My old man was in the nam, he has a lot of the funny from war. Many of the vets I interact with were in war, they found the funny from war. My best friend was in a war, he found the funny in war. A guy I was in with was a part of the O'grady rescue, and he thought the whole experience was hilarious. Surreal, but hilarious.
Humor is how we deal with horror, and it's even more humorous when it is the enemy facing the horror.
Watch the docu on Blackhawk down, "so now that our egress is set up, whats the plan? Lets run out of here, Oh! Hey great idea, why didn't I think of that 17 hours ago."
You have to survive, and live with the memories, and humor is the best way to do so.
Posted by: Wickedpinto at November 18, 2008 06:04 PM (ul7te)
Good point, but the humor you are talking about is experienced during the act, not after the fact. I have never been in war, but my grandpa (who is still alive) served in WW II and my uncle in 'Nam, they never made funnies about any of their experiences. I just do not understand how killing people or destroying things would ever be funny.

Not at all, it's also after the fact. You should hear the O'Grady guy tell the story, it takes forever cuz he's laughing at the situation. There is always humor, it might be a little more rational, rather than the "get through it right now" thing, but it's always there.

Because they're Taliban fighters on motorcycles whose entire goal in life is to kill the infidels so they can get their 72 virgins. Now they're dead and they didn't even know it was coming. I have no pity for them as human beings and find their death exciting. Sorry, but it's true.
Watch the videos on Liveleak where the soldiers are calling in an airstrike on the home of insurgents and scream and whoot afterwards. Those bastards were trying to kill them. Tough shit.

This is pretty funny:
Dutch troops in Afghanistan calling in an American air strike on the Taliban, speaking in Dutch but cursing in English, and then confirming the success of the strike in English.
I guess they don't have any good swear words in Dutch.

It isn't that we make more of them. It's that the silent ones who have been expecting us to give up without a fight. Now that we have shown a spine, the enemy has no choice but to show themselves, or look as though they have been defeated.
No enemy has ever been defeated through weakness.

That's not an A-10. The initial flight scene might have been,
No WAY!, you can see the tracing dot on one of those cuts, and see that the entire camera moves, and the plane has to adjust it's flight. The gun is so powerful, that if you empty the magazine, you will put the plane into a stall. That is one of the things that makes the A-10 so pimp. The continued steady cam is for photographic purposes, not targeting.

Foreal though, I think War is the last possible choice.
Naive, and truly wrong.
TOTAL war, should be a last choice, thats why we spend so much on 200 and 500 lb bombs who's guidance systems are almost as expensive as the entire defense budget for guyana. We even commonly use kinnetics, to contain damage, we are using slow movers to take out targets, at a cost much greater than the risk of life, so that we can contain damage.
Limited war, fought for the purposes of victory, is a KINDNESS!!!
If we thought war was an easy decision, we wouldn't give one fuck, and reach for the best bang for the buck. We could easily blanket half of iraq with Battleship fire, and a bunch of logistical boats, rather than the expensive air operations we are doing.
By killing only the people we KNOW deserve killing, we are being KIND!
Cuz they don't give one fuck.

The standard Turkish plotline plays out like this:
1) Islamofascists gain power.
2) Turkish army comes out of barracks, shoots Islamofascists, restores secular rule.
It's happened several times, I believe.
The only thing that's saved Turkey so far is that until recently the Army had a fanatic loyalty to the legacy of Kemal Ataturk.

"I just do not understand how killing people or destroying things would ever be funny."
That's because you've lived your entire life in a society that protected you so well you never had to even consider the possibility of needing to kill someone else in order to survive. The vast majority of people throughout history have not had that luxury, "dying by the sword" was a constant threat, and having the ability to respond in kind was important to basic survival.
It's so easy for people like you to be certain of your moral superiority because you couldn't casually kill another human being, but the simple fact is you would not even be here if not for others who have been willing to take such action. The reality is that you are in fact inferior to them, both morally and in terms of simple capability. At the most basic level you are a coward, totally dependent upon others for your very survival.
And for the record I did two tours in Iraq, and prior to that I did tours in Bosnia and Kosovo, as well as about 15 years in law enforcement stateside, so I have had some experience with violence and conflict.
There's been lots of times I found parts of it funny.

