Are You Smarter Than An Eighth Grader In Science?
— Ace

I got an A-. They all seemed pretty easy, but I guess they weren't, as I booted at least two of them.

I think I blew the one about the final velocity of a falling stone. I kept thinking that 1/2 should be part of the expression (and thus the answer), but I now realize the 1/2 enters it when you're talking about distance covered. 1/2 (g)(t)(t). I think.

So there's one I blew. I kinda think I blew another one by not picking my first answer, which seemed too obvious, instead chosing a more unfamiliar term which seemed more "sciencey."

1 You are a frackin' jeenyus. I got a C. Hey, I'm a finance and econ guy...

2

I got an A (96%).  w007!11!  High-school graduate ftw!

Posted by: idiotsavant at June 30, 2007 01:32 PM (qp19R)

3 I got a B, but missed the bonus true/false question: "can fire melt steel?"

Posted by: genghis at June 30, 2007 01:35 PM (HwY1l)

4 A- myself . What? No global warming questions?

Posted by: Mark in Spokane at June 30, 2007 01:38 PM (hipFm)

5

B+ - I decided to not reread the questions but go with my gut instinct.

btw - Wii's Big Brain Academy is teh suxor.

6 92%, read it and weep.

Posted by: 1sttofight at June 30, 2007 01:41 PM (IXpFN)

7 A here (96%)... I missed the velocity one as well.

Posted by: eightlgddj at June 30, 2007 01:45 PM (OWGIZ)

8 Pfft, as if they'd ask questions this difficult in school these days.

Posted by: Francesco Poli at June 30, 2007 01:47 PM (cIIfp)

9 A (96%) - I missed the question about mountains eroding.  I thought the question was vaguely worded.  I said mountains eventually wear down to plains, which is true, because the correct answer made it sound like the process of orogeny is related to mountain weathering.

Posted by: OU_Gryphon at June 30, 2007 01:58 PM (HUjun)

10 silly Gryphon...orogeny is related to the orogeny-ness zone

Posted by: genghis at June 30, 2007 02:04 PM (HwY1l)

11 Only missed the meteor meteorite meteoroid one, and I shouldn't have, considering I just watched 2 hours of "meteor's fire in the sky" and 4 hours of "the universe" on the history channel.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at June 30, 2007 02:09 PM (QTv8u)

12 ou had to re-read that one a few times before I got it, I was pretty close to botching it out of frustration.

Posted by: Wickedpinto at June 30, 2007 02:10 PM (QTv8u)

13 Whoo boy!   I get some code!

14 B- not too bad but the mistakes were from not rereading the questions, and about half a dozen bong hits(for Jeebus).

Posted by: Don Carne at June 30, 2007 02:13 PM (2WszO)

15 B+ here --- dang.

Posted by: USCitizen at June 30, 2007 02:14 PM (4HWub)

16 How could you guys botch the final velocity question?  The only possible answers were 0, 1, 10, and 100 m/s.  Think about what happens to a falling object.

Posted by: MikeX at June 30, 2007 02:16 PM (GLMrI)

17 Well I scored 81 on their coffee addiction quiz.

Posted by: max at June 30, 2007 02:17 PM (OYeDg)

18 I got an A+, but I'm a chem student.  Then again, it did take me forever to get the damn test up and running....my NoScript extension was causing me trouble and I couldn't figure out what was wrong.....I guess I'm not a natural born computer programmer..... :-P

Posted by: MikeX at June 30, 2007 02:18 PM (GLMrI)

19 So there's one I blew. I kinda think I blew another one by not picking
my first answer, which seemed too obvious, instead chosing a more
unfamiliar term which seemed more "sciencey."

Lemme guess...was it the tectonic plate question?

Posted by: MikeX at June 30, 2007 02:20 PM (GLMrI)

20 can someone help me out and point me a link to the cowbell girls and bush holding a cowgirl.  My google-fu is weak.  I want to demonstrate Ace's "humor" to someone

Posted by: joeindc44 at June 30, 2007 02:22 PM (zJxz3)

21

73% which is (coincidentally?) also the amount of time I was stoned in 8th grade science class.

I have 2 bachelor's degrees-in business. (it was a 2-for-1 deal that day)

Posted by: CozMark at June 30, 2007 02:24 PM (4Mfly)

22 I totally got an F, man I should have just googled the answers.

Posted by: ac1 at June 30, 2007 02:27 PM (LL6yU)

23 A+, 100% correct.  Yeah, not all that hard.

Posted by: Jeff B. at June 30, 2007 02:41 PM (oRT5o)

24 I had forgotten how much I disliked Jeff B. Well, now I remember.

25 joeindc44,

here you go...

