Alaska Reporters Plotting To Sting Miller Campaign With Made Up Stories? UPDATE: TV Station Responds
— DrewM

A brief recap of the Alaska Senate race to date:

-Insurgent candidate backed by national tea party organizations and national conservative super star, who just happens to be from the same state, defeats entrenched Republican hack in primary. (Check!)

-Entrenched Republican hack Senator refuses to accept the judgment of her party and flirts with running on minor party line. When that fails, she launches long shot write-in campaign. (Check!)

-Insurgent candidate's security staff gets into fracas with editor of online political website. (Check!)

-State Supreme Court invents new rules to help long time incumbent to bitterly cling to her long shot hopes. (Check!)

-The race can't get any more bizarre. (Check!)

Big Journalism has the recording and transcript of a voicemail accidentally left on a Miller campaign staffer's phone from a reporter for the Anchorage CBS-TV affiliate. In the conversation reporters (possibly including the station's news director and assignment editor) discuss trying to identify sex offenders at a Miller event and using social media outlets to announce that "Joe Miller punched at rally".

Palin is, um, pissed.

Corrupt bastards. CBS/media plot against Joe Miller before our Anchorage rally Thurs Kinda'what I've put up w for 2 yrs

No comment so far from the station or the reporters propagandists involved. I'm sure they will say, "hey just joking! Don't you wingnuts have a sense of humor?"

Funny one guys! You know just like when MurCOKEski had a talk radio host thrown off the air for supporting Miller and criticizing Her Royal Cokeness.

I know some of you will say the idea of an "objective media" is a joke in itself but I would disagree. The MFM are objective...objectively hyper-liberal partisans.

UPDATE: Monty sends along the station's confir-denial...Yeah, it's us but it's not what you think it is.

A press release issued Saturday October 30, 2010, by the Joe Miller campaign claims that KTVA personnel, "openly discuss creating, if not fabricating, two stories about Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, Joe Miller." KTVA General Manager Jerry Bever says, "It's unfortunate that this recording has happened. It's unfortunate because it does not accurately reflect the journalistic standards of our newsroom and the garbled context will no doubt leave more questions than answers. The Miller campaign's analysis of the recording is incorrect in many material ways ranging from personnel involved in the conversation, the interpretation of conversation snippets and the reported transcript of the perceived garbled conversation."

"While the recording is real, the allegations are untrue," said Bever. "The recording was the result of a cell phone not being hung up after a call was placed to Randy DeSoto, Joe Miller campaign spokesperson, Thursday afternoon to discuss Joe Miller's appearance on that evening's newscast. That phone call was placed near the end of a coverage planning meeting in our newsroom regarding that evening's Miller rally in downtown Anchorage. The group of KTVA news personnel was reviewing potential "what-if" scenarios, discussing the likelihood of events at the rally and how KTVA might logistically disseminate any breaking news."

Bever continues, "The perception that this garbled, out of context recording may leave is unfortunate, but to allege that our staff was discussing or planning to create or fabricate stories regarding candidate Miller is absurd. The complete conversation was about what others might be able to do to cause disruption within the Miller campaign, not what KTVA could do."

While Bever would not discuss any personnel issues linked with the recording, Bever says "Have we had internal discussions about the level of professionalism we need to bring to our conversations, internally and externally? Of course we have, this is a lesson to learn from."

It's tough to say for sure without knowing what was said before or after but let's be honest...that snippet was not a "what if" conversation. The whole bit about at least one person being a child molester and "...I’d wait until you see who
shows up because that indicates we already know something..." demonstrate trying to hide their knowledge not that they are reacting to it.

19 OT, but at last night's rally in Danbury - I was there - McMahon reported that her internal polls show her within two points of Blumenthal and surging.

By the way, McMahon is a VERY impressive figure.  The woman has presence and genuine warmth... unlike the creepy zombie the Democraps nominated.

I thought that might have just been campaign hype, but today Polipundit is reporting the same stats for the Governor's race in CT.

I'll be surprised if Mitch needs anything, he's not going be the Majority or Minority leader.

24 Remember the SNL skit poking fun at NYT reporters "investigating" Palin? Of 100 or so wanna-be investigattors only 3 get to Alaska -- one is eaten by a bear, one sues the state for allowing ice to make a walking hazard, and one wins a prize for exposing the still-un-disproven allegations of incest between Todd and Bristol. Ha Ha Ha. So first they assume theres a preevert in the Miller crowd, then they send 100 reporters to go "expose" the still-to-be-un-disproven facts.... Ha Ha HA. Life imitates SNL.