From what he's told me, the current viciousness of the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts are not much different than The Forgotten War in SE Asia. The motivations are the only differentiating factor.
I almost think it's easier to understand the current conflicts, what with the GWOT being a religious war with the Koran "passed down by Allah" that can be read and understood. In Korea, in the shadow of WWII, the "enemy" were lawless, mostly godless tribal-cum-nationalists caught between feudalism-imposed starvation and poverty, and the glorious liberation of Socialist redemption. A nirvana as described by Marx and Mao, but unread by the illiterate masses.
It was a secular war back then, but the doctrine apparently was the same as it is now. 79 Virgins equated to 79 bags of rice.
One of his stories was of a female prisoner (they didn't call them detainees back then) who had gained 10 lbs while in custody in a U.S. prison camp (They weren't called detainee centers back then either). As she was being escorted out of an armored vehicle to be released during a prisoner exchange, she spit at the guard.
(Now she wasn't the first to spit at a MP, but at least she didn't strip off all her U.S. issued clothes to walk across the border naked, as had become customary with the North Korean men upon release at the time.)
But in this instance the MP was having a bad day and was tired of being handcuffed by the UN regulations of humane treatment, reacted by slamming the armored door back into the prisoners face, breaking both her nose and her toes.
He then kindly helped her thru the DMZ.
No YouTube back then though. Just untold stories from some forgotten Vets.
There is humor in tragedy, and tragedy in humor. War is hell.
Bikers vs an A10? Bring it on.

Johno1, I was about to be pissed at you at the start of your comment.
My father never talked about his service, nor did every single one of his brothers, or my great uncle (grampa was crazy when I was only 3) Nor did almost everyone of his friends.
You simply knew that they served, but there were no war stories until us pinto boy's were about to join. I remember pops talking to bro privately about his time, shunning me cuz i was too young.
You can only share the bad shit (I never went through any bad shit/war, my bad shit was politics) when someone might have to face it on their own.
My family is rather martial, but they don't push it at all, in fact ma's and pops were kinda pissed at bro and I joining. Well, ma's was pissed at us joining, pops was pissed that we weren't officers.
So I can understand that, and the difference between Korea and Iraq are monumental, like, the most basic metric. Casualties.
We have been humiliating bad guys in war since '76, and it's not all tech, and better medical care in the field, we are just that much better, a FACT.
Only thing this war has in common with korea and "The Nam" (I like tossing that term out there, cuz my mom uses it like it's the most natural thing in the world, meaning that spouses and children had it tough too) is that we won't take the war to where the war is born.
NORTH Korea equaled China, when china was weak.
"The Nam" = North VietNam as a BLATANT logistic base, supplied by the korean's the chinese and the russkies.
and now? Iran.
Shit is gonna hit a boiling point, and 2 million Americans, (we should actually expand to about 3.5 million) will slaughter 10's of millions of arabs and communists, who just don't fucking get it, while our police forces at home, will get part of what they have wanted for a long time, a change in the ROE for domestic military, until the foreign efforts are finished.
We are living in interesting times, but I guess, that shit is just gonna be interesting in my lifetime, it's the next gen that is gonna be living in an action movie.

This was even before all the new electronic and weapons upgrades. It's not just for tanks anymore. Anything that needs killing or destroying is pretty much done for when an A-10 flies over (and a squadron of A-10s flying overhead is a beautiful sight if you happen to be on the right side). Forget about taking names, DNA analysis is needed after a strike.
The A-10 should be renamed "Teh Awesome Warthog". Cold steel death from the skies with new, improved pink mist action.
I notice a lot of Darwin candidates posting here. Suck it up, hippies.

Thanks for the hat tip, DIT, but you totally neglected to feature the Jawa headline that still has me in my bunk:
"A-10 Chases Down Taliban on Motorcycles!"
I love thinking about these goatlovers talking about how "God is on their side"... when they have motorcycles and we have A-10s. Mofos best be prayin a little harder...

How do they know those are Taliban, and not some kids out having an afternoon ride? This is a real question... I hate the Taliban fuckers, I just need some reassurance that we're killing the bad guys. Does anybody know?

And ... you can't argue that sending these guys to meet their 72 virgins isn't a good deed on our part. I love it when all sides get a win!

- REAL Christians don't refer to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as "the good Lord JC"
- a REAL Christian would be saddened that people like those in the video chose for themselves a path of violence and death and lead, ultimately, to their own deat.
- a REAL Christian would also feel, if not joy, then at least 'satisfaction' that there is still justice in this world and that there are a couple less violent, evil people in this world

^^ They're confirmed combatants in a number of ways - and it depends on the circumstances. These could be daily runs on bikes by known terrorists - and then someone makes a decision to take them out. They could be terrorists fleeing the scene of an attack. They could have been observed carrying weapons on the bike - or there could have been multiple sources of confirmation (and probably were).
Relax ... enjoy the video and have a laugh - you can rest assured these are bad guys ... 100%.

My point was simply to respond to the CCC Trolls, not to make a litmus test of who is or isn't a "real" Christian.
Posted by: Religious Zealot at November 19, 2008 05:25 AM (lnhC8)
^^I identify myself as a Christian ... although I'm not a very good one. I support the ideals of Christianity and consider all Christians to be my natural political allies.
But I'm sorry - I enjoy watching these guys ride to their deaths in retarded fashion - because every one them wants to kill my kids and yours - and neither my kids or yours has ever done one thing to them (and neither have you or I). And if it weren't for these A-10's ... these guys might be in downtown New York with a dirty bomb at this very moment. So yeah - I think this is public service and hilariously funny - cleansing the human gene pool of intolerance and stupidity. All of these guys had a choice - and they chose HATE. They can deal with the consequences and if others find joy in their getting their just desserts - I see no problem with that.
Again - I'm not a very good Christian - just a real aggressive one.

