2014, A Year of Lies and Panics
— Ace

The Year of the Fainting Couch, as Rich Lowry terms it.

The fainting couch doesn't have the same cachet it did in the 19th century, which is a shame, because it should be more in demand than at any time since the age of corsets and delicate sensibilities.

To put it in Victorian terms, 2014 had a case of the vapors. It was all aflutter. It needed smelling salts and a fan, and a good rest on a fainting couch to restore its bearings.

It was a year when the national pastime of taking offense and of fearing that someone might be offended reached such parodic levels that Kim Jong-un got in the act....

It was before so much time and energy were invested in taking offense and coddling the offended. It was before the nation needed a fainting couch.

Robert Traczinski calls it the year of the Narrative, which is a polite way of saying "lie."

I think you can begin to see why 2014 has been the year of Ben Trovato [a made-up name used to indicate an explanation is actually a fable]. It has been a year full of things that were non vero, but which had really good narratives. Or at least really convenient narratives.

It may not actually be true that Michael Brown had his hands up and was saying "don't shoot" when a Ferguson, Missouri, police officer shot him--the bulk of the eyewitness testimony and physical evidence indicates otherwise--but "hands up, don't shoot" is still a great slogan because it's such a good "metaphor" and captures a "larger truth." Ben Trovato at work.

Like Al Sharpton, Ben Trovato has frequently been invited to the White House, where he spent some time hanging out with the son Barack Obama might have had, before swinging over to the First Lady’s office, where he prompted Michelle Obama to describe how an incident at a Target store shows that she still needs to fear being mistaken for the help because she’s black. Proof of America’s persistent racism. Sure, she told the same story a few years ago with a totally opposite meaning. But you’re missing the point. The point is that the new version of the story is well constructed to convey an important narrative. It has Ben Trovato’s fingerprints all over it....

We live in the age of Ben Trovato now, and this year announced that fact loud and clear. Any time there were people with a cause in need of a narrative--and not too particular about whether it was supported by the facts--he was there. Which means that he was everywhere.

He rounds up the various lies perpetrated on us by the Clerisy. There were more of them than you know.

These lies need to be called out.  There is no need to attack Obama directly.

But I would simply say "since when did it become acceptable to lie to the American people about their healthcare."

What Obama and his minions did was fucking lie and lie all day to the American people.  If the GOP doesn't have the balls to call that out, then they should die quickly as a party.

And incidentally, the phrase on the rag appears to have originated in late 1800s New Orleans brothels; and ragtime music, which appeared about the same time and in the same place, is named after the phrase.

The lies of the clerisy.  Yes, that.  It seems to me that the clerisy are getting a little shrill and defensive.  Like they are having this nagging feeling that things are not going as well for them as they ought to be.

Things like the NYT scolding the NYPD for turning their back on DeBlasio - maybe it isn't such a smart thing to insult the Praetorian Guard - and forgetting that he ran against the quality of life policing (stop and frisk) that teh officers are now refusing to do.

Things like Obama falling back to Holder, Sharpton, and his pen-and-phone set.  If he was actually riding high he wouldn't be hunkering down and trying to go it alone, he wouldn't be working hard to keep the core of his coalition in tight.

Things like the SJW getting pushed back - hard - by groups like gamers (of all people) and in their narratives on the campuses (campi?)

Things like the self-indulgent perpetual protests evaporating the sympathy and tolerance of, well, everybody who isn't protesting.

When people get shrill and nasty like this, when they actually let it out, in my experience it means they aren't feeling secure where they are, that they've been stung hard.  and that thought gives me some hope - the real type.

joe-impeach and stephen price blair:

I actually hate the "taking credit" for lower gas prices, etc.  Hannity always would include that in his list of f ups of obama.

Look, it ain't the price of gas that's the issue when obama took office until now.  It's HIS POLICIES and what the guy is going to do.

Remember the second debate, some guy in the crowd asked about Chu, the energy secretary nobody has heard of.

This fucking guy said that HIS DESIRED OUTCOME WAS FOR Americans to be paying what Europe pays for gasoline.  Basically, obama's boy wanted to DOUBLE everyone's gas bill.

