Argentine President: In 2010, An Obama Administration Official Asked Me to Provide Iran with Nuclear Fuel; Obama Administration Official Confirms Story
— Ace

Jason Howerton at the Blaze:

Kirchner claimed Gary Samore, former White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, visited Argentina and suggested the nation provide Iran with nuclear fuel in 2010, two years into Obama’s presidency.

However, after the government in Argentina requested the fuel transfer request in writing, in keeping with protocol, Kirchner said the Minister of Foreign Affairs never heard from Samore again.

For full context, read her remarks via a transcript from the Argentine president’s official website:

In 2010 we were visited in Argentina by Gary Samore, at that time the White House's top advisor in nuclear issues. He came to see us in Argentina with a mission, with an objective: under the control of IAEA, the international organization in the field of weapons control and nuclear regulation, Argentina had supplied in the year 1987, during the first democratic government, the nuclear fuel for the reactor known as "Teheran". Gary Samore had explained to our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hector Timerman, that negotiations were underway for the Islamic Republic of Iran to cease with its uranium enrichment activities or to do it to a lesser extent but Iran claimed that it needed to enrich this Teheran nuclear reactor and this was hindering negotiations. They came to ask us, Argentines, to provide the Islamic Republic of Iran with nuclear fuel. Rohani was not in office yet. It was Ahmadinejad's administration and negotiations had already started.

Mediate notes the oddness of asking Argentina, specifically, to supply Iran with nuke fuel -- given the bombing a Jewish center in Argentina in 1994, a case officially unsolved but believed to have been sponsored by Iran.

And perhaps there's a reason Kirchner is making this accusation now:

Coincidentally [???-- or not. Ace], the speech by Argentinian President Kirchner coincides with the release of the anticipated documentary film Los Abandanados, which examines the role of Iran in the 1994 AMIA bombing. The film also highlights the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of Nisman, who actively devoted his life to uncovering the judicial misconduct following the attack. Nisman was found dead in January at his home in Buenos Aires, hours before he was scheduled to address the Congress of Argentina.

Jason Howerton has now updated; Samore confirms he went shopping in Argentina for fuel for Iran's nukes.

Story is true that I went to Buenos Aires in August 2009 to ask Foreign Minister Timmerman if Argentina would be willing to manufacture fresh fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor in exchange for Iran shipping most of its stockpile of low enriched uranium to Russia.

As I recall, Minister Timmerman told me that Argentina could not participate in the project because of Iran’s refusal to cooperate in the AMIA investigation. I said that I understood the political sensitivities and accepted that Argentina could not be part of the project.

We subsequently approached France, which agreed to manufacture the fuel for the Tehran Research Reactor.

In October 2009, Iran agreed to the deal: Iran would ship 1,200 kilograms of low enriched uranium hexafluoride (less than 5%) to Russia; Russia would further enrich the uranium to 19.5% and ship it to France for fabrication into research reactor fuel, which would then be shipped to Iran.

The idea is that we'd give Iran mid-enriched uranium and of course they would enrich it no further than that.

It's unbelievable. Unbelievable.

So I his plan is to let the Persians run the show and go back to subjugating the Arabs like they did in antiquities. My guess? Won't work.

187 "What was the reason he was suspended" He was suspended multiple times. In 6th grade he was suspended for several weeks for apparently tampering with a projector in class. He tried, and failed, to claim some sort of 1st amendment protection. In 8th grade he was suspended for fighting, which he blamed on islamiphobia.

192 163  Vic, I am no mean a nuclear expert, but as I understand 3.5 or so is all you need to nuclear fuel. The big hurdle is getting past 3.5.

20 or so is for medical stuff. And as you say, the 95%+ is for weapons.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the "we wanted to just give them mid-enriched fuel" excuse makes no sense because 3.5 CAN be used as fuel, right?

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at September 30, 2015 04:26 PM (AkOaV)

Well, I am an expert.  The enrichment in US commercial reactors runs from between 3.5% and 5% for new fuel going in.  The location in the core determines whether they use the lower or higher enrichment. Also, the higher enrichment is used to obtain longer life cycles to extend the time between refueling shutdowns.

And as I said, the higher you go the more difficult the process is.  Getting to 95% is extremely hard and a long drawn out process. Imagine a beach with a megaton of fine white sand which has a half pound of black sand mixed in it.  And you have to sift out the black sand.  When you start getting down to only a little of the black sand left it gets harder to get the last few grains out.

196 97 Nevergiveup and Vic-- This hashing out of McCarthy's statement illustrates perfectly why he is the worst choice possible for Boehner's replacement. Here you are, two people predisposed to give him a lot of support, and you cannot figure out what he was stumbling through the English language trying to say. He is completely inarticulate and a political idiot. He's supposed to be the backroom guy, the deal man, and not the spokesman! Trump, love him or hate him, is always on the attack. Oftentimes able to reconcile two completely contradictory statements made within hours or days of each other, his raw talent for media people is amazing. Contrast McCarthy and Trump.

200 My impression of Obama is he is much more a communist than a Muslim. I don't think he gives a fart about any religion. But he was raised in a very communist influenced household with communist friends like Marshall and carried that forward in his days in Chicago with numerous communist attachments, some that linger to this day like Val Jar. His Tell Vlad I'll have more flexibility moment was followed by giving in the Russians on virtually every single thing since. From the Ukraine to Cuba to Iran to Syria. He is ceding power to the commies whenever and wherever possible. As I said earlier, if he wasn't aligned with Russia, what would he be doing differently?