War stories weren't talked about in our house when I was a kid. My dad was a WW2 vet, I never knew him 'til I was near 6 years old. He and my uncle would talk occasionally, always excluding me. It wasn't until I returned from my vacation time in sunny southeast asia that he opened up.
What he told me made my shit seem like a Sunday school picnic.

As I said after that, that post came off as WAY more preachy than I meant.
I was really only trying to react to the CCC (Concerned Conservative Christian) Trolls.
That said, one must read that last TWO points of my post together.
I'm not saying that it is necessarily wrong (or un-Christian) to celebrate the death of violent, evil people.
But I am suggesting that, for Christians at least, that there should be a little sadness - not for the death of these people, but for the wasted life.
What I mean there is that these people had choices and opportunities to do the RIGHT thing and it's sad that they chose to waste their lives by choosing the wrong thing.

^^Completely understand and I agree. Like I said, were I a really GOOD Christian - I would also be saddened by these deaths. But as I confessed - I'm not a very good Christian (though I would like to be). Until something comes along that changes me - I hate these schmucks. I hate what they have done to this country and to the world. They have no right to kill us based on religious ideology. They have no right to put fear into the free world based on religious ideology. They have changed our world for the worse.
Quite frankly - I have a seething hatred for these guys. A very UN-Christian, seething hatred that leads me to take joy in seeing their blood spilled unceremoniously across the mountains of Afghanistan - or the deserts of Iraq. The only thing I'm sad is about is the fact that I'm no longer out there pulling the trigger to snuff these guys.
I'm not a pedophile, I'm not into weird porno or drugs. I've never been an alcoholic and I don't lie, cheat nor steal. My word is my bond. But I am way overboard on eliminating these cretins from the earth. Yes ... I hate them.

I'd say that the only USAF pilots that are universally loved by the US Army are the 'Hog drivers. At least it was that way in my old unit.
We used to do combined live fire exercises with the AF on the Eielson AFB ranges back in the day. During my first one, I went to the top of a mountain with a work crew to emplace targets. Rifle range silhouettes, scrapped jeeps and Chevy Blazers etc.The top of the mountain was a huge bubble of solid granite, with a few pines sticking out of crevices. The next day, we did an assault exercise up the same mountain. The 'Hogs strafed the shit out of the mountain top (along with our own artillery, mortars etc.). When we got to the top, the solid granite was fucking gone. For a good 300-400 yards around, nothing but dirt.
And for the same 300-400 yards, there were little 18 inch craters densely packed and overlapping, with nothing untouched. Sobering, to say the least.

There is definitely some 'tension' in Christian beliefs between loving one's enemy and hating evil.
We definitely want to be careful of who, what, and how much we hate since hate has a tendency to turn in on itself and destroy the one doing the hating.
That said, we are certainly not to be extra somber over the removal of evil men from this life.
Our God is a merciful and JUST God - and this kind of stuff (the video) just reinforces that.

Every time I find myself having the slightest shred of sympathy for these murderous scum, I just flash back to those people who jumped from the WTC rather than burn to death.
Then I'm sorry. Sorry it was so quick and easy. Let's ban cluster bombs and bring back napalm.
Posted by: MarkD at November 19, 2008 06:21 AM (MMy4A)
BTW, it sure looks like cluster bombs, not .50 cals, too much incidiary.
1. A-10 does not use .50 cal, but 30mm. BIG difference: .50 cal = 1/2 inch dia., 30mm = 1+ inch dia. .50 cal puts a really big hole in you, 30mm puts you in the big blender, and hits "puree".
2. As has been mentioned, the A-10 / GAU-8 can use explosive ordnance, not just DU slugs, althoug it is my understanding the even a DU slug is pretty explosive when it hits something going as fast as these do.
3. As has also been mentioned, the way the pattern "walks" is a dead giveaway that it is a hi-rate-of-fire gun, not a cluster bomb.
ps. Can someone who knows tell me why some naval guns, big ones like 16 inchers, are (or were at one time) defined as being, say ".45 caliber", or ".50 caliber"?
Posted by: sherlock at November 19, 2008 09:11 AM (FsbnY)
Sherlock-
With naval rifles, the caliber refers to barrell length. IIRC bore x caliber = length, so the 5 inch 50 caliber guns on most of our current DD, CG, and DDGs are 5 inch diameter naval rifles, with a barrell length of 250 inches.