They WANTED THIS.  So don't focus on the price of gas, which truly the Prez has negligible effects about 99% of the time, and focus on what Prezzy's boys WANT the price of gas to be.

When Romney let this total softball set up go by, I knew there was a decent chance we were boned...

143 "Unless you're going out into the bush to live off the land, you ain't getting away from the shit." When the inevitable Let It Burn discussions come up, someone will invariably talk about how they live in rural America with a patch of farmland and they're By The Grace Of God And John Moses Browning Nicely Self-Sufficient Out Here In The Sticks. Why, things will get bad in the cities eventually, but not for them. I have to keep pointing out that damn near every hard-left regime in history has opted to starve the sticks to keep their urban prole power base comfortable. The old lyric comes to mind. "I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four-wheel drive, and a country boy can survive." He had better have a horse and some good boots too, because while ammo for shotguns and rifles can still be stockpiled in quantities sufficient to last a few years of dearth, once the gasoline deliveries out in the boonies stop -- and they will be stopped by force majeure -- that four-wheel-drive is going to be merely a stationary encumbrance. Likewise diesel tractors once their fuel is gone. We on the right have come to jokingly speak of ourselves as the "serf" class. Never forget that when the left look at we serfs, they think of us rather as KULAKS. And a few hours of reading history will show you how the left traditionally treat kulaks. Holodomor.

152 Holodomor???

Posted by: Hodor at December 30, 2014 09:04 AM (CSXsy)

153 I consider most everything in the news lies of some sort or other.

They may have the basic facts correct (though there's no guarantee of that) but they'll speculate or insert storys or references to other incidents that have nothing to do with the current subject.

Politicians lie so often that sometimes we forget to believe them when they do tell the truth. Or believe they have some underlying reason for appearing to tell the truth. Such as when Boehner said he would get Amnesty through after the election.

Which is why some of the discussions here sometimes surprise me as to the vehemence some show at defending or attacking some position based on a story in the news.

It's all lies people and it's always all lies.

Just because it's a story you want to believe in or are afraid is true doesn't mean it is.

Which is why I've gotten a bit meh over some of the stuff being said/done as I don't put much weight behind much of what's said being close to the reality but more like tests and trials to see what will work or won't with certain situations.

Obama saw the Ebola Czar wasn't going to work so he just disappeared and fortunately no more incidents WERE REPORTED. (and there's speculation about that too) So no more need for a spin doctor.

Same stuff about all of what the Congress is going to do and what Obama's going to try to make rules on.

I believe it will be bad but how bad, we'll have to wait and see.

Meanwhile Ezra Klein still has a job. In what universe of fairness does that happen?

171 He rounds up the various lies perpetrated on us by the Clerisy. There were more of them than you know. The Clerisy? Interesting. Let me go on a bit of a rant here. I've learned a lot about the French Revolution lately and, whether they know it or not, the French Revolution is the key event for the Left. In fact, much of our language of politics comes from there: Left- and Right-wing, 4th estate, etc. It's explicit in Marx, of course, but implicit in whatever project the Left has in mind: You must have complete social collapse in order to have the perfect world. It is quite literally the Underpants Gnomes model: (1) Create social upheaval. (2) ??? (3) Profit! (Or, no need for profit!) Look at the current Brown/Garner/Martin protests. What do they protesters want? They cannot tell you. Literally, they can't tell you what they want. About the only concrete goal that makes sense (and would be fully embraced by the right) to end the protection of bad police is to end public employee unions. And they'd never go for that. But they're still protesting for...nothing. Some will say "awareness" or "to change the system" or somesuch, but in reality they have no plan. For most of the protesters, of course, it's a social event. A sock hop, but with more moral smugness and much sluttier girls. For the leaders, though, it's to fulfill this Underpants Gnomes dream. And, yet, all of these upheavals of Western (and Eastern) civilization end up horribly. You get, at best, a despotic oligarchy defined by a sociopathological pseudo-religion. Here's the other thing: The French Revolution was precipitated by massive debt.

175 The vapors is another way saying menstruation aka 'on the rag'.

And incidentally, the phrase on the rag appears to have originated in late 1800s New Orleans brothels; and ragtime music, which appeared about the same time and in the same place, is named after the phrase.

