— Dave in Texas The family of Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin was informed today by the United States Army that the remains of their son have been recovered and identified through DNA testing.

BATAVIA, Ohio (AP) - The father of Matt Maupin, a soldier listed as missing-captured in Iraq since 2004 said today that the military had informed him that his son's remains were found in Iraq. Keith Maupin said at a news conference in suburban Cincinnati that an Army general told him DNA testing had identified the remains of his son, Sgt. Keith Matthew Maupin, or "Matt" as he was commonly known.
Sgt. Maupin was captured almost four years ago in an ambush west of Baghdad. He was a graduate of Glen Este High School, near Cincinnati, and was a student at the University of Cincinnati when he joined the Army Reserves.
Words fail. They just do. I wish I could find some, something. Instead I just grieve with his family, and pray for their healing from such a difficult ordeal, and their painful loss.
Requiescat in pacem Sgt. Maupin.
Thanks for the tip Kevlarchick

Rest in peace soldier.
Job well done.
Thank you for sacrificing so much so that my family can live in peace and freedom here at home.
You won't be forgotten.
May God comfort the hearts of your family, your friends, and those who knew and loved you much more than the rest of us.

When I saw this post the sidebar on how "Stop Loss" has flopped caught my eye.
The day that SSG Maupin was captured, PFC Jeremy Church distinguished himself by fighting through the ambush and rescuing many of those trapped in the kill zone. Details can be found at http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0KAB/is_1_51/ai_n15379258
I guess where I'm going with this is that Hollywood doesn't seem inclined to make a movie about Maupin's murder (or the murders of other GIs who have fallen into enemy hands) or the heroics of men like PFC Church. I wonder if any such film will ever be made.
When United 93 came out close friends told me that it was too soon to relive the experience. Last year the dominant sentiment seemed to be that it was time to move on. Did I miss the 15 minutes when it was acceptable to remember 9/11?
War is difficult and dangerous-the President should have emphasized this at every opportunity. Now that we seem to almost have victory in hand few seem inclined to bear any further sacrifice or place the sacrifice that has already occurred in honorable context. The Oprah ethic that dominates our society can't elevate these soldiers to any higher status than victim. It drives me to distraction.

How does this country manage to produce such men and women? I had been feeling sorry for myself all day, for shit that I now realize with shame is utterly inconsequential. Thank you, sir. I will try to do better, sir.

CavMedic, I'm sorry, I just now saw your comment in NiceDeb's thread.
I got the email from KC and started writing about it. Thanks for the head's up on that there.

Sherlock,
"Where do we find such men?" is hardly a new question. Think Bridges of Toko-Ri. I'm sure it was asked long before that.
When I was a recruiter for the Army, I was often frustrated by many of the young men and women I attempted to recruit. More often, I was impressed as hell. The kids are allright.

ATTENTION!
Listen up--roll Call
Maupin! (x3)
SGT Maupin?
SGT Kieth Maupin!
One of you above should be able to offer the proper response to this painful call--one of ours is now (finally) accounted for and present.
Only had to do it once. Sucked. couldn't bring em all back, can't be every where at once. Once you train, you gotta delegate, and trust your best was good enough.
Random chance on the battlefield is a fickle bitch and a faithless mistress.
Imagine this will occur for real (if not already) at his unit now, where it will be properly executed.
HOOAH, soldier. Lie at Rest, son.

His family can walk with their heads held high, but I'm sure they don't feel like it. It must be so painful to know that the promise of defending your nation with your life has just fallen on your loved one's shoulders.
It's our job, every American's, to protect that sacrifice.

All,
He has come home; at the very least his family has this. It is very, very little, but more than so many suffered in the past.
Call to the Colors; sound Retreat and listen to the strains of the bugle.
His duty is done and he is home; let all men know the cost he has paid for them to breathe free and live as men should.

The consolation, besides the fact that this Soldiers remains are finally home, is that a lot of the terrorist muslim animals who are responsible for this type of atrocity, are in hell without their 72 virgins.
Rest easy, SGT Maupin.

Cavmedic,
You are so right about the "too early" crap. Don't despair about the society as a whole though, the media controls the news feeds carefully exaclty because they don't want to "inflame" the people.
Thanks for the story of Pfc Church.

I was that which others did not want to be
I went where others feared to go
And did what others failed to do
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing and reluctantly
Accepted the thought of eternal loneliness.......should I fail
I have seen the face of terror;felt the stinging cold of fear;
And enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love
I have cried , pained, and hoped
I have lived times others would say were best foegotten
At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud
Of what I was........a soldier

Sgt. Matt Maupin, RIP
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
The rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Condolences to the Maupin Family
