Adam Carolla: OWS Represents The First Fruit From 20-25 Years of Esteem-Building "There Are No Losers, Both Teams Win!" Coddling
— Ace

Hmm... he makes some good points.

I should mention he curses a lot, in phrases like "there are no f***ing Participation Trophies in f***ing real life, you f***ing moron."

Thanks to Dave @ Garfield-Ridge.

I see that the cops have had to bring in the Hazmat gear to clean up after the Occupy LA band of merry dickbags.

LAPD Forced To Wear Hazmat Suits To Clean Up Occupier Camp, Protesters “Storing Human Waste For Unknown Reasons”  (link to WZ)

Isn't there some kind of drug out there made from feces fermented in urine or something?  Or is that an urban legend?  If there is, then I'd propose that as the reason why the Occupiers were storing their "waste."  Hell, they'd probably try it anyway because they're stupid hippies.

66 True Story from the Gen Y:  I rented my condo to a nice young couple last year. After spending what they felt was an inordinate amount of time cleaning the place upon moving in, the girl's mother called me to voice her displeasure.

This person was an adult, about 25 years old, that had her mom give me a call.  Her mom.

I called the tenant back and calmly told her that we had a contract, which allowed for contact between the lessor and lessee, not the lessee's mom.  She cried.

Needless to say they moved out after about 9 months and bought a place 4 houses from mom, with help on the down payment.

67 10 or 12? Start them at anklebiters at 7. 12 is way too old. Soccer is great for 2-6 year olds. After that it's a girls' sport. I would even encourage girls to play lacrosse and field hockey.

I can't stand the sight of lawn fairies. And their obnoxious parents who think no one is ever going to "get hurt."

If a boy starts football young where the age/weight ratio is arranged it is virtually impossible to "get hurt" (I think they mean concussions) in youth. If they've played since age 7 then when they try to play in high school they know HOW NOT  to get hurt. All the little fairies whose mommy wouldn't let them play when they were 8 because they would "get hurt" now are getting concussions because my 200 lb 6'2" son who has been playing for10 years is about to knock them out of their shoes.

Besides heading the fucking ball without a helmet does considerable damage---probably the real reason behind OWS.

Soccer teaches a very practical life lesson - that if fake being hurt, you'll get free stuff at the other idiot's expense, all courtesy of the official running the game.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You ain't seen nothing yet.

The creepy Maoists that infiltrated the school system since the 60's and 70's have wreaked so much shit in the schools...

These idiot kids are just the tip of the iceberg...hopefully, we can stop it before it's too late.

Oh, so they don't like rich people...then what happens when they're all gone, you fucking retards...

You ever think about that? No, because the Commie teachers have supplanted thought with sheep-like conformity...and you lash out with signs and masks of the V guy and all your sharp thinking about rich people.

YOU'VE BEEN HAD, YOU'VE BEEN SNOOKERED. You wanna live in Detroit? Make the whole country a shithole?

Apparently...

Most demographers designate those born from 1965 to 1982 as Gen-X

Strauss & Howe put them from 1960 to 1981

Yeah, the uppper end has been slowly ratcheted up over time, though it finally seems to have stopped.  Originally, I was considered to be at the tail end of it, now I'm solidly in the middle.

So many of my old classmates are doing this protest shit, and Carolla said exactly what I've been bottling up all this time. @186 Well, if you were raised Catholic, you were obviously indoctrinated into the white male patriarchy and were therefore guaranteed a job at an oil company or something so your success doesn't count. Sarcasm aside, though, it probably does: I'm fourth of five in a tribe of Catholic bookworms myself, and wouldn't you know it, we're all doing pretty well for ourselves.

194 I love listening to all the armchair athletes bagging on soccer.  What would you prefer?  American football?  That's just what kids need to learn to play. After all, slow fat kids have to play sports, too, right?  And who doesn't love mindlessly executing the "plays" without ever thinking for yourself?  And timeouts after every thirty second exertion of effort?  And sucking oxygen on the sidelines if you have to run more than thirty yards in a row?

And the NFL is a great example of capitalism, ain't it?  Salary cap, revenue sharing, a draft that rewards failure, powerful players' union.  All to achieve "parity" so no team's fans ever feel sorry for themselves too long because everybody makes the playoffs every few years by design.

