And Now Prudential, Too: ObamaCare Will Cause $100 Million Loss
— Ace

How did this help Michelle's kids?

Insurer Prudential Financial Inc. said Monday that it will take a $100 million charge in the first quarter in relation to the recent health care overhaul legislation.

The life insurance and annuities provider said in a regulatory filing that it will take the charge against earnings in the first quarter.

Prudential joins a growing list of companies that have said they will take accounting charges because of the health care bills. AT&T said last week it would take a $1 billion charge in the first quarter. AK Steel Corp., 3M Co., Caterpillar Inc., Deere & Co. and Valero Energy have also said they would take smaller charges.

Prudential said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that the health bill signed into law by President Barack Obama last week and a companion measure he is expected to sign Tuesday will reduce its tax deduction for retiree health care costs beginning in 2013.

Companies that provide prescription drug benefits for retirees have been getting subsidies covering 28 percent of eligible costs but could deduct everything they spent on the benefits — including the federal money — from their taxable income.

That subsidy was to induce companies to keep retirees on their own corporate plans rather than dump them into taxpayer-funded Medicare. Now that they've cut the subsidy, not only is it costing these businesses money, but many are thinking of giving up the subsidy and dumping them into government health care.

Remember, if you like your insurance, you get to keep your insurance.

And Henry Waxman is going to drag these CEOs in front of his committee, to harass and threaten them, and badger them into answering why they're bound to accurately account for additional new tax costs.

In fact, Waxman doesn't want an answer to that; what he wants is for companies to hide these new, embarrassing costs illegally, so that Democrats don't have to answer questions about them. And he figures harassment and the threat of punitive legislative action should be enough to give other companies the hint.

Preemptive Strike? Rich Lowry says it's part of the Democrats' plan to claim that all negative consequences of this bill are due to a conspiracy between evil corporations.

Just another Obama lie.

And with the media harping on the bondage story and other assorted nonsense, info like this may slip through the cracks for many Americans..until they're off their corporate plan and onto the crappy gov't care.

And that'll lead to..only chaos.

I fully expect all companies to heave their retirees onto Medicare D.  Hell, I'd argue it is a breach of fiduciary duty to stockholders not to do so.

Great.  Thanks for making me look into what "fiduciary duty" means...

"Fiduciary duty" -  An obligation to act in the best interest of another party. For instance, a corporation's board member has a fiduciary duty to the shareholders, a trustee has a fiduciary duty to the trust's beneficiaries, and an attorney has a fiduciary duty to a client.

I understand that sentiment, and shareholders should make sure the boards are held accountable.  Having said that, I hope these CEOs sac up and bring the noise at these hearings.

Big companies are easy to hate when you don't work for one or enjoy their services/products.  But given the current mood,  the public is likely to side with fat cat CEOs in a face-off with Nostraldomas and his statist committee members.   Especially when the numbers are so starkly stark.

I realize this is third hand, but Jim Geragty reporting the following from Howard Fineman:

A Democratic senator I can’t name, who reluctantly voted for the health-care bill out of loyalty to his party and his admiration for Barack Obama, privately complained to me that the measure was political folly, in part because of the way it goes into effect: some taxes first, most benefits later, and rate hikes by insurance companies in between.

Besides that, this Democrat said, people who already have coverage will feel threatened and resentful about helping to cover the uninsured—an emotion they will sanitize for the polltakers into a concern about federal spending and debt.

I'd love to know who this idiot mofo is.

The dems have already claimed that government can do everything better than private corporations. That was their main argument in favor of their "public option" Fannie Med. Their basic argument, that the overhead of executive pay cannot compare to the streamlined efficiency of a government-run corporation that doesn't have to pay millions to executives, was a general argument for the government o run all businesses.

I was surprised that no one jumped on this insane argument back when the dems were screeching it every twenty seconds.

Or the illegal forced nationalization of the oil fields that led to many of the problems which the Shah mitigated.

For some modern perspective, all threats emanating from the arab/persian/muslim world start and stop with control of the gulf oil fields.  A fact that many in the West are loathe to admit, though it is perfectly obvious.  The arabs and persians have had the fields for 50 years and have nothing to show for the trillions of free cash that have flowed through their hands other than causing massive problems.  Even with that great windfall, the arab/persian/muslim world still produces nothing of value and have illiteracy rates that rival any dirt poor nation.

