Boston Shut Down Due To Idiotic Guerilla-Marketing Campaign For Aqua Teen Hunger Force
— Ace

I'm less than sympathetic to the ATHF guys, because I don't find the show funny and am tired of people insisting that it is.

Numerous circuit-board type devices, representing an ATHF character, were found around the city, hanging below overpasses and the like. At least one was detonated.

Gridlock all over.

Thanks, Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

2 It was funny the first show because it was original. And the Moonenites were mildly amusing. After that, the only thing funny was the intro with Dr. Weird. Then they stopped doing the intro.

Adult Swim sucks. The shows are written and produced by immature, sexually frustrated, angry, cynical, know-it-all dorks. Maybe that's why Sinistar likes it so much. Zingggggg!

5 It's Ignignokt! He requires porn to sodomize his vast imagination.

Actually, as far as Adult Swim shows go, I think Frisky Dingo was a nice addition to the lineup (from the creators of Sealab, my other favorite AS show). Though, yeah, the lineup's a little thin. Only Futurama and Family Guy (sometimes) are worth tuning in for.

And for God's sake, the fucking anime sucks shit through a tube.

10 Is Venture Bros. on Adult Swim? I watched the first season on DVD and it was pretty entertaining. It took a few episodes to get cranked up, but it made me laugh.

11 All I know is that for me, if I saw something box-like hanging from underneath a bridge...I'd be very very concerned. Actually, freaked-out would be a better description.

I've yet to see a picture of what they looked like. I'm not getting a real clear idea of what's being described other than box-like. Or were they all different from each other?

I can't believe that this promotion has been going on in multiple cities for a few weeks. I'd love to be in one of those meetings where the marketing guy says, "Hey, lets put one of these boxes underneath a bridge, and we can put one in the subway too". I'm amazed that no one in that meeting thought that these things might cause a problem.

20 I note that this campaign is currently running in seven other cities. I note that only residents of one city have freaked out and called in the bomb squad. I note that the bomb squad of only one city has actually blown up one of these devices.

I note these things without comment.

21 I get a chuckle out of the college level southparkesque cartoon shows and enjoy them, but I usually only watch on the weekends, and I tune in for the anime.

AS has good anime. I like everything they're running now.

But the cartoons are funny too. I really like Dethklok Metalocalypse. Funny cartoon and great music!

It was sucking mighty hard for a minute there (Boondocks, Home Movies, and such). Now they've got two solid shows, Metalocalypse and Venture Brothers. Both are mighty damn funny. I'd go as far as to say that Metalocalypes is the funniest show on TV right now.

These so-called "toys" were buried as witches, and defecated upon, and hurled at predators when wakened by the searing grunts of children. It wasn't a holly jolly Christmas that year. 38 "The "packages" in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger. They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Now why am I not surprised that only Boston, Massachusetts is having a hissy-fit?

Since, according to the story, these things have been "part of an outdoor marketing campaign in 10 cities in support of Adult Swim's animated television show Aqua Teen Hunger Force. 48 Okay, my wife (so I have touched a woman, screw you very much) and I used to watch Adult Swim quite a bit. Here's the breakdown:

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law - First two seasons were comedy gold. A whole episode dealing with Fred Flintstone as a mob boss? Genius. Third season jumped the shark big time since they got away from the court cases and had a bunch of stuff that didn't make sense.

Sealab 2021 - More great stuff. We bought this and Harvey on DVD.

Robot Chicken - With Futurama reruns, about the only thing worth watching in their current lineup. When you see Lion-O with 20 cubs after knocking up Cheetarah, your happy childhood memories of watching Thundercats after school will be irreperably harmed. And that's a good thing. Yep, got this on DVD, too.

Moral Orel - Parody of the old Davey & Goliath shorts my sister and I would watch before going to church. A couple episodes were mildly amusing, but as a Christian I can't stomach 95% of it. That's me, though.

Metalocalypse - Too loud.

Squidbillies - Ugh. Who comes up with this stuff?

Tom Goes to the Mayor - Makes me want to stab a fork in my eyes.

ATHF - Agree with Ace. Wifey and I don't find this show entertaining at all.

There are others, but we've pretty much given up on Adult Swim. Your mileage may vary.