Hard to say what the short term destiny is for Mr. McConnell (aka "Butterface"),  but with the election of Rand Paul from Kentucky, I don't think the Kentucky Republican party is going to be too beholden to him if he fails as the Senate party leader.  I would bet money he has a strong Republican-Teaparty challenger in his next re-election race.  This whole episode with Leeza McSlutski has left a bad taste in the mouth of a lot of Republcans that are paying attention.

At this point, for his own good, McConnell should be wishing Joe Miller wins in Alaska.

Actually - it is looking more and more likely lately.  RCP has shifted California back into the tossup column (it was "leaning D") so the Senate might really be in play.  If the R's win 6 of the 8 really close ones (CA, WA, NV, CO, IL, PA, WV, CT), and Lisa Murkywurky wins, then she will indeed be the 51st "R" vote.

I agree it might not be difficult to find something on our side, but to say that is the same thing is to take it for granted they're on the other side.  We take it for it granted, but a decent percentage of the population (including, for reason, the reporters themselves) don't.  These guys would be normally be insulted to be compared with Jonah Goldberg.  They deserve to be embarrassed some more.

82 Any and all polls are suspect at this point.
The normal liberal playbook with polls is in high effect.

Step 1:  Show R's way ahead to energize the base.

86 If the R's win 6 of the 8 really close ones (CA, WA, NV, CO, IL, PA, WV, CT), and Lisa Murkywurky wins, then she will indeed be the 51st "R" vote.
Posted by: chemjeff at October 31, 2010 11:40 AM

That would require Moocowflopski to actually, you know, BE a Republican.

Something tells me Miller will take this, no matter what the "polls" and doom-sayers think. Write-in candidates have a poor track record historically.

Of course it would be nice to think that Fiorina can finally put Ma'm Boxer out to pasture, but if I had any money, I wouldn't bet on it. When all is said and done, it's still California....

Posted by: MrScribbler at October 31, 2010 06:50 AM (Ulu3i)

87 Yes, but I think we can count on Joe Miller actually, you know, acting more like a conservative.  If Murkywurky wins, will she even vote for a Republican as majority leader?  She'll be another RINO questionmark vote.

Exactly!  It's like dressing up a pig and acting all shocked when they wallow in the mud.  I've had to vote for crap before but I'd rather vote for a good guy who loses than a bad guy who wins.  At least I don't feel like scum after.

I was always taught (and have observed it to be true) that if a guy wants to generate zero resistance based on his appearance, he needs to lose the facial hair.  Now maybe in a place like Alaska it's less true, but I've always found that there is a certain percentage of people who really react badly to facial hair, especially beards.

Look, look, the key thing to watch for is this--on this Tuesday, on election day, a bunch of people are going to go to the ballot box and vote.  One candidate is going to get the most votes and that candidate will win.

I appreciate having insight from Wisconsin about what is at the heart of the Republican Party, as I'm sure you all do.  In Milwaukee, you get plugged into rumors about polling you wouldn't hear in other parts of the country.  But we need to focus on turnout.  Turnout plays a big role in an election.  I think Republicans will have an advantage in turnout.

The problem is they're going to say they were joking.  In addition, Miller is a public figure, which makes a suit for slander tougher.  Also, it didn't go out to any third parties; it was just among themselves.  This is good for embarrassing them and showing what Miller's up against, but he'd have a hard time making a legal case.

176 The NRSC responds to ABC and Politico (neither of whom have any credibility):

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is pushing back against reports today that they’ve pulled away from Joe Miller in Alaska. AN NRSC e-mail just went out with the following statement from Rob Jesmer, the NRSC’s executive director: “While I’m sure ABC News enjoyed leading Politico’s Playbook this morning, it might have been more useful if they had actually taken a moment to contact the NRSC before running this inaccurate story.  Joe Miller not only has the full support of the NRSC, but he’s actually featured prominently in our TV ad which is running still today statewide in Alaska.”

NRSC communications director Brian Walsh also points to their boss, Senator John Cornyn, on This Week this morning:

·         AMANPOUR:  “Let me ask you about Joe Miller in Alaska – our Jon Karl, political correspondent, is saying the GOP is basically giving up on Joe Miller or thinking he’s not going to win.”

SEN. CORNYN:  “That’s not the case – what we have done, we are supporting the nominee of our party which is Mr. Miller.”
I suspect if he sounded a little more like Sarah Palin on Fox, he could have put this storyline to bed.

Yes they will steal a number of states.  When races are close, as many of these are, democrats win.  Just like Al Franken did.  What will be telling is the fact the come Tuesday night I bet at least half of the races will not be decided.  That will come a week or two later or even longer as Democrats keep stalling until they can "find" enough votes.

