"Our dangerous reliance on carbon-based fuels is at the core of all these problems economic, environmental, national security," Gore said. "The answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels."...
Despite winning the popular vote against George Bush in the 2000 presidential election [I'm sorry-- how is that relevant?], Gore has displayed no interest in returning to politics.
...
He shied away from specifics during the speech, not mentioning the trillion-dollar price tag of ending carbon-based electricity. Instead, Gore urged the US to institute a carbon tax that could be offset by reducing the payroll tax on employers.
"We should tax what we burn, not what we earn," he said.
Underpinning Gore's remarks, however, was a finely tuned sense of the economic anxiety that dominates American life 13 weeks before the next presidential election. He observed that the environmental, fiscal, and national-security dangers facing the country would be eliminated by a conversion to clean energy.
Finely-tuned sense. Right. He's proposing to make energy cost even more when its price is currently skyrocketing and edging the world towards a global recession.
Well, that's al-Guardian for you.

OK, let's think this thing through.
Wind doesn't blow all the time.
Sun doesn't shine all the time.
It may not be blowing or sunny at the same time.
There is no method in the system to store energy.
If it's deadly calm at night, and it's 85 degrees out, and everyone wants to surf the net and watch TV, where is the power going to come from to run the AC, and the computer and the TV?
Any Solar and Wind system would have to have a backup system to provide energy when the sun ain't shining and the wind ain't blowing. And this system would have to be able to cover nearly 100% of possible demand. And, this system would have to be up and running all the time, because you just can't flip a switch and have a reactor or a coal fired power plant come alive.
Now, I'm all for using spinning wind turbines and solar panels, but they aren't going to replace current power generation, no matter what the Goracle has to say.

Shit this clean energy sure do seem like a miracle cure to all that ails. I'm sure it could do wonders on the difficult stains in my shower. Probably add an inch to my dick and give me back the, uh - enthusiasm, I had when I was 18. I got to get me some of this here clean energy.

When exactly did we stop using stones? It's call the Stone Age because that's all that was used. Did Bronze go away with the Bronze Age?
I doubt it judging by the huge pair of bronze balls this ass has if he thinks this is going to fly. He doesn't though. He knows the jig is up.
That pictures they used shows him with the same face he had after conceding to GWB. Defeat, get used to it Al.

What a dumbfuck! The stone age gave way to better technology that was in FUCKING EXISTENCE!!!
Man didn't quit using stone tools to sit there with our collective thumbs in our asses because some asshat promised us something better was just over the horizon.
Sorry to go all spurwing there for a sec.

What is Al Gore's real point in being the front man for Global Warming and Carbon Offsets?
It's true that solar hot water, solar heating and cooling and solar electricity can greatly reduce the energy bills of an average American home, but it only works if that particular American home has the space to install about 10 square meters of solar cells and collectors (very preferably each with trackers), plus several large lead acid batteries.
If you live in a rural area, or suburban area with large tracts and no trees to get in the way, and have a spare $20,000, then such a system probably makes sense; it might pay for itself in 3-5 years (but it also might take 10 or more).
But if you live, like most people, in an urban area, the payback will likely be very much longer, if at all. For urban areas, the "solar" solution starts looking like a farm or solar cels, reflectors/concentrators, etc. This is a power company issue.
So, what's Al Gore's point
In the larger senes, what is Al Gore's motivation?
His ideas are dubiously workable for most Americans (even excluding the global warming question), and he himself seems to be exempt.
Is Al heavily invested in various solar energy companies? Where, exactly, will the carbon tax money be spent (or has he said)? Is he planning on making another run at the Presidency (2012/2016)? Does he simply require national/international attention?

The prospect of domination of the nations scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present and is gravely to be regarded.
"Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite. (emphasis added)"Dwight D. Eisenhower, farewell speech -- the part no one ever remembers or quotes!

The space race was largely the result of the US and the Soviets fighting the Cold War. The US had to challenge the Soviets on every front, physical or ideological. We had to get our act together then because we couldn't afford the expansion of international socialism in any arena.
Now Herr Koctor Gore appropriates that great effort for his expansion of international governance and regulation.
If ever a Court of Rhetoric and Reason comes into being, may Gore be the first tried and convicted of the Misuse of a Metaphor.

And with the current grid situation in California and the NIMBY situation blocking any new electric supply; I suspect I'll have a good chance of dying of old age long before any changeover occurs.
I don't care what Schwarzenegger says, he doesn't have a rat's ass chance of getting electric cars to be more than a novelty in CA with the current situation. If he somehow magically did switch everyone to electric cars the grid would have a lifespan you could only measure with a stopwatch, and the coming blackouts would be near permanent from lack of supply.
Of course, to be fair, they wouldn't be allowed to import electricity from coal-plants in Nevada and Arizona and would need to produce their own electricity for this benchmark to be properly met.

In contrast, the deepest any Western oil company has drilled is around 4.5 km.
If my conversions are right, and they are, 4.5 km is approximately 2.7 miles which is approximately 14,000 feet. There are better than 500 wells within a radius of 25 miles of Fort Stockton, TX that are all over 20,000 feet. I wonder how much of the rest of this article is bullshit.

Em... you're kidding about not knowing his motivation, right?
I think where he's planning to make his main dough is as a benevolent broker of carbon credits- if memory serves, he sits on the board of at least one if not more than company specializing in same, and the corporate headquarters are in someplace like Tahiti or Pitcairn Island or somesuch.
Then there's the whole bit where he gets scads of eejit greenie dollars for showing up and belching out his anti-science screed at various hug-ins around the world.
So yeah, the little wooden boy who would be president has gone on to full time horseshit slinging and is making quite a living.

One set of reports says that he pushed for clean coal in addition to a whole bunch of the usual crunchy stuff - solar, wind, and geothermal.
The NYT makes no mention of clean coal.
There's a pretty interesting and serious disconnect depending on which is to be believed.
If Gore mentioned clean coal, then he sort of realizes that we can't completely wean off fossil fuels, and has made a break towards a more rational energy policy. It would also mean that the NYT is misstating what Gore said.
If Gore didn't mention clean coal, then he's consistent - consistently wrong, but all the other media outlets that included the clean coal bit have to explain how that got in there, and why.

100 years from now, when foreign oil dependance is a distant memory and we run everything off of water, Al Gore will be remembered in the books as an eccentric whose ideas were well-meaning but tragically inept. His face will be a monotone portrait on t-shirts and posters everywhere, much like Che Guevera, the champion of a cause that many believed would work but in the end just fucked everything up. Which is good because then our descendants will know who all the assholes are.