132 This one is for Purple Avenger:

March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Henry Waxman called the chief executive officers of AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., Caterpillar Inc. and Deere & Co. to provide evidence to support costs the companies plan to book related to the new health-care law.

Waxman of California, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and subcommittee Chairman Bart Stupak of Michigan released letters they wrote to the executives, saying their plans to record expenses against earnings as a result of the law contradict other estimates. The lawmakers requested the executives appear at hearing Stupak plans on April 21.

“The new law is designed to expand coverage and bring down costs, so your assertions are a matter of concern,” Waxman and Stupak, both Democrats, wrote in the letters yesterday. “They also appear to conflict with independent analyses.”

As an engineer, PA can certainly appreciate the irony of lawmakers who cannot distinguish between "is designed" and "is intended."  Waxman, Stupak et al may have intended their law to expand coverage and bring down costs, but they didn't bring to bear any actual design expertise to validate beforehand whether their law would in reality do either of those things -- or whether it was even possible to accomplish those things with a law, ANY law.

What's to shred?  Most of their idiocies and crimes are enshrined in video.  The dems were more than happy to tell everyone with a camera how they fucked the US over.  Back at the end of 2009, when people were asking what the Indonesian Imbecile had done in his historically pathetic first year, the dems all latched onto his only "victory" - shoving that insane Porkulus through Congress without letting anyone read it.  That was their point of pride.

They have said enough, on the record, about their health scare to jail the whole lot of them.  And even the things that they said that weren't criminal, were criminally stupid - like the House Judiciary chair who cited "the good and welfare clause" in the Constitution.  It's really stunning.  Historically stunning.

Young man, I am afraid your speech was a trifle short. You could have said at least one hundred other things, varying the tone of your words. Let me give you some examples.

In an aggressive tone: "Sir, if I had a nose like that, I would amputate it!"

Friendly: "When you drink from a cup your nose must get wet. Why don't you drink from a bowl?"

Descriptive: "Tis a rock! A peak! A cape! No, it's a peninsula!"

Curious: "What is that large container for? To hold your pens and ink?"

Gracious: "How kind you are. You love the little birds so much you have given them a perch to roost upon."

Truculent: "When you light your pipe and puff smoke from your nose the neighbors must think the chimney's afire."

Considerate: "Be careful when you bow your head or you might lose your balance and fall over."

Thoughtful: "Place an umbrella over your nose to keep its color from fading in the sun."

Arcane: "Sir, only the beast that Aristophanes calls the hippocampelephantocamelos could have had such a solid lump of flesh and bone below its forehead."

Cavalier: "A hook to hang your hat upon."

Emphatic: "No breeze, O majestic nose, can give thee cold - save when the north winds blow."

Dramatic: "When it bleeds, it must be like the Red Sea."

Admiring: "What a fine sign for a perfume shop!"

Lyrical: "Is that a conch shell? And are you Triton risen from the ocean?"

Naïve: "Is that monument open to the public?"

Rustic: "That don't look like a nose. It's either a big cucumber or a little watermelon."

Military: "The enemy is charging! Aim your cannon!"

Practical: "A nose like that has one advantage: it keeps your feet dry in the rain."

There, sir, now you have an inkling of what you might have said, had you been a witty man of letters. Unfortunately, you're totally witless and a man of very few letters: only four that spell the word "fool." But even if you had the skill to invent such remarks, you would not have been able to entertain me with them. You would have uttered no more than a quarter of such a jest, the first syllable of the first word, for such jesting is a privilege I only grant myself.

I'm psyched.

166 The Hammer@118,

I agree with you to a point which explains my preface with ethics and half-spine. More than one CEO (and I hope they do collude on their message as an implicit F.U. to the socialists) will have to make pointed responses even if their intent is not to embarrass the administration but rather to meet legal obligations to their shareholders and the SEC.

The incentive now if past tactics were merely to bow before the Precedent? Self-preservation. These CEOs are at the helm. Their performance is at stake. This expense will be huge and probably eternal. They better have a good explanation for their investors or they'll be out of a job. Now is their opportunity to provide a defense. Sure, golden parachutes will give them a soft landing should they follow the old, perceived path of least resistance, but I don't think any of these chiefs want to get bumped off because of the foolishness, whim, and assholery of Obama.