CNBC FINALLY relesed the criteria for the next debate. Unfortunaly keeping the pig party undercard.  The real debate remains an overstuffed CF:

To be eligible to appear in either segment, a candidate must have at least 1% in any one of the methodologically sound and recognized national polls conducted by: NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, CNN and Bloomberg, released between September 17, 2015 and October 21, 2015.

To appear in the 8pm debate a candidate must have an average of 3% among these polls. The polls will be averaged and will be rounded up to 3% for any candidate with a standing of 2.5% or higher. Candidates who average below that will be invited to the 6pm debate.

287 Funny - I remember VP candidate Sen. Edwards floating this idea at the debate in 2004: We're worried about Iran's enrichment, but they say they're doing it for reactor fuel, so let's give them the 5% U-235, let someone we trust enrich to just under 20% for their medical isotopes reactor, then they won't need to enrich. Then if they still do, we've really got them. My reaction, then as now, is that it's a wonderful example of a horrible idea doing a plausible (on its face) imitation of a good one. It'd be a fine deal with the kind of country we can trust enough not to need to make this kind of deal with.

This fuel deal is not actually the big deal.  Just a detail of the big deal.

The big deal is abandoning the whole sanctions regime that took years to build, and was "working" about as well as any sanctions regime against a real country *can* "work"  (slows them down, raises their costs, punishes them, narrows their options, raises their risks, organizes your allies, deters collaborators).

A small way to start is to start buying two.  What I mean is this.  If you normally go the the grocery store and on your list is a jar of spaghetti sauce, some noodles, a can of soup, a bag of sugar, a container of salt

Then buy two.  Those are things that you know you will eat or use because you are already using them or eating them.  Every time you shop, buy two of any non-perishable item.  This can be done a little at a time, as your budget allows.  Just remember to rotate your stock so that you're eating whatever is going to expire soonest.

The co-equal big part of the big deal here was taking the boot off of Iran's neck in general.  They're a dangerous, vile enemy that needs to be destroyed (the regime).  The nuke sanctions regime was the largest, most multi-lateral weapon (laboriously built by us) in the arsenal, and it's just been ditched, for nothing.

Of course the other weapons had long ago been left unused (by Obama) - covert political action, kinetic action against IGRC networks and collaborators.  And Bush lost his nerve and walked away from the best/most direct opportunity to fully reciprocate the war Tehran has been waging on us, Israel, and many of our friends.

But now massive financial resources - and quite reasonably a gigantic boost of confidence - flow to this enemy.  For no reason.  THIS is the big deal.  Not the details of a minor operation to smooth the way for abandoning the nuke sanctions.

366 >>The co-equal big part of the big deal here was taking the boot off of Iran's neck in general. They're a dangerous, vile enemy that needs to be destroyed (the regime). The nuke sanctions regime was the largest, most multi-lateral weapon (laboriously built by us) in the arsenal, and it's just been ditched, for nothing. And who benefits most with the lifting of the sanctions, aside from Iran of course? Russia. It's been a friggin weapons bizarre for them since the sanctions went down and in return they get a stronger alliance in Syria and Iraq, big presence in the Med and oil and gas. Lots of both. And that is their currency. I don't believe a bit of the kabuki bullshit between Obama and Putin. Obama is bending over and taking it day after day. I keep hearing people say why? Well when every other possible answer is exhausted you are left with the obvious, this is the result he wants.

Apparently someone thinks prepping involves underground bunkers and hidden weapons caches.

About 10 years ago we had a a gas pipline break which caused gas shortages. It was hardly armageddon time, but it got a bit ugly.

Made me realize if something that was a moderate problem at best could cause that kind of disruption, something more significant could be a real mess.

386 I don't get the negative connotation regarding prepping. Just a few years ago, Louisville got hit with ice storms. My rural neighborhood was impassable, power was out, for five days. We did have water. And some families were reduced to asking neighbors for help, because cupboards were bare. My neighbors cooked out in the cold, and we put all the little kids in one spot at nite and ran electric heaters off the generator. If water stopped, we could filter. Prepping is good for alot of things. Folks used to call that being prepared.

396 They way I remember it, back in the day, Iran claimed their nuclear enrichment program was for fuel for the peaceful nuclear reactor. So the argument then was we, the west, would supply Iran with fuel for the reactor if they would stop their enrichment program. So this just confirms that story. The west was ready to supply Iran with fuel and there was no need for Iran to continue their research program. Gradually Iran made the claim they would not be dictated to, and would continue their enrichment. So then the argument was about whether or not Iran was trying to develop the bomb. Which, as time went by, became the idea that we have to stop Iran from developing the bomb, and that gradually morphed into we can't stop them, sanctions are useless, and the sanctions are just making Iran more determined to continue. (It's the old argument that killing terrorists just makes more terrorist. Being mean to Iran just makes Iran more determined to do it anyway.) So. . here we are. Everything we thought about Obama from the very first day is confirmed, and denied by Obamabots who reject any evidence of what Obama is doing. Deny, reject, cover up, insist on an alternate reality. Deny conservative predictions, and when those predictions are proven true, deny the truth. Lie, deny, reject, ignore. "They", 'those people', 'them' can not possibly be wrong about anything. . . ever.

446 Back in the day, we used to prep by shelling beans into a bowl all day as kids. But we liked it, because mom and grandma would let us sit with them in a circle and talk. There was a flood in our neighborhood when we lived in austin. Thankfully, our subdivision was equipped with really good flood management so our house was fine, but we were completely cut off from the rest of the city. The gas station in the neighborhood opened up and took cash to let us buy water but if they hadn't we'd all be stranded without food or water for 2 days until water and electricity came back online and the flood receded enough to pass. We had enough to be ok, but it definitely opened my eyes to how quickly things can go bad.
