A few presidents from now will we have a constitutional republic at all, or will we go the route of Rome and have emperors, even without the name?

41 Obama is gonna use Exec Orders to give de facto Amnesty. Boner and Team will sue. 2-4 years from now we will win that lawsuit, but it will be considered unfair to unAmnesty the millions who had been Amnestied for the past 4 years, so ... they will stay Amnestied. The moment Obama does Amnesty by exec order, all the progtard states will grant their illegals every benefit under the sun. It doesn't matter if SCOTUS slaps down exec order Amnesty 4 years later, what's done is done.

I get it, but the President can't just give people citizenship via executive order.  He doesn't have the ability to do it.

All he can do is not deport them, or generally not enforce immigrIn theory he could forgive all past illegal actions by illegal immigrants, but as long as they are here, they are continuously transgressing the law.  IE he cannot offer them prospective amnesty, only retrospective. ation law, and he's already not doing that.

Put differently, if he could just give illegals "amnesty", he's already have done it, instead of threatening to do it.

148 Joking aside, what is Obama ACTUALLY going to do here?

Yes, he can suspect all enforcement of immigration law, but he's basically been doing that already.   So in effect, we get a lot of new illegals coming in.   This (at least in theory) ends in two years if/when he next POTUS decides to enforce the law again.

He can forgive all PAST transgressions by illegal immigrants, effectively giving them amnesty for being here illegally in the PAST. . .but the second that's done, the amnesty is over.  IE, every second they're here illegally, they're violating the law again.  Again, the second he's out of office, anyone here illegally isn't protected anymore.

I don't think he has the ability to just hand out green cards, let alone actual citizenships.  And bluntly, I can't even imagine the hell that would break loose if he tried this.

149 "I get it, but the President can't just give people citizenship via executive order. He doesn't have the ability to do it."
The executive department handles giving people citizenship. If President Obama directs that agency to do so regardless of the legal status of the people involved, there's nothing congress will do to stop it. They will be considered citizens at that point and there's no chance in hell any future president will reverse that for hundreds of thousands of people. He CAN and he very likely will do it.

189 Part of the problem is illegals are granted to so many things already (depending on the state) - such as drivers licenses, benefits, public schools and college tuition, mortgages, Obamacare etc. - that citizenship is almost not necessary.

When you add in the taxation and other obligations of citizenship (jury duty), you're better off remaining illegal.

Obeying the prez to a point.  Once the Constitution is threatened, that takes precedence over any  president.  Just like a soldier can refuse an order from an officer if he's convinced it's an unlawful order.

The US military is not based on blind obedience  to superiors  as some people think.

193 The executive department handles giving people citizenship. If President Obama directs that agency to do so regardless of the legal status of the people involved, there's nothing congress will do to stop it. They will be considered citizens at that point and there's no chance in hell any future president will reverse that for hundreds of thousands of people. He CAN and he very likely will do it.
===

I don't think he'd dare just handing out citizenships, but lets say he did.

The power to grant citizenship is explicitly delegated to the Congress, in the US constitution (Article I, section .   Obama can order his minions to grant citizenship, effectively ordering them to violate the law.  At that point, there would be a Constitutional crisis.  Since *nobody* believes that the POTUS has the power to do this, there would be a court challenge, the court would probably order an injunction to immediately stop handing out these fake citizenships, and the case would be fast-tracked to the SCOTUS, where it would be another open-and-shut 9-0 landslide against Obama.

I don't see how this would be a case where Obama started handing out citizenships (or green cards, etc) and he went unchallenged for two years.

The president can pardon people for federal crimes.  However, that isn't a pardon for future actions, just past actions.  The draft dodgers were pardoned, and that was perfectly Constitutional.  Pardoning people who have violated federal immigration laws is possible, but that only applies to past violations, not continuing violations or future violations.

I call this one " We Defeated Obamacare... Without Even TRYING!"

XXX,

This is big.

Moments ago, the Supreme Court ruled to protect our First Amendment right to free speech and religious freedom.

This is a clear and decisive defeat against ObamaCare, and a victory for the rights of all Americans.

The central issue of the case brought by Hobby Lobby and other family businesses was whether the federal government can coerce Americans to violate their deeply held religious beliefs. President Obama unconstitutionally demanded that businesses and organizations with deeply held religious beliefs give up on their principles for a misguided one-size-fits-all health care policy.

Thankfully, the Court has upheld the proper limits on the government's power -and struck a blow to ObamaCare's intrusive mandate.

This is a significant blow to ObamaCare. The Court ruled against Obama's intrusive and misguided ObamaCare mandate and in favor of personal liberty.

Americans deserve a health care system that allows them to make the right choices for themselves, gives them more freedom, and comes nowhere close to encroaching on their First Amendment rights.

ObamaCare is exposed and vulnerable. The time is NOW to join with the Republican Party and demand an end to ObamaCare so we can start over with a principled, constitutional health care system.

