Boehner's House Passes Short-Term Continuing Resolution, 277-151
— Ace

Why short term?

Some might guess it's to delay the vote on the longer continuing resolution (which will also fund Planned Parenthood, naturally) until it's too late for people to begin the process of primarying out wayward Republicans.

75 off topic, noted at weaselz, from free beacon: Rep. Mac Thornberry (R., Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, assailed President Obama on Wednesday for his continued threats to veto the annual defense policy bill that helps provide equipment, vehicles, and benefits to troops. ..... Josh Earnest, White House press secretary, said at a press briefing Wednesday that "if the president got this bill, he'd veto it." While the legislation would authorize the same amount of defense spending as the White House proposal, it also shifts money to an overseas war fund in order to leave sequestration caps in place - an outcome staunchly opposed by Democrats that want to boost domestic spending.

Yes = bad, No = good:

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) voted yes, as did GOP Whip Steve Scalise (La.), who is running to succeed McCarthy.

But Scalise's opponent, House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-Ga.), voted no. So did Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Fla.), McCarthy's only opponent so far in the Speaker race.

Reps. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) and Dennis Ross (R-Fla.), a deputy whip, who are both running to succeed Scalise, voted no; Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), the chief deputy whip, and Rep. Markwayne Mullin (Okla.), two other contenders, voted yes.

116 What has Boehner got up his hankie? Ok, y'all, this may have been covered in previous threads...but I want to know which Moron captured the raccoon (who was innocently going through garbage) to use in breathylizer to start car. Said raccoon went unconscious from being squeezed, was discarded on floorboard, then sprang to life and attacked the navy drunken guy. This act of bravery by the raccoon resulted in the drunk guy crashing through a fence and coming to a complete stop in a pool. Which one of you did this and have you had your rabies shots? This supposedly happened in Camp Pendleton.

227 They told you they weren't going to shut down the government for any reason.  It's time you started to believe them.

Incidentally, the percentage of the American people who want a shutdown to de-fund PP?  Less than 30.

This was always never going to happen, despite Erick Erickson's fever dreams.

I've told you all day that the Republican leadership believes the best way to deal with abortion is the same way the states have, with Republican control of the entire government issuing executive orders and passing new laws.  They aren't going to piss that away on a futile shutdown effort that only helps Ted Cruz raise money for himself.

You folks need to stop listening to people who are lying to you.  I don't mean the leadership because they have consistently said what they are going to do.  I mean the fringe "true cons" from super-safe districts who tell all kinds of fibs to keep the fundraising spigots open and who never have to worry about any consequences to their own political fortunes for their bullshit fantasies.

Oh, and Manchester United won today, so fuck the soccer haters, too.

Bought our tickets, got our popcorn, and went to the ticket taker (hipster douche but I'm being too kind) who took our tickets and asked Mrs. E if he could check her bag. A tiny little shoulder bag containing her wallet and a SampersandW Airweight .38spc. She asked him why he wanted to check her bag and he said, get this, 'we have had young punks come in here with weapons so we check everybody'. Mrs. E is not a young punk. She told him she was armed. I asked him what he did if the 'young punks' said they were unarmed. He told me he let them in. I said 'give us our money back'. We will not pay somebody to disarm us. Nossir.  Nobody asked us at the Mongolian BBQ. Had they, we would have gone elsewhere. Not sorry for the kvetching.

285 No, I don't want people to abandon hope.  Not at all.  What I want is for people to a). be realistic about what can be accomplished in the real world and on what time-frames, and b). stop listening to people who tell them fantasies to keep the fundraising going.

Ted Cruz is manifestly not a stupid man.  So, why in the hell would he continue pushing a tactical agenda that has been a demonstrable failure in the very recent past, i.e., shutting down the government?  Is he unaware of how much of a failure it was in getting any results, legislatively?  I doubt that.

So, why does he push it?

Oh, that's right.  He's running for president as the "true con" candidate and is at 5% in the polls.  Also, he is from a very red state and isn't up for re-election for a while, so he can afford to be a super-duper snazzy true con warrior with little to no practical consequences to his current paycheck.

Meanwhile, National Right to Life, who actually have a practical goal of eliminating abortion as their mission, support gutting it out, sucking it up, whatever you want to call it, and waiting out Obama until we can get a unified Republican federal government in next year's elections.

Who to listen to?  Hmmm, Ted Cruz and his fundraising pitch or NRTL?  Hmmmm.....

299 >>>Newt Gingrich had the right idea. The way for the GOP to improve its standing with voters of both parties is to start by passing legislation that is popular with solid majorities of Americans (such as ban on late-term abortions), cut in payroll tax, furloughing the IRS, etc. Then dare Obama to veto. --- Not only about this, but also about the need for judicial reform. Lifetime appointments are failing at their original aim of insuring integrity, and instead provide safe havens for liberal change agents. They must end, or else introduce some streamlined impeachment process.

307 "Did not our wunnerful SoS Kerry look stupid standing there beside the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in the presser? The Russian forcefully and clearly laid out Russia's plan and then Kerry weakly blathered about working out some kind of plan."

Strong horse. Weak horse.

(Well, more accurately, "strong horse" and "weak horseface".)

Do not think this is going unremarked in the Arab world, where strength and willingness to use it brutally are the most admired of attributes.

Note that bin Laden's long term plan was to get the USA involved militarily in the Arab Islamosphere via prodding terror attacks, and then demonstrate it to be a weak horse. Which would then undercut the standing of the USA's local client states, most notably Saudi Arabia. Since bin Laden regarded the House of Saud as apostates for having allowed kafirs on the holy soil of the Peninsula at all.

313 On the continuing resolution matter, recall rhomboid's basic formulation of the balance of power as it applies to budgeting.

Omnibuses, continuing resolutions, and "cromnibus" budgeting, passed in one big whack, shift power towards the White House and away from Congress.

Regular-order appropriations budgets, passed in smaller pieces, shift power towards Congress and away from the White House.

So this is just another episode in the long, sad, sordid history of this Congress actively abdicating their own prerogatives as a co-equal branch of government. And a fittingly reeking capstone to the Flaccid Boehner era.

You usually lose. When you win the nomination with your suck-ass candidates, they usually lose in the general.  The only ones who ever win are those in super-safe districts.

Sure, every now and then you win one.  But you would not stay in the majors long with your batting average.