Nah, I disagree with you there.  I just think that we won't get the Senate.  I think the Dems have set keeping the Senate as their goal knowing that the other two are lost.  I think we pick up 7 which I believe gets us to 49 in the Senate.  We will do very well in the House (close to 70) and gubernatorial races (at least 30 governors when it's all over).  Still very pudding-worthy.

And the other important thing is who is going to lose.  If Angle pulls it off in Nevada - which she should based on polling but is only in doubt because of Democrat fraud - then that's huge.  If Boxer loses to Fiorina, that's huge.  There are a lot of Dems who have been sucking the country dry for so long and they are going to have to find jobs next year.

243 I am surprised that no one has mentioned that for any broadcast media entity to be shown to taking affirmative steps, or conspiring to do so, would be in violation of the terms of their broadcast license.

All broadcast media hold their licenses as custodians of the public trust. To openly attempt to slander someone, or otherwise attempt a significant ploy to affect the public opinion or the outcome of an election violates that trust. While the particular offense may not be civilly or criminally actionable, it is nevertheless of great interest to the FCC.

Any citizen has the right to march down to the broadcaster's business office and ask to see their FCC license file. They also have an absolute right to submit a letter expressing their concerns regarding the broadcaster's conduct and/ or policies, and require it to become a part of that file.

It doesn't hurt to write to the FCC, either. Please mention the fact that the broadcaster's conduct is in violation of their role as custodians of the public trust.

There's an example.

We've been the nice guys for generations. I'm not saying we should beat guys like, Kenneth Gadly(sp?) just for showing up at a rally. That is what unions do.

246 "Any legal morons care to weigh in on whether or not the "reporters" broke any laws?

Is there an law like, "conspiracy to commit slander or libel"."

Defamation (libel and slander) aren't crimes: they're torts, so Miller would have to sue.  As a public figure, he'd have to meet the "actual malice" standard of NY Times v. Sullivan: i.e., prove to a jury by "clear and convincing evidence" that the defendants knew what they were publishing was false, or acted with "reckless disregard for the truth."  It's doable, but it's a very high hurdle to jump.  Proving the existence of a civil conspiracy to commit those torts would be even more difficult, as he would have to prove an actual meeting of the minds between the alleged conspirators and substantial steps in furtherance of the conspiracy.

Key for me is if Mooky wins... then they have a "formula" to destroy candidates who they see as the REAL threat... those unwashed outsiders like Christine O'Donnel... who BOTH parties tried to destroy.

They like their inside the beltway monopoly on Power, and BOTH parties IMO will (wink wink nudge nudge) cooperate to ensure there is no real change in HOW Washington operates...

no one's going to remember that Sarah got dragged into this by hubby, no one.   SO, when you get lemons, you make lemonade and she's gracious and a good sport.  But what this is really about is trouncing Sarah and trying to do it in her own state.  This morning Chris Wallace basically said "geez, you are doing ok, making a mint, having fun, going all over the country, good times, good times, Sarah, why the hell would you want to ruin all this fun and money making by being president?"   ok, he didn't quite say it that way, but close enough, you get the gist.  It was too funny.  Poor BO tweets and no one notices, Sarah tweets and there's a tsunami of activity around one tweet within seconds....but hey, she's not a star or anything.

294 Poor BO tweets and no one notices, Sarah tweets and there's a tsunami of activity around one tweet within seconds...

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's top spokesman, P.J. Crowley, sent a birthday message to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who turned 54 this week. There were two short messages.

"Happy birthday President Ahmadinejad," the first tweet reads. "Celebrate by sending Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer home. What a gift that would be."

The second tweets reads: "Your 54th year was full of lost opportunities. Hope in your 55th year you will open Iran to a different relationship with the world."

Then Sarah Palin responded, presumably wanting to seem knowledgeable on foreign policy. The effect was as comical as Christine O'Donnell saying she wanted to serve on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee while not being able to name a Democrat on that committee that she looked forward to working with, but instead mentioned Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman.

"Happy B'day Ahmadinejad wish sent by US Govt. Mind boggling foreign policy: kowtow & coddle enemies; snub allies. Obama Doctrine is nonsense." Her message continued in a separate tweet: "Americans awaken 2 bizarre natl security thinking of Obama Admn: Ahmadinejad b'day greeting after call 4 Israel's destruction speaks volumes."

I'm with Karl Rove on whether Palin has sufficient gravitas for the White House and whether O'Donnell is fit to serve in the US Senate (before she magically made his dick disappear, that is.)

