Bradley Effect: Barack Obama Just Can't Get Past the Fact that the Democratic Candidate is Black
— Ace

This cocksucker is the only one mentioning it.

Why does John McCain have to answer for this cocksucker racist's hatred?

Seriously, this low-watt parvenu has been running on the color of his skin for two years. The only one playing the race card here is Barack Obama.

Oh, and Mike Barnicle, spotting some subliminal xenophobia too.

It is true that, unfortunately, a lot of people in this country will vote strictly along racial lines. But we shouldn't extrapolate from a small group of black journalists, now should we?

I was just mentioning to my hot Hispanic wife how all us white people look exactly the same.  Sometimes, when I'm at work, I think I'm looking in the mirror, but in reality I'm looking at another dumpy fat guy with glasses and bad teeth.

Posted by: atnorth at July 30, 2008 04:33 PM (VAF/F)

4 Actually, every time I take out a one dollar bill, I mistakenly think it's my compact mirror, and have to go fishing around for other money.

5 And watching television... man, that's confusing.  I can never remember if that guy is Ty Pennington or Ed Asner.  We all look identical to money.

Bradley effect? What's that, some reference to Bill Bradley? Who played basketball and is one of the few basketball players who don't frighten you, you racist, you??!!1!

But seriously, what is the Bradley effect? If it's really obvious, I'll blame my ignorance on the school systems that oppressed me because of my Hispanic last name.

Researchers who studied the issue theorized that some white voters gave inaccurate polling responses because of a fear that by stating their true preference, they might appear to others to be racially prejudiced. This theory suggested that statistically significant numbers of white voters tell pollsters in advance of an election that they are either undecided, or likely to vote for the non-white candidate, but that those voters exhibit a different behavior when actually casting their ballots. White voters who said that they were undecided break in statistically large numbers toward the white candidate, and many of the white voters who said that they were likely to vote for the non-white candidate ultimately cast their ballot for the white candidate.

Posted by: MamaAJ at July 30, 2008 05:08 PM (X6Zdh)

The Bradley effect refers to Tom Bradley, an African-American, who was mayor of LA and was running for Govenor.  He was way up in the polls, even the exit polls and was the predicted winner but he lost.

The 'effect' came from voters telling pollsters they were voting for Bradley as not to appear racist.  But once inside the booth their votes went against him.

Ya know, Barack can go ahead and scream about racism all he wants, but when it does get racial he is going to know it. If he's used up his "racism" cards by then, too bad.

There will be a photoshop of the new Chicago-style secret service uniform with bow tie and shades. Oh, hell yeah, there is going to be one with the Obamas replacing the Kennedys in the convertible Town Car with spinners and gold trim. Bet on it.

If Obama thinks being called inexperienced is racist, what'll he do when youtube starts sprouting clips of  Steppin Fetchit waiting until the the instant the boss leaves to plop down into the big chair, put his feet on the desk, pull out a cigar and pretend to start giving orders.

Ronsonic @ 12/ "If he's used up his "racism" cards by then, too bad."

Hoping that racecards are an exhaustible resource, I am, and that they're exhausted real quick, like in the next 3 months.  But what's my reason to expect that?  Is there a precedent for it?  There's not one that has a nametag, like "Bradley Effect."
The Dems are treating those cards like they'll never lose value.  Them being wrong about nearly everything else doesn't automatically mean they're wrong about this.

Are you really this stupid Tinian or what?  People are talking about how Obama is playing the race card, of course, but Ace is clearly making the point that Obama is the only one bringing race into the campaign.  Neither the McCain campaign nor any other respectable opponent of Obama has raised any of these issues that Obama keeps raising.  Point me to where somone with influence (the McCain campaign itself or influential Republican or conservative groups or people) is saying or even implying not to vote for Obama because he's black or because he has a "funny name".  You can't because Obama is the only cocksucker bringing it up.  Just like Ace said.

I'm a tired, stupid moron who isn't into inside baseball. Can you please 'splain it explicitly to me, the ultimate 'tard?

Even if everyone in all 57 states kept tires inflated per strict Federal Diktat, you wouldn't save as much gas as wafts forth from B. Hussein's piehole. But as I say, it doesn't matter. No one outside of the dextrosphere will question his pronouncements. If Obastard says McCain is obsessed about Barry's skin color, it must perforce be true. He's just so fucking cute and post-modern, you would be way uncool to doubt him. You won't be invited to the meet-up at the alternative bookstore, dude. No chicks for you.