Posted by: Darth Cirrocu at January 31, 2007 03:20 PM (0BLsA)

49 ATHF is not all funny, but the mooninites are completely wicked. Boston and way too much of America is just too sissy to get a joke. What, people don't even know what a LiteBrite is anymore? If someone drew Kilroy graffiti, would that make you think you were being stalked? Oh, I'm scared of the McDonald's box on the ground now--it might have a nuculer gut bomb in it! 'Course, if we were really kicking terrorist a__ wherever and securing our borders, we'd have less reason to worry. Under the circumstances, best to just fire up the cartoons and have a laugh.

52 OK, so I DRTFA.

Lite-Brites?

That's what this shit is about? Were they in a box or something?

Posted by: hobgoblin at January 31, 2007 03:42 PM (p1s9n)

53 LiteBrites are a toy.

It's basically a box that's like the shell of a TV. You plug it into the wall, and it's got a lamp in the back of it.

In the front, there is a pegboard surface you place black construction paper over, and then punch through into the pegboard with colored plastic pegs, which then glow from the light behind them.

And you do this because....I don't know, you're 5? You're parents bought it for you? It's like a light-up etch-a-sketch.

They never had cubes when I was a kid, you had 1 surface and you liked it, but you get the idea.

Posted by: Entropy at January 31, 2007 03:51 PM (Uh5fR)

54 Note that Lite-Brites are not for children under the age of 4, because the primary danger arises from eating the tiny transluscent plastic pegs.

And also, the small chance the bomb squad comes into your living room and detonate it is also dangerous.

One time when I was 1 or 2, or so I am told, I got under the sink and ate half a jar of Vasoline.

It didn't hurt me, but my craps where yellowish white for a week.

What that has to do with Lite Brites I'm not sure. I just wanted to share.

Posted by: Entropy at January 31, 2007 03:57 PM (Uh5fR)

55 Ent,

I well remember Lite_Brites (even the liteBRITES! little theme song). But I need to know context, without bothering to read the damn article, (which I did scan, but saw no details immediately, so I dismissed it)

Posted by: hobgoblin at January 31, 2007 04:04 PM (p1s9n)

56 Someone over at the "Blowing Smoke" blog that Jim Treacher posts on put up a bunch of five word reviews for Adult Swim shows. Highlights:

Boondocks - "Someone has a favorite word."
Moral Orel - "See, because, Christians! Get it?

Venture Brothers is pure gold, though.

Posted by: Glen at January 31, 2007 04:26 PM (PmiCb)

57 The context is, that's bascially what this "suspicious box thing" looked like. What a description the article gives, by the way. Yeesh. Is the reporter German?

Anyway, it looks like a friggin Lite Brite with a Mooninite on it. It's a light up sign with a cartoon character on it, ferchrissakes.

I am curious to know who made the initial observation and feared it to be a bomb, and started all this hysteria over an ad.

Fault ATHF if you like for putting it there. Perhaps they shouldn't have put it there without telling the city what they were putting on it's bridges (though I wonder if there aren't a billion other ads and signs and whatnot posted on city property to be noticed if you're actually paying attention).

But the bomb squad shows up, finds THIS, and decides they need to cordon off the area for hours and detonate the thing before looking at it? This is overboard. People in control of this fiasco here just aren't thinking. They're just responding, robotically. And in this case, they're responding to what was a somewhat absurd hysterical reaction in the first place.

Posted by: Entropy at January 31, 2007 04:32 PM (Uh5fR)

58 Okay, for future reference, create bombs in the shape of ATHF characters and everyone will ignore them.

Check.

Posted by: your average terrorist wannabe at January 31, 2007 04:36 PM (56ssE)

59 Moral Orel and Tom Goes to the Mayor are probably the worst damn cartoons I've ever seen on Cartoon Network. Comedy Central actually has them beat though in terms of horrible cartoons (Drawn Together and especially FreakSquad - that's the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen)

I also really don't like MinoriTeam and I can tolerate Robot Chicken but I'm not so hot on it.

Squidbillies is occaisonally funny but often offers nothing beyond outlandish caricatures of redneck stereotypes, but with squids.

Futurama is decent and watchable, but not usually anything that would make you laugh out loud.

