Solutions Update

Easier Problem - Black To Play

20180428 - Problem 1.jpg
kr1r4/8/8/8/8/b7/PBR5/1K6 b - - 0 1

1...Rd1+

Premature is 1...Rxb2+ because then 2.Rxb2 Rd1+ 3.Kc2

2.Rc1 Rxb2+
3.Ka1 Rxc1# mate in 3.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180428 - Problem 2.jpg
5r2/8/4RbP1/5P1K/8/8/8/5k2 w - - 0 1

1.Rxf6 Rxf6
2.Kg5

White must not be hasty with an immediate 2.g7 because 2...Rxf5+ 3.Kg6 Rf2 4.Kh6 Rh2+ 5.Kg6 Rg2+ 6.Kf7 Rxg7+ 7.Kxg7 and the win has slipped through his fingers.

2...Rc6
3.f6 Rc5+
4.Kh6 Rf5
5.f7 Ke2
6.Kg7 Rc5

This is where the advantage of having two advanced pawns becomes appparent. White doesn't have to worry about avoiding pins or skewers because he's happy to trade a new queen for Black's last rook. And then he can queen his remaining pawn unopposed. Which is infinitely better than getting bogged down in a KQ vs. KR endgame.

7.f8=Q Rc1
8.Qe7+ Kf2
9.Kf8 Rc8+
10.Qe8 Rc3
11.g7 Rf3+
12.Qf7 Kg3
13.Qxf3+ Kxf3
14.g8=Q and wins

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

15 It's Game Over for the Switch. The ROM just got jail-broke by USB: tinyurl.com/yclwwjno The Know has a piece here: youtube.com/watch?v=y7NEvb31fJc This means, among other things, that hackers can reprogram Switch games to give them a bunch of cheats before starting them up, and get online with that adulterated game and then beat you. Unfair and square. The exploit can be fixed only in hardware. So Nintendo and its users have a large turd sandwich to eat. Reissue a not-breakable Switch and then ban the previous owners from playing online...?

19 Had to take daughter to the ER this morning. She was no better at all. Still in horrible pain. Took another EKG (normal), another chest x-ray showed what he thought looked like a slight infection in her lung so anti-biotics and pain meds. Gave her morphine and something else in ER and it didn't even touch the pain. She is still in pain, getting ready to take a hydrocordone pill. Jesus... I'm still worried. It seems they really don't know. Prayers please.

RH castle to the bottom, check.
white castle blocks.
black bishop takes white bishop

the black bishop & remaining castle can either kill the remaining white caste, then force checkmate, or go for mate right away.

66 My 17 yr old Lincoln Navigator, which has been like a brother to me (or a good dog), is now semi-retired. Still a great running car/truck, but I felt it was time to replace it as my Daily Driver. So, after much research, perusing, and deliberation, I got a new car! Lexus RX 350. It's only 9 years old! Like a baby compared to my old, loyal Navigator. After looking at hundreds of 2007-2009 near me and on the internet, I found a 2009 with only 33K miles in Michigan. One owner. Wealthy golf fan. Probably retired. This fancy shmancy Toyota is practically *bulletproof*, which means it's built to last a long time. That's why I bought it: to last me many years.

179 I'm going to guess that Melania and Queen Rania were at some function that mandated they not give emphasis to the female form. Rania always dresses modestly, as befitting her station, but she usually isn't bundled up THAT much. Anyway, Melania may have picked that scarf-covered dress for that reason. (?) At least it's a glorious color.

181 Did they get either a cardiology or GI consult in the ER? Do a cardiac enzyme test? Perform any diagnostic imaging? All they did was an EKG and a chest xray. She was diagnosed many years ago with IBS but for years she has been fine. I'm thinking maybe it's rearing it's ugly head again.

182 *raises paw* Why haven't automotive engineers been able to make a single advancement in the field of gearbox trade names in the past 55 years? If someone told me the 2025 RS5 would have a liquid helium-cooled thorium reactor under the hood coupled to a Hydro-tronic Sync-a-matic transmission, I wouldn't bat an eye.

184 I had a 1991 Toyota Corolla station wagon that I bought used in 1999 and kept until 2014. Best car I've ever owned. I finally had to get rid of it because the rust was so bad, but that engine was barely broken in at 160K miles. If Toyota still made Corolla station wagons, I would have bought a new one. I was dismayed to learn that the Rav4 is not available with a stick.

Posted by: Jewells45 at April 28, 2018 06:38 PM (dUJdY) ERs tend to either undertest or overtest in my experience. In this case probably under. If she's had these symptoms before in connection with IBS then she probably should see a GI doc.

Posted by: rickl at April 28, 2018 06:39 PM (sdi6R) I was disappointed to see the RAV4 body turn into literally every other crossover/small SUV just like the CRV did. Remember how people goofed on the Aztek when it came out? Who's laughing now? Also, I've resigned myself to never again owning a car with three pedals. It took like six months for this one to turn up for sale. Most dealerships don't even have one on the lot anymore except in very specific cases.

Posted by: rickl at April 28, 2018 06:47 PM (sdi6R) I let the dealer poke at my 2009 Jewbaru to see what they'd offer for a trade-in last week while I was test driving and they gave me the itemized appraisal sheet. Knocked off like $350 because it didn't have the automatic. I don't get it. If I had to pay more to get the manual, I would. It's not like they're 50-50 anymore, you really have to look hard to find one, and people who want one will snap it up.

I've long maintained that the simpler a mechanical device can be built and perform it's intended function, the better.

44 years of repairing various Detroit anomalies has reinforced that point. I've see way too much tech for tech's sake being foisted on the public in the name of "new and improved."

No argument that improving mechanical systems for longevity and performance is a very good ides, but a huge percentage of new is vanity and one upmanship taken to extremes.

"The National Center for Public Policy Research’s Project 21 warns that Starbucks’ plan to shutter thousands of its stores on May 29 to train 175,000 employees in “implicit bias” could violate workers’ civil rights." Project 21 has been a leader in the black conservative movement for 25 years. They have sent letter to the Dept. of Justice, which you can read at Breitbart. The war has begun. Between this (published today at Breitbart) and Kanye's song dropping about Plantation, the dem war has begun. The cracks have been showing for a very long, long, long time.