Working gals 'off the clock' would go down and act as hosts for dancing and such when they couldn't do their primary job.

Or so I've read.

I recently read the (fascinating) history of how the hieroglyphics and Minoan Linear B were finally decrypted by studying the structure of the inscriptions, the frequency of the various symbols, making a few guesses at place names that determined the phonic equivalents of the symbols, and unraveling the whole thing from there.

Very good post.  The French Revolution unfortunately embraced the ideals of the Left philosophically, whilst the American Revolution embraced the ideals of conservative, Old Testament principles and the sanctity of property and a revolution against monarchical ideals.

In other words, the French revolution simply transferred the power of the monarchy to the "state" so to speak, whereas the American revolution broke for all time the powers of any authority to so wholly OWN its people.

I've heard this many times.

Any idea how much we've spent on European Defense?

I have no clue and I don't think it's reasonable to claim that our entire defense budget went to protect Europe. (but a large amount did, I agree)

Be interesting to see some kind of breakdown and then apportioned to each country to see how much affect their reduced military's saved them over the years.

I think it's more on the lines of what they would've THOUGHT they had to spend, not what we spent. That would probably be a larger number.

Plus let's face it, we could and would not have abided a major assault by Russian on any part of Europe. It just would not be allowed as it would've cost us too much influence and money. Let alone the American units that would've died.

Its interesting to read up or talk with people in other nations about what their doctrines were back in the Cold War. Gives you a nice picture of how deadly it could have been.

I talked with a Swedish Ranger once, for example. Said his nation had no illusions of surviving intact, so they were under orders to just immediately  disperse into the countryside, recover all the countless military caches stored practically everywhere, and start up a Resistance movement.

And, yes, he said they're still laying around the countryside.

As the woman ran to a neighbor's apartment, Suarez busted through her sliding glass door, fled outside again by diving out her second-floor bedroom window and then broke into another nearby apartment, where he assaulted two people, said Lt. William McVey of Bensalem Police. One resident grabbed his legally registered gun and shot Suarez in the chest and abdomen. Even then, Suarez didn't stop struggling until police subdued him, McVey said. The AOSHQ lifestyle; not for the squeamish.

345 You ain't just whistling dixie, sister. When my youngest was still in high school last year, the level of outrage about the meals was becoming epic. From the kids.

Window of opportunity for the future. KISS principle (keep it simple shitforbrains) and meme for kiddies-  "It's the libs and democrats force feeding you that crap at lunch.  They also say you can't [insert gubmint control thingy]. They're also the teachers that lie to you about everything having to do with gubmint and what America is really about."

346  I believe Levin's beliefs are sincere. I think his outrage is fake because if it was real, he'd have died on the air a long time ago...

347 "I should probably put Bob Beckel in my pool. I'm totally convinced he's going to have a grabber on air any day now" I would have that audio and the resulting faceplate made into a ringtone within 15 minutes.

348 Rickl, Levin does grasp how bad things are here & with the French Republicans, as he calls the gutless wonders.

351 se non è vero, è ben trovato se non e vero, e ben travato Even if it is untrue, it is well conceived But this is both untrue and ill-conceived. Lies from the beginning, lies in the middle, lies at the end, lies through and through. In fact, very poorly conceived. And of course liberals eat it all up and spit it all out over and over in all different ways and all over the place. Stinking things up wherever they show up, and they show up absolutely everywhere. And they NEVER do stop. They cannot stop. They'd cease to exist if they stopped. And that is why there will ALWAYS be a Democrat party, as catch basin for just this type.

353 197 "Here's the other thing: The French Revolution was precipitated by massive debt." The other other thing is the enormous amount of killing that was done once the revolutionaries had the levers of state power in their hands. Again the template for so many leftist regimes since then.-------- I always had a theory that the French Revolution was so fresh in the minds of our government that it was a major reason that SS was set up as well as the CCC. The American people were furious about their living conditions, had actually set up tents at the White House, and our government was afraid.

354 I always had a theory that the French Revolution was so fresh in the minds of our government that it was a major reason that SS was set up as well as the CCC. The French Revolution was over in 1799 when Napoleon led his coup. The original Social Security Act passed in 1935. Not so fresh one would think. Are you thinking of the Russian Revolution perhaps?