Change = Skin Color. He's really not proposing anything so different or bringing in anyone but establishment Dems, so the narrative he's stuck with is race.

Since white people have been taught that racism is an original sin problem that they are guilty of when born, naturally it's what the central theme of the campaign is all about; he doesn't even have to worry about being subtle about it, the MSM has his gaffe-back.

Come November 5th, I'm voting for the white guy.

Posted by: cranky at July 30, 2008 09:55 PM (GSjxr)

41 I like what you advised, Stinky, to a degree. Yes, stating the obvious about how "green" Obama is is the right tack, but mentioning "brown," even if to state not caring about skin tone, will only cause Obama et al. and the press his campaign team to double down and say that by mentioning "brown," that obviously McCain has issues with color. That's the way this narrative has always been advanced. The Right cannot avoid being called racist because, by Liberal definition, the virtue of being "conservative" makes one so either overtly or covertly.

Facts don't matter to the narrative. McCain cannot escape it so he cannot push back by logical response and work in color into responses. Certain things have been established via propagandist twist. Obama is eloquent. Obama is new. Obama unites. Obama is smart. Obama transcends. It's all a fabrication. So too will be the racist smear no matter what McCain interjects. He'll be defensive the instant that comes out which is exactly what the propagandists want.

I don't know the best way to respond, but I'd be inclined to suggest McCain stick to the experience ploy and should an accusation of racism or skin tone preference ever, and I mean ever, enter the conversation, that McCain rip them a new one. Make the questioner or the accuser look like the racist for having the temerity to or dishonesty of even posing the idea that McCain has the bias. Yes, the challenged will withdraw and say "well, I'm just floating the charge because 'some say' blah blah blah" when we all know that the float is the smear. McCain should have a canned response, the equivalent of which is a polite (or not so polite) FYNQ.

McCain shouldn't invite color except to mock Obama's sycophants' unicorns and rainbows. But emphasizing Obama's inexperience and thinness of résumé remains fundamental.

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at July 30, 2008 10:14 PM (sI5Ho)

So, lets say Obama get in and we are stuck with him for the next four years.  Is he and his minions really going to be able to get away with forcing all this racist shit down our throats?  Will people just go quietly to the re-education camps?  Will there be lots of silent grumbling and not much more?  Can we riot for once???? I need a big screen TV, too.

Posted by: grc at July 30, 2008 10:18 PM (vk1s8)

I'm thinking that in the final weeks and days before he election, the Obamedia will frame the election thusly: will America shed its racist past and elect the half-black guy, or will America cling to its racist ways and elect the white guy? That's it. No policy debates, no talk of who's experienced and who's a messianic pain in the ass, nothing. If we don't elect the Obamessiah, it's because we're all racist inbred knuckle-draggin' troglydytes. The Obamedia will try to guilt us into electing The Asshole From Chicago.

But gosh-darn that fiendish Constitution. Everyone over 18 gets to vote, even if they're a barely functioning drooling skateboard riding retard. Or an Obama supporter- but, I repeat myself. In our idol-obsessed celebrity worshipping culture, the only thing that matters to many people is being in on the Next Cool Thing. That's Obama- the perfect celebrity. Everyone will want to be in on his election- "I voted for Obama" will probably get a lot of people laid, in certain circles.

And that's why he'll be the next President. Because we are that stupid.

Posted by: Jones at July 30, 2008 10:59 PM (KOkrW)

44 Jones: "In our idol-obsessed celebrity worshipping culture, the only thing that matters to many people is being in on the Next Cool Thing."

See. That's exactly what I was talking about. You certainly nailed one component about throwing off the shackles of American racism which surely will mentioned. But that "cool thing" crap... where did it come from? What the hell made him cool and hip? Or charismatic? Or fill-in-reflexive-compliment-du-jour?

This man looks like a goober and as uncool as the next guy. Not that appearance is everything because I just don't care. I'd vote for a Cray computer if it made rational decisions to help the country. But he's "cool" by virtue of what exactly? His community organizer skills where the projects crumbled under his watch? His editor status at Harvard? His job in the Senate? His bike-riding skills? His racist-worshiping? Which of those accomplishments attracts the babes and contemporary hipsters because it's "cool"? How much dorkier on lifestyle preferences can those choices possibly be?

He's cool because he's the day's most liberal choice. Why, it's a rule inscribed on park benches in Berkeley. Nothing meritorious about it, it just is. Oh, and the press has "the narrative."