I love these things . I scored an A (96%). I missed a geology question. I hold an advanced degree and haven't thought about the answers to these kinds of questions in years.

Posted by: Hank Rearden at June 30, 2007 03:03 PM (ES4Ca)

27 80% (B-), but I got the velocity question, so ace can just suck it.

Posted by: OregonMuse at June 30, 2007 03:31 PM (X9IHf)

28 Why does it take me to a singles search site? And why does it seem so offended that I'm looking for someone between the ages of 1 and 99?

Posted by: wahhaw at June 30, 2007 03:33 PM (KyHUV)

29

D minus. Woo hoo, I passed!

Who says that men are better at science?

Posted by: esoterica at June 30, 2007 04:07 PM (OG/vg)

30 96% A. Missed the one about metamorphic rock.

Posted by: dicentra at June 30, 2007 04:23 PM (AIGFR)

31 Yeah, I thought the metamorphic rock question was vague.  Technically, there is no reason igneous rocks couldn't be found at great depths (they are) or why metamorphic rocks couldn't be found at the surface (they are)

All that time being a couch potato watching science shows wasn't wated after all.

Maybe next year the national spelling bee.

Sorry Ralph,

I got a B.

34 Missed the mammal respiration one... damn, I could've sworn Algore said all of us were like total mouth-breathers!  Next thing you know we'll find out there's other sciencey stuff he's a bit dodgy on, and then the whole internet will just fucking collapse.  Just when I was starting to really enjoy giving Senators the old knee to the groin.  Shit!

Posted by: sherlock at June 30, 2007 05:02 PM (ojW85)

35 C , oh well, I read this blog.
Hey Toot, watch out for the speed bumps.

I got a B- (80%).

Right there with ya, Done Carne.

I think.

Posted by: TXMarko at June 30, 2007 06:09 PM (yulBA)

38 I was told there would be not science on this blog.  Science is over rated anyway, that's why we import brown people like Tushar into this country...to do the hard stuff.

Someone needs to notify Al Gore:

The source of energy for the Earth's water cycle is the
Sun's radiation

Posted by: TXMarko at June 30, 2007 06:20 PM (yulBA)

40

Question:  Do you think Al Gore could pass this test?

I would put money on him failing, unless he had staff present to feed him answers.

Posted by: TXMarko at June 30, 2007 06:24 PM (yulBA)

41 Do you think any of the democratic candidates or any senator could pass this test?

Posted by: OU_Gryphon at June 30, 2007 06:52 PM (HUjun)

42 MF'ers. Damn. I didn't realize that all of you turdsicles lied so damned much. I'm a fart smeller...erm, "smart feller"...and I got a "C?" I'm calling bullshit on every single one of you. I could split atoms [as Ace says] with my muthafrackin' mind, and the vast majority of you innertube surfers get As? No. Fucking. Way. Nuh unh. I ain't buying that snake oil. *moan whimper whine*

On my word and honor and Boy Scout medal, it has never ever occurred to me that you could be thought of as a genius.

How did you do on the coffee addiction quiz? 100% again?

Posted by: max at July 01, 2007 01:06 AM (OYeDg)

45 I think those quizzes might not be very scientific.  I took the geek test and only got a 74%.  I'll have you know that my future wife once found a fully disassembled stereo receiver on the floor of the bathroom of my apartment.  In my house, computers outnumber humans by almost three-to-one.  74% my ass!

Posted by: OU_Gryphon at July 01, 2007 05:17 AM (HUjun)

46 I got an A+, but I took the test with one lobe of my brain tied behind my back...

Posted by: ahem at July 01, 2007 02:50 PM (imaSd)

47 Missed 1, and I teach biology. Color me embarrassed.

Posted by: drolmorg at July 01, 2007 02:52 PM (IFLDA)

48

Got a B.  Color me surprised--guessed lucky on a few.  Expected a D.  If the test were about language I'd tear it a new one, but science?  "Don't know much about a science book..."

49

I got question 12 wrong.

Q: Is the offspring of an asexual organism genetically identical to its parent?
A: Yes

I allowed for errors and changes that could be introduced into the code of the offspring.  I should have known that evolution was impossible, along with genetic drift...
