The trick actually has nothing to do with the cards. Pay attention. I didn't, and now I feel stupider than usual.

1 You really didn't notice the other changes ? You really need to get out more. On another note, aren't "magic" and illusionist tricks all about redirecting your attention ? Much like, exactly like, what happened here. Come on, you at least had to notice the table cloth or the back drop.

I can't get over the amount of dupes who are fascinated by "magic tricks" they see on television or video. No offense to the dupes here, of course.

I always suspected that there was another notch to my stupidity - an "eleven" so-to-speak. For once(!) I was right. I have no idea what this means, but the feeling is familiar.

13 Gotta say I missed it.

I was so proud of myself sneering about the blatent switch of decks, "Hey! He swapped out the original deck of cards!", that I completely missed the swap out of all the other stuff.

Call it a card trick and people watch the cards. And brag that they saw the 'trick'.

As was stated above: Even with the warning, I missed it.

14 Was it really necessary to have the gorilla there? Did they treat him humanely? It would have been better if they had said "No gorillas were harmed in the filming of this stupid trick". Then we would be left to wonder why they would say that.

15 The gorilla reminds me of the scene in Body Heat where William Hurt watches a car drive by being driven by a clown, who is waving at him. I'm sure the director was trying to say something with this scene, but it was either so clumsy or so subtle
that it ended up just being stupid.

18 Anybody go to the Quirkology site? The other two vids in that category are pretty stupid. One's a switchout, and the other is just math. The one where you have to guess in which interview the subject is lying is interesting, though. I say Interview A.

22 Not stupid, Ace. This is known as "change blindness", and it's something that's hardwired into our visual perception. It's really hard to learn your way around it.

There are certain types of visual changes that you notice even when your attention is focused on something else, and others that you don't notice even when you are expecting them. Movement is a good example of the former, and this is a good example of the latter.

Now, if you really want to feel stupid, the gorilla-basketball video is the way to go. But that one doesn't work if you know about it. (And only works on about 50% of subjects anyway.)

24 Eh. I guessed about the off-camera card swap - close ups in magic tricks videos are a complete mulligan for performers - but tuned out the other bits; I don't think that was so much an animal response as just being numbed out by constant (over-) cinematography in TV and movies (you get used to making even more allowances for home movie quality stuff like this).

Still pretty cool though.

As soon as the camera panned away from the cards, I wondered "well duh he's switching the deck" the whole point of the "trick" is to switch the deck in front of onlookers without them noticing.

Of course I missed all the other changes. I blame the movement of the camera, since it really isn't important what the background looks like, or the shirt colour, and I'm busy looking at the cards.