Yeah, that's much better than soccer, where you can spend what you want on players, and if you win you move up in leagues and if you lose you get punished with relegation.  And you have to pay for your own damn stadiums and you don't have players' unions to dick around with. And the clock doesn't stop so everybody call fall asleep watching truck commercials.

My kids all play soccer and they're tough as fucking nails.  My 11 year old runs 8 miles over a ninety minute period twice a week all while controlling a ball with his freaking feet.  And he can fire that thing into the upper corner from 18+ yards out.  He laughs at his cousin who plays American football because that kid gets winded if he has to run more than 5 minutes in a row.

Football is a socialist fucking sport in a capitalist country.  Soccer is a capitalist sport in socialist countries.  And kids who know how to play soccer laugh at the fucking morons who get "participation" trophies.  You start playing select or indoor past the age of 9 and there ain't no more fucking "self-esteem" medals in soccer.

Sorry to rant, but I'm goddamn sick and tired of ignorant dumbass crapping on soccer and associating it with losers like the OWS turds.

I listened to Mr. Carolla for a year or two when he had a morning radio show in Los Angeles.  He usually makes fairly good sense.  My understanding is that he has a real up by your bootstaps personal story.  We should be looking as Republicans to appeal to Mr. Carolla's fan base.

------------------

I was born in 1962.  I am NOT a gen-Xer, and I am NOT a Boomer.  My parents didn't raise me to be self-indulgent and self-important as the twits who exemplify both of those "generations."  Coming of age in the 1970s was goddamned depressing.  The economy was in the toilet, we had a president who resigned, a war we lost thanks to political meddling, and skyrocketing energy prices because the greenies launched their first salvo which paralyzed our domestic production.

But just when I thought there was no hope, along came a guy named Ronald Reagan and changed the way I (and thousands like me) looked at the possibilities for America.  By the time I graduated college in 1984, I knew we had a chance at a prosperous future once again.  And I voted for Ronnie with alacrity.

I identify much more with the Reagan era than I do the smelly, self-indulgent hippies or their grungy children.

201 @198.  Well, I can't be expected to reason you out of a position you didn't reason yourself into in the first place.

Everybody likes what they like.  American football to me is like watching paint dry.  4 hours to play 60 minutes?  Gimme a break.

If you simply must have a contact sport for "real men," watch rugby.  At least those dudes have to run and they don't cover themselves in armor.

@194

Lots of kids love to play American football, and they get a lot out of it.  Discipline.  Strength.  Teamwork.  Enduring failure, coming back to succeed.  All the same benefits one gets from soccer.  Four of my cousins parlayed their athletic prowess into football scholarships at Big Ten colleges.  Today, one is a vascular surgeon for the Army, who's put back together many of our young men and women in Iraq/Afghanistan; one is a teacher; the other two, successful businessmen. A high school classmate didn't get a football scholarship, but football gave him the discipline he needed to earn an engineering degree from Purdue, not exactly a school for weenies.  He's been a successful engineer for over 20 years now.  None of these men were slow, fat slobs as you imply.  And evidenced by their non-football success, none of these men are mindless executors of someone else's plans, either, also as you imply.

BTW, my kid played soccer for several years--and received "participation" trophies.

Put a pack of 13 yo girls on a field together in cleats and the obvious occurs.  The only thing better, or worse depending on persepctive, is allowing them to have sticks with which to play field hockey.

Ha, ha, ha!  In my early teens I played field hockey and well remember all those bruises on my ankles.  But you should have seen the ankles of the other team.

Posted by: Decaf at December 01, 2011 02:37 AM (0LHB0)

206 @206  Fair enough.

The main point of my rant was to illustrate that the same kind of arguments against soccer, i.e., personal-preference, emotionally-based arguments, can just as easily be turned against American-rules football.  Consequently, grand extrapolations on politics or culture are just as invalid when applied to either sport.

A kid who applies himself can learn great things from all team sports.  those that don't, won't.  And participation trophies are not unique to soccer.  I've seen them presented to kids in all kinds of sports, almost always at the very young age levels.

Most parents only keep their kids in soccer long enough for the kids to reach the minimum age for other sports that they prefer more, so they never get to see their kids advance past the very basic level of the game.  So all they remember about the game is the cluster of little kids around the ball and the medals at the end.  That's like thinking tee-ball is the same as MLB, or even your average high school baseball club.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but in Cincinnati soccer clubs, once the kids are above 8 or 9 years old, nobody is handing out trophies to kids just for showing up.