ATHF, Sealab, Venture Brothers, Harvey Birdman, Metalocalypse, all good stuff.

And again I must say, I really love Metalocalypse. But part of that is because I'm a metalhead, and they have some really good parodies of metal music and bands that I'm familiar with enough to recognize.

Family Guy is also very funny if you don't mind the occaisional and increasingly frequent snarky liberal jabs.

Boondocks I was very leery of because of the politics behind it, but I actually think it's funny and a good show.

Posted by: Entropy at January 31, 2007 04:46 PM (Uh5fR)

60 Okay, for future reference, create bombs in the shape of ATHF characters and everyone will ignore them.

OMFG there's a garbage can outside city hall, we should block of the area, alert the media, and detonate it.

You don't want terrorists to know that if they just make bombs in the shape of garbage cans people won't notice them, do you?

For the love of god people, magnetic light boards are not potentially explosive devices.

You really, really, really, really might as well start checking neon signs and flower planters too because they're just as suspicious and probably a lot more practical.

I'm with Ace too, ATHF is worse than Margret Cho's puss.

Our reident Sith Lord has AS down pretty pat. Adult Swim was good for a while then it seemed every show went to crappy CA. That's probably why Futurama, Family Guy, and Robot Chicken stand out. Anime may be good in Japaneese but the plots are confusing and I hate having to watch every episode of a serie to know whats going on. It's same reason why I don't watch 24. I prefer episodic TV rather than serial TV.

Posted by: Don Carne at January 31, 2007 06:00 PM (RJDcF)

64 It's same reason why I don't watch 24. I prefer episodic TV rather than serial TV.

They make episodal anime, like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Trigun, Gundam, Ghost in the Shell, ect.

That was one of the things that made Bebop stand out and be exceptional (although also frustrating in it's ending) was that it was totally episodal. And it was totally episodal despite the fact that there was the makings of a serial story. There was a plot under it, maybe.. you got glimpes of backstories and past events left unresolved that still stalked the characters, but they never really got into it. The show ended with all the questions unanswered, all the characters undeveloped. The past was just the past, it might occaisionally visibly bother the character, but he wouldn't tell you quite all of what happened and he wasn't trying to go back and fix it, just move on. No tidy closure for anything. No life altering changes or growth the characters experience.

Because that wasn't what it was about. It wasn't a conventional story with a start, middle, and end. It's just a bunch of space bounty hunters who fate or coincidence finds to be fellow travellers for a short time, and then parting ways and moving on to other stories... and them just trying to get through each day and make ends meet without any foreshadowing or delving into the past for no reason.

In this sense it was very messy and realistic (and it was also very gritty) anime. And the ending is very much the same.

More easily understandable plots might come with less science fictiony ones, though I'm at a loss to think of any that don't have robots or ninjas or something.

Posted by: Entropy at January 31, 2007 06:24 PM (Uh5fR)

65 Or tentacle penises.

Sometimes there's tentacle penised Incubii. Or Sailor Moon type stuff where all the characters in the story universe are either female or shemale.

And stuff like Dragonball Z or YuYu Hakusho where adult content (like peeping toms watching chicks urinate, see: Kame and Bulma in DBZ, or a more sophisticated mature plot like YuYu) is mixed in with teletubby type crap (Maaijin-Bu in DBZ and the baby with the pacifier in YuYu). It allways seems a very strange and alien effect to me.

It's that business where they have a completely different culture. Not 'western'/european. Not like Germany has a different culture then America but a REAL different culture that makes you understand how European cultures are distinctively "european" despite the different minutia. Produces strange foreign crazy stuff that you just have to kind of shrug off sometimes and don't ask questions, just appreciate the bits you do understand.

I mean, sure, the Cartoon Network is liberal, as evidenced by the commercial break bumps in Adult Swim.

76 JackStraw:

I'm married, so I gues that qualifies me on the not touching a woman bit, but the episode of ATHF with Abdrew W.K. was gold.

So FOAS

77 Since, according to the story, these things have been "part of an outdoor marketing campaign in 10 cities in support of Adult Swim's animated television show Aqua Teen Hunger Force. They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco and Philadelphia."

====

The story also says that the first 4 calls about "suspicious devices" all came in at 1pm from 4 different locations. This after nobody called for the first couple of weeks.