171 You know, with all of these companies coming out, it's shocking to think that many of them were so gung-ho about obama. even wall street donated to obama's campaign by a margin of 4 to 1 over mccain, and yet wall street is target two. it galls me that these morons are now complaining, and that they didn't see the writing on the wall when obama was running. he told us up front what he was going to do, and i personally was called several names i will not mention because i continually tried to tell people that obama was a far left radical that did not believe in free market capitalism. yet, here we are, and it is clearly evident that he is indeed a leftist ideologue of the worst kind. perhaps these idiots didnt think he'd really be able to do what he said he was going to do, or perhaps they just didn't research thier candidate enough - but either way, they are reeping what they have sown. now, let's hope that some very rich ceos and entrepeneurs will get back to thier roots and start supporting someone that will let them conduct business.

obama has got to go. he absolutely must be a one termer. we simply can not afford 8 years of this leftist, wack job, ideologue. let's hope that big business will stop voting for dumbocrats and start backing the party that believes in putting in a full work day and keeping your hard earned money.

187 Byron York sez -

Organizing for America, the permanent Obama presidential campaign, is offering a free certificate to the “over one million supporters of reform that submitted their name as ‘co-signers’ of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.”  OFA says it is doing so to thank those who showed “the broad support that exists across the country for the health reform bill” that Obama signed into law. “It’s free — even the shipping — and it’s personalized with your name,” says OFA. Please allow 6 – 8 weeks for delivery.

The certificate says: “Together, we reduced the cost of care.  We established the toughest patient protections in history.  And we achieved the dream of generations — high-quality, affordable health care is no longer the privilege of a few, but the right of all.” When you read the “privilege of a few” part, remember that about 85 percent of Americans have health care coverage, and the overwhelming majority of them are happy with it.  In what way is that the “privilege of a few”?

joeindc44:  Here's a thought experiment for the left...try explaining why someone is wrong without attacking that person or industry. Just explain why they're wrong.

They can't.

I don't mean to say that doing so would ruin their arguments; I honestly believe they're unable to do what you suggest. People on the Left (not just the leaders but also regular, rank-and-file folks) don't reach conclusions based on facts, logic or reason. It's always injustice, outrage, fear, anger and despair.

In other words, it's always emotion, and it always seems to be the negative emotions. (I suppose you could say that they display positive emotions -- love for the planet, faith in the government -- but I don't think these are genuine.) They attack people and industries because these emotions are easier to stoke and manipulate if there's an enemy.

Remember: Our side is based on the quest for profits which can only be gained when ingenuity, capital and risk are deployed in the service of others. Their side is based on the notion that all of history is a struggle between the economic classes.

We give -- more precisely, we exchange value for value. They attack with the intent to conquer and plunder. That's all they do. That's all they know.

Jones, you and D'oh are very civil and accommodating to your liberal relatives.  As a white hair, I bucked up and kicked all my liberal weiners their butts to the curb.  No more presents for their ill-mannered food throwing little buttheads at Christmas, no more birthday presents, no accepting invitations to their homes for the ass reaming

Last but not least, they have no idea that when the Grim Reaper visits my abode, both my Trust and Last Will and Testament will direct all remaining assets to such worthwhile organizations as Children of the Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund, USS Missouri Memorial Association, etc., and others.

As to the liberal relatives, fuck them and their condescendingly arrogant children.  Get a job.

Posted by: GarandFan at March 30, 2010 07:44 PM (6mwMs)

None. Notice that these fucks never have a non-public CEO in front of their Show Trials, where someone would actually tell them to piss off. Public corporations are lorded over by the SEC and their CEOs are generally pussies and are easy to intimidate.

285 199 OT: From ABC.....

An award-winning Iranian nuclear scientist, who disappeared last year under mysterious circumstances, has defected to the CIA and been resettled in the United States, according to people briefed on the operation by intelligence officials.

The officials were said to have termed the defection of the scientist, Shahram Amiri, "an intelligence coup" in the continuing CIA operation to spy on and undermine Iran's nuclear program.