310 She's not a rino, and has nothing to do with conservatives, Republicans, or even independents.   What she is, is a troll that frequents Palingates.   The biggest "OMG!    Trig is not Palin's baby" site.

Thanks. A Sullivan/Johnson type at best. I'm reassigning it to maid service.

311 It's really quite amazing that the people of Alaska can't see through the smear campaign against Miller being done here by the establishment and the media.  You have to wonder why it is they all want the coke-princess re-elected so badly.

Then again the absolutely vicious smear campaign against Jeff Perry (MA-10) is probably going to work to elect an unaccomplished Democrat hack carpet-bagger, but frankly I thought the people of Alaska were a bit more sophisticated politically than the average voters in deep-blue Massachusetts.

Sad.

I read a letter to the editor on one of the AK online papers last night.   The jist of the letter was...wait for it...Please re-elect Murscruntski because OMG! she brings in bucketloads of Fed money, and we can't lose that.

I hope & pray that the idea that most of us have about the independent spirit of most people of AK will prevail when they put Miller in the Senate.

Soros Matters is demanding that Sarah Palin release the full audio.

Uh...why not demand the CBS affiliate do that, since that conversation must be on more than a few CBS employee phones?

And just what kind of "media matters" does Media Matters really care about, since in this case they are defending media malpractice?

Sarah has answered this many times.   Shes removes it when she will be shaking hands a lot, because it hurts.

I understand that completely, because having your ring cut into your finger by strong handshakes over & over, it hurts like hell.

I posted on the other thread that I was wrong and gave the link at gateway pundit for the chris wallace interview.  My tv has been blue for weeks now, I"m savings for a new one, they've gone up in price and sometimes it isn't as clear as I'd like it to be.  When gateway pundit put up the tape you can see she has a flat gold band on her finger.  So sorry.  I did however think it would have been great for her not to wear it to give the cozy kids some busy work in the days running up to the election.....

317 Zimriel, wouldn't you welcome Senator Murkowski's vote, if Republicans win 50 senate seats this Tuesday, despite the teahadists embarrassing antics?
Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at October 31, 2010 02:46 PM (mHQ7T)

Skeezer Murkuntsky is shit in human skin.  She's corrupt piece of garbage and I'd rather the Dem McAdams won than her, even if it costs us the majority.

Now fuck off you pathetic little sucker of ten thousand cocks.

If Murkywurky wins, will she even vote for a Republican as majority leader?  She'll be another RINO questionmark vote.

If Alaska's version of C.S. Lewis' White Witch does win, she will know that a significant [the Patriot/TEA Party] portion of the Republican Party will be out for her metaphorical blood.  At the same time, the Democrats who are far closer to her than the base of the Republican Party is, will be offering the sun, the moon, the stars, large containers of small unmarked bills, and a night of bliss with the Leftist Hollywood Airheads of her choice in whatever complicated formations and combinations she chooses; if she switches parties.  Especially if she can deny the Republicans control of the Senate.

An honest politician is one who will stay bought.  No one has ever accused "the Arctic Maggot" [Sarah being "the Arctic Fox"] of being anything near an honest politician.  Her whole existence for the last several months has been confirmation that she cares not for the country, Alaska, the Constitution, or her friends and supporters in the Institutional Republican Party.  She would happily make Arlen Specter look like he is faithful unto death in comparison, if she thought it was to her benefit.   And it would be both in character, and in accordance with recent history if the candidate that the Institutional Republicans supported over the Republican Base rolled over and betrayed them.

If a Republican control of the Senate is in any way at risk due to any single or combination of defections; "The Black Hole of Girdwood, Alaska" will be part of the defection.

321 Got one of those automated calls an hour ago.  From the democrats urging all democrats and INDEPENDENTS to switch from voting for Scott McAdams to LIAR MurCOKEski, cause she can keep the federal dollars and programs going in Alaska!  The nerve of these cokesuckers!

How about you guys sending a few bucks to help JOE MILLER fight the corrupt bastards in Alaska.

THIS ISN'T JUST AN ALASKA ISSUE, IT IS NATIONAL BECAUSE WE NEED JOE'S VOTE IN THE SENATE, AND IF LIAR MurCOKEski get re-elected, it is more of the same CRAP SANDWICH, except with extra CRAP!

This corruption is coming from Obama and the democrats who are desperate to keep Joe out of congress

Someone tipped over my bike while I was in the office late one night, and now I need a new front and tail car parts. I've read all the horror stories about melting, scratching, and fitment issues with car parts. But are their any fairings that reach a middle ground between the HK/China crap and the expensive OEM stuff?