Why do so many perpetuate this fallacy, even among the talking-head Right?

Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at July 30, 2008 11:21 PM (sI5Ho)

45 I live and work with a large number of hardcore union to the bone Democrats that will not in a million years vote for Obama. They will nod and assure the Shop Steward that their vote is all locked up and if a pollster asks (in case they are from the union too) will tell them that they will or have voted straight party ticket but when in the polling booth they will vote for McCain and maybe even the downticket Republicans. This election is going to see more accusations of rigged voting and such than we have seen ever before and I know that's saying something.

Posted by: TBinSTL at July 30, 2008 11:44 PM (2vLkB)

46 Econtalk.org had a podcast with a Prof. Rivers who is an expert on polling. He said latest research shows there may have been a small Bradley effect in the 80's but that its pretty much gone now.

Also, polls where Obama was shown to be winning, but then Hillary actually won can be explained by other factors than the Bradley effect.

If unattributed smears are cool now, why aren't we on the offense?

Some Democrats really aren't voting for Obama because he's a good leader. They're voting for him because they hope he'll start nationalizing industries, re-distributing wealth, and emasculating our polity in hopes that the world will reward us for becoming good little peasants in the new shining socialist paradise.

Interesting juxtaposition:

Obama camp now:  John McCain and his Republican allies will try to scare them by saying Obama "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

Obama in Berlin:  “I know that I don't look like the Americans who've previously spoken in this great city.”

Doesn’t Obama need to explain why he’s hurling such undignified attacks at his own campaign?

Posted by: A Reasonable Man at July 31, 2008 08:14 AM (xYlaY)

Obama is not stupid. This frames the discussion of what is and isn't racist in a way that is favorable to himself. By challenging questions about his background as being racially motivated he distracts attention from the REAL race problems. See, suggesting that Obama doesn't look like the guys on the coins won't keep him out of office. Aside from being able to pass for Abe Lincoln's penny if he grew a beard - Americans love novelty and would be happy to get some melanin into the white house. So Obama's got the twofer with this cheap accusation - he's got the accusation to hurt his opponent and more importantly he defines a "racial attack" into a thing that won't hurt him. The real race issues are gonna be tougher for him to answer so he needs to keep anyone from even thinking about them.

The Head Number One Race Problem (what is in charge) is the horrible corruption of so many black politicians in executive positions. Nothing is more important to Obama than making sure that any talk about his color is done in a way that doesn't associate him with whatever corrupt black democrat politicians afflict your part of the country. I don't think it is a coincidence that Obama wins his white primary votes in states that don't have experience of black leadership. So the more he can get the opposition to flinch from that association the better he looks. Since he has no executive or leadership experience of any sort, he has no history to refute the suspicion that he will throw his weight around in a thuggish and unseemly way just like all those other goons. So it's really better for him to charge that racism is about his looks rather than about his party or political culture.

The other OhmyGodthisscarestheshitoutofwhitepeople race problem is the absolute certainty that standing at a future president Obama's side will be a Farrakhan or a Sharpton or some such whipering in his ear that now it's time for those crackers to get a taste of the medicine. Obama has done smart to make sure we all know it won't be Jesse Jackson or Rev Wright, but that isn't the same thing as disavowing that sort of vengeful attitude in principle. In fact his mutterings about reparations will leave him suspect and rightfully so.

As crude and ugly and political as his "sorta" accusations of racism are, it's pretty easy to see why he thinks they make good sense.

54 Everyone will want to be in on his election- "I voted for Obama" will probably get a lot of people laid, in certain circles.

Oh, that sounds familiar. I just went through a variation on this a few weeks ago. A lefty friend (quite do-able, if you know what I mean) jokingly asked me if I'd finally vote for Obama if she slept with me (yes, alcohol was involved). I told her sure, but that I'd bang her incessantly for the next three months, walk into the voting booth in November and pull the lever for McCain with a big grin on my face.

She didn't appreciate my humor.

As do I.  When I started hearing hardcore Dems saying, "What the fuck did we do?," my hopes for the general election started going up.  Whether they stay home or vote for McCain is irrelevant to me.

I share an office with a guy that is the ultimate yellow-dog Democrat.  However, he is also a racist.  He never says anything overtly.  Instead, he always refers to "they" and "them."  By this time in the last election cycle, he had a big, giant Kerry sticker on his truck.  This time, not so much.
