Boehner: How Does Thursday Sound?
— Ace

I like that he's saying no, but I think earlier would have been better. Why not do it this Friday? This is an urgent problem, you know; why wait, Mr. President?

How about Tuesday the 6th? Remember, this was going to be your tip-top priority... right after your vacation.

At any rate, he will not be calling the House to session on debate Wednesday.

Boehner: "I respectfully invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday, September 8, 2011"

Thanks to Drew.

BTW, I put the Palin speech update into draft, as this is breaking news, and should be pushed out there now. I will publish the Palin thing in a bit.

Full Letter: Boehner says Congress does not even return until Wednesday and there will have to be a security sweep before the arrival of SCOAMFOTUS.

Hah: Thursday the 8th? The start of the NFL season.

51 "...As your spokesperson today said, there are considerations about the Congressional calendar that must be made prior to scheduling such an extraordinary event.  As you know, the House of Representatives and Senate are each required to adopt a Concurrent Resolution to allow for a Joint Session of Congress to receive the President.  And as the Majority Leader announced more than a month ago, the House will not be in session until Wednesday, September 7, with votes at 6:30 that evening.  With the significant amount of time – typically more than three hours – that is required to allow for a security sweep of the House Chamber before receiving a President, it is my recommendation that your address be held on the following evening, when we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks.  As such, on behalf of the bipartisan leadership and membership of both the House and Senate, I respectfully invite you to address a Joint Session of Congress on Thursday, September 8, 2011 in the House Chamber, at a time that works best for your schedule."

Naaa.  They'll just use it to highlight their own ideas.  His will stand in their stark contrast all on their own, we don't need to give them any extra credence by mocking them.

If every Republican says, "The problem is uncertainty, and I'd bring back certainty by slashing the regulatory burden, slashing the corporate income tax rate, and streamlining the personal income tax" (or some variation thereof), Obama's "Tax the Rich" strategy will pale in comparison.

All without a single Republican having to seem "unpresidential" (yes, you know that's what they'll say) by "attacking" the SCOAMF "before he'd even released his proposals."

Nope.  He can't "waive" the sweep, the Secret Service won't let him.  And the sweep isn't done until everyone (including the Speaker of the House) signs off that it's done.

So what might happen is that President Narcissus will petulantly complain about it (hinting, all the while, that the House should change its plans) but either a) nothing will come of it or b) the Speaker can respond with, "Fine, come on the 7th, but the votes are already on the calendar and will take at least half an hour.  You can be received at 10 PM."

We have got to stop worrying so much about what perception the MSM will throw on Republicans, it's all bad, all the time.  Seriously, when was the last time anyone heard anything unqualified "good" about a conservative?  The media's unrelenting message is breaking down just as fast as the economy.

However, it makes for a nice daydream to imagine Boehner telling him "We in Congress are too busy actually passing legislation to address this problem.  So go ahead and have your eighth speech on the economy whenever and wherever else you wish, and while you're at it, how about you actually do something this time.  You don't need our permission and aren't asking for it - after all, you won."

His policies could be undone and the economy would recover.  Obama can't make any compromise, so he'll make a speech.

193 so, have any members of Obama's Praetorian Guard in the MSM bothered to actually ask what it is about the speech that they should highlight. What new and improved idea Obama's goddamned pivot actually is? What pisses me off is that he's probably totally going to propose baby porkulus (if we're lucky) and Boehner's going to cave.

195 That's how it already looks.  It's a nakedly political move.  Boehner should have called him on it and said, "this isn't about jobs.  You just want to be on TV during the GOP's debates."  Instead we are playing along with it.

Sometimes the best way to show what a boor (or bore, as the case may be) someone is is to pretend not to notice they're being a boor.

205 PLENTY of people can call Obama out for the dickish petty move.  Boehner can act like he didn't notice, and is just mildly dealing with a child.  The way Boehner is handling it highlight that Obama came up with this at the last second and is a jackass child.

You are correct, but this is obvious. He must destroy Perry to have a snowball's chance in hell. They decided to do the same when Palin arrived. Vampires, garlic and wooden stakes. Dhimmies cannot stand the light of conservatism (constitutional government). Lets end Sparky's Vampire Economy. No more blood of the young for the living dead.

I heard on a radio talk show yesterday (Gallagher, I think), that the big black bus tour wasn't what it really appeared.  President Baby Pants flew from destination to destination, and only actually rode the bus for a couple miles at a time.  Nothing is real with this guy.

Posted by: Sub-Tard at August 31, 2011 12:06 PM (0M3AQ)

214 As I've always said, Obama's problem is that he just hasn't formed the magical combination of words to express to the primitive people of America the wonders of his plan. That is, how can America ever hope to make anything of itself without his insights? Seriously, though, Boehner should have pulled out the balls card and said we can schedule you in for the third Tuesday in October.

184:  We still need to dance the dance to some extent, though.  To steal an analogy from the NFL, the retaliating player always gets flagged.

Like it or not Barky is President and its unprecedented, to my recollection, for Congress to simply refuse a joint session for a Presidential speech.  This is about decorum stuff that our beloved "independents" get wee-wee'd about, since that fits their People Magazine view of politics (all personality, no policy), and would only garner sympathy for him.  We'd love it, but we already can't stand him.

If we told him to stuff it, the news from Wednesday through the Sunday shows would be about how this is unprecedented, the Republicans are "blocking Obama's jobs agenda," "Republicans put their political fortunes ahead of jobs" yadda yadda.

218 Right?  I'm not sure how these oh-so-smart advisors got him into this corner.

They did it because every other time he had demanded something from Congress, at least as far as face-time goes, he'd gotten it.  I don't think it ever crossed their minds that Boehner might say no.

I am surprised you didn't guess Boer. Fun with words. The answer is boor.

For the record, I was merely pointing out that both words apply: SCOAMFOTUS is both a boor (that is: bad mannered, uncultured) and a bore (that is: boring).

222 >>Obama knows Romney is going to lay out his jobs plan at some point.. and Perry will make his first debate showing on Wednesday night. Obambi is afraid that Perry will (or even Romney) will look more presidential than him.. so he wants to get out in front of this.. I think he's already behind the curve. Usually, the incumbent president sits out the other parties primary and lets them fight it out. By doing this, and he doesn't really have much choice giving the state of the economy, he is joining the fight not laying low. Obama is effectively starting the general campaign months before it normally does. Change!

223 198 - You said what I was thinking in 217 in a much better way.  There's a natural reluctance to call out boorish behavior openly.  It offends people's sense of manners.  If we treat Zero "un-presidentially" I think it works in his favor.  Better a dagger than a sledgehammer in this case.

Posted by: SocietyIs2Blame at August 31, 2011 12:13 PM (yK8YH)

224 Obama made an unusual step here in going public with his request instead of settling this with Boehner and Reid in private. As such, any whining on his part in response to this will be even more pathetic.

This is patently political, and the idea that he needs a joint session of congress to do what is normally done from the podium (this doesn't even merit an oval office telecast) is somehow sacred is some sort of typical GOP wussy, no don't worry about walking all over me play. Boehner should say, give us an outline of your speech to see if it's ground breaking, otherwise, we have some time in December for such a speech. Right after we impeach your AG.