Is anyone up for re-election in Boston?

78 D'oh --- just thought of something. Maybe these guys put the billboards up a few weeks ago, got annoyed that nobody seemed to notice, and so called in the "suspicious packages" themselves? If that's the case, throw the book at 'em.

Posted by: Skip Smith at January 31, 2007 09:43 PM (W+Xd8)

79 This is a picture of one of the "devices":

Someone please tell me where the explosives are on this ? Who looks at that and gasps, "BOMB!!!"

I dunno. Are you looking to support them for not reacting idiotically to what are clearly not bombs ?

Or to monitor the voting booths to note all the members of the public who ignored this very ignorable crap ?

Is there any stance in regard to what you just said which would make sense ?

What's your position on the Seattle mayor who was in office at the time the bomb squad blew up a flashlight in a Star Bucks just to be on the safe side ?
Keep him and fire the electorate ?

82 The first call about the device was from a woman at
a subway station who saw a box with wires tucked into the highway overpass buttress. She was spot on to call it in. These morons just were plain old "dense"
and should be facing jail and fines. Unfortunately, because of the Muslims we now in live in this type of society. Also, I know as a Bostonian there is shame that the planes flew out of our airport.

83 Hell yeah. Cause lord knows, the only things with a box and wires is a BOMB!!!!! And, of course, the obligatory LED cartoon charactor. I mean that's the easiest way to recognize a bomb.

Did you seriously look at that picture ? THAT looks like a bomb ?

Posted by: Sherard at February 01, 2007 06:46 AM (l9UkQ)

84 Gawd. I can't spell. Sorry Jack Straw.

Posted by: eddiebear at February 01, 2007 06:49 AM (wnU1W)

85 The thing only lit up at night. Tucked up on a highway buttress and you are down below on the street, during daylight hours, it is an honest mistake. The public is supposed to be vigilant, what country do you live in?

Anyway, see the video, they planted this in the dead of night in highly traffiked >sic< areas.

The person below only saw wires and electronics under a bridge abuttment. Get a clue.

PS I have first hand knowledge on the cab drivers here (some of them flew the planes.) There are a lot of creeps in Boston, of the Islamo sort.

Um, I'm actually making fun of the Boston authorities, chief.

What I was really commenting on was that after these obviously harmless devices being up for 3 weeks in 10 or more cities, suddenly 4 calls come in from 1 city in 1 hour. Doesn't anyone else think that's odd?

Hobgoblin is a fag....... so are all of you people who take these shows for anything other than entertainment. I personally enjoy the shit out of most of them. I am also an animator.(not self proclaimed I get paid for doing it) hopefully, my shows will be important enough for you all to bitch about.

ATHF ROCKS!!!!

This hurts to say, but the City of Boston SUCKS!!!

If this negatively impacts the show IN ANY WAY, I'm going to be pissed.

Don't see the problem. Who would look at them and think: bomb. Effing overblown post 9/11 mentality. Lighten up people. Wake up sheep. The government keeps whittling away at your rights and no one cares.

92 "the age of maturity seems to move every few years to later and later..."

Yeah, that's us late Carter/early Reagan babies. We're sorta a big ball of nasty shit in the plumbing system that is our nation, being the echo of the second burst of the boom.

It's not our fault. By the time we were walking around, all toys had gone from reasonably anthropomorphic poppets to, like, smurfs and snorks and turtles. Which were teenagers, which we vaguely knew was a good thing to be. Also mutants, which was not so good, unless it conferred powers. But ninjas - well, who could resist?

Hence, Aqua teens. I'm sorry, but it makes almost as much sense as teenage fucking mutant ninja tur fucking tles. Not that I won't be waiting in line for the movie this spring.

Not to get whiny, but there's a domination on this board of what I might call the "Red Dawn" generation, while my oppressed brethren had to chew the bitter crumbs of "Broken Arrow."

93 ANNNND another thing - what was the name of that show with the Incan dude with the thing on his wrist that shot out glowing barbed burrs, who flew around in a giant condor-copter with an annoying little kid and a parrot?

I keep thinking "Spartacus," but ... that can't be right, can it?

This has been bothering me for YEARS.
