I have never, personally. However, that question strikes me as another version of the Pauline Kael Gambit, referring to the New Yorker film critic who famously said, after the landslide victory of Nixon in 1972, essentially, "How could Nixon have won? I don't know anybody who voted for Nixon!"

In other words, while sampling and internals are both important factors to consider when evaluating the results of any poll, Statistics is indeed a viable method by which certain information can be gleaned and inferred. Just 'cuz any one of us personally hasn't participated in polling doesn't mean polling isn't worthwhile.

There's a major flaw in all of these "national poll" numbers, whether it's for congressional preference or whatever.

We do not elect Congressmen nationally - we elect them on a state by state basis.  If California and NY (huge population centers) report 80% in favor of the democrat position and the other 48 states show a 52 - 48 republican advantage, the national polls are going to show a mathematical advantage to the democrats even though 48 of the 50 states are against it. 

That's stating the position at its most extreme, but you get the point. Only state by state polls would have any meaning, but those are a) too expensive and b) wouldn't give the "correct" results, so they are not done.

To listen to all their chatter, you would think you would have to step over the dying each morning on the way to work. I think this poll reflects that. most people think that we should take care of the uninsured and the Dems are selling the public option as the only solution to that problem.

This bill started out as a solution to the recession, then a solution to high costs, then a solution to the uninsured, and now it has settled as a solution to the hoards of dying sick that (a) are under 65 and ineligible for medicaid, (b) work and make enough money that they do not qualify for medicaid, (c) have not suffered a catastrophic problem which is covered by most state plans (d) do not have a chronic illness covered by medicaid, (e) are not illegal (wink wink) and (f) are not wealthy. These are the people (person?) dying in the streets and we must look to Stalin and Mao to solve this problem! The Progressives will pay any price to save that poor sick and dying soul.

Let me guess, the sample was composed of 51% Democrats.  The median IQ of the sampled population was also 51.  Given 7 more years of this, 51% will also be the total tax rate.

Coincidentally, the purchasing power of an average week's wage will be $51, based on the value of the dollar in 1951.

If done properly, these polls can be truly random, with the folks at the phone never knowing who they are calling until they dial, and me the operator dumping phone numbers into a pool that are truly random minus those who had requested in the past to be removed.

But one thing that must be remembered when looking at any poll - who paid for it? When I did this along my road to now teaching how to design a quantitative political analysis, I was taught 2 basic things by the professor (who was one of 2 actual right wingers I had in college) - if you have a bad sample (which will happen at times if it's truly random and not stratified in any way) say so. Or, if the person paying for it wants it to look a certain way, make it do so in order to get paid again later.

I've ran random polls. I've stratified polls to get 'x'% of a certain type of  respondents. I've played with polls to find certain results to please those who paid for it. Always ask yourself who paid when looking at any poll.

Couple of times. One time was clearly a candidate push poll. (For the unaware, push poll is where Candidate A does a poll. You indicate you support Candidate B. The pollster then ask, would you be willing to support Candidate B if you knew he cheated on this taxes/wife/dog).

I did alot of push polling in the early 90s. So it was a blast. I reworked their push poll for the pollster while doing the poll to make it still effective but less obvious they were push polling. Wound up in a discussion about why the poll was shit - it was too obvious a push and that anyone with half a brain would figure it out. After it was done, she asked the obligatory do you support Candidate A or B - clearly with the hope of chaning my mind. Told her no, wasted your time. But have a nice night.