We are now $33,729 away from our online goal -and just a few hours from our midnight FEC deadline. We need your urgent and immediate support if we are going to reach our goal and stop ObamaCare once and for all.
Donate to the RNC before our critical deadline at midnight tonight to put a STOP to ObamaCare.

Thanks,

Reince

217 Congress is given the power to define who and how people get citizenship, but the Executive does the actual granting. If he just starts handing out citizenship, who's going to stop him? What will be done, what reaction would there be?
Have you not been paying attention the last six years? This guy could crucify babies at a press conference and rape a nun to death and the media would blame Republicans for racism if they complained. Women's groups would cheer his support for abortion and punishment of the Roman Catholic Church. And the GOP would issue a stern letter of disagreement with his new Nun policy, offering to work out a compromise where she got to live.
He's already grossly violating the US Constitution, he's done it over and over again. Once in a while a case gets to the SCOTUS and he's slapped but they have no actual power and if he ignores them (as he's done a few times) they can't do anything but get grumpy.

237 Can anyone recommend a good summary of the fall of the Roman Empire ?
***
My 5 minute take:

The prole party (Populares) united with rich bastards (Crassius) against the Republican system.

First they amnestied the hell out of the non citizens (Marius) then they found a charismatic leader who used the power of state to make him de facto king (Julius Caesar) - but who was very good at nominally working in the old system.

The old political class that had worked with him finally realized that once you make a king he's not giving up the power and assassinated him...but Julius's allies Marc Anthony and Octavius (soon Augustus) were able to overwhelm the remnants of the Republic...and while Augustus himself also would still nominally work within the old system, by this point the Republic was dead and gone...

On the positive side, both Caesar were truly brilliant men and there is no one like them in the Democrat party.  On the negative side there is no one on the other side that even rises to the level of Pompey or Sulla, and obviously neither succeeded in stopping the decent into empire.

Oh, and for those keeping track, yes the Roman Republican was destroyed due to government spending and voting in a different people via changing the citizenship requirements.

242 Regarding the military its tricky. Yes, the ground pounders and the low ranks would most likely turn against a total dictatorship or a directly unconstitutional or evil order. But the officers? How many of them are in this for a career with an eye on promotion? How many especially at higher rank are now guys that President Obama and his buds can rely on to do what they're told, or even agree with it?
And how many soldiers, when given a direct order by a superior officer, are going to rebel or mutiny, based on their conscience and understanding of the US Constitution?
Honestly I don't think we can rely on that.

As I remember it, I was told BY THE REST OF THE REPUBLICAN PARTY that Ted Cruz shutting the government down was the worst thing that ever happened to the republic.

But, when the House is reliant on these ridiculous omnibus spending bills and continuing resolutions for purposes of government funding, blanket shutdowns are the only tool in the drawer.

Hey, wait a minute. Is there any reason why the House must work via omnibus spending bills and continuing resolutions? Can't we go back to budgeting whereby the House passes individual funding bills for each government agency, and forwards those bills on to the Senate?

That gives a finer granularity of budget control other than one humongo monster budget bill, and it allows punitive budgetary measures more precisely calibrated than shutting down the entire shebang.

Of course you don't care if you can vote, but the ACLU and the Democratic Party sure do care, and they will file a lawsuit claiming that "equal protection" guarantees that anyone who has all the other trappings of citizenship must be given the right to vote.  And they will win.

275 This man is a menace. Posted by: Kreplach at June 30, 2014 02:53 PM (udRRC) Extreme socialists/lefties are evil, the ends justify the means. Lying has no consequences, law breaking has no consequences.......we don't have an immigration problem, we have a law enforcement problem.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at June 30, 2014 10:27 AM (HVff2)

276 Here's my fear.

Obama orders a bunch of Executive Orders on immigration that deserve impeachment.  Republicans attempt to impeach.

We have nowhere near the votes even if every single Republican and a significant amount of Democrats go along.  So actual removal from office is a pipe dream and would only install Joe Biden.

Obama becomes extremely popular like Clinton when this happened last time.

279 Ok people enough! I've sat back and read the outrage and butthurt today. I have one question. What exactly did ya'll think "fundamental transformation" actually meant? This fucker was serious and we laughed him off as a know nothing/do nothing dipshit. Well guess what? Somebody in DC, either him or the string puller is doing it. It's gonna get a lot worse I fear. Who's gonna stop him? Congress? no. Courts? no. Military? no. The people? HAHAHAHA! This is a done deal folks. Wake up! Tick tock. Only a matter of time now. tick tock

283 I don't think ozero will do anything, now. He didn't move on Bundy and the militias, was afraid of his own red line on Syria, thought one attack in Benghazi would derail his presidency if he admitted it was terrorism, and now has tanking numbers, 29% do not think the nation is moving in the right direction (and immig. is surely part of that number), and he is much bigger at talking than doing. Look for much more talk.
