administration supports “containment” and calling the country an “elected legitimate government.” "I support the president's strong position on containment, as I have said," the former Republican senator from Nebraska told the Senate Armed Services Committee considering his nomination for Defense secretary. he Obama administration supports preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, rather than containing it. “As you know, our policy is prevention, not containment,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Fox News on Tuesday. “We have, through the hard work we’ve undertaken with the international community, imposed the toughest set of sanctions — international and bilateral — on any country.” Later, Hagel, who was being questioned by Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), was passed a note informing him of his mistake, and he offered a correction. "I misspoke and said I supported the president's position on containment. If I said that, I meant to say we don't have a position on containment," Hagel said. (Also on POLITICO: Hagel under fire at confirmation hearing) But even that was not clear enough. Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) stepped in to clarify further. "We do have a position on containment, and that is we do not favor containment," Levin said. "I just wanted to clarify the clarify." hagel really is a blithering idiot

This is a win-win-win for Obama.

If Hagel is confirmed, and the military is dismantled, Obama gets what he wants and can blame a mean-spirited Republican.

If Hagel does poorly in his hearings and doesn't get confirmed somehow (the "somehow" refers to not getting confirmed, he's obviously doing badly in the hearings), Obama can blame a dumb Republican (Hagel) and a mean-spirited Republican (take your pick, McCain or Graham).

In fact, given the liberal tendency to salivate every time they get the opportunity to label a Republican either dumb or mean-spirited, these Hagel hearings are almost ideal.

374 Via JPost: The Saudi-based newspaper Al-Watan on Thursday reported that the Syrian regime has transferred non-conventional weapons to Hezbollah. Al-Watan, quoting unnamed sources from the Syrian opposition, reported that Syrian President Bashar Assad has been transferring weapons to Hezbollah since the beginning of 2012, including two tons of mustard gas and long-range missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads and traveling 300 kilometers. The Syrian opposition sources also claimed that the transfer to Hezbollah lasted 40 days, from mid-February to March 2012, the Saudi daily reported. The chemical weapons transfer to Hezbollah was carried out under the supervision of a senior Syrian officer of Assad. The Syrian source said that it observed these transfers since the beginning of last year. The tankers drove through Damascus, Zabadani, and Serghaya, carrying the chemical weapons in blue barrels labeled “Chlorine Acid.” They took the material to “Hezbollah warehouses and delivered it to a person nicknamed “Abu Talal,” who was subordinate to the party leadership.” Brigadier Ghassan Abbas oversaw the transfer operation of chemical weapons from the Syrian side. Gee ya really hope that is not true?

Iranian government elected - yes, it's true.  But we have to get past the notion that somehow an election makes a government representative or somehow friendly to US interests.  Lord knows we've got problems enough with that issue ourselves.  The fact is that there are people on this planet who would cheerfully elect a government inimical to US interests, and we should be prepared to exterminate an adversarial democracy as aggressively as, perhaps even more aggressively than, we'd flatten a totalitarian state.

389 i'm not interested in the anti-Semitism charges against Hagel (he called the Israel lobby the Jewish lobby, whoopdeedoo) so much as i am in the fact that his naive worldview is cast as hardheaded realism.

a cornerstone of his thinking seems to be that you can't ever condemn a hostile state/entity for any reason whatsoever because it might harm diplomacy. see for example his view during the early '00s Palestinian terror campaign that Israel and the territories were "trapped in a war not of their making," as though what was going on was due to some nebulous impersonal forces.

not to mention his total dismissal of a nuclear Iran as anything of concern. you don't have to favor going in Iraq-style to view this as unacceptable.

This is going to happen.  The RDT&E and Procurement accounts are going to be raped - and to quote Joe Biden "literally" raped - in FY14 and FY 15.

As a matter of fact, it's going to start to some extent this year due to the peculiarities of operating under a Continuing Resolution based (effectively) on FY 10 until April 27 - but operating with a FY13 authorization now.

399 From Breitbart: Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) has vindicated his critics thus far today in his confirmation hearings before the Senate Armed Service Committee for the post of Secretary of Defense. He has stumbled in attempting to explain his positions on Iran, nuclear disarmament, Israel, the Iraq "surge," and the "Jewish lobby." He has failed to explain contradictions between his voting record and his past statements on the one hand, and the positions he professes today on the other. Even liberals and supporters of Hagel are openly lamenting his poor performance. Democrats on the committee are doing their best to inflate Hagel's thin resumé (belatedly discovered by Politico) by mentioning his military service at every opportunity. But they cannot cover for Hagel's errors and evasions--and he has been ably pinned down by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), and others. Hagel's performance has not only undermined faith in his views but faith in his competence. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), whose recent support for Hagel was seen as guaranteeing his success, must be reconsidering his vote. It is clear that Hagel's success is critically important to the Obama administration, which seems to have guided his pre-hearing visits with Senate critics and Jewish organizations, and used the Pentagon to lobby hard for his confirmation. The opening statement by two former Senate Armed Services Committee chairs, the bipartisan duo of Sam Nunn (D-GA) and John Warner (R-VA), was well orchestrated--though Warner's prediction that Hagel's own opening statement would answer every objection may have set expectations he could not possibly meet. It is precisely because this nomination is so important to the White House, and the radical foreign policy it wishes to assert, that Hagel is still likely to win confirmation. The vote will not be about Hagel; it will be about Obama, and the current crop of Democrats has shown little will to dissent from the presidential line. But there is no way, partisan loyalty aside, that any reasonable person could watch Hagel's performance and still vote "yes." His past service may qualify him for many high government positions. Secretary of Defense--clearly--is not one of them.

453 Here at the tail end of this thread,  my 2 cents about Hagel:

I think he was permanently and terribly scarred by Viet Nam.   His feeling, deep down,  is that he was betrayed by the officers and civilian command,  and he has never gotten over it.

Because of this,  he will never, ever sign on to war.  He identifies too much with the enlisted men,  which is admirable,  but is something that would handicap him as Defense Secretary.
