A Tale of Two AP Polls: One Finds Americans Seeing Doom and Gloom, The Other Finds Them Optimistic
— Ace

Trouble is both headlines are based on the same poll.

Well, not exactly. The "optimism" story relies heavily on anecdotal tales of optimism. The doom and gloom one relies more on the actual poll findings.

Still-- if you can spin the same poll as yielding two perfectly contradictory results, doesn't that mean neither is correct? And that really the MSM is far too in the business now of not doing straight reporting but providing "overarching narratives" and engaging in "storytelling"?

One poll, two contradictory stories -- you can choose to run either one in your newspaper. AP can sell you happy or AP can sell you sad; the truth doesn't matter much, so long as you have an AP story running.

Question: Is anyone else happy to see 2006 go? A true annus horribilus. ("Annus horribilus" is a Latin term for "Andrew Sullivan.")

2007's gotta be better. Right?

Please: Is anyone going to do a photoshop/animated gif of the ball falling in Times square, except with Saddam dropping from the gallows?

People, you've got like three hours left.

Gank: Annus horribilus, not terribilus. Duh.

Thanks to Francesco Poli for pointing that stupidity out.

1 If you flip 2007 upside down it looks like LOOZ. Then if you flip it it reads ZOOL. Now flip the Z and it read 2OOL.

200L == TOOL which encoded in Octal then squared and converted to hex results in 666

This is why Bush is the antichrist.

2 I think it's Annus Horribilis, actually.

Last time I said something like that was at the end of 1973.

I only played the demo version, but I know exactly what you're talking about.

6 if you can spin the same poll as yielding two perfectly contradictory results, doesn't that mean neither is correct?
No, it means that, at most, one of them is correct. In fact, if the two conclusions are exhaustive, then one of them has to be correct, according to the law of the excluded middle.

7 The only good facts from the poll are from the personal experience answers. Their opinions about the nation are interesting but shouldn't be considered true to life, and can easily contradict their experience.

So far as I'm concerned that whole godawful decade is dead to me, and everything produced during it should be purged from the history books.

Say it ain't so! Why, the 90's had a ton of good things come out of it like, er, um, Vanilla Ice! Yeah! Ice, ice, baby! And George Foreman's grill. Ah shit. Who am I kidding?

Well, I had a helluva time. Can't remember most of it but it looked like I was having a good time in the photos!

12 Just because some polls can be interpreted in 2 ways doesn't mean they both are false, especially if one interp is based on anecdotal evidence of select respondents and the other on actual numbers.

14 Good evening. As a duly designated representative of the City, County, and State of New York, I order you to cease any, and all, supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin, or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension.

That ought to do it. Thanks very much, Ray.

15 The two articles were pretty clear: in one, as has been mentioned, the answers focused on each individual family's experiences. The other data-driven article focuses on how people see things going for the entire country.

It's easy to see how someone can see that their own little corner of existence is moving along better (or worse) than is their whole country.

Isn't this just giving both sides--the good news and the bad--as many folks who post here think the MSM needs to do more?

That's a good thing, isn't it?

You'll have to work on your reading comprehension skills in order for that to happen.

PS And if you think we all agree on everything, go read some of the 'Evolutiuon' vs Intelligent Design threads.
